    NYSC swears in 1,503 corps members in Enugu

    The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has sworn in 1,503 corps members of the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream one set, deployed to Enugu State for the one-year mandatory national service.

    The state Coordinator, NYSC, Mrs Christiana Salmwang, disclosed this on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu.

    Salmwang said that the corps members comprised 764 males and 739 females.

    She said that the corps members would undergo vocational and entrepreneurship training through the skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) which was recently revamped to align with the prevailing socio- economic realities.

    The coordinator thanked Gov. Peter Mbah for his keen interest in the overall revamping of facilities in the orientation camp, adding that the governor had commenced massive renovation of the camp.

    “The drilling of a second borehole which will greatly cushion the effect of water scarcity is ongoing. We have been assured that before long the orientation camp will be transformed into a modern camp,” she said.

    She appealed to the state governor for the construction of a parade ground within the camp, construction of access road to the camp as vehicles find it difficult to ascend the camp especially during the rainy season due to its deplorable state.

    Salmwang also appealed for the installation of solar panels within the camp so as to help in illuminating the camp at night as the issue if light has been a perennial problem in Awgu.

    According to her, the NYSC, Enugu needs operational vehicles in order to help the scheme to carry out effective inspection and monitoring of the corps members as many of them are posted to rural communities in the state.

    Meanwhile, governor Mbah, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidebere Onyia said that his administration had already connected the camp to the national grid which was energized but due to vandalism of the facilities by some miscreants, the light to the camp went off.

    He promised that his administration would as a matter of urgency meet with the authority in charge of power to fix and bring back light to the camp.

    According to him, the access road leading to the camp ground has been completed, the new overhead tanks, renovation of 13 hostel buildings and renovation of 79 toilets facilities for the corps members in the orientation camp.

    He urged the corps members to key into Enugu State Government’s transformative agenda of continuity, collaboration, transparency, accessibility and accountability.

    He advised them to build bridges across their cultural and religious backgrounds and live peacefully with their fellow compatriots while working with one purpose to uplift the present dwindling economy.

    Administering the oath of allegiance, the Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena urged the corps members to be obedient to rules, regulations, laws and the country.

    Ozoemena, who was represented by Justice A. O. Onovo, said that the oath taken by the corps members was biding, that any activity against it would be liable to criminal offence under Nigerian law. (Flowerbudnews)

    The State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Enugu state, Mrs Christiana Salmwang has emphasized the need for proper reception of Prospective Corps Members as they arrive the camp.

    Salmwang gave the charge during the first camp officials’ meeting for the 2024 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 orientation course at the NYSC orientation camp, Awgu, on Friday.

    She urged the camp officials to speak to the Prospective Corps Members with kindness, calmness and as well show them empathy while receiving them at the orientation camp.

    She stressed that all the rules guiding the orientation course must be adhered to.

     

    “All camp officials must be present on camp throughout the exercise, there should be no physical contact between officials and corps members, and any form of rancor should be avoided,” she added.

     

    Speaking on the dress code of corps members, the coordinator said that the NYSC management had frowned at the deteriorating standard of the dressing of corps members.

     

    She implored both NYSC staff and collaborating agencies to help ensure that the corps members are properly dressed at all times.

     

    She reiterated that the COVID-19 protocols of handwashing and the use of nose masks were going to be observed and the testing by the NCDC would be optional and not compulsory.

     

    Salmwang solicited the support of all camp officials to ensure a smooth and successful orientation exercise.

     

    Also speaking, Mrs Benedith Nwaokeke, the Camp Director for the 2024 Batch ‘A’ stream 1 orientation exercise, said that the management had made it mandatory for all officials to be present at the morning mediation and the NHIA lecture.

    She urged all the officials and corps members to always have their identity cards with them at all times, and be security conscious as well.

     

    The meeting had in attendance, the Heads of collaborating agencies, the Resident Officer, Heads of Assignment, and other camp officials. (Flowerbudnews)

    Enugu: The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons, South East Zone has sought for collaboration with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Enugu to control proliferation of light weapons.

    The Coordinator of the centre, Maj.- Gen. Okechukwu Ugo (Rtd) disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit to the State Coordinator, NYSC, Enugu State, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang on Thursday in Enugu.

    Ugo said that the Federal Government established the agency considering the high rate of the circulation of illicit arms in the country.


    He said that the Federal Government found it necessary to aid the military by applying nonkinetic methods of advocacy, mentoring, and caution to control insecurities in the country.

    The coordinator acknowledged the NYSC as a leading agency when it comes to dealing with the Youths.

    He added that there was need to partner with the scheme to help reach the youth, sensitise them, change their mindset, and help them switch to a positive way of life by becoming vanguards against the circulation of illicit arms.

    In response, the State Coordinator NYSC, Enugu State, Mrs. Christiana Salmwang said, “the initiative is a welcome development with illicit arms flying around the country, to prevent it from landing in the wrong hands, there is no better time to partner with us than now.”

    Salmwang said that NYSC had over the years partnered with different agencies and a partnership with the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons would be a good one.


    She advised the agency to write to the NYSC Director General for permission to sensitise corps members during the forthcoming orientation course.

    She assured Ugo that with the Director General’s approval the initiative would be incorporated into the orientation course timetable.

    Enugu:The Coordinator, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Enugu State, Mrs Christiana Salmwang, has canvassed for the safety and welfare of corps members in the state during the forthcoming re-run election.

    Salmwang made the appeal, on Tuesday in Enugu during the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) meeting for the forthcoming re-run election scheduled to be held Feb.3, 2024.

    She pleaded with the security agencies to give high priority to the security of corps members who would play critical roles during the re-run election as electoral officers.

     

    The state coordinator emphasised the importance of the welfare of corps members with regards to prompt payment of their election allowances so as to encourage and motivate them to put in their best and participate in future election assignments.

     

    The meeting was called to update participants of preparation for the court-ordered Federal and State constituency elections in Udenu/Igbo-Eze North Federal Constituency and Enugu South 1 State constituency elections as well as the strategy to make the election successful.

    The meeting, which was held at INEC headquarters in Enugu had in attendance the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, Heads of Security Agencies in the State, and other stakeholders. (Flowerbudnews)

    NYSC swears in 1,919 corps members for 2023 batch ‘C’ stream 2 in Enugu

     

    Enugu;  The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has sworn in 1,919 corps members of the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream two set, deployed to Enugu State for the one-year mandatory national service.

    The state Coordinator, NYSC, Barr. Gladys Adama, disclosed this on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu.

    Adama said that the corps members comprised 926 males and 993 females.

    She applauded Gov. Peter Mbah for the renovation of the orientation camp.

    “The government of Enugu State has commenced the renovation of the camp, all the toilets in the hostels have been changed.

    The coordinator called on governor Mbah’s attention to the road leading to the orientation camp as it needs urgent repair.

    Adama appealed to the state governor for the need to have a parade ground within the orientation camp premises, adding that having the parade ground within the camp would save the corps members and the officials the stress and time moving from the camp to the local government field to have their field event.

    She said that the skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development had been reviewed in order to equip corps members with the requisite skill to excel in the ever changing and competitive digital economic environment.

    In his welcome address, Mbah, represented by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Lloyd Ekweremadu,
    said that the youths would be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the tomorrow that his administration envisage.

    ” We also owe the youths of this nation, who have been entrusted into our care a duty to the skills required to grasp the emerging future and create opportunities for the genius in them to flourish,” he said.

    He said that his administration was aware of many challenges in the camp and in response to the passionate plea of the state coordinator had commenced a complete and holistic renovation of the orientation camp.

    Administering the oath of allegiance to the corps members, the Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, who was represented by Justice Anthony Onovo, urged the corps members to remain focused.

    Ozoemena advised the corps members to stay in Nigeria after their service year, as there were many good opportunities in the country.

    “I will advise you, there are many opportunities in this country, the country has invested a lot in you, after your service, stay here let us find solution of this country,” he advised. /Flowerbudnews

    Enugu:  The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has sworn in 1,544 corps members of the 2023 Batch ‘C’ Stream one set, deployed to Enugu State for the one-year mandatory national service.

    The state Coordinator, NYSC, Mrs. Gladys Adama, disclosed this on Tuesday during the swearing-in ceremony at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Awgu Local Government Area in Enugu State.

    Adama said that the corps members comprised 812 males and 732 females.

    She said that the skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development had been reviewed in order to equip corps members with the requisite skill to excel in the ever changing and competitive digital economic environment.

    She commended Gov. Peter Mbah for his magnanimous steps taken to revamp the orientation camp.

    According to her, the government of Enugu State has commenced the renovation of the camp, all the toilets in the hostels have been changed.

    “Most of the toilets and bathrooms have been tiled while painting and re-roofing of some buildings are ongoing,” she said.

    The coordinator called on governor Mbah’s attention to the road leading to the orientation camp as it needs urgent repair.

    “I wish to also remind your excellency that the road to the camp is in a deplorable state, movement in and out of the camp is becoming very challenging as vehicles find it difficult to ascend to the camp, please come to our aid,” she pleaded.

    In his welcome address, Mbah represented by the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Lloyd Ekweremadu urged the corps members to draw maximum benefits from the skill acquisition training in order to be equipped for self employment after service.

    He assured them that their welfare was already receiving priority by the state government, adding that the allowances of corps members were paid as at and when due.

    He urged the corps members to always obey camp rules and regulations so that they would have a peaceful and successful orientation course.

    The governor commended the state coordinator for her passion towards the development of NYSC in all ramifications.

    “It is her enthusiasm that has moved my government to sink a second borehole in order to provide adequate water supply in the camp,” Mbah said.

    Administering the oath of allegiance to the corps members earlier, the Enugu State Chief Judge, Justice Raymond Ozoemena, who was represented by Justice Anthony Onovo, said it was an oath to serve the country, which is by law mandatory.

    Ozoemena added that it was a legacy, which the country had left for its citizens to go to other parts of the country to see various parts that made up the country.

    “One thing is that the one year mandatory NYSC programme opens your minds to what the world is, to see what you are not used to see in your own environment.

    “It opens your minds to various things you m heay not have thought as people’s ways of life,” he said. (Flowerbudnews)

    Enugu:  The Director-General, National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yushau Ahmed, has urged the corps members’ employers to pay particular attention to Security of corps members posted to their organisations.

    Ahmed, represented by Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, NYSC acting Zonal Coordinator, South East gave the advice during the 2023 corps employers workshop on Thursday in Enugu with the theme “Enhancing the wellbeing of corps members for optimum productivity.”

    He said that the workshop was aimed at receiving feedback from strategic stakeholders on the strength, weakness and potentials of the scheme, as well as chart ways of strengthening its operations in the post jubilee era.

    “We are also expected to review ways of addressing the welfare needs of corps members in their places of primary assignment and deliberate on how to ensure safety of corps members in their places of assignments.


    “We are expected to look at the roles of the corps employers in community development service, skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development, security during service and Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers,” he said.

    The NYSC Enugu State Coordinator, Mrs Gladys Adama, said that the theme of this year’s workshop was more apt in the present situation, where Nigerians were faced with increased insecurity coupled with the dwindling resources to adequately take care of the ever expanding corps population.

    Adama added that security of corps members was an issue that must always be given adequate attention.

    She urged the employers not to apply for corps members if they could not provide accommodations for them or give them money in lieu of accommodations.


    During the business session, Mrs I Oladipo, Deputy Director Account, NYSC South East, presented a pepper on “The role of NYSC and corps employers in impacting the host community through community development service, health initiative for rural dwellers, skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development in the post jubilee era.”

    Oladipo said that community development service programme of the NYSC was one out of the four cardinal programs of the NYSC scheme in which corps members contribute positively to the development of their host community.

    She added that the NYSC skill acquisition and Entrepreneurship development project reached out to all Corps members mobilized for the one year mandatory service to the nation.

    She urged the employers to emphasis more on the welfare of the corps members as well as correct them when they go wrong.

    Meanwhile, Mrs Dimma Anyaocha, Assistant Director, Operations, NYSC, South East, in her presentation on “The role of corps employers in ensuring the welfare and security of Corps members” she said that the corps employers have a major role to play in the welfare and security of the past 50 years deserve to be celebrated.

    Anyaocha identified notable victories of the employers, adding that some of them had successfully retrained or employed corps members after their service year, some corps members, with the recommendation from the corps employers had won NYSC awards and even moved on to get jobs in other sectors among others.

    Some employers, who participated urged the NYSC to provide accommodations for the corps members in all the Local Government Areas.

    A warrant Officer, David Igbidi from Air Force Comprehensive School, Agbani, Enugu, said his school had adequate conducive accommodations for the corps members posted to the school.

    He requested for NYSC medical personnel to be posted to his school.

    Mr Johnson Ugochinyelu Akpugoeze High School, Akpugoeze, Enugu, said that most of the schools in Enugu did not have accommodations for their staff, therefore, the corps members would find it difficult to be given accommodation. (Flowerbudnews)

    Nsit Atai (Akwa Ibom):  The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has organised its first-ever cultural carnival in Akwa Ibom to promote national unity and its diverse cultures and traditions.

    The State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs Chinyere Ekwe, disclosed this on Saturday during the ceremony at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Vamp in Nsit Atai Local Government Area for the 2023 Batch ‘B’ stream II corps members.

    Ekwe said that the reason behind the carnival was to promote the oneness of Nigeria and bring the corps members together.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the colourful cultural carnival display by various platoons showcased multiple ethnic groups.

    The coordinator said that the NYSC carnival coincided with the host community’s festival day, adding that it would avail the corp members an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the cultures of their host communities.

    “NYSC scheme is a trailblazer in the promotion of the unity and integration of Nigeria and has been at the forefront of preserving our rich cultural heritage.

    “Hence the introduction of the cultural carnival in the orientation course.

    “Today’s event is also embellished with the Local Government Day Festival for the host communities to showcase their cultures.

    “A clear understanding of the culture and traditions of the host communities where the corps members will be posted to serve is very important in ensuring a successful year.

    “It is meant to remove prejudice, eliminate ignorance, and confirm at first hand the many similarities among Nigerians of all ethnic groups.

    “My dear corps members, I wish to inform you that though our tradition may vary from one ethnic group to another, the operational norms and cultures are similar all over the state,” Ekwe said.

    In her remarks, the Nsit Atai Local Government Council Chairman, Ms Emem Ibanga, commended NYSC for commencing the cultural carnival during the orientation course.
