Yuletide: CISLAC decries stampedes as food distribution turn sour

    By Perpetua Onuegbu
Abuja:   The Executive Director of the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Rafsanjani, has condemned the alarming state of hunger in Nigeria, emphasising the devastating impact of poor governance and an inadequate response to rising poverty levels.

Rafsanjani said in a statement on Sunday while reacting to the tragic stampedes that claimed dozens of lives across the country during food distribution events.

Rafsanjani described the incidents as heartbreaking reflections of the severe hardship Nigerians are enduring.

“This is a clear indication that Nigerians are facing very difficult times under this administration,” he said.

“Unfortunately, the government appears detached from the realities on the ground and has failed to take the necessary steps to address a situation they helped to escalate. While these tragic incidents have been reported, many more may be occurring unnoticed as people are desperately hungry.”

“In Abuja, a stampede during a food distribution exercise at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama claimed ten lives, including four children, while leaving several others injured.

The event, intended to provide relief to vulnerable individuals, turned tragic early Saturday morning as a crowd of over a thousand overwhelmed the venue.

“A similar incident occurred in Okija, Anambra State, where a rice distribution exercise organized by philanthropist Chief Ernest Obiejesi resulted in the death of at least 12 people and left over 30 others injured.

“Witnesses reported that an uncontrolled crowd caused a stampede before the event could commence, underscoring the desperation among citizens.

The CISLAC boss also noted the unfortunate incident in Ibadan Oyo State, a children’s funfair hosted by Women in Need of Governance and Support (WINGS), an initiative of Queen Naomi Silekunola, turned fatal when an overcrowded entrance led to a stampede.

“Many children tragically lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries as they struggled to gain access to the event.
“These incidents are avoidable but highlight the depth of hunger and deprivation in our society,” Rafsanjani added. “The government must urgently adopt measures to address food insecurity, create jobs, and alleviate the suffering of the people.”

He further stated that the escalating insecurity in the country has exacerbated this crisis. Many farmers are unable to cultivate crops due to persistent banditry and violence, leading to reduced agricultural production.

“The Tinubu administration must prioritize securing the nation and revitalizing the agricultural sector. State and local governments must also play an active role in encouraging agricultural activities to curb rural-urban migration and reduce unemployment.

CISLAC urged federal and state governments to prioritize policies that tackle poverty and inequality while ensuring the safety and dignity of citizens during public aid and relief programs. The organization also called for improved planning and coordination during such events to prevent further loss of life.

Rafsanjani noted that the tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the growing desperation among Nigerians and the urgent need for effective and compassionate governance to address the challenges facing the nation.(NAN)

    By Muhammed Enes Calli

ISTANBUL:  The head of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urged action late Friday as children in the Gaza Strip face bloodshed on a daily basis.

“The world cannot look away when so many children are exposed to daily bloodshed, hunger, disease, and cold,” Catherine Russell said in a statement.

“We urgently call on all parties to the conflict, and on those with influence over them, to take decisive action to end the suffering of children, to release all hostages, to ensure children’s rights are upheld, and to adhere to obligations under international humanitarian law.”

She noted that 33 people, including at least eight children, were reportedly killed Thursday in another “devastating attack” on the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.

“The latest violence adds to a staggering figure of more than 160 children reportedly killed in Gaza in a little over a month. That is an average of four children every day since the beginning of November,” she said.

Russell emphasized that during the last 14 months, more than 14,500 children have reportedly been killed and nearly all of the 1.1 million children in Gaza urgently require protection and mental health assistance.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its battle against fake and adulterated products nationwide,  confiscating N5 billion worth of counterfeit products in Nasarawa and Abuja.

FLOWERBUDNEWS recall that few days ago, NAFDAC recorded a similar major success against counterfeiters as it raided the popular Eziukwu Market in Aba, Abia State,  shutting down 150 shops loaded with various expired and fake products.

It  confiscated fake and adulterated products worth about N5 Billion during the enforcement operation which lasted two days.

FLOWERBUDNEWS learnt that the increasing intensity of NAFDAC operations against counterfeiters and their fake products followed a stern directive from the Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, for the  undertaking of serious enforcement to safeguard public health as the nation enters the yuletide season.

In the Nasarawa and Abuja enforcement operations, NAFDAC shut down eight rice shops and a warehouse in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The operation, which also extended to Wuse and Garki markets in Abuja, led to the seizure of over 1,600 bags of counterfeit rice valued at approximately N5 billion.

Officials uncovered counterfeit rice repackaged in branded bags, including popular names like Big Bull, Royal Stallion, and Tomato Aposo, designed to deceive consumers.

During the enforcement operation, led by Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the FCT Directorate of NAFDAC, at the Karu facility, empty branded rice bags were also discovered.

    Operation prompted by intelligence reports

Azikiwe explained that the operation was initiated based on intelligence received from members of the public and reports from the owners of the affected brands.

“Upon receiving these intelligence tips, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, issued a directive that only safe, quality, and wholesome food products should be available to Nigerians during the yuletide and beyond.

“She specifically instructed that those counterfeiting popular brands of rice should be arrested and their products removed from the market,” he added.

    Crackdown on counterfeiting and rebranding

Azikiwe further noted that the NAFDAC D-G also ordered corporate enforcement actions against those rebranding other people’s products.

“This act of counterfeiting rice is illegal. Consumers believe they are buying quality products, but the quality is often substandard,” he emphasized.

    Night operations in residential warehouses

Following surveillance activities, NAFDAC uncovered facilities where a woman specialized in repackaging popular rice brands such as Bull 25kg, Stallion Rice 10kg, and Tomatoes Rice 25kg, among others. The operation was carried out in a warehouse behind her residential house, which is done only at night.

“Once the repackaging is completed, the products are moved to another warehouse during the day for sale to unsuspecting consumers,” Azikiwe explained. To avoid suspicion, the packaging materials were stored in her residence.

During the raid, NAFDAC confiscated the packaging materials, seized finished products, and inspected her warehouse and stores.

All counterfeit brands found there were confiscated. Additional warehouses involved in similar operations were also visited, and their products were destroyed.

    Consumer advisory and precautions

Azikiwe advised the public to buy goods only from accredited and trusted food shops, especially during the festive season.

“People must learn to purchase from reputable dealers or supermarkets that maintain a reliable supply chain for quality products,” he stated.

He further urged Nigerians to always check for NAFDAC registration numbers, along with the manufacturing and expiry dates, on all products they purchase.
