Ex-CAN Chairman Advocates Unity Among Christian Organisations.
By Adewale Owoade
A former Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), in Oyo State, Pastor Benjamen Akanmu, has urged Christian bodies to avoid individualism, emphasising the importance of unity among Christians.
This call to action is reminiscent of Cardinal Robert Sarah’s warning against disunity among Christians, which he described as “counter-witnessing”.
Pastor Akanmu, Regional Superintendent of the Odubanjo Region of Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria and Overseas, made the remarks while receiving the executive members of the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists (NACJ), Oyo State Chapter, at his residence.
The delegation was led by the Chairman of the association, Lekan Shobowale.
Pastor Akanmu lamented the alarming level of disunity among Christian faiths, stressing that different denominations were intended to serve as interdependent components, collectively advancing the kingdom of God, rather than engaging in unnecessary rivalry.
The cleric appealed to the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and other Christian organisations to foster unity of purpose, guided by the principles of fairness, justice, and equity.
He emphasised the importance of collective action in fulfilling their shared missionary mandate, which remains the cornerstone of their existence.
“Individualism is really causing a huge setback in Christiandom, and this is what is slowing down the progress of Christianity in Nigeria.
“Let’s all unite and fight as one body so as to retain our relevance in the scheme of things , otherwise we will be neglected.”
Mr. Shobowale, NACJ Oyo State Chairman, commended Pastor Akanmu for his visionary leadership and mentorship as the association’s Grand Patron.
He thanked Pastor Akanmu for his guidance and oversight throughout the year, praying for divine strength and wisdom to continue fulfilling his responsibilities.

Shobowale sought Pastor Akanmu’s ongoing support for the Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists’ (NACJ) initiatives in 2025, while also pledging the association’s dedication to spreading the gospel through its coverage of Christian events and activities.
This commitment aligns with the association’s mission to promote Christian values and principles through responsible journalism.
