How defendant allegedly used minister’s name to defraud lawmaker, witness tells court

Rabiu-Rangers Abdullahi, a witness, on Monday, told the Federal High Court in Abuja how David Daure, the 2nd defendant in the trial of an Abuja-based lawyer and three other social media influencers attempted to use minister’s name to defraud Sen. Shehu Umar Buba.

Abdullahi, the 2nd prosecution witness (PW-2), stated this before Justice Rita Offili-Ajumogobia while being led in evidence-in-chief by Leyii Abueh, counsel for the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

The AGF and Minister of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, had, in December 2025, taken over the prosecution of the matter from the Inspector General (I-G) of Police.

Ahmed Abdulrahman (1st defendant) and his co-defendants were initially being prosecuted by the I-G.

The I-G, in the 11-count charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/526/2025 and filed by Anthony Egwu on Oct. 6, 2025, named David Daure, Ishaq Muhammed, Abdulrashid Musa and Nasir Abubakar as 2nd to 5th defendants respectively.

The defendants were, on Oct. 30, 2025, arraigned on 11-count charge which also bordered on alleged cybercrime, defamation, advance fee fraud, among others.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the counts and they were remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre before they were admitted to bail.

Giving his evidence on Monday, the witness, who said he is a businessman and a politician from Bauchi State, said he got to know Daure about five years ago through Facebook.

“He is my friend on Facebook. He has my phone number and I have his number too. We communicate day in, day out.

“On 8th September, 2025, on his Facebook handle, he wrote that there is a protest that will take place in London, Charterhouse about Senator Shehu Buba, that he is sponsoring terrorism in Nigeria,” he said.

The PW-2 said because Daure knew that he was close to Sen. Buba, he sent him the screenshot of the message on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025.

“And he said the protest will be on Friday (Sept 12, 2025) and that he knows the organiser of the protest.

“He asked me where I was so that he could come and meet me and I told him to come to a place, where they sell meat,” he said.

The witness said when Daure came to him, he asked him who was organising the protest “and he said his name is George Onmonya.”

According to Abdullahi, I asked him who is sponsoring it and he said it is a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and his name is Yusuf Maitama Tuggar.

“I asked him what do you want me to do now and he said I should talk to Senator Buba.

“But I called his (senator’s) S.A. (Special Assistant) on Security, his name is Danladi and he said he (Daure) would be investigated whether the whole thing was a plan to dupe us.”

The witness said the lawmaker’s S.A. on Security later informed him after investigation that there was no protest at London Charterhouse and that Daure was lying.

He said George Onmonya alleged that the minister gave them 10, 000 pounds to organise the protest.

Abdullahi said Danladi then requested Daure’s phone number from him and he started communicating directly with the 2nd defendant.

“Daure and S.A. started talking and Daure asked for 10, 000 pounds but it was reduced to N5 million.

“Daure started calling me in order to collect the money and I started recording him.

“I took all the conversations with Daure and sent it to the S.A. on Security.

“Daure asked me on Thursday to send the money so that he could talk to the organisers of the protest because it was fixed for Friday,” he narrated.

The witness told the court that an arrangement was later made to pay Daure the N5 million and that when he arrived at the scene, he was arrested.

“That is all that I know,” he said.

Under cross-examination, Abdul Mohammed, SAN, who appeared for 1st defendant (Abdulrahman), sought to tender the two statements made by the witness to the police in evidence and they were admitted in evidence and marked as exhibits.

When he was asked if he must have exaggerated the naration, the witness said: “I didn’t have any reason to exaggerate anything. I only said the exact thing that happened.”

When he was asked if it was the exact things that happened that he told the police, the witness responded in affirmative.

When the lawyer asked him to go though the statement he made and tell the court where he wrote that “Daure screenshot the message and sent to him,” the witness admitted it was not in his statement.

The witness denied calling Daure on phone in order to have physical meeting with him.

Rather, Abdullahi said it was Daure that sent a message to him to ask his whereabouts.

After all the lawyers to the defendants cross-examined the PW-2, the witness was discharged from the witness box and the judge adjourned the matter until Feb..10 for continuation of trial.

In count one, the defendants were alleged to have, sometime in 2025, conspired among themselves “to commit an offence, to wit; cyberstalking against Senator Shehu Buba Umar.”

The offence is said to be contrary to Section 27(1)(b) and punishable under Section 21(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention etc.) Act 2015 (as amended) 2024.

In count three, Abdulrahman was alleged to have, sometime in 2025, intentionally sent a video via his Tiktok handle with user name “Kibanna Channel” and his Youtube channel to defame the lawmaker by linking him to sponsorship of banditry with a view to tarnishing his image as a serving Senator.

The suspect was alleged to have stated that “Senator Umar, a serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a sponsor of banditry and called for his investigation, a statement you made by means of computer systems and network knowing same to be false, for the purpose of causing breakdown of law and order and causing the Senator fear of death”.

The offence Is also said to be contrary to Section 24(1)(5) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015 (as amended) 2024, among other counts, among others.

  • Federal Polytechnic Ayede Highlights Research, Skills, and infrastructure Feats at First Convocation Press Briefing

Federal Polytechnic Ayede Highlights Research, Skills, and infrastructure Feats at First Convocation Press Briefing

History, progress, and promise converged at the Permanent Site of Federal Polytechnic Ayede as the Pioneer Rector, Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hameed, FNSE, addressed the media at the institution’s first-ever Pre-Convocation Press Conference—an event that set the tone for the Polytechnic’s maiden combined convocation ceremonies for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic sessions.

Established on January 19, 2021, the institution has, within five years, built an enviable trajectory of academic excellence, infrastructural expansion, and stakeholder collaboration, positioning itself as a fast-rising centre for technical, vocational, and entrepreneurial education in Nigeria.

“This engagement is not only historic; it reflects our commitment to transparency, accountability, and partnership with the media as we showcase what has been achieved in a very short time,” the Rector stated.

The combined convocation, which commenced with a Church Service at the Temporary Site in Iresa-Pupa, spans six days of activities that reflect both academic pride and institutional culture. Highlights include a Novelty Match between teaching and non-teaching staff, a maiden Convocation Lecture at the Permanent Site to be delivered by Dr. Zacch Adelabu Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), and chaired by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, GCON.

The grand ceremony on Thursday will witness the award of National Diplomas to 325 graduands, presentation of prizes, and the conferment of the Fellowship of the Polytechnic on Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, Dr. Zacch Adelabu Adedeji, and Engr. Dr. Abubakar Isa. The programme concludes with Jumat Prayer on Friday.

The Rector expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, under whose Renewed Hope Agenda the Polytechnic has thrived, as well as to the Hon. Minister of Education, NBTE, TETFund, and the Governing Council led by Hon. Yakubu Dati(FNIPR).

He acknowledged the pivotal role of traditional rulers led by the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, alongside other monarchs and host communities whose support has been instrumental since inception. The Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, and the Chairman of Ogo-Oluwa Local Government, Hon. Seun Ojo, were also commended for their cooperation and responsiveness to the Polytechnic’s infrastructure needs.

Particular mention was made of Dr. Zacch Adelabu Adedeji for facilitating the access road project from Idi-Araba, now under construction—an intervention described as transformative for the Permanent Site.

From an initial approval of four National Diploma programmes in 2023, the Polytechnic now runs thirteen NBTE-approved ND programmes across five Schools, reflecting rapid academic expansion. These programmes span Engineering, Environmental, Agricultural, Management, and Science and Technology disciplines, supported by a robust General Studies Department.

Through the Centre for Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (CSAED), every graduand earns at least two additional vocational certificates, strengthening employability and enterprise creation.

The combined convocation will graduate 325 students. For 2023/2024, 138 graduands emerged, including 29 distinctions, while the 2024/2025 session produced 187 graduands with 43 distinctions.

The Overall Best Graduating Students, each with a CGPA of 3.96, are Miss Taiwo Ibukunoluwa Arinola (Science Laboratory Technology) and Mr. Olapese Quadri Ayofe (Agricultural Technology).

In five years, the Polytechnic has executed 68 major projects across its Permanent and Temporary campuses, funded through TETFund interventions, federal appropriations, consult initiatives, and philanthropic support.

Ongoing projects include a Main Library, Multi-Skills Centre, Electrical/Electronics Laboratories, and 33KVA power installation. Donor contributions from eminent sons of Ogbomoso and organisations have significantly complemented federal efforts.

Beyond infrastructure, the institution has completed over 90 Institution-Based Research projects and nine TETFund fabrication projects addressing practical challenges in agriculture, construction, food processing, and digital manufacturing.

Fifteen academic staff have benefited from TETFund postgraduate scholarships, while over 190 staff have attended conferences and trainings locally and internationally.

The Rector reaffirmed the Polytechnic’s commitment to consolidating operations at the Permanent Site in Ayede, symbolised by hosting key convocation events there.

However, he made a passionate appeal for continued support in critical areas: access roads from Oolo and Odo-Oba, staff and student hostels through PPP arrangements, potable water, electricity, healthcare, digital infrastructure, and recreational facilities.

“The government alone cannot meet all these needs in the shortest possible time. We call on partners, agencies, communities, and individuals to join us in building this institution into a model Polytechnic,” he urged.

The press conference was not merely a prelude to a convocation; it was a compelling narrative of how vision, leadership, collaboration, and community ownership have transformed a newly established Polytechnic into a thriving academic institution within half a decade.

As Federal Polytechnic Ayede prepares to graduate its first sets of students, it does so not only with certificates in hand, but with a powerful statement: the Polytechnic has come to stay—and to lead.

Appeal Court Upholds Senate Suspension of  Sen  Natasha

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja ruled on Monday that the Nigerian Senate acted within its powers in suspending Kogi Central lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

A three-member panel of Justices of the Appellate Court unanimously ruled that it was within the powers of the Senate to have suspended Uduaghan for misconduct.

The Court added that the Kogi lawmaker was unable to prove that parliamentary privilege or her constitutional rights were breached as a result of her suspension from the Senate.

However, it vacated the contempt proceeding and the ₦5 million fine that was awarded against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan over the satirical apology she made to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

More so, the appellate court, in its lead verdict that was delivered by Justice A. B. Muhammed, held that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was not wrong to have denied the Appellant, who was not on the official seat that was allotted to her during plenary on February 20, 2025, the opportunity to speak.

It held that the Senate President is empowered by the Rules to allocate seats to members, adding that lawmakers are only allowed to speak from seats allocated to them.

  • Wives Who Say These 11 Phrases To Their Husbands Likely Have Zero Respect For Him Whatsoever

Wives Who Say These 11 Phrases To Their Husbands Likely Have Zero Respect For Him Whatsoever

wife holding her hand up to husband disrespecting him

While “respect” can be a subjective, elusive term in the context of relationships, according to professor and philosopher Berit Brogaard, there’s no denying that it’s essential to build happy, healthy, long-lasting connections. From offering a sense of dignity to your partner to creating a safe space for them to express their emotions, and even making decisions with their well-being in mind, without respect, in its many forms, partners can fall out of touch.

Of course, it can also be expressed, and sabotaged, in casual conversations at home. For example, wives who say certain phrases to their husbands likely have zero respect for him whatsoever. They’re not interested in crafting safe spaces or offering dignity to his humanity, but instead protecting their own convenience and comfort.

Wives who say these 11 phrases to their husbands likely have zero respect for him whatsoever

    1. ‘I shouldn’t have to explain this to you’

woman walking away from husband saying I shouldn't have to explain this to youDragana Gordic | Shutterstock

Asking for help, even with a partner at home, can be incredibly uncomfortable and difficult for many people, especially for men who have been socialized from a young age to believe that “strength” is built by invulnerability and hyper-independence. Despite that obstacle of discomfort, a Stanford Report argues that asking for help actually makes people feel more empowered and strengthens their bonds with others.

However, if a wife’s response to her husband’s need for support is always “I shouldn’t have to explain this to you,” that not only encourages him to suppress his emotions and concerns, but also to isolate himself from the support in the relationship that everyone needs to feel important and heard.

    2. ‘Why can’t you be more like him?’

frustrated wife telling husband why can't you be more like himPeopleImages | Shutterstock

We’re often wired to compare ourselves, because finding belonging and spaces where we “fit in” is a natural human instinct. However, the current state of our “comparison culture” is entirely out of hand, encouraging people to hold themselves and their partners to unrealistic expectations and standards.

A wife who doesn’t respect her husband, as he is right now, is likely to use phrases like “Why can’t you be more like him?” or “her husband doesn’t do that” to shame him into fitting into these rigid expectations. She’s not respecting him or offering him any dignity, but pressuring him to adopt inauthentic behaviors.

Of course, it’s always okay to express concerns about how your partner is showing up for you or in a marriage, but if it comes at the expense of their identity, self-esteem, or connection, it’s likely disrespectful.

    3. ‘Here we go again’

woman ignoring husband and saying here we go again to his emotionsSrdjan Randjelovic | Shutterstock

According to a study from the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, it’s often the person on the receiving end of disrespect who feels disconnected from their partner and relationship in the end. There’s an element of resentment and intention that’s impossible to unwind without honesty and open, vulnerable communication — the things that often go overlooked when disrespect is present.

When their partner passive-aggressively brings up concerns, with a phrase like “here we go again,” or completely overlooks and invalidates their feelings by shaming them for speaking up, they get a little bit farther away emotionally every single time.

    4. ‘You don’t understand’

Instead of taking the time to express themselves and work toward resolution in arguments, a disrespectful wife will immediately assume that her partner isn’t “capable of” understanding where she’s coming from. “Understanding” isn’t something that pops out of thin air — it’s something that you have to intentionally cultivate with behaviors like actively listening and creating a safe space.

As a study from Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin explains, when couples feel understood by each other, their relationship happiness and satisfaction grow. However, if a wife is using these phrases with her husband, it’s not just understanding together that suffers, but also respect and trust.

    5. ‘I don’t care’

Even if romantic affection and appreciation are widely discussed in the framework of relationship health, experts like research professor Peter Gray suggest that respect is actually more important than love in marriages and long-term relationships. You have to trust that the person you’re with not only respects you but also cares about what you have to say and has your best interests in mind.

However, wives who say phrases like “I don’t care about what you think” or “Did I ask?” to their husbands likely have zero respect or care for them whatsoever. She’s not engaged with what he thinks and likely perceives herself as “better” than him — whether it’s emotionally or otherwise — in ways that sabotage their communication and trust.

If a partner says something like “you’re overreacting” or “you’re so sensitive” when you’re expressing emotions and concerns, what they’re really afraid of is accountability and vulnerability. Whether they’re running from owning up to their mistakes in the marriage or trying to justify their misguided sense of superiority in the marriage, their actions only convey a sense of disrespect that’s impossible to run from.

Much like a study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggests about the “point of no return” in relationships, disengagement with a partner, in hard conversations, arguments, and vulnerable interactions, will eventually be the end of a relationship.

When a partner uses a phrase like “I knew this would happen,” it’s clear that they’re expecting the worst from their partner and relationship. They don’t have a foundation of trust to support connection or a sense of connection with their partner that cultivates respect.

As relationship therapist Cheryl Groskopf explained, “This phrase is drenched in negativity. It’s the verbal equivalent of expecting the worst and then patting yourself on the back when it happens.” It cultivates a sense of hopelessness in a husband that often encourages him to believe that he’s incapable of change or progress.

    8. ‘That’s not my problem’

When you’re in a marriage with someone, you’re on a team, whether it’s convenient and comfortable or not. You resolve problems from the same team. Plan your futures and make decisions together. That’s how you cultivate an aura of respect — by relying on, supporting, and crafting togetherness with your partner.

However, women who don’t respect their husbands often weaponize these experiences as “conditional” based on how they’re feeling or whether they’ve gotten something they want. They use phrases like “that’s not my problem” to run from discomfort and others like “if you loved me, you’d…” to guilt their husbands into doing things for them they wouldn’t offer in return.

They’re inherently avoidant partners because they’re more concerned about their own comfort, convenience, and superiority than truly showing up to support the person they’re married to.

While feelings of hopelessness and disconnect in a relationship can sometimes be chalked up to marital burnout, according to a study from BMC Women’s Health, where partners are exhausted by loneliness or disconnection, it can also be sparked by disrespect from a single partner.

If a wife is constantly dismissing her husband’s emotions, shaming him into suppressing his concerns, and chipping away at his self-esteem with phrases like “you’re impossible,” he’s probably going to feel hopeless and alone. He’s the “scapegoat,” not just for relationship issues, but for her own feelings of insecurity or shame.

If a wife shuts down in a conflict or runs away from vulnerability with phrases like “I’m not talking about this,” she’s not only sabotaging the relationship’s health, but also her partner’s. According to a study from Health Psychology Review, being encouraged to suppress emotions can often lead to adverse health outcomes, both physically and mentally. On top of that, people who bottle up their emotions often deal with more aggressive tendencies.

So, a wife disrespecting her husband through emotionally manipulative behaviors and phrases like this one will likely end up sabotaging her husband’s health and sparking a cycle of unhealthy dynamics. She pressures him to bottle up his emotions, leading to aggression and emotional outbursts, only to turn around and shame him for “ruining” the marriage with these misguided coping mechanisms.

    11. ‘You’re so needy’

Part of offering respect and dignity to a partner is giving them a safe space to express themselves. Even when their partners don’t agree or have their own opinions, offering respect means listening, supporting, and accepting a partner. However, wives who say phrases like “you’re so needy” to their husbands in response to their vulnerability likely have zero respect for him whatsoever.

There’s a reason why men often need relationships with women more than their partners — they offer an intentional space for emotional connection and vulnerability that their platonic relationships don’t always have. But if they’re not receiving this safe space, and instead are being pressured to suppress emotions and dismiss their concerns, chances are they’re going to continue to exist in a cycle of loneliness and disconnection.

Prof. Uche Veronica Amazigo, Nigeria’s renowned scientist and recipient of several international awards, is among honorees from across the world celebrated last week by the Thai Royal Family, administrators of the prestigious Prince Mahidol Award (PMA), which she won in 2012.

Since 1992, the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation has bestowed the Award on individuals whose contributions to Medicine and Public Health have had a profound and lasting impact on global health. In 2025, it reached a historic milestone, “with 100 distinguished laureates, whose collective efforts have shaped medical advancements and public health policies worldwide.”

The laureates include three Africans – the late Prof. Frederick Sai of Ghana (1995), Prof. Amazigo (2012), and the late internationally renowned public health expert Prof. Adetokunbo Lucas, the first Nigerian to have won the award in 1999.

Seven of the PMA Laureates have also won the Nobel Prize.

The 45 American Awardees include Walter C. Willett, a nutrition researcher (2025), and Alfred Sommer, an ophthalmologist and professor of epidemiology (1997).

PMA honorees from other countries include Japan’s world leader in bio-organic chemistry, Prof. Satoshi Ōmura (1997), who also won the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 2025, and former WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan of Hong Kong (1998).

To commemorate the 100-milestone, the Foundation, under the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as the President, hosted the PMA Laureates in Thailand’s northern Nan Province from 2-5 February 2026.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej founded the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation in 1992, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his father, Prince Mahidol Adulyadej’s birth.

The Foundation said the 2026 “special gathering aims to foster connections among past laureates, reflect on the legacy of the Award, and explore future opportunities to advance global health.”

The “100 Prince Mahidol Laureates Celebration Award Nexus (PMAN)” featured the launch of a publication and a display of all the laureates in paintings with write-ups on their discoveries and contributions to medicine and public health.

The laureates visited Nan Province’s Artistic, Cultural and Academic Heritage Centres, and met the Wolith monks at the Phumin Temple. They also toured the 888-metre Nan Cultural Art Route and explored the Pharma-Agroforestry District.

According to the PMA Foundation, Prof. Amazigo “pioneered community-directed treatment, transforming control of neglected tropical diseases in Africa by empowering communities. As Director of WHO’s African Programme on Onchocerciasis (River blindness), she expanded treatment to millions across 19 countries… She continues to advance community health through school feeding, education initiatives, and the establishment of affordable healthcare services for marginalized populations.”

Under Amazigo’s leadership, the WHO/APOC Programme, one of the most successful health interventions in Africa, received the One-million-Euro António Champalimaud Vision Award in 2011, the biggest global award for outstanding contributions to the prevention of visual impairment and blindness.

She has also provided expertise to the Campaign by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to eliminate malaria in the region, through an integrated vector control strategy, as happened with the successful River Blindness control programme.
In 2018, Amazigo was among nine personalities and an institution, honoured by the Hallmarks of Labour Foundation (HLF), which “celebrates Nigerians, Africans and people of the Black race, who have achieved success through hard work, honesty, integrity and justice in every field of human endeavour.”

Her “HLF Role Model Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Public Health” acknowledged her as “one of the few Africans to have led a specialised UN Agency, overseeing a highly successful multilateral, multidisciplinary partnership in global public health.”

Uche Amazigo is married to Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, John Amazigo. Both are Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science and are blessed with children.

A Knight of the National Order of Burkina Faso (2011), she has, since retiring as WHO/APOC Director, established an NGO, the Pan-African Community Initiative on Education and Health (PACIEH), which trains and empowers mothers to provide a comprehensive feeding and health programme for their children in rural schools.

A committed scientist, philanthropist and humanist with a large heart for the poor, Amazigo, is the brain behind the Goodwill Medical Centre (GMC), constructed and equipped by the TY Danjuma Foundation, in Enugu, eastern Nigeria, which provides quality primary and secondary healthcare services to low-income families, transforming lives in its host and neighbouring communities.

Commissioned in November 2023 by its chief benefactor, General TY Danjuma, the hospital, in April 2025, constructed and unveiled for public use a multi-million-Naira iron bridge across a river linking at least three urban slums to essential services in Enugu State.

By removing the transportation barrier in the area, the Avah River Bridge has opened up healthcare and other essential services to forgotten Enugu East LGA communities.

The GMC’s maternal, newborn and child health, eye care and family medicine units provide essential services to surrounding communities and beyond, with a commitment to achieving zero maternal and child mortality despite the challenges.

In February 2025, the hospital signed an MoU with the Enugu East Local Government Authority to significantly increase the number of health insurance beneficiaries.

The hospital collaborates with local groups and residents to address their needs, with resilience, vision and unwavering commitment to saving lives and inspiring community buy-in and collective ownership of the Centre’s programmes.

In these days of global economic difficulties, when scarce financial resources are shared among competing needs, the health sector is usually the most severely affected.

By contributing to revolutionising healthcare delivery and other essential services to rural communities through public-private partnership, the GMC is setting the pace through a model that complements government efforts in transforming the lives of poor communities for accelerated development and progress.
