Recently, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, representing Ogun West, made a bold move in his bid to become the next Governor of Ogun State.

The politician, famously known as Yayi, validated his status as a potential candidate from Ogun Central with a talk-of-the-town homecoming to “Kemta-Odutola, in the heart of Itoku Adire Complex in Abeokuta (the state capital).”

He labeled the place his maternal home.

This strategic political play strengthens his position as a significant stakeholder in Ogun Central, which has consistently shared prominence in producing Governors of Ogun State since its creation in 1976.

Ogun West, a low-vote area that Senator Yayi represents, is yet to produce a Governor and has been plagued by infighting, which has historically worked against presenting a united front.

Checks revealed that Senator Yayi’s positioning in Ogun Central is boosting his gubernatorial ambition, allowing him to transcend the limitations associated with coming from Ogun West.

“He is now increasingly being considered as someone from Ogun Central despite representing Ogun West in the Senate. Talks on the streets are major indicators of this,” sources say.

This perception is reportedly grounded in Yayi’s far-reaching statewide campaigns—which include various life-touching gestures themed around empowerment—that have endeared him to people across political divides, with traces of these efforts dating as far back as 2012.

Unverified claims suggest that Yayi’s ancestral assertion in Ogun Central is part of a calculated arrangement to gain the support of decision-makers in the zone. This strategy is reportedly playing to his advantage in the race to succeed Governor Abiodun, who will leave office in 2027 after serving two terms of four years each.

Shiites accuse police of arresting members after peaceful birthday celebration in Abuja

Members of the Islamic Movement, also known as the Shiites, on Monday, accused men and officers of the Nigerian Police Force of arresting their members in Abuja after the just-concluded birthday celebration of the daughter of Prophet Muhammad (SAWW).

Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara disclosed this in a statement on behalf of the Islamic Movement under the leadership of his Eminence Sayyid Ibraheem Ya’qoub El-Zakzaky (H) in Abuja.

The statement is titled: “Again, Police Arrest Participants of Birthday Celebration in Abuja.”

It reads: “Following the just-concluded birthday celebration of the daughter of Prophet Muhammad SAWW today in Abuja, we wish to draw the attention of the general public that FCT Police has arrested activists of the Islamic Movement.

“There was no form of provocation from the participants warranting the arrest.

“In fact, they were preparing to leave the venue for their respective destinations.

“Those arrested are mostly women and minors, including a 3 month old infant.

“This incident is the latest in a series of similar events, where security forces have been abusing their power by targeting innocent civilians who are exercising their legal rights.

“As at the time of writing this article, we could not confirm the exact number of those arrested; however, from the information we reliably obtained from eyewitnesses, the figure is around 200 people or thereabouts.

” Nevertheless, we will update the public in due course.”

Mainasara called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected.

“The security agents should note that the freedom to peaceful assembly is an inalienable constitutional right that must not be violated,” he concluded.

BPP unveils new vision to eliminate procurement fraud

    By Flowerbud News

The Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr Adebowale Adedokun has unveiled a new vision to eliminate procurement fraud in the country.

This was the central focus of a press conference themed “Renewed Hope Through Strategic Procurement” which held in Abuja on Monday.

Adedokun stated that the goal is to eliminate procurement fraud and ensure that the Federal Government obtains optimal value for all its contracts.

“The new vision is anchored on three key pillars: transparency and accountability; competence, efficiency, integrity, and innovation; and inclusivity and economic growth,” he said.

He explained that, in the coming year, the BPP plans to deploy an electronic procurement system to allow government agencies to conduct e-advertisements, improving cost efficiency and transparency.

The BPP will also focus on enhancing career development for procurement officers and strengthening partnerships with anti-corruption agencies and other stakeholders.

“Inclusivity will remain a cornerstone of our strategy, and we will strengthen our oversight functions by implementing categorisation and classification systems for contractors and construction,” he said.

Adedokun further outlined that the bureau would adopt intelligence and benchmarking systems to regularly review and update policies and practices to stay aligned with prevailing standards.

He noted that the BPP would address ongoing challenges, such as project implementation delays, capacity gaps, and limited awareness.

“These challenges present opportunities for growth, innovation, and the establishment of new benchmarks for public procurement excellence in Nigeria.

“By leveraging technology, fostering collaboration, and empowering our workforce, we will overcome these obstacles and set a new standard for public procurement excellence in Nigeria,” Adedokun added.

The D-G also mentioned that sanctions would be imposed for poor conduct, while good practices would be rewarded.

He stressed that the BPP would work closely with anti-corruption agencies to ensure that violations of public procurement practices are met with stringent penalties.

“Agencies that adopt open, transparent, and competitive procurement procedures in line with BPP standards will be openly recognised.

“We will enter into Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with relevant anti-corruption agencies to enforce appropriate standards,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that also present at the press briefing were the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr Musa Aliu, and the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau, Dr Abdullahi Bello.

  • Enugu farmers decry cattle encroachment on farmlands, irrigation canal

Enugu farmers decry cattle encroachment on farmlands, irrigation canal

    By Flowerbudnews
Rice farmers preparing for dry season farming in Enugu State have decried encroachment of cattle on their farmlands and destruction of newly-completed concrete canal facility at Ada Rice Irrigation System.

The multi-billion naira 22.45km long canal lining project was undertaken by the Federal Government under the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program Phase-One (ATASP-1) with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The project was designed to provide steady water supply to the over 1,500 hectares of rice field for dry season farming in the vast agrarian Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

It was gathered that while the project was awaiting official commissioning and farmers getting prepared for commencement of first dry season farming early next year, hundreds of cattle have recently invaded the area, wreaking havoc on farmlands and irrigation facility.

A prominent farmer, who spoke under condition of anonymity due to security concern, disclosed that activities of cattle and their herders pose a serious threat to Federal Government’s quest to turn the irrigation command area into major rice production hub.

“We are still celebrating the completion of this gigantic irrigation project and making plans to commence dry season farming but what we are seeing in the rice farmlands are scary.

“Apart from the fact that they flooded the area with cattle, a lot of damages had already been done to the canal by cattle trying to cross through it.

“The rate at which they are going, I doubt if that facility can adequately supply water to the rice fields because of the breaches along the canal lines,” he said.

Another prominent farmer, who simply give his name as Chief Ben, called on the Federal, state and local government authorities to urgently come to their rescue to avert major drawbacks.

“I speak on behalf of other farmers in Uzo-Uwani council area whose lives and means of livelihood are in danger as a result of the activities of cattle in our farmlands. We are calling for urgent measures to address this challenge.

“It is a challenge because we have witnessed a lot of disruptions as a result of cattle and herders’ activities and despite repeated calls for them to steer clear of this area and allow us do our farming activities without fear, they kept coming.

“We believe this will derail the Federal Government aim to make this area a rice production hub”, he stressed.

A female farmer, Mrs Roseline Monday, disclosed that she was forced to abandon her rice farm last season due to frequent attacks and killings in the area.

“We have been living in fears in recent times and could not visit our farms in far places because of attacks taking place there.

“Now, we are excited that the canal had been completed and that we can start dry season farming, but that excitement has gone because of these cows that were roaming about everywhere.

“It is a big threat to our farming activities. Apart from damages they do to our crops, they also destroying canals which could also disrupt water flow through the channels”, Monday added.

A youth farmer, who identified himself simply as Ifeanyi, stressed that most farmers are living in fear as a result of the development because of potential clash that may escalate as a result of activities of cattle in the area.

“We are begging government to come fast and rescue us from the hands of cattle rearers and their animal.

“We don’t want to fight anyone. We just want to farm on our lands. But these animals pose a great threat to that”, he said.

Reacting, state Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr Patrick Ubru, said that it was quite pathetic that cattle had destroyed a canal rehabilitated through state government’s counterpart funds running into several millions of naira.

Ubru noted that his ministry was already working to repair the damaged canal, adding that the government was determined to make the Ada Rice Irrigation System work for the farmers and the state in general.

He said, “One wonders why herders will allow their cattle to destroy a canal just rehabilitated through counterpart funding and holds the livelihood of thousands of farmers and their families in that area.

“We are in the process of taking statistics of farmers in that area, who will use the irrigation system for early next year dry seasoning farming before the unfortunate incident.

“We are not deterred, as we are working to get security personnel – vigilant group, Forest Guard and others – in that area to ensure it does not repeat and the huge investment work for our dry season rice farmers.”

  • Alleged cybercrime: Drama in court as suspect begs to change plea

Alleged cybercrime: Drama in court as suspect begs to change plea

There was a mild drama at a Federal High Court in Abuja as a suspect begged to retake his plea after pleading guilty to the two-count charge read to him.
The suspect, Adun Adewale, also known as “Coachbanter,” was arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on alleged cybercrime offence against Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the I-G had, in the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/634/2024, sued Adewale as sole defendant.

In the charge filed on Dec. 17 by A.A. Egwu, the defendant was alleged to have, sometime in 2024, intentionally sent video recording by means of computer system and network through his Tiktok username: “@brodabanter_backup_page” and handle “CoachBanter.”

Adewale was alleged to have said in the said video, “Police IG Egbetokun busted for colluding with notorious cartel moving cash from CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) vault via Abuja, Lagos airport.”

The statement he knew to be false, “for the purpose of causing a breakdown of law and order.”

The offence is said to be contrary to and punishable under Section 24 (1) (b) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.

In count two, he was also alleged to have sent a video through his Tiktok username accusing Egbetokun of victimising police officers to shield members of a cartel notorious for hauling suspicious new bank notes from the CBN.

The statement, which was said to be false, was contrary to and punishable under Section 24 (1) (b) of Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) (Amendment) Act, 2024.
Upon resumed hearing, the I-G’s counsel, Victor Okoye, told the court that the matter was slated for the arraignment of the defendant and that he was ready to proceed.
After count one was read to Adewale, he pleaded guilty.
When the registrar read count two, the defendant said: “I pleaded guilty with reason.”
“What is the reason?” Justice Nwite asked.
Adewale explained from the dock that he saw the post somewhere and he forwarded it to his page.
His lawyer, O.A Olaleye, therefore, prayed the court for a stand down in order to confer with his client.
Although Okoye opposed the application, the judge stood down the matter in the interest of justice.
After the court reconvened, Adewale’s lawyer told the court that he had discussion with his client and Adewale told him that he (defendant) did not understand the charge read to him.
Based on this premise, the lawyer prayed the court for the charge to be read again for his client to take his plea.
But Okoye vehemently opposed the application.
He argued that before Adewale took his plea, he was asked if he understood English Language and he responded in affirmative.
The prosecutor said besides, the defendant was represented by a lawyer.
He said the law is clear that when a defendant understands the charge read to him, it does not behove on the lawyer to persuade the defendant to change his plea.
Justice Nwite consequently adjourned the matter until Dec. 30 for the parties to address the court on the position of law in such instance.
