Edo election: Observer groups raise concern over transparency of collation process

    Flowerbud News

Civil Society Organizations on Sunday in Benin raised concern over the transparency of the ongoing results collation for the Edo governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

A joint statement by six civil society groups urged the security agencies to allow the media and observers full access to collation centres for transparency.

The statement was jointly signed by Nigerian Civil Society Situation Room, Yiaga Africa, Kimpact Development Initiative, Nigerian Women Trust Fund, ElectHER and TAF Africa .

“We, the undersigned accredited civil society organizations, express concern over the transparency of the ongoing results collation for the 2024 Edo governorship election by INEC.

“Reports of disruptions at collation centers, including intimidation of INEC officials and attempts to collate results against electoral provisions, have raised credibility concerns about the process.

“INEC’s statement acknowledging reports of result mutilation and its commitment to investigate any proven violations is a step in the right direction but needs prompt action.

“We urge INEC to invoke Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022 to review declarations where results were not voluntarily declared or violated electoral provisions.

“Security agencies must ensure non-interference in the collation process, allowing party agents, the media, and observers full access to maintain transparency and uphold electoral integrity, ” the statement said.

According to them, we emphasise the role of security agencies in safeguarding the election process, rather than undermining it, to preserve the credibility of the election outcome.

EDO: DISREGARD FAKE ELECTION FIGURES/ RESULT IN CIRCULATION – COLLATION ACTIVELY IN PROGRESS – APC

    By Biola Lawal
Abuja (Flowerbudnews): The All Progressive Congress (APC) has urged Nigerians, especially citizens in Edo state to disregard alleged fake election figures/result in circulation, says collation is actively in progress.

The call was made in a statement by Felix Morka, APC”s National Publicity Secretary
All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday.

    Morka wrote:

The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to some reports circulating in sections of social media by certain political parties peddling bogus figures of vote tallies in the ongoing Edo State Gubernatorial Election.

We urge the Edo state electorate and the general public to disregard these bogus and highly speculative reports.

Our great Party wishes to clarify that collation at the Ward level is still ongoing and has yet to be concluded. Certainly, Local Government level collation has yet to begin in most of the LGAs in the state let alone concluded.

Consistent with the Electoral Act, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the sole authorized body empowered to collate results at the Ward, Local Government and State levels, and to officially declare the result of the Election.

Our great Party is comfortably in an early lead, however, as a responsible Party, we will not attempt to preempt INEC’s conclusion of the election process and official declaration of final results.

We urge members of the public to disregard this attempted misrepresentation and await INEC’s final verdict on the election. (Flowerbudnews)

    Flowerbud News

Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, has mobilised 50 medical personnel to provide medical support services to victims of the flood disaster in Maiduguri, Borno.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that flood submerged Maiduguri on Sept. 10, following the collapsed of spillways at the Alau  dam.

The ravaging floods submerged residential quarters and farmlands, cut off roads and displaced thousands households in the ancient city.

Tinubu stated this during a sympathy visit to Gov. Babagana Zulum, on Friday in Maiduguri.

He said that 50 medical personnel drawn from the North-East states had been deployed to assist the overstretched medical team in the state.

“They are already on ground, and they will remain with you for the next few days to help stabilise the situation”.

Tinubu said the team in collaboration with the Noella Foundation donated medical supplies, food and non food items to cater for 50,000 children and adults affected by the disaster.

“This is just the beginning Your Excellency. I want to assure you that more help is on its way.

“As we speak, we are still mobilising additional resources to support the recovery until every displaced person in the state has been given the opportunity to start their lives,” he said.

He said the gesture was in response to President Tinubu’s call to  support the victims, and lauded the resilience of the people and the leadership being provided by the governor in addressing the challenges.

Responding, Zulum, who appreciated the show of love and support from Tinubu and his associates, assured of judicious utilisation of the support for maximum impact on the beneficiaries.

He also commended the president and the First Lady Remi Tinubu, for their support to the victims of the flood disaster.

“We remain grateful to the President and First Lady for their show of concern and support.

“Tell the President that the people of Borno highly appreciate him and are 100 per cent with him, ” Zulum said.

Katsina PDP suspends party’s ex-National Secretary, Tsauri

    Flowerbud News

The Tsauri ‘A’ Ward Executive Committee of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has announced the suspension of the former National Secretary of party, Sen. Umar Tsauri.

The position of the committee was announced in a suspension letter signed by the Ward Chairman, Alhaji Danjume Abubakar.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a copy of the letter, which was addressed to Tsauri, was issued to journalists in Katsina on Sunday.

According to the ward executive committee, the decision was taken at the committee’s sitting of Sept. 14, pending the outcome of the disciplinary committee set-up to investigate him on a series of allegations.

Tsuari was accused of anti-party activities, unguarded utterances against the national leadership of the party, actions and associations capable of embarrassing and bringing the party to disrepute.

According to the them, the suspension is in line with provision of article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution which empowers ward party executives to take disciplinary action against erring members.

The committee further said: “We urge all members of our great party to remain committed to the principles of party’s discipline and loyalty.

“We must work together to build a strong and united party capable of winning elections and serving the interest of our people.”

Reacting to the suspension, the spokesman of the party in the state, Alhaji Lawal Audi-Yar’adua acknowledged the receipt of the suspension letter from the senator’s ward.

He disclosed that the party had set-up a committee to investigate the allegations levelled against the senator, saying that no matter the status of any member, the party would abide by the provisions of the constitution in dealing with its members.

Responding to his suspension, Tsauri said that the ward and state chapter of the party lack constitutional powers to suspend him as a former National Secretary, without following due process.

According to him, “I was not issued with any suspension letter, I only saw it going round on social media written to the party Chairman, Kurfi Local Government.

He explained that the party has its rules and regulations, “and before action is taken against any member, certain processes have to be followed.”

NAN recalls that PDP in Katsina State is devided into two factions, with one led by Tsauri and Dr Mustapha Inuwa, the former Atiku Abubakar’s Presidential Campaign Director.

While the other faction is being led by Sen. Lado Danmarke, the PDP gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Kebbi legislature launches public hearing to amend LG law

    Flowerbud News

The Kebbi House of Assembly, on Wednesday, commenced public hearing on the Bill for a law to amend the Local Government Law, 2008 and for other matters connected therein.

The News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on Tuesday, four executive bills scaled second reading in the house.

The bills are, the Kebbi State Local Government (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission (Establishment) Bill, 2024, Kebbi State Transport Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Kebbi State Electricity Bill, 2024.

Declaring the hearing open on the bill to amend LG law, the Speaker of the house, Alhaji Muhammad Usman, said the hearing marked a significant moment in their collective efforts to strengthen local governance.
This, he said, would ensure that the foundational institutions of democracy in the state remained responsive, accountable, and effective.
“It is for this reason that we gathered here today to ensure that the laws guiding the operations of our local governments are in alignment with the current realities and needs of the people,” he said.
Usman recalled that since the passage of the local government law in 2008, the state has witnessed numerous changes politically, socially, and economically.
He added that the changes necessitated a thorough review of existing law to ensure that it remained a living document capable of addressing both present and future challenges.
“The bill seeks to enhance the capacity of local government to deliver better services, improve their financial autonomy, tenure of office and promote transparency and accountability in their operations,” the speaker explained.
On his part, the Chairman, House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Salihu Muhammad, assured that the bill would get accelerated passage that would make it possible for incoming LG Chairmen and Councilors to enjoy three-year tenure elongation instead of two years.
In his submission, the Chairman, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad, described the imposed mandatory payment of the non-refundable fees by the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KESIEC) as not only highly exorbitant but unwarranted.
He said the fees contravened the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).
The fees, according to him, violated the principles of democracy and social justice, adding that it had also constituted a friction for political parties and their candidates to participate in the upcoming LG polls in the state.
”Similarly, section 43 of the Local Government Law, 2008 provides for LG Election Tribunal. This law fails to make provision for appeal to the Federal Court of Appeal, hence, it should be amended,” he advised.
