Western military units, facilities in Ukraine are Russia’s legitimate targets: Moscow

MOSCOW,  (Xinhua) /Flowerbudnews:  — Any military units and facilities deployed by Western countries on Ukrainian territory will be regarded as legitimate targets of the Russian Armed Forces, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said in a statement on Thursday.

“These warnings have been issued repeatedly at the highest level and remain valid,” she said, adding that the deployment of Western facilities will be deemed foreign intervention, which poses a direct threat to the security of not only Russia but also other European states.

The new militaristic declarations issued by the so-called coalition of willing parties and Kiev have turned them into a veritable “axis of war,” she said.

Zakharova stressed that the West’s plan for the further militarization of Ukraine is far from a peaceful settlement, but rather aimed at continuing militarization, escalating and expanding the conflict.

The statement said a peaceful settlement of the conflict is possible only by addressing its root causes, including restoring Ukraine’s neutral, non-aligned status, its demilitarization and “denazification,” respect for the linguistic, cultural and religious rights of ethnic Russians, Russian-speaking citizens and national minorities, and recognition of the current territorial realities.

Zakharova said these goals would be achieved either through political and diplomatic means or through the special military operation, adding that Russian forces retain the initiative on the battlefield.

NEW YORK, January 8. /TASS/. An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer has shot dead a female protestor in Minneapolis, the Associated Press (AP) news agency reported.

According to the report, ICE officers demanded a woman, whose vehicle has stopped across the middle of the road, to leave her vehicle. When the car started to move forward, another ICE officer opened fire at the driver. The woman died of injuries on the site.

Describing the incident as “an act of domestic terrorism,” the US Department of Homeland Security said the woman was trying to run over ICE officers with her vehicle, and the officers acted in self-defense.

“Today, ICE officers in Minneapolis were conducting targeted operations when rioters began blocking ICE officers and one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them – an act of domestic terrorism,” the department’s Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin wrote on the X social network. “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots. <…> The alleged perpetrator was hit and is deceased.”

In turn, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey described ICE officers’ actions as “reckless,” telling ICE to “get <…> out of Minneapolis”.

Meanwhile, Governor of Minnesota Tim Walz demanded “a full, fair, and expeditious investigation to ensure accountability and justice.”

The US administration has been holding large-scale operations to detain illegal migrants since late 2025. The Minneapolis-St. Paul agglomeration is home to the largest Somali diaspora worldwide.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that about 25 million people had entered the country illegally before he came to power, and has advocated stricter immigration policies. After the inauguration, the president introduced a state of emergency on the US border with Mexico. Trump promised to ensure the largest operation in American history to deport illegal migrants.

Trump’s political opponents accuse his administration of overly harsh actions against migrants.

  • CIA, KGB once funded Nigeria’s labour movement — Obasanjo

CIA, KGB once funded Nigeria’s labour movement — Obasanjo

    Ex-President Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has disclosed that Nigeria’s organised labour movement was, at a critical stage in its history, funded by foreign intelligence agencies, a development he said exposed the country’s labour system to external control and raised grave concerns about national sovereignty.

Obasanjo made the revelation at the 85th birthday celebration and public presentation of the memoir of a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Hassan Sunmonu, titled “Memoirs of an African Trade Union Icon: Organise, Don’t Agonise”.

The gathering of labour leaders, policymakers and civil society actors evolved into a broader reflection on the past, present and future of trade unionism in Nigeria.

According to the former president, Nigeria’s labour space during the Cold War era was dominated by two powerful labour organisations which, though Nigerian in name, were allegedly financed and influenced by opposing global power blocs.

He said one faction received support from the Soviet Union’s KGB, while the other was funded by the United States’ Central Intelligence Agency, a situation he described as unhealthy and dangerous for an independent nation.

“As far as you remember, when Gooduck was leading one of the two major labour then Adebola, these two labour organizations are Nigerian labour organizations but they were not organized or funded by Nigeria,” Obasanjo said. “I don’t know if you know that, but that was the reality.

“One was being financed by KGB, that is the truth, and the other one was being financed by CIA, that was the truth, and then I came on the scene.”

He explained that this reality shaped his resolve, as military Head of State, to reform the labour movement and insulate it from foreign interference by building a structure that was organised, controlled and financed by Nigerians.

“I needed a Nigerian labour union organised by Nigeria, controlled by Nigeria, financed by Nigeria. So I decided there was going to be a labour union reform,” Obasanjo said, recalling that the reform process was spearheaded by Justice Adebiyi.

He noted that Sunmonu was among those who initially questioned his involvement in labour matters.

Obasanjo said, “Hassan was one of those who was forefront to ask, what do I know about labour that I’m asking for reform? What is my business?”

Obasanjo said the reform process eventually led to the restructuring of trade unions and the enactment of laws that gave birth to the Nigeria Labour Congress as a unified national platform.

He stressed that the emergence of the NLC leadership was achieved without direct government interference, restoring credibility to organised labour and fostering relative industrial stability.

“Of course, I don’t know anything about labour but I know that I wanted a Nigerian labour organization organized by Nigeria, headed by Nigeria, and funded by Nigeria,” he said.

“When Justice Adebiyi finished his job and we reformed the labour and party law establishing NLC, what happened? Without government’s hand, they elected their leader and Hassan became the first leader they elected. I don’t know how I felt at that time, but I felt comfortable.”

Sunmonu, who led the NLC from 1978 to 1984, is widely regarded as one of the architects of modern trade unionism in Nigeria.

Reflecting on his relationship with Sunmonu, Obasanjo said government and labour were bound to interact and even depend on each other, but must do so without compromising their independence.

He recalled advising Sunmonu to openly criticise government policies after private engagements in order to preserve labour’s credibility and the trust of workers.

He added that the introduction of a compulsory check-off system ensured sustainable union funding and permanently eliminated foreign financial influence from Nigeria’s labour movement.

Obasanjo further praised Sunmonu for elevating Nigerian labour on the continental and global stage, describing him as the most influential figure in the country’s labour movement after the late Pa Michael Imoudu.

The occasion also provided a platform for the current President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero, to deliver a blistering critique of contemporary economic policies, new tax laws and Nigeria’s rising public debt. Ajaero warned that the systematic exclusion of labour from critical policy processes was deepening poverty and undermining democratic governance.

He argued that the philosophy captured in Sunmonu’s memoir, Organise, Don’t Agonise, stood in sharp contrast to what Nigerians were currently experiencing, accusing the government of preferring “enrage over engage.”

“Tax laws that tax the national minimum wage, impose heavier burdens on workers and the poor, and worsen excruciating poverty are not progressive but regressive,” Ajaero said.

He insisted that labour was deliberately excluded from the Presidential Committee on Tax because workers were “meant to be on the menu.”

Raising broader concerns about governance and accountability, the NLC president echoed Sunmonu’s recent public interrogation of Nigeria’s growing debt profile.

“Where are all the monies being borrowed by the federal government?” he asked. “It is from this standpoint that we must speak directly to the Nigerian Government.”

Ajaero warned that bypassing key stakeholders, distorting Acts of Parliament and ruling “by strong arm” eroded public trust and threatened national stability.

He said the central message of Organise, Don’t Agonise also imposed a responsibility on the state to engage citizens sincerely rather than provoke frustration and social unrest.

“The philosophy of ‘Organise, Don’t Agonise’ also implies that the state has a duty to engage, not enrage.

There is an urgent need for deeper, more sincere, and structured engagement with the trade union movement at all levels,” he said.

“Policies, from fuel pricing to taxation, from wage to social services, must be crafted with the active, respected input of those who represent the workers and the broader masses.”

“To sideline the organised voice of labour is to design policies on shaky, exclusionary foundations, destined to generate crisis and agony as is being witnessed currently,” he added.

The NLC president also demanded the immediate constitution of the PENCOM board and called for clarity and restraint in the implementation of the new tax laws, warning that persisting on the current path was dangerous for tax administration and democracy.

While celebrating Sunmonu as a symbol of courage, integrity and principled engagement, Ajaero said the event had transcended personal honour and become a moment of national reckoning on the condition of Nigerian workers.

He urged the Federal Government to urgently address workers’ wages ahead of the next statutory minimum wage negotiation and called for a decisive shift toward inclusive governance.

“Comrade Sunmonu, as we launch your book today, we pledge to keep its central message alive,” he said.

“We will continue to organise. We will continue to challenge power. We will continue to fight for a Nigeria where no worker has to agonise over poverty, insecurity, heavy taxation or a stolen future riddled with national debt.”

Efforts to obtain official government reactions to the concerns raised were unsuccessful as of press time.

  • Deputy Senate President Lauds Collaboration Between Executive and Legislative

The Deputy Senate President, Barau Jubrin, says the wonderful collaboration between the executive and the legislature is borne out of President Bola Tinubu’s antecedent and understanding as a former governor and Senator.

Delivering a lecture at the 15th Convocation Ceremony of the Al-Hikmah University,  Atere, Ilorin on Wednesday,  Jubrin dispelled insinuations in certain quarters that the National Assembly members are subservient to the executive.

Senator Jubrin in the lecture with the entitled: “Managing executive-legislative relations towards democratic consolidation in Nigeria’s fourth republic,” says President Tinubu understands the game very well. He interacts with the lawmakers very well.

“As we speak there is a wonderful collaboration between the executive and legislative arms of government. Reason being that the president is a Senator.

“Whenever he wants to present any bill to the National Assembly he normally meets with the executive members to discuss about the bill before it is being brought for debate. We will correct the mistakes if there are any. That is why the bills get accelerated passage.

“That is why we have the atmosphere of good collaboration with President Tinubu and people see it as being rubber-stamp of the executive.

“When peace can give the nation what it wants why engage in fighting? At the beginning of this fourth republic, there was this lack of Harmony between the legislature and executive because of the psyche of Nigerians occasioned by prolonged military rule.

“The then President thought he should have maximum powers. He was not relating with us the way the current president is relating. I was at the House of Representatives then. I can see the difference. It was like an order then.

“President Tinubu knows the game very well. This collaboration is very essential for us to have a smooth running of government.

“But some people construe the collaboration as being subservient to the executive. It is because we interact on a continuous basis.”

The Senator continued that “Nigeria’s Fourth Republic has endured longer than any previous democratic experiment in our history. This endurance, however, must be matched with qualitative democratic deepening. Managing Executive–Legislature relations with wisdom, restraint, and constitutional fidelity is central to this task.

“As graduands of Al-Hikmah University step into society, I urge you to uphold democratic values, demand accountable governance, and contribute intellectually and ethically to Nigeria’s democratic consolidation. Democracy is not sustained by institutions alone, but by enlightened citizens and principled leaders.”

In his speech,  the Vice-Chancellor,  Prof Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji said as part of efforts to strengthen the global outlook of the University, it has been enrolled in the Times Higher Education Sustainable Network.

According to him, the strategic step qualifies the institution for full participation in the Time Higher Education (THE) Sustainable Impact and further enhances our visibility on the global stage.

“On the 9th of October 2025, Times Higher  Education confirmed Al-Hikmah University’s first ever entry into the World University ranking recently released.

“Our goal is simple: to build a vibrant research culture that competes confidently on the global stage, while paying glowing tribute to Dr Abdulazeez  Ayinla, Sulaiman Yusuf and MBO Yusuf, who as co-principal investigators, were ranked among the top 200 research proposal in the most recent TETFund National Research Fund (NRF)  exercise.

Prof Oladimeji disclosed that some infrastructural projects ate ongoing in the Institution: a new nursing complex ar Adeta Campus, expansion abs remodeling of the Cadaver Laboratory, a new Faculty of Law Complex at Atere, a new Faculty of Humanities abd Social Sciences at Atere Campus, and Engineering Workshop.
