BREAKING: Rivers chief magistrate resigns over emergency rule

    Flowerbudnews

A Chief Magistrate in Rivers State, Ejike King George, has voluntarily resigned his position as a Magistrate in the Rivers State Judiciary.

Chief Magistrate George’s resignation was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Chief Judge of Rivers State, through the Secretary of the Rivers State Judicial Service Commission.

In the letter, George described his decision as “difficult and regrettable”, attributing it to his discomfort with the recent appointment of a “quasi-military administration” to oversee the affairs of Rivers State.

He noted that the current system of governance is not only unfamiliar but fundamentally contradicts the ideals and values of the legal profession.

According to him, such a structure runs counter to the principles upheld by legal practitioners and adjudicators.

George further stated that having dedicated 16 out of his 22 years of legal practice to serving as a magistrate under successive democratic administrations, he finds it challenging to operate within the current political context.

Doing so, he said, would amount to “tacit and naive acquiescence”.

He expressed appreciation to the Chief Judge for the opportunity to serve in the state’s judiciary.

The statement read, “This letter is intended to convey my decision to voluntarily retire my appointment as Magistrate of the Judiciary of Rivers State.

“This difficult and regrettable decision is informed largely by my discomfort with the recent appointment of a quasi-military administration to run the affairs of a modern State like ours.

“My Lord will agree with me that this type of governance system is not only alien but also runs antithetical to our hallowed profession as legal practitioners and adjudicators.

“Having put in a whooping 16 (sixteen) out of my 22 (twenty two) years of legal practice into this Judiciary as Magistrate under successive democratic administrations, I find it difficult to work with the current setting, as doing so would amount to a tacit and naïve acquiescence.

“Thanks My Lord, for the opportunity to serve.”

JP Morgan’s decision to open a full branch in Nigeria, global endorsement of President Tinubu’s economic reforms -TSF

    By Danladi Ahmed

FLOWERBUDNEWS:  The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) has welcomed plans by American banking giant JP Morgan to upgrade its Nigeria representative office into a fully operational business branch.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group described it as a clear global endorsement of the far-reaching economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu.

The statement read in part: “According to a recent report by Africa Intelligence, the move is in line with the strategic vision of JP Morgan’s Chief Executive Officer, Jamie Dimon, to deepen the bank’s footprint in Africa, particularly in thriving economies like Nigeria.

“The development is a strong vote of confidence on the Nigerian economy and the robust reform agenda of the Tinubu administration, especially in the areas of monetary policy, ease of doing business, and financial market liberalization.

“JP Morgan’s decision to apply for a merchant banking licence from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s financial sector. It positions the country to benefit from global capital flows, attract more institutional investments, and facilitate improved access to foreign exchange loans and sophisticated asset management services for Nigerian corporate citizens.

“As one of the world’s most influential financial institutions, JP Morgan’s expansion into full business operations in Nigeria sends a powerful signal to other global investors that Nigeria is open for business.

“For us, the operational upgrade will not only strengthen the financial services ecosystem, but will also create job opportunities, increase the CBN’s non-oil revenue through licensing and regulatory fees, and drive down the cost of foreign currency-denominated funding for local businesses.

“It is noteworthy that Mr. Dimon, during his visit to Nigeria last October, acknowledged the missed opportunities to expand in Africa due to previous regulatory constraints in the United States, but now sees the continent—and Nigeria in particular—as critical to the future of global finance.

“We at TSF believe that this milestone is the outcome of President Tinubu’s bold leadership and deliberate policies to stabilize the economy, attract foreign direct investment, and reposition Nigeria as the financial hub of Africa.

The group also expressed confidence that the development will catalyze similar decisions by other global financial and investment institutions, leading to a virtuous cycle of economic growth and renewed investor confidence in Nigeria.

  • PRESIDENCY DISCLAIMS 2027 CAMPAIGN BILLBOARDS NATIONWIDE

PRESIDENCY DISCLAIMS 2027 CAMPAIGN BILLBOARDS NATIONWIDE

    By Iyiola Olalere

FLOWERBUDNEWS:  The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Worth noting is that some of these billboards with pictures of the President and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, emblazoned on them are springing up in Abuja and Kano in particular.

This was disclosed in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy.

While President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima greatly appreciate their teeming and loyal supporters across the country for their enthusiasm and continuing support, the two leaders do not support any campaign that breaches the laws of the land.

The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections. Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages. As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process.

Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel—be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television.

Therefore, we urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately.

President Tinubu and his deputy are fully committed to delivering the ongoing task of nation-building they have set for themselves.

This commitment is evident in their focus on economic revitalisation, human capital development, infrastructural renewal, social investment, and national security.

When INEC signals that the processes for the 2027 elections can start, President Tinubu will duly inform Nigerians of his plans.

  • Boko Haram: Zulum blasts Tinubu’s minister of information, says he’s naive of what is happening in Nigeria

Boko Haram: Zulum blasts Tinubu’s minister of information, says he’s naive of what is happening in Nigeria

Governor Zulum of Borno State has criticised Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu accusing him of being “naive” about the country’s security situation.

The governor’s statement came on the heels of an attack on the Damboa-Maiduguri road on Saturday, where eight people were killed by an explosive device planted by Boko Haram insurgents.

Governor Zulum made this known shortly after the deadly incident that left seven others severely injured and 14 others with minor injuries.

The explosion, which occurred on a road connecting the state capital Maiduguri to Damboa, highlights the continuing security challenges faced by the state in the fight against Boko Haram.

In his response, Governor Zulum said, “I believe the Minister of Information is naive about what is happening in the country. He doesn’t know what is ongoing in the country.”

He expressed concerns over the Minister’s recent comments regarding the state’s security and called for better understanding of the situation on the ground.

Zulum noted the need for resilience from both the local communities and the Nigerian military in the face of such threats.

“I want to advise the communities to be resilient enough. I want to advise the Nigerian Army to be resilient enough because there’s no way people will travel a distance of 700 kilometers to go to Damboa. Ordinarily, they come here to Damboa, it’s only about 100 kilometers,” he said.

The Governor reiterated that the incident would not deter the state’s commitment to ensuring the safety of the route.

“We shall ensure that travel from Maiduguri to Damboa will continue. This will not deter us from following the road, artillery, and all other security agencies to give up security along the road so that such incidents will not happen again,” he added.

Governor Zulum also explained his discussions with top military officials in Abuja, including the Chief of Army Staff, the Naval Staff, and the Air Staff, where they assured him that the Nigerian military would continue to work tirelessly to address the insurgency.

“We are so happy with the response that we had from the service chiefs,” he said.
Despite the ongoing threats posed by Boko Haram, the Governor expressed confidence that Borno State would not regress to the level of insurgency it experienced in the past.

“I want to assure the people of Borno State that Insha Allah, under my watch, Boko Haram will not have the capacity to do what they did before,” he stated, stating his commitment to strengthening the state’s defences and bolstering local civilian efforts, such as the work of hunters and vigilantes.

The governor, however, promised to continue partnership with the federal government and the military, stressing that the security situation in Borno would be addressed thoroughly.

“I will keep up to the expectations of the people of Borno State by completely addressing the problem of insecurity,” he added.

Governor Zulum’s statement underline the tense security situation in Borno State, where Boko Haram insurgents continue to carry out attacks despite military efforts to quell their activities.

  • VHS alumni urge stronger support for education

VHS alumni urge stronger support for education

    By Taiye Olayemi

Victory High School (VHS) Ikeja Old Students’ Association, 1981 set, says quality education is crucial in alleviating poverty in Nigerian society.

The group urged all tiers of government to boost the education sector by increasing annual funding and reviewing the curriculum regularly.

Mr John Kayode, President of the group, stated this during the Annual General Meeting and New Year Get-Together held on Saturday in Lagos.

Kayode said: “Education plays a key role in reducing poverty and enhancing national development. Government must prioritise budgetary allocation to education.”

He added that UNESCO recommends allocating 4 to 6 per cent of a country’s GDP to education and Nigeria should adopt this benchmark.

“Between 10 and 20 per cent of the education budget should be channelled into teacher training, infrastructure, and educational equipment,” he said.

He further stated that the curriculum should be frequently reviewed by experts across sectors, focusing on 21st-century skills, especially technology.

“Well-paid, well-motivated and qualified personnel must be engaged at all levels—primary, secondary and tertiary,” Kayode stressed.

He also advocated for the implementation of genuine free education, including tuition and boarding, up to senior secondary school level nationwide.

Kayode acknowledged that the current Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme is commendable but insufficient, as it ends at junior secondary level.

He called for a holistic educational approach, urging collaboration between non-profits, corporations and religious bodies to support government efforts.

Such support, he said, should include scholarships, school meals, and other forms of assistance for students and schools.

He explained that collaboration would reduce Nigeria’s high number of out-of-school children, a longstanding challenge to the sector.

“Improving education also means ensuring security across schools nationwide,” he said.

Kayode urged community participation in school development, involving both local authorities and residents in the process.

He said communities must ensure children are in school during class hours, not roaming the streets.

“All of us must ensure our children, and those of our neighbours, receive an education. Education is not a scam,” he added.

Mr Taiwo Salami, Global President of the Alumni Association, urged members to uphold unity and advance the group’s mission.

He revealed plans to create a website for the group and renovate its global secretariat, which is in poor condition.

Chief Richard Ahonaruogho, Global Board Chairman and Patron, praised the 1981 set as “first among equals”.

He said they had shown great dedication and unity in the alumni community.

“You’ve set a high standard. The first to produce an OFR awardee and a governor. Truly admirable,” he stated.
