Closing Clinical Evidence and Practical Application: Prof. Ugwu Set to Deliver UNN Inaugural Lecture
Prof. George Ugwu, a distinguished Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, says that the 251st Inaugural Lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) will be expository, bridging clinical research evidence and practical application to uplift lives.
The 251st UNN Inaugural Lecture, which would hold by 12 noon on Sept. 3, is titled: “The Mother, the Child and the State: My Triumphant Journey from Evidence to Action.”
The lecture would hold at the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance Auditorium, located within the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC), Enugu.
Ugwu, who is also the Enugu State Commissioner for Health, noted that the lecture would have practical take aways for each attendee.
The commissioner, who is also a leading authority in maternal and reproductive healthcare, noted that the lecture “will exemplify from the gown to the town approach of utilisation of clinical scientific research in child and maternal health”.
He said that the lecture promises a deep dive into the complex intersection of maternal health outcomes, child survival, and systemic state intervention, which positive practical evidence had strengthen healthcare in Enugu State.
“I will be highlighting clinical research evidence tailored to transform into actionable public health policies capable of drastically reducing maternal and infant mortality rates across the country and West Africa,” he said.
The historic lecture, hosted under the auspices of Vice-Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, underscores UNN’s enduring commitment to translational research and academic excellence meant to uplift humanity.
The UNN’s Senate Ceremonials Committee, chaired Prof. Ozioma Onuzulike, had ensured seamless preparations for expected guests, including university dons, medical practitioners, policymakers, politicians, community and religious leaders as well as students.
“Attendees can expect a narrative of academic perseverance and real-world impact.
“Prof. Ugwu will highlight key research breakthroughs throughout his career, detailing how empirical data collected in hospital wards and rural health centers informed national policy guidelines and community intervention programmes.”
It would be recalled that Prof. Ugwu, whose medical career spans many years, had made pivotal contributions to public health and clinical medicine as a clinician and technocrat with over 70 academic research publication to his credit.
He holds an MBBS, Master of Public Health (MPH), and fellowships from prestigious international and national surgical colleges—including FWACS, FMCOG, and FICS among others.
