  • Goodwill Medical Centre: Transforming Community Service*

    *By Paul Ejime*

After its commissioning on 23rd November 2023 by its chief benefactor, General TY Danjuma, the *Goodwill Medical Centre (GMC), Enugu,* is transforming lives in its host poor and under-served communities.

The Centre has just completed an iron metal bridge across a river to link at least three urban slums to essential services in the Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, eastern Nigeria.

The multi-million Naira *Avah River Bridge,* a wholly private initiative, will be opened during an official ceremony on Tuesday, 8th April 2025.

For decades, Umuchigbo, the GMC host community and the adjoining Ifoh community, Ugboezechi, Ugbo Laz and Ugbo Paul slum settlements had endured restricted access to healthcare and other essential services due to the Avah River, which constituted a major barrier to transportation in the area.

The not-for-profit and self-sustaining GMC opened its doors to the public on 1st February 2024, and consistent with its mission statement, the Centre has continued to undertake high-impact initiatives to help transform the lives of the poor in the surrounding urban slums.

Until the construction of the bridge, crossing the Avah river, a short distance between the GMC and the communities, was a nightmare to residents, who complained desperately about risking their lives and the high cost of transportation using the longer alternative routes.

Many residents who could not afford the high transportation costs were forced to wade through the river on perilous journeys to eke out a living.

Some residents have drowned during the process of crossing the river, and a father narrated the tragic deaths of two children within 10 days because his family could not afford the cost of transporting them to a medical facility in time.

The avoidable tragedies and the communities’ clarion call for help, moved the GMC Management to approach friends and public-spirited individuals to raise funds to construct the Avah River bridge for pedestrians, motorbikes and (Keke) tricycle users.

As they anxiously await the formal opening of the bridge, residents of the communities are expressing their heartfelt relief and celebrating in advance.

Apart from improving general access and easing the means of transportation for the residents, the bridge case will also reduce fatalities and case complications due to avoidable delays.

Also, in collaboration with the TY Danjuma Foundation (TYDF), GMC Management has completed a water harvesting and purification project by utilising water from the Avah River.

According to the Centre’s first Impact Assessment Report, the access barrier before the construction of the bridge had driven some women in the communities to rely on traditional birth attendants (TBAs), leading to maternal and infant deaths.

The GMC has trained and empowered 21 TBAs, and in collaboration with the Enugu State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ES-PHCDA), carried out a geo-spatial mapping project of all TBAs across five nearby communities.

Recognising their importance to primary healthcare, the training and retraining of TBAs are programmed three times a year to enhance their skills and knowledge and ensure early referral of complex maternal and newborn cases to the Centre.

Data collection and training have already started as pivotal steps towards reducing maternal mortality and improving delivery outcomes. The GMC has also reported a rise in deliveries, including several sets of triplets.

Furthermore, the GMC runs eye health clinics by ophthalmologists and optometrists on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, while cataract surgeries are performed three times a month at the Centre. After 20 initial cataract surgeries sponsored by the TYDF, the GMC Cataract Surgery Unit is successfully running its eye health programme, contributing to restoring sight and improving the quality of life for many in the community.

Abuja, April 5, 2025 (FBN) Dr Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has inaugurated Phase I of Kugbo International Market to boost local and national economies.

Mahmoud said during the event in Abuja on Saturday that the market would promote trade and commerce, ultimately boosting both local and national economies.

She said that the market, constructed by the Abuja Investment Company Limited, (AICL) had more than 1,600 shops and business spaces in Phase I.

She added that the shops and business spaces ranged from lock-up shops to terrace shops and warehouses.

“The infrastructure in the market was designed with both convenience and sustainability, incorporating modern amenities such as administrative block, clinic, fire station, restaurants, banking halls and modern convenience,” she said.

She said that the market would equally generate revenue for the FCT Administration, through taxes, levies, and other charges.

This, she said, was in addition to providing job opportunities for a wide range of people in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

She emphasised that the project marked a significant milestone in the commitment to economic growth, infrastructure development, and sustainable investment in the Federal Capital Territory.

“The Kugbo international market is a testament to what can be achieved when public and private sectors collaborate with purpose.

“It is more than a trading hub. It is a thriving ecosystem designed to support businesses, empower entrepreneurs, create jobs, and attract both local and international investors.

“It is our hope that this market will become a vibrant centre of commerce, where ideas are exchanged, cultures are celebrated, and livelihoods are uplifted,” she said.

Mahmoud commended the management of the AICL for its unwavering dedication to driving economic development through impactful investments.

She encouraged all stakeholders — traders, service providers, investors, and consumers to take full advantage of the opportunities the market presents.

Earlier, the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer AICL, Amb. Maureen Tamuno, explained that the market was developed through Mesotho Group Ltd, under a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) arrangement.

Tamuno identified Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as the backbone of any prosperous economy, adding that they created jobs that drove sustainable economic growth.

She, however, acknowledged the challenges affecting entrepreneurs, ranging from  inadequate access to capital  to affordable business spaces.

She assured business men and women of FCT Administration’s support in addressing the problem of unavailability of business spaces.

The managing director said that the shops would be given to hardworking traders from all the six area councils of the FCT.

“These shops are more than just a business’ physical space;  they symbolise renewed hope and economic independence for all the beneficiaries.”

*Nigerian Oil Industry: Will a New Board Block the Corruption Cesspool

    *By Paul Ejime

Ordinarily, President Bola Tinubu’s reconstitution of the governing board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited should inspire hope for positive changes in the country’s beleaguered petroleum sector, but for critics and many Nigerians, it is a wait-and-see response.

An official government statement on 2nd April 2025, said the move was crucial for “enhancing operational efficiency, restoring investor confidence, boosting local content, driving economic growth, and advancing gas commercialization and diversification.”

The new 11-member board has Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO).
He replaces Mele Kolo Kyari, who held the position from 2019. Kyari had earlier served as the Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division of the NNPC and Nigeria’s Representative at the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) from 2018.

Ahmadu Musa Kida, the new non-executive Chairman of the NNPCL board, takes over from Chief Pius Akinyelure. All other board members appointed with Akinyelure and Kyari in November 2023 were also removed.

Six board members, non-executive directors, represent Nigeria’s geopolitical zones. Mrs Lydia Shehu Jafiya, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, represents the ministry on the new board, and Aminu Said Ahmed, represents the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

President Tinubu, who, like his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari (2016-2023), doubles as Petroleum Minister, charged the new board to conduct a strategic review of NNPC-operated and Joint Venture Assets to ensure alignment with value maximization objectives.

As part of the Tinubu administration’s oil sector reforms to attract investment, the NNPCL last year reported US$17 billion in new investments within the sector.

According to industry sources and government officials, Tinubu’s government plans to increase the investment to US$30 billion by 2027 and US$60 billion by 2030.
While non-oil sector is considered a pathway to Nigeria’s sustainable economic growth, diversification remains an unending quest.

Oil accounts for 80 percent of Nigeria’s revenue and foreign exchange earnings, and data from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), showed that the country’s crude oil revenue surged to ₦50.88 trillion in 2024, with total crude oil production of 408,680,457 barrels throughout the year. (about N1,500=1US$).

However, until recently and for decades, Nigeria imported refined petroleum products, including the Premium Motor Spirit or petrol, and endured embarrassing national shortages blamed on mismanagement and lack of transparency in the industry.

Four of the country’s state-run oil refineries were dormant for several years, while millions of Naira was spent as running costs on them, including staff emoluments. Two of the four refineries only reportedly resumed production recently.

Consequently, Nigeria has continued to produce crude oil below the quota allocated to it by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and even the coming on stream of a few private refineries, particularly the Dangote Refinery, owned by Africa’s richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote has ended the country’s oil industry misery.

Since its inauguration in May 2023, the Tinubu administration has raised the pump price of petrol several times, adding to the hardship associated with the economic policies, which the government considers critical to stimulating economic growth and national prosperity.

A six-month sale of crude oil by the NNPCL to private refineries in local currency, Naira, another government stop-gap measure to shore up fuel supply has ended with consumers expressing anxiety about another potential bout of price rises.

Like most government institutions and agencies, the NNPCL faces a trust deficit because of the opaqueness and phantom dealings in the petroleum industry, with critics claiming that the true position of the country’s oil production and general transactions is a mystery.

To compound matters, the NNPCL admitted in its audited financial statement last August that it was struggling to pay off a US$6 billion debt.

The new NNPCL Chairman, Kida, and GCEO Ojulari, bring to their new roles impressive career track records and vast experiences in the petroleum industry.

But it remains to be seen if these are enough to bring the desired changes, including burnishing the profile of the Corporation and transforming Nigeria’s struggling petroleum industry.

Some conspiracy theorists are even reading a curious coincidence into the new NNPCL leadership, pointing out that both men have separately worked with French companies TOTAL and Elf Aquitaine, and a day after their appointment, Nigeria’s President Tinubu jetted out to France on a working visit.

Apart from his oil industry career, Kida was a basketballer and former President of the Nigerian Basketball Federation, while Ojulari also served in a senior position at Shell, a British affiliated oil giant.

As a critical stakeholder in Nigeria’s major revenue-spinning industry, the NNPCL also provides the oil that powers the country’s political engine, including elections, and will continue to draw public attention.

The Kida-led new board has its job cut out for it, either to do business differently and inspire public confidence, or join the list of previous executives that failed to meet the expectations of Nigerians who feel short-changed by the country’s failure to optimize the benefits of its God-given oil resources because of corruption and mismanagement.

Shi’ites threaten to sue FG, Nigerian Army over alleged continued detention of over 60 minors, others

    By Flowerbudnews

The Shi’ites have threatened to sue the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army if their members, including no fewer than 60 minors, allegedly arrested and detained are not released.

A team of lawyers, led by Barrister Bala Dakum, including Barrister Yushau Uthman, made this known during a press briefing on Friday over the recent alleged attack on their members in Abuja.

It would be recalled that on March 28, 2025, members of the Islamic group while on peaceful procession to mark the International Quds Day, allegedly came under attack by the officers of the Nigerian Army.

Reacting at the briefing, Dakum alleged that about 26 persons were allegedly shot dead during the incident by the security officers.

“We are compelled to address you this evening due to the recent avoidable but unfortunate brutal attack on our clients (the Shiites Muslim faithfuls).

“Our clients came out on 28th March, 2025 to commemorate their annual international Quds day like their counterparts across the globe.

“While peacefully carrying out their procession in Banex Area, Wuse Il, Abuja in their thousands, they unexpectedly and surprisingly came across group of armed soldiers who without any provocation started firing live ammunitions at them.

“In the cause of this inhumane, callous, cruel, barbaric and most horrific attack on our clients, about 26 persons lost their lives, over 30 persons sustained various degrees of life threatening injuries and about 274 were arrested by the soldiers.

“Our clients were later handed over to the Nigeria Police Force who took them to the now defunct infamous SARS in Abattoir, Garki, Abuja where they were detained under very harsh and dehumanising condition.

“Even in their debilitating and terrible conditions, they were coerced into writing or signing statements at the police cell in the absence of their lawyers contrary to the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

“Among the persons arrested and detained were over 60 minors who have been kept in the same cell with persons suspected to have been involved in heinous crimes contrary to all norms, values provisions of ACJA 2015 and Child Rights Act,” he said.

The lawyer also said that despite several appeals, the police is yet to release corpses of persons who were brutally killed by the soldiers.

“The corpses are now deposited in secret hospitals which is against Islamic rites that provides for prompt and immediate burial of deceased persons.

“This, we must say is strange knowing that the dead bodies cannot be investigated or tried,” he said.

According to him, the public will recall that this is one of the countless attacks on our clients which is gradually becoming the norm among the security agencies.

“It is pertinent to note that on all occasions when our clients carried out their processions in Abuja or any part of this country without the involvement of the security agencies, it has always been peaceful.

“Even on the said 28th Day of March, 2025 when our clients were killed here in Abuja, all other procession across the country were peaceful.

“The world must know that our clients in Nigeria have being under attack for over 11 years.

“It suffices to submit that there is a grand plan by the Nigerian government to permanently deprive our clients of their rights to freedom of worship, association and expression which are all guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution and the international charter on human and people’s rights,” he alleged.

Dakum while fielding questions therefore said that if their demand on the release of their members, including the minors, is not met, they would explore the legal means to get them released.

“This is the only option we can use, we cannot use force. We have to use the legal way by going to court.

“But we pray that while counsel prevail they would release them within the shortest time, particularly those that are injured and the children among them, in as much as we want all of the released,” he said.

Also speaking on the members who have lost their lives and are allegedly being kept in hospitals, the lawyer said they will equally challenge this in court if the security agencies refused to release the corpses for burial in accordance with the Islamic rites.

“Like in the past when our clients were killed, what we normally do is to approach the court when we apply to the police for the release of these corpses and they refused to comply.

“We have done that severally and the court, in its wisdom, always grant us judgment.

“So we will equally go the same way if they refuse to do it because they deserve immediate burial.

“These people cannot be tried as we said and they cannot be investigated so why keep their corpses?

“They are Muslims which everybody knows they were not even supposed to be kept; they were supposed to be buried immediately,” he said.

According to him, we know it is a deliberate way to psychologically punish our clients again by the security agencies.
