  • Yahaya Bello threatens to sue online media over alleged comment against Tinubu

Yahaya Bello threatens to sue online media over alleged comment against Tinubu

Former Gov. Yahaya Bello of Kogi has threatened to sue persons behind an online media, Daily Excessive, over alleged fake report targeted at causing a strained relationship between him and President Bola Tinubu.

The decision to sue the purveyors of the news was made known in a statement signed by Michael Ohiare, the Director, Yahaya Bello Media Office, and a copy made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday evening.

The online platform was alleged to have published a report quoting the former governor to have said, while in court, that he would reveal to the world how President Tinubu became Nigerian president.

Ohiare said the report was not only misleading, “but a confirmation of how unintelligent some unrelenting detractors of the former governor are.”
He said: “Our attention has been drawn to a not only mischievous but absolutely senseless report published by a mushroom blog called Daily Excessive, which attributed fake quotes against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to our principal, the immediate-past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.

“Ordinarily, we would not have even bothered to give this any attention, considering the fact that no informed Nigerian would take such a ridiculous story seriously, especially since court records are public documents.
“This clarification is, however, necessary for the record and for the benefit of social media users who circulate fake news without fact-checking the details.
“The report, which is part of the desperate plot by irresponsible politicians to strain the relationship between our President and former Governor Yahaya Bello is the most laughable twist in their failed bid to execute their bring-him-down-at-all-costs mirage.
“Every Nigerian, who has been following court proceedings, since the former governor submitted himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, knows that trial has not commenced in any of the cases.
“Former Governor Bello has only taken his plea at both courts.
“The court is an open place where proceedings are monitored by journalists and other stakeholders.
“This is the reason no informed Nigerian would even consider opening this report by an “Excessive fake news purveyor” called Daily Excessive.”
He described the persons behind the news as “mischief makers.”
“We, however, wish to stress here that even those that the hatchet job executors are trying to confuse know that His Excellency, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, has great respect for the person and office of Mr President and would never make such ridiculous remarks attributed to him against the President.

“Alhaji Yahaya Bello will continue to support the President and his party, the All Progressives Congress, despite the misleading picture his detractors are trying so hard to paint.
“We have alerted security agencies to unveil the identities of those behind the website that was used in circulating this fake report.
”We will ensure that the purveyors of the fake news face the legal consequences of their action,” Ohiare concluded.

  • Ghana 2024 Elections, ECOWAS and AES Juntas*

Ghana 2024 Elections, ECOWAS and AES Juntas*

    By Paul Ejime

Ghana has pulled off another feat in democratic consolidation after successfully conducting a ninth round of generally peaceful Presidential and Parliamentary Elections. While democratic elections have become a norm in the country, the 2024 General Elections were distinct in various aspects that challenged the resilience of democracy, yet, Ghanaians rose to the occasion

Forty-eight hours after the poll, the Electoral Commission (EC) announced processed results from 267 out of 276 constituencies, and declared former President John Dramani Mahama, candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the winner and President-elect with 56.55% of the votes against 40.61% scored by the out-going Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential fag-bearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Indeed, less than 24 hours from the close of balloting, Vice President Bawumia had telephoned President-elect Mahama to concede defeat.
Also, following the declaration of the official results by EC, out-going President Nana Akufo-Addo congratulated Mahama on “his decisive victory” and invited him to a meeting to initiate the transition process.

There was no rocket science to it, but a matter of political actors respecting the will of the people.

The two dominant political parties had agents in almost all the more than 40,000 polling stations, who monitored process and relayed polling results to their party data system for parallel vote collation/tabulation.

Like in most elections, the run-up to Ghana 2024 was not without political tension, misinformation, disinformation, fake news and hate speech, culminating in violent incidents in some Regions/Districts, with at least one or two reported deaths and injuries.

Even after the results of the presidential race were announced, shootings, looting and destruction of public and private properties were still reported in some volatile regions. Police reported some arrests and promised prosecution of culprits.

Similar post-election violence is not uncommon in Ghana, but it reached a crescendo in the 2020 elections when eight people were killed.

Some critics believe that the “unsatisfactory” handling of the 2020 election killings and the lack of public confidence in some public institutions, might have contributed to the government’s defeat at the poll.

The other factors include economic hardship, allegations of official corruption, nepotism and “political arrogance” exhibited by some public officials.

Also, artisanal illegal gold mining, locally called “galamsey,” and its negative environmental consequences (including degradation of water bodies and destruction of forest reserves) have become a major political issue, with the two major political parties trading allegations over complicity.

Equally concerning were the menace of violent extremism and vigilantism or the use of thugs/private security agents by politicians, despite the existence of the Anti-Vigilantism and Related Offences Act 999 of 1999.

The combined effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused severe economic disruptions across the globe, currency fluctuation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has impacted food security for many African countries, have left the Ghanaian economy reeling out of control amid high inflation and unemployment, especially among the youth. Also, the country’s debt crisis and engagement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for economic recovery might have played a significant role in the outcome of the elections.

Akufo-Addo and Mahama, who will become Ghana’s 13th President since the country’s independence from Britain in 1957, have now locked horns in four presidential battles with both emerging victorious on two occasions – (2012 and 2024 Mahama) and (2016 and 2020 Akufo-Addo).

The 2020 race produced a hung parliament with the two dominant parties having an equal number of MPs in parliament, and the opposition NDC producing the parliamentary Speaker for the first time in the country’s political history. The decision by four MPs to quit their parties and the Supreme Court’s order stopping the Speaker from declaring the MPs’ seats vacant had aggravated the political tension.
Ghana has 24 registered political parties.

Thirteen (13) fielded presidential candidates, while fifteen (15) had candidates for the parliamentary elections, complemented by independents. Nonetheless, the ruling NPP and the opposition NDC remain the dominant parties, alternating control of political power three times in 32 years (2000, 2008 and 2016) and now in 2024.

According to the EC, 900,000 new eligible voters were added to the national voter’s register in 2024 bringing the total to 18,774.159 (15% higher than in 2020), in an estimated national population of 34.42 million.

In a marked departure from tradition, the 2024 political campaigns were more of a door-to-door affair than public rallies. The NDC’s stronghold is the Volta Region and parts of the North and Muslim community, while the NPP draws its majority following from the Akan ethnic group, mainly from the Ashanti and other Southern Regions.

Religion is not overly contentious in Ghana, but the 2024 poll tested the country’s religious tolerance.

It was the first time in Ghana’s history that two candidates from the two major political parties, professing different faiths came from the same region, the North. Mahama is Christian and Bawumia a Muslim.

In the end, Mahama recorded a sweeping victory with a more than 1.5 million majority vote margin, the highest since 1992.

There is no perfect election. However, Ghana has demonstrated that an electoral process, which is a multi-stakeholder responsibility is integral to the entrenchment of democratic culture, nurtured by strong and resilient institutions.

As the icing on the cake, Ghana, for the first time, also has its first elected female Vice President, Prof Nana Opoku-Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate in the 2024 elections.

Local and international election observers, including from ECOWAS, the African Union and the Commonwealth, and civil society organisations, were unanimous in their positive assessment of the outcome of Ghana’s latest elections, the professionalism of most actors, and the transparency of the electoral process bar the isolated violent incidents, which they captured in their reports with recommendations particularly on collation and results management for the relevant authorities to address.

Incidentally, the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission to Ghana was led by Nigeria’s former Vice President Namadi Sambo, while the West African Elders’ Forum was headed by his boss, former President Goodluck Jonathan. The fact that President Jonathan, with Sambo as his deputy, also telephoned then-candidate Muhammadu Buhari to concede defeat in Nigeria’s 2015 presidential election, just as Bawumia has done in Ghana, was not lost on the international community.

By and large, after the successful and peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections in Senegal and Liberia, the outcome of Ghana’s elections is a strong message that democracy, with all its flaws, is the way to go, by providing the people with the mechanism to periodically change leaders who fail to deliver.

The conversation on the credibility or transparency of elections remains open-ended, but a flawed election is not enough reason to jettison democracy.

With the January 2025 deadline fast approaching on the notice issued by the junta leaders of the Alliance of Sahel States, AES, to pull their countries – Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger from ECOWAS, the message from Accra is that it is never too late for a patriotic leader to do the right thing in the interest of the people.

The citizens of AES countries are going through severe socioeconomic hardship, insecurity and political isolation, which could only worsen, with an avoidable humanitarian disaster if their countries should unceremoniously quit ECOWAS.

ECOWAS might have made some mistakes in its approach to halt the wave of military incursions into politics in West Africa, but that is no justification for military coups or unconstitutional change of governments.

Since their withdrawal announcement, the junta leaders have made little to no progress on constitutional rules or implementation of their transition programmes. They should not vindicate the notion that they are opportunistic power grabbers.

For their part, ECOWAS leaders must put their house in order at the national and regional levels by ending bad governance, corruption, human rights violations, election rigging as well as “constitutional and ballot box coups.”

    GEORGIA (ГРУЗИЯ) IN TURMOIL

An analysis – By Lawal Sale

As one of the prominent former Soviet Union Republic, Georgia, in the Caucasus is at crossroad.

If care is not taken, politicians in Europe are on the verge of turning Georgia into another Ukraine for the sole purpose of integrating it into the EU.

Georgia conducted a parliamentary elections on October 26 where the Georgian Dream Party won the people’s vote electing Irakli Kobakhidze as new PM.

Struggle for influence has become a norm for former Soviet Union and Eastern block between EU and Russia where the EU always accuse Russia of inteferring in most elections in the former Eastern blok.

The pro-EU Georgian politicians without any evidence, accused the ruling Georgian Dream Party for rigging the October elections in collusion with Russia (Russia has since denied involvement).

The new parliament/government in its earliest proceedings, decreed that Georgia’s integration with the EU should wait until 2028.

As a result of that decree, an organised protest and spearheaded by the pro-EU opposition ceremonial president, Salome Zourabichvili erupted with protesters calling for the ‘repeat’ of the parliamentary elections earlier held.

Despite all these, the new parliament guided by the 2017 rules that gave it an electoral vote college powers, elected a new president from within the ruling Georgian Dream Party, ending the pro-EU tenure of Zourabichbili.

The new elected president, Mikheil Kavelashvili is expected to be sworn in on December 29, the day the tenure of Zourabichvili is ending, but Zourabichvili is saying that she is going nowhere.

With all these developments and thousands of protesters still picketing the parliament in freezing cold winter in Tbilisi, is Georgia heading to the path of Ukraine? We are watching.

  • Zero Rabies in Enugu: Gov. Mbah urges vaccination of dogs against rabies

Zero Rabies in Enugu: Gov. Mbah urges vaccination of dogs against rabies

    By Flowerbudnews
Gov. Peter Mbah has urged dog owners in Enugu State to vaccinate their dogs against rabies as the government plans to eliminate continued transmission of the disease in the state.

Mbah said this on Sunday while flagging off the Zero Rabies in Enugu Campaign Initiative at the State Veterinary Clinic in Enugu.

The governor, represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-industrialisation, Dr Patrick Ubru, said that rabies remained one of the most preventable yet devastating diseases affecting human and animal health.

He noted that the state government in collaboration with the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, (NVMA) had taken a significant step towards ensuring the safety, health and well-being of the people and animals.

Mbah, who assured that the government would provide the necessary resources to drive the campaign, appealed to individuals, families and communities to play their part by ensuring their dogs are vaccinated.

The governor called on community and religious leaders as well as organisations and health educators to help spread awareness about the dangers of rabies in order to stop its spread in the state.

According to him, the “Zero Rabies Campaign in Enugu State” is not just an initiative; but a call to action for every stakeholder in our state and society.

“By launching this campaign, the Enugu State Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization in collaboration with NVMA is taking a significant step towards ensuring the safety, health and well-being of our people and animals.

“This campaign aligns with the global target of eliminating human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030.

“I am particularly encouraged by the collaborative approach adopted for this initiative.

“The involvement of government agencies, veterinary professionals, community leaders and international partners underscores the importance of a united front in tackling public health challenges,” Mbah said.

Corroborating, the State Chairman of NVMA, Dr Chidiebere Iloh, said the Zero Rabies Campaign aligns with the global strategy to achieve zero human deaths from dog-mediated rabies by 2030; “a vision that requires the synergy of government, professionals and communities.”

Iloh noted that rabies remained a global public health concern, with over 99 per cent of human rabies deaths resulting from dog bites.

The chairman added that most of rabies-related deaths occur in low-income and middle-income countries, including Nigeria.

Iloh revealed that veterinarians in the state are prepared to provide technical expertise in mass dog vaccination both with Enugu metropolis and even the rural communities within Enugu State.

“The collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Industrialization and the NVMA reflects a unified commitment to protecting human and animal health in our state.

“By adopting the One Health Approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health efforts, we are laying the groundwork for sustainable rabies prevention and control in the state.

“The NVMA is proud to play a leading role in this initiative.

“However, the success of this campaign requires more than technical expertise; it demands the active involvement of community leaders, pet owners (especially dog owners) and all citizens of the state,” Iloh said.

Enugu chairman urges leaders to emulate Gov. Mbah’s inclusive governance style

    By Flowerbudnews
The Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area, Mr Greg Anyaegbudike, has called on leaders to emulate Gov. Peter Mbah’s participatory and inclusive governance style to engender good governance.

Anyaegbudike made the call on Sunday in Enugu while reacting to the successful Town Hall Meeting held by Gov. Mbah and residents of Enugu State with the theme: “Governance Issues: The Journey So Far” on Saturday.

He said that Mbah had demonstrated that “governance is about inclusion and partnership of the people and getting the feeling and buy-in of the governed.”

According to him, Mbah has set world best practice of a people-driven governance system meant to prioritise the welfare and need of the people.

“The Town Hall meeting shows that governance is for the people; the people drive governance and leaders must abide by the electoral charter with the people.

“Enugu State through Gov. Mbah is setting a high standard worth of emulation by all spheres of leadership both political, community and religious among others.

“The Town Hall meetings held so far by the governor have helped to close the gap between the government and Enugu State people.

“We are all witnesses to the positive and impactful projects being executed in the state,” the chairman said.

Anyaegbudike noted that the governor had demonstrated patience and a listening ear, adding that he had accepted bright ideas and constructive criticisms meant to move the state forward.

He said that the governor was putting in place a transformation that would turn around the state in the next 30 years to be the most developed in terms of infrastructure, commerce and human capital development in the country.

“I am happy it is happening in Enugu State and it is happening in our time through a visionary and forward looking leader.

“Currently, the state is a huge construction site with over 1,000 projects scattered the length and breadth of the 17 council areas and with each of the 260 political wards having a share of the projects.

“Each political ward and our people at the community level are feeling it as our governor has dignified good governance as a tool to uplift the residents,” he said.

The chairman applauded new projects such as the governor’s plan to make Enugu aero-hub within Nigeria by investing in airport facilities and launching Enugu Air as well as providing auxiliary services to travelers.

“This will in turn attract quality investors in the aero-space and aero-hub that will make Enugu the most sought-after destination for aero-business, medical tourism, cultural and leisure tourism among others.

On replicating what Mbah has done in his council area, the chairman said that his administration would definitely reach out to get the pulse and buy-in of the people of Oji River through a town hall meeting.

Anyaegbudike said, “We had a manifesto during our electioneering period and through which we got the people’s votes.

“We are going to interface with the good people of Oji River on that and also gather constructive criticisms and bright ideas on how to develop the council area faster.”

It would be recalled that the town hall meeting was attended by a cross section of various professionals, associations, unions and bodies as well as religious, traditional and political leaders in the state.

  • VON ex-DG says PDP should be held accountable for One Party State

VON ex-DG says PDP should be held accountable for One Party State

    By Flowerbudnews

The former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should be held accountable for One Party State in Nigeria not the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okechukwu said this to journalists in Enugu on Sunday while speaking on the musings and public outrage blaming APC and by extension President Bola Tinubu, and not PDP for Nigeria’s slide to One Party State.

He dismissed the blame game on APC as the architecture of One Party State in Nigeria as misplaced.

Okechukwu, a Founding Member of APC, maintained that PDP members had been inflicted by the same humongous culture of impunity they planted in our political culture in their 16 years in power (1999-2015).

Okechukwu appealed to Nigerians to go down memory lane and recall when the Tinubu-led defunct Action Congress (AC) and the Buhari-led defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) trudged on with one governor each.

“This is despite enticing stomach infrastructure being offered by the PDP government before the APC merger, that is the hallmark of a multi-party state,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria naturally would slide into one party state when PDP the major opposition party with more than 10 governors were afflicted by stomach infrastructure syndrome.

“One without being immodest recalled how Engr. Buba Galadima, then National Secretary of CPC was arrested and hounded at eve of 2007 General Elections and offered all manner of carrots to abandon CPC and by extension Buhari.

“Or, how we trudged on with minimal family survival in the 13 years interval before 2015,” he said.

Okechukwu reminisced that since the APC merger in 2013, PDP members, even their Presidential Candidate, converted the APC to Rehabilitation Center, instead of adopting the prerequisite ingredients of opposition – resilience, grit and patience.

He added that it was because of a culture of impunity that made the PDP to off-handedly jettison the rotation convention of president from north to south and even Section 7 of the PDP’s Constitution, which made rotation mandatory.

“Imagine the breach of rotation convention by the PDP leadership not minding the unintended consequences, with the erroneous thought that His Excellency Atiku Abubakar will unlock the northern electorate from their dormitory to vote PDP in the 2023 presidential election.

“This is misjudgment pure and simple with its collateral damages, one of which is One Party State.

“They are at it again with fake arithmetic of South 17 years and North 11 years rule since 1999, as if Nigeria got Independence in 1999,” Okechukwu added.

When asked what the APC is doing with economic hardship in the country? Okechukwu noted that on the issue of economic hardship there are lights at the tunnel.

He said, “Am in league with IPMAN, TUC and a host of others for reduction of fuel pump price, luckily it is already happening as NNPC has started the reduction process.

“Secondly, I held a meeting with our APC National Chairman, Dr Umar Ganduje, where he assured me that the Livestock Ministry will find a ranch solution to herders/farmers crisis which will allow farmers to access their farms.

“And also that President Tinubu is in deep negotiations with investors in the electricity chain, Eastern Corridor Standard Gauge Railways and Deep Seaports etc.

“It is my candid opinion that with the new mandate Tinubu gave the development commissions – South-East, South-West, South-South, North-West, North-Central and North-East – to shop for foreign investors, the economic hardship will be alleviated.”
