Group hails FG’s decision to set up technical committee on multi-billion dollar integrated infrastructural project

    By Iyiola Olalere

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded the inauguration of a high-powered technical inter-ministerial committee to evaluate and fast-track an integrated gas, power, and high-speed rail project being promoted by De- Sadel Nigeria Limited as a good step in the right direction.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, the company argued that it may end up as one of the most visionary public-private sector projects in recent years.

It said: “The project which is the first of its kind in the country is one of the most visionary private sector–driven infrastructure initiatives in Nigeria and West Africa as it seeks to combine gas monetisation, power generation, high-speed rail, digital infrastructure, and real estate development under a 40-year Public-Private-Partnership and renewable concession arrangement.

“We believe that this project is not only ambitious but it also demonstrates the federal government’s commitment to supporting credible private sector-driven investments capable of unlocking value across key sectors of the country’s economy.

“Such projects will also help to close infrastructure gaps, enhance productivity in the economy and stimulate long-term economic growth and development.

“Similarly, the project is in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu in enabling energy sufficiency, modern transportation infrastructure and general economic growth in the country.”

The group added that it will open thousands of employment opportunities for young Nigerian graduates and artisans.

  • Wadagni, Ruling Coalition’s Candidate Wins Benin Presidential Election with 94% Vote

Wadagni, Ruling Coalition’s Candidate Wins Benin Presidential Election with 94% Vote

    Cotonou, (Benin)

The Benin National Autonomous Election Commission, CENA, has declared Kossi Mbueke Romuald, 49, the ruling Coalition’s candidate and Finance Minister for the past 10 years, winner of the 12 April 2026 presidential election with 94.05% of the vote.

According to the Commission, based on the processed returns from 90.55% of votes in Benin’s 12 Administrative Departments and the Diaspora, Wadagni polled 4,252,347 votes against the opposition candidate Paul Hounkpe’s 269,433 or 5.95% of the 4,522756 total valid votes cast from the 7,897,287 registered voters.

The Commission said these figures represented a 58.75% voter turnout.

Even before the declaration of the provisional results, which have to be certified by the Constitutional Court, Hounkpe had conceded defeat, based on his observation of the balloting trend.

Benin has a unique voter registration system, which automatically adds the name of every citizen aged 18 years and above to the voter’s roll, unlike in most other countries, where citizens register themselves to vote.

The National Agency for the Identification of Persons, ANIP, says it is addressing the challenge of removing the names of the dead from the voter’s roll, following questions raised by civil society and the opposition about citizen participation and voter turnout figures in elections.

The CENA puts the voter turnout in the 2016 presidential election at 68% and 36% for the 11 January 2026 parliamentary and municipal elections.

The Benin presidential election took place amid far-reaching constitutional reforms and a drastic reduction in the number of political parties, with the opposition alleging exclusion and the shrinking of the civic space.

The presidential election result followed a similar pattern with the January 11 elections, which saw the ruling Coalition winning all the 109 parliamentary seats.##

Retired Officers Urge Tinubu to Approve Police Exit from Pension Scheme.

    ‎By Adewale Owoade.

‎Retired officers of the Nigeria Police Force has staged a protest at the Oyo State Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, over what they described as poor pension payments under the Contributory Pension Scheme managed by the National Pension Commission (PENCOM).

‎The protesters, mainly retired senior officers, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to assent to a bill already passed by the National Assembly, which would enable the police to withdraw from the scheme and establish a separate pension structure.

‎They argued that the continued inclusion of police personnel in the contributory pension scheme was unjust, noting that other security agencies had been exempted.

‎Speaking during the protest, a retired Superintendent of Police, Joseph Alabi, lamented the hardship faced by former officers, describing their monthly pensions as “meagre.”

‎“For over two years now, we have been on this issue. Retired Nigerian police officers are suffering.

‎“All we are asking is for the President to assent to the bill so that we can exit PENCOM and have a system that caters for both retirees and serving officers.

‎“Air Force, Navy, military and other agencies have been removed from this scheme, but the police are still there. That is unfair,” he said.

‎Another protester, retired Deputy Superintendent of Police, Omotayo Saludeen, who served for 35 years, decried the inadequacy of retirement benefits.

‎“How can someone serve for 35 years and receive about N1.5 million or N2 million? We are not being paid well. We are suffering.

‎“We are hungry and dying. Nigerians should help us appeal to the government,” she said.

‎The Ibadan protest is part of a nationwide agitation, with similar demonstrations reported in Abuja and other parts of the country.

‎The retirees vowed to continue their protests until their demands are addressed.

  • NOA Zonal Director commends Kwara Head of Service, seeks stronger partnership

NOA Zonal Director commends Kwara Head of Service, seeks stronger partnership

    By Afusat Agunbiade-Oladipo

Dr Priscilla Gondoaluor, the Zonal Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Kwara has commended the appointment of the state’s Head of Service, describing her as competent and well-prepared for the role.

The Director said she was impressed by her track record after conducting background checks on her performance, noting that the agency prioritises research and fact-finding before engaging with institutions and leaders.

She also lauded the Kwara Government for prioritising merit over gender considerations in her appointment, adding that the decision reflects the administration’s commitment to fairness and due process.

The Zonal Director expressed optimism about her confirmation and pledged the agency’s support in strengthening governance through collaboration with the state civil service.

She emphasised the critical role of the civil service in governance, describing it as the engine room of government and a key driver of policy implementation.

According to him, the NOA recently expanded its structure to include zonal directorates across the six geopolitical zones, with the North Central headquarters located in Kwara, to enhance coordination and effectiveness.

She explained that the agency is not a political body but is mandated to mobilise, sensitise, and reorient citizens towards positive behavioural change for national development.

The Director noted that civil servants, drawn from diverse communities, play a vital role in influencing public attitudes and values, making them strategic partners in achieving the agency’s objectives.

She highlighted the National Values Charter developed by the agency, which outlines commitments for both government and citizens, including equality, democracy, peace and security, inclusivity, justice, and meritocracy.

According to her, the charter serves as a social contract aimed at strengthening accountability and fostering mutual responsibility between government and the people.

He said the visit was to familiarise with the Head of Service and strengthen collaboration to promote effective service delivery in the state.

In his remarks, the Kwara State Director of NOA, Mr Dare Abdulganiy, expressed appreciation for the existing relationship between the agency and the state government.

He commended Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his developmental strides, particularly in the areas of pension payments and education reforms.

Abdulganiy also lauded the Head of Service for her contributions to the civil service, describing her as dedicated and result-oriented.

He appealed for sustained collaboration between the agency and state ministries, departments, and agencies to enhance public engagement and programme implementation.

The Director urged the state government to continue to involve NOA in its activities, noting that such synergy would promote inclusive governance and better service delivery.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting government initiatives and fostering national values among citizens.

In her response, the Acting Head of Service in Kwara, Dr Olufunke Shittu, described the visit of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) as timely and significant, reaffirming the state government’s commitment to professionalism, integrity and improved service delivery.

Shittu, who received the NOA Zonal Director and her team said the Kwara Civil Service had undergone major reforms under Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, resulting in a merit-driven system.

She cited the administration’s competency-based leadership assessments, noting that promotions and appointments were now determined through transparent, electronically-driven processes.

“The system ensures that only the best candidates emerge, based strictly on merit,” she said.

The Head of Service also highlighted the state’s citizen engagement model in budget planning, explaining that the government regularly consults stakeholders across the three senatorial districts to identify priority needs.

“Before budgets are finalised, citizens are engaged to state their needs and assess previous performances.

“These inputs guide government planning and implementation,” she added.

Shittu emphasised that governance in the state remains people-centred, with policies designed to reflect the interests of the public.

She further explained that the Office of the Head of Service plays a central role in coordinating ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs), ensuring alignment with government priorities and adherence to due process.

The HoS, however, expressed concern over lapses in responding to public correspondence, stressing that civil servants must promptly acknowledge and address communications from citizens.

She said the office would reinforce compliance and improve accountability mechanisms across MDAs.

Shittu also disclosed plans to revive and strengthen the Civil Service Charter, which provides a feedback mechanism for citizens to lodge complaints on service delivery.

“We will revisit the charter to ensure it functions optimally and that negligence is appropriately sanctioned,” she said.

On collaboration, she called for a stronger partnership with NOA in sensitisation campaigns aimed at reawakening diligence, discipline and ethical conduct among civil servants.

“There is a need to appeal to the conscience of workers and restore core values of the civil service. Without this, the system risks gradual decline,” she warned.

Shittu urged NOA to continuously provide feedback on service delivery across MDAs, assuring that issues raised would be treated with urgency and sincerity.
She expressed optimism that the visit would mark the beginning of sustained collaboration between both institutions.

Gov. Mbah Nominated for 4 Independent Newspapers’ Silver Jubilee Awards

The Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, has been nominated in four award categories in the Independent Newspapers Silver Jubilee and 2025 Awards ceremony billed for this Saturday.

Mbah was named in the Education Reformer Governor of the Year, Financial Architect Governor of the Year, Infrastructure Champion Governor of the Year, and Outstanding Governor of the Year categories.

This was conveyed to Mbah in a letter signed by the Chairman of the Awards Committee, Yemi Adebisi, and the Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers, Steve Omanufeme, which also disclosed that the awards ceremony would hold at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

“The Board of Editors of Independent Newspapers Limited writes to convey to you your nomination in four different categories, namely: Education Reformer Governor of the Year 2025, Financial Architect Governor of the Year 2025, Outstanding Governor of the Year 2025, and Infrastructure Champion Governor of the Year 2025, the only one among your peers to be so nominated in this Silver Jubilee Edition of the Independent Awards.

“Nigerians have voted in their numbers online for nominees across various categories seen to have demonstrated exceptional oversight, policy innovation, and commitment to the stability and growth of the nation’s economy in general, and in line with the philosophy of this year’s award: ‘Game Changers: Breaking Barriers and Shaping Tomorrow,’ they stated.

On the Financial Architect Governor of the Year 2025, the Board wrote, “Your nomination is in recognition of your exceptional fiscal management, revenue generation, and sustainable economic development, on the back of reforms that seek to transform a civil service-dependent economy into a productive, private sector-led powerhouse.

“This is seen in the 125% Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) growth from N180.5 billion in 2024 to a record N406.77 billion in 2025, in addition to the N355.2 billion, or 87.4% revenue derived from the recovery and revitalisation of moribund state assets.

“Our Board of Editors also shortlisted you for implementing advanced technology to ensure traceability, accountability, and transparency, while effectively plugging long-standing revenue leakages in the state’s financial system, as well as the significant N971.08 billion budget allocated to capital expenditure last year, up 86% from the prior year’s N837.9 billion.

“It is noteworthy that Enugu State under your watch is working towards funding all salaries, pensions, and overhead entirely from IGR, following which federal allocations (FAAC) are either to be saved or strictly reinvested into developmental projects.”

On Infrastructure Champion Governor of the Year 2025, the Independent Newspapers Board of Editors acknowledged the governor’s giant strides in “driving transformative infrastructure development and a capital-intensive approach to physical development, turning Enugu State into a massive construction site, especially with the simultaneous road and urban renewal projects spanning over 1,000 kilometers of roads.

“The transition to 260 Smart Green Schools (one per ward), each of which is a high-tech ecosystem featuring 25 digitally connected classrooms, ICT centers, robotics/AI labs, and solar power at over N1 billion per school.

“Our Board of Editors also shortlisted you for embarking on the 10,000-hectare Smart City that will feature skyscrapers, residential estates, and business districts, monorail transport, and a central utility and sewage system designed to rival global hubs like Dubai.”

On the Education Reformer Governor of the Year nomination, the Editorial Board predicated it on Governor Mbah’s successful transformation of the state’s education sector through policy reforms, infrastructure investment, and innovative learning initiatives backed by an unprecedented financial commitment to the sector and a structural overhaul of basic education that is unique in Nigeria.

“Especially the allocation of 33 per cent of the state budget to education in 2024 and 2025, thereby exceeding the UNESCO recommendation of between 15 and 20 per cent.”

The Board equally noted the unprecedented scale of 260 Smart Green Schools constructed by the government, a complete overhaul of the primary and secondary school curriculum to align with global digital standards, and the earmarking of N30 billion in the 2026 budget, as signed into law in December 2025, for daily school feeding in smart schools.

Heirs Insurance, United Capital partner on self-care, wealth for women

    By Taiye Olayemi

Heirs Insurance Group, in partnership with United Capital Plc, has unveiled an initiative to promote self-care and financial empowerment among Nigerian women.

This is contained in a statement issued by Heirs Insurance Group on Monday in Lagos.

The organisations hosted a “Yoga and Money Meet Up,” on April 11, a wellness and financial literacy event designed to equip women with tools for personal wellbeing and wealth creation.

The event featured guided yoga and stress management sessions, alongside expert-led discussions on insurance, investment and asset protection.

According to the organisers, the initiative reflects their commitment to making financial wellness more relevant and accessible to women.

Mrs Ifesinachi Okoli-Okpagu, Chief Marketing Officer of Heirs Insurance Group, said the programme underscored the link between wellness and financial security.

“Self-care is not just about indulgence; it involves making deliberate choices that protect one’s physical, mental and financial wellbeing.

“For many women balancing careers, businesses and family, this initiative addresses the need to safeguard assets while managing life’s responsibilities,” she said.

Okoli-Okpagu also introduced the firm’s HerMotor insurance plan, designed for female motorists.

She said the product offers comprehensive coverage against accidents, fire and theft, as well as 24/7 emergency roadside assistance.

According to her, the plan, delivered in partnership with AA Rescue, also includes a reward programme with access to discounts on wellness services.

Also, Dr Odiri Oginni, Managing Director of United Capital Asset Management, said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to advancing women’s empowerment.

“Financial independence and personal wellness are interconnected.

“By creating platforms that address both, we are enabling women to confidently pursue and achieve their goals,” she said.

Oginni added that the company’s Wealth for Women Fund was developed to provide accessible investment opportunities and long-term financial security.

The organisations said the initiative aligns with their broader goal of promoting financial education and protection among women.

Heirs Insurance Group is a subsidiary of Heirs Holdings, while United Capital Plc provides financial and investment services across Africa.
