Osun 2026 and Ajibola Basiru’s Exaggerated Political Worth

    By Sarafa Ibrahim
In the build up to the 2022 governorship election, Senator Suraju Ajibola Basiru, popularly known as SRJ, built the image of a ‘General’ with the wand of victory.

As the Director-General of the Gboyega Oyetola Campaign Organisation, Basiru was confident that the All Progressive Congress (APC) will no doubt “retain power in Osun State in the coming election,” emphasising that “I don’t have any doubt at all that Governor Oyetola will win again.”

This was several weeks before the ballots were casted. But when the tally of votes were eventually sorted, Osun people rejected the APC resoundingly. Interestingly, Basiru could only savage a win for his party in two out of 10 local governments in Osun central senatorial district even as the incumbent senator from the district. And nine months later, Basiru failed to secure re-election into the Senate, losing in eight out of the 10 local governments that made up the district.

If the two scenarios tells us anything, it is that Basiru’s standing among the electorate, particularly in the Osun central senatorial district, is quite low and a far cry from the image he consistently try to project. But Basiru seems to struggle with this reality and this was apparent in his latest stunt on the 2026 governorship seat.

Leadership, anywhere, is a practical thing and the best guage is looking into the past. And good enough, Basiru have had a lot of opportunities to prove himself in the past. From 2010 when the emergence of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola as Governor threw up Basiru in the Osun political space, he has had series of opportunities to prove his leadership credentials.

In fact, I was hoping that he would use the subtle declaration for the Osun governorship seat to remind the public of his capacity to impact lives more using the previous offices he occupied as basis. As a former Senator, Basiru should have lot of things to tell the people as a justification for entrusting him with public offices in the past.

But it appears he was not proud of his past records in public offices or maybe, what he achieved is intangible to sway supports. That must be why he is resorting to flaring emotion, playing up Osogbo sentiment as the only basis for his aspiration. But the question that must agitate minds will be that, what exactly has Basiru done for Osogbo to leverage it for political capital?

Looking at the past, it would be hard for any objective mind to point to any. Let us, for a moment, assume that he may have excuses for having no tangible achievement to his credit in Osogbo for the entire time he served as the Attorney-General of Osun state, what can he point to as his achievements in Osogbo as a Senator for four years?

Basiru’s notable achievements as a Senator was the installation of subpar streetlights, which earned him the popular ‘Senator Solar’ nickname, an apparent rebuke of his gross underperformance in office. Yet, this same Basiru make it a habit to deride the remarkable infrastructural renewal that Governor Adeleke has undertaken in just two years in office in Osogbo.

At the moment, Osogbo is the envy of all as critical infrastructures embarked on by Governor Adeleke has completely transformed physical outlook of the ancient city. The spectacular scene that the recently installed solar-powered streetlights adds to the nightlife of Osogbo, particularly on the recently constructed Old Garage–Lameco dual carriageway, is heartwarming.

In the same Osogbo, Governor Adeleke is building a 10-span Oke-Fia overhead bridge and another 4-span overhead bridge at Lameco, both tailored at expanding the infrastructural base of the state capital and enhance economic activities. With these are more than 15 road projects in different locations of Osogbo, aimed at opening up the state capital for increased economic activities and improve the lives of residents. Lest I forget, projects in Osogbo that were abandoned by Basiru’s political ally were taken up by Governor Adeleke and now completed.

All of these are just in two years, with the prospect of many more in the second half of the first four years of the Adeleke administration. Beside, Governor Adeleke has invested in renewing public schools and health centres infrastructure in Osogbo, bringing them to a state where they can better serve the purpose they were meant to for the people. By all measures, what Governor Adeleke has done in Osogbo, and by extension, the whole of Osun state, in two years, far outweighed what his predecessor could ever claim to as achievement in his four years in office.

Glaringly, nothing other than selfishness can explain the deft move to exploit Osogbo in the manner which Basiru did with his aspiration. Because, as the records clearly indicated, Governor Adeleke has done exceptionally well in upgrading the infrastructure of Osogbo– something that the previous administration, which Basiru defiantly stood by, failed grossly to achieve.

Although, Basiru may choose to fight this truth as usual, however, the people who uses most of these infrastructures can attest to their existence and the impacts they have on them. And this is more reason why Basiru will find himself alone in this narrow politics because Osogbo people, and indeed, the entire Osun people will not allow one man’s insatiable lust for power to disrupt the wheel of progress for the state under Governor Adeleke.

In all of these, one truth about Basiru can no longer be hidden and that is his flawed sense of fairness and equity. In the piece promoting his suitability for the Osun governorship seat, there was a clear disdain for the people of Osun West as they were totally ignored in Basiru’s political permutation. Almost everyone in Osun, except for Basiru, recognises the gross injustice that Osun West had suffered in the past, and believes it should be given the opportunity to administer the state as other zones had done.

That is fairness and equity, which is the foundation of progress and development in any society. But that doesn’t seem to be the interest of Basiru, because the clear inference in the piece projecting his aspiration appears not to see Osun West as deserving of fairness and equity. So bad and what that tells us about Basiru is unpleasant, something I am sure will hurt Osun, rather than benefit. In short, it is not a route anyone who wants the best for Osun will want to tread.

Osun govt formerly hands over Oba Hills Forest Reserve to Nigerian govt

Governor Ademola Adeleke has said the exposure to danger of some species of diverse plants and animals due to activities such as logging, hunting, and other human factors spurred it to reconsider inviting the Federal Government to take over the Oba Hills Forest Reserve in Iwo local government.

Governor Adeleke also revealed that the predicament formed part of the reason that the Osun State Government engaged the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, NCF, in April 2013 to conduct a comprehensive survey of the reserve.

The findings revealed a high degree of degradation, which he said called for urgent intervention.

Adeleke made this known on Tuesday at the handing over of Oba Hills Forest Reserve to the Federal Government at the State Secretariat, Abere.

He said, “In response, Osun State reached out to the National Park Service to propose the reserve’s upgrade to National Park status. In 2021, this request was granted. Today, we witnessed the realization of that effort.”

The governor revealed that the reserve which will be known as Oba Hills National Park spans 4,225 hectares across the Iwo, Ejigbo, and Ola-Oluwa local government areas.

Adeleke expressed gratitude to the Conservator-General and the entire National Park Service for their total commitment to facilitating the handover process, stressing that the state remained interested in the operations of the park.

“As we transfer the management of Oba Hills Forest Reserve to the National Park Service, I must stress that Osun State remains deeply interested in the operations of the park. Today’s event aligns with our broader climate change agenda, as we recognize the critical role of the ecosystem in reducing global warming and ensuring sustainable development.

“I also urge the National Park Service to prioritise the recruitment of qualified indigenes of Osun State as officers and men to operate the park. Local content is a state policy here in Osun State.

The policy strengthens benefits for local communities and facilitates local ownership. We seek enforcement of that policy in the operations of the park.

“On this note, I officially hand over the Oba Hills Forest Reserve to the Honourable Minister of Environment for its transformation into a National Park, under the stewardship of the National Park Service.”

Speaking on behalf of the Minster for Environment, Bakare Abbas Lawal, the Conservator General of the National Park Service, Dr Ibrahim Musa Goni said the upgrade of the Oba Hills National Park by the Federal Government will make it an ecotourism hotspot, attracting visitors from far and wide.

Lawal also disclosed that it will contribute to the local economy and the country’s GDP.

“This presents an excellent opportunity to showcase the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the Nigerian landscape while generating economic opportunities for local communities. The potential for sustainable job creation, increased revenue, and community development should not be underestimated.”

The Minister while revealing that the journey towards upgrading the Reserve to a National Park began in 2012 when the Osun State government expressed interest in the transition, added that in November 2020, former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari approved the upgrade of Ten Forest and Game Reserves to National Parks, including Oba Hill.

He said the action by the Buhari administration increased the total number of National Parks in Nigeria to seventeen.

“This establishment aligns with our country’s efforts to meet global biodiversity conservation targets outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and to enhance internal security. The ten (10) new National Parks are as follows:

“Oba Hills National Park in Osun State, which is being handed over today, Hadejia Wetland National Park in Jigawa State (taken over 10th September 2024 from the Jigawa State Government), Allawa National Park in Niger State, Apoi National Park in Bayelsa State, Edumanom National Park in Bayelsa State, Falgore National Park in Kano State.

“Kogo National Park in Katsina State, Kampe National Park in Kwara State, Marhai National Park in Nasarawa State, Pandam National Park in Plateau State.”

The Minister said steps have been taken to ensure smooth management of the National park which includes; “Part of these efforts involves engaging with key stakeholders at local and international levels.

”We are also collaborating with the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and other security agencies to enhance the capacity of Rangers and Forest and Game Guards through training, the provision of additional arms and ammunition, and the acquisition of technology-based patrol equipment. These initiatives aim to strengthen security within and around our forest areas.

“In an effort to kick off effectively, the National Park Service has appointed Assistant Conservator of Parks, Azeez Kazeem Olakunle as Ag. Conservator of Parks to oversee the day-to-day affairs of the Park pending the appointment of a substantive Conservator of Park. The Service has also procured the following items for the Park:

“Vehicle: Toyota Hilux 4WD, motorcycles, bicycles, arms and ammunition, office furniture and equipment: consisting of a desktop computer, laptop computer, printers, scanner, photocopier, office chairs, office table, and refrigerator, complete set of uniform and accoutrements, patrol equipment and amping Equipment.”

He said the service will absorb indigenes of the state who indicate interest in working with the federal government and tax will be remitted to the state government

2026 is our turn to produce Governor in Osun after 33 Years

-Prominent indigenes of the town (Oshogbo) had several opportunities in the past to become the governor of the state but such opportunities were deterred by some people – Oladimeji

    Flowerbudnews

Oshogbo:  Dr Yemi Oladimeji, a leader of Osogbo Progressive Union (OPU), Osogbo in Osun, has decried the inability of the town to produce a governor since the creation of the state 33 years ago.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that OPU is the umbrella body of all Osogbo indigenous groups.

Oladimeji, in a statement on Sunday in Osogbo, said that the attitude of “pull him down syndrome” by some indigenes of Osogbo was responsible for the inability of the town to produce a governor.

He charged the indigenes of Osogbo to work together and as a team to produce the next governor of the state in the 2026 election for the development of the town and the state.

Oladimeji noted that Osogbo parades quality, qualified, competent and very sound political leaders, urging all indigenes of Osogbo in various political parties to work for the interest of the town ahead of the next gubernatorial election.

He noted that prominent indigenes of the town had several opportunities in the past to become the governor of the state but such opportunities were deterred by some people.

“In the last 33 years that Osun State was created by the military administration of retired Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Ede in Osun West has produced the governor twice through late Sen. Isiaka Adetunji Adeleke (1992/1993), and his younger brother, who is the incumbent, Sen. Ademola Adeleke, from 2022 till date.

”Also, Osun Central has produced the governor thrice through Chief Abdulkareem Adebisi Akande from Ila-Orangun (1999-2003), Okuku through Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (2003-2010) and Iragbiji through Alhaji Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola, 2018-2022.

“Ilesa in Osun East produced the governor through Ogbeni Abdulrauf Adesoji Aregbesola (2010-2018).

“Our great leader and my big uncle, Sen. Olu Alabi, from Osogbo had a good chance to become the governor of Osun State when he came out to run for the exalted office in 1999 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“He fought tooth and nail to emerge the PDP governorship candidate but lost to Chief Bisi Akande of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) because some of our people in Osogbo worked against him.

“The history repeated itself in my own case too when I ran the primary for the Osun State governorship under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in 2007.

”I am bringing up this issue not because of my own interest but for us to learn from history and begin to make an amend so that we don’t fall into the same booby-trap when such an opportunity for Osogbo comes up again,” he said.

According to him, there is a lot to gain by working together to advance the course and interest of Osogbo.

Oladimeji, who is a member of the United States chapter of OPU, urged Osogbo indigenes in the diaspora to always work towards the development of the town and be willing to assist the less privileged.

“We should also love one another and support whoever God wants to use to represent Osogbo politically.

”I am now appealing to all of us to rally support for the development of Osogbo and Osun State.

”Let us show commitment to this course and make it a collective responsibility,” he said.

Osun: ICPC begins tracking of N10bn federal constituency projects

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced the tracking of more than N10 billion constituency projects executed by federal lawmakers in Osun.

The head of the ICPC team, Mrs Mary Oke, disclosed this on Saturday during the tracking of federal constituency projects in Osogbo, Ilobu, Kuta and Ede areas of the state.

Oke said that the tracking was part of the commission’s mandate to promote accountability and transparency in the implementation of public projects.

She said that the tracking would enable the commission to assess the status of various constituency and executive projects across the state.

Oke said that this was to ensure that public resources were judiciously utilised to deliver quality infrastructure and services to the citizens.

“We have commenced the phase seven of constituency and executive projects tracking exercise in Osun.

“ICPC will be tracking projects valued at N10,470,872,906.60 in Osun State.

“The tracking is to ensure that government-funded projects provide value for money and are executed according to specifications,” she said.

Oke called on relevant stakeholders to support the commission in its tracking exercise.

The team leader called on relevant stakeholders, including community leaders and civil society organisations, to support the exercise.

“They can do this by providing the commission with relevant information that can assist in achieving its set objectives,” she said.

  • Conduct integrity test on Olaiya Flyover — Group urges Osun govt

Conduct integrity test on Olaiya Flyover — Group urges Osun govt

Oshogbo:   A civil society organisation, the Centre for Social Justice and Public Protection (CSJPP), has called on the Osun State Government to conduct an integrity test on the Olaiya Flyover to ensure its safety and structural stability.

The group emphasised the importance of prioritising public safety and cautioned against allowing political considerations to influence the decision-making process regarding the bridge’s maintenance and use.

Speaking on the development in a statement signed by its coordinator, Akin Akanji, a copy of which was obtained by DAILY POST, CSJPP urged stakeholders to support the state government in carrying out due diligence on the bridge.

The statement read, “As a group that deals with public protection, it is our duty to make sure the state government rises to its responsibilities, among which includes the protection of lives and property.

“We have observed the claims and counterclaims by the two major political parties and some stakeholders concerning the Olaiya Bridge; we want everyone to come together to know the true state of this bridge.

“We want to urge the state government not to fall for political manipulation concerning this issue as this is something that affects the well-being of those the governor is governing over.

“Also, we want to appeal to the opposition and other stakeholders to allow the bridge to be subjected to an integrity test in order to determine the true position of the bridge.

“We must also not fail to tell the state government not to play cheap politics concerning the bridge. Experts should be invited to look into it, and necessary adjustments should be made as recommended.”

The group, which noted visible cracks on both sides of the bridge, raised further concerns about its structural integrity and insisted that the findings have amplified calls for an urgent evaluation of the flyover to prevent potential hazards.

The Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had recently directed the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to enforce a ban on heavy-duty trucks from accessing the flyover.

The directive was issued on October 23, 2024, citing technical reports and safety concerns that raised alarms about the structure’s condition.

The Olaiya Flyover was constructed during the tenure of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

Questions regarding its durability have surfaced in recent times, prompting calls for a thorough assessment.

The government’s decision aims to mitigate risks associated with potential structural failure and ensure the safety of residents and commuters who rely on the bridge daily.

Describing the decision as a preemptive step, Governor Adeleke directed the Ministry “to erect barricades across the bridge to allow only cars and buses to ply through the road.”

“As a step towards implementing the directive, the Governor also instructed the Ministry to issue a travel advisory with radio jingles to sensitise members of the public and the transport ecosystem,” the statement said.

The Osun State Government has assured the public that its decision to ban heavy-duty trucks from using the Olaiya Bridge is aimed at protecting public safety and preserving state assets.

This precautionary measure comes as the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure conducts a comprehensive review of the bridge’s technical condition.

The decision, however, has sparked criticism from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), which labelled it a politically motivated move.

The party alleged that the action was an attempt to undermine the achievements of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, who is now the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.
