COAS fetes troops of Operation UDO KA, charges troops to stay focus

    By Flowerbudnews

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has feted troops of Joint Task-Force South-East code-named ‘Operation UDO KA’ in the field to lunch and cultural displays activity marking Christmas.

The COAS also charged troops to stay focused and end all forms of insecurity especially heinous crimes in Operation UDO KA’s Areas of Responsibility – South-East and Cross River State -.

The Nigerian Army boss, represented Maj.-Gen. Obinna Ajunwa, Director-General of Army Heritage and Future Centre, said this on Thursday during the Special Christmas Lunch at the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ivo within Ebonyi State.

The COAS noted that the Nigerian Army would continue to give priority to the welfare of its personnel and their families throughout the country.

“My thanks and appreciation goes to officers and soldiers in the field of various operations who might not have the opportunity to be with their loved ones this festive period.

“The collective efforts of our troops to protect lives and property are well appreciated by well-meaning Nigerians.

“I, therefore, thank you all and urge you to remain focused, disciplined and loyal to constituted authorities, while ensuring we are fully commitment to carry out our constitution responsibility.

“I urge you (troops) to maintain the spirit of patriotism and continue to give your best to your assigned duties daily,” he said.

The COAS noted that all army personnel should remain apolitical and loyal to the Nigerian Constitution.

“As we also celebrate this Christmas, let us use the opportunity to remember and pray for the souls of officers and soldiers that have paid the ultimate price while serving our fatherland.

“This included our immediate past Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja. Which all of us here knows he was one time the General Officer Commanding of this Division.

“Our hearts and thoughts are always with their families and pray that Almighty God will continue to grant their souls eternal rest,” he said.

Earlier, the Force Commander of Operation UDO KA, Maj.-Gen. Hassan Dada, said that the Special Christmas lunch was meant to commemorate the achievements of the 82 Division troops that primary carry out the operation.

Dada, who is also the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, said that the lunch had afforded the troops the opportunity to wine and dine with the COAS, top officers and commanders of the Division.

According to him, this event is part of concerted efforts to sustain the morale of the troops, to celebrate their achievements so far as well as acknowledge the sacrifices put in to achieve all these feats.

“Not minding the peculiar Division’s operating environment and myriad of security threats in the country; I will implore troops of the Division to remain steadfast in the discharge of their constitutional responsibility in tandem with the COAS Command’s philosophy.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank the commanders and soldiers that have been on the field for making the Division proud.

“Without the dedication of troops of the operation, we will not have achieved the much we have done. I sincerely appreciated the commanders for putting in the necessary sacrifice,” he said.

Tinubu’s Media chat signposts drop in food and petrol prices – TMV

    By Iyiola Olalere

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has said that President Bola Tinubu’s maiden media chat has once again proved that he has a grasp of the economic conditions of Nigerians and has workable and realistic solutions for them.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Sunday Shedrach, the group argued that the President was empathic on the efficacy of his reforms.

TMV said: “We note that in the media chat, President Tinubu announced his government’s plans to procure 2000 tractors soonest for the Nigerian farmers.

“This policy is aimed at bringing his government’s agriculture mechanization programme into effect. It is gratifying that he acknowledged that Nigeria can not continue with the model of agriculture that was practised during the days of his grandfathers.

“Definitely, this policy will enhance the policy of food security and ultimately reduce poverty in the land. Similarly, President Tinubu acknowledged the hardship inherent in the fuel subsidy but was quick to remind Nigerians that the policy has led to healthy competition, thereby making the commodity available as prices have started dropping.

“According to him, this is the hallmark of a free market economy which his government is encouraging. He also believed that the policy has eliminated monopoly and corruption in the sector to the benefit of all Nigerians.

“We note that the President has used the opportunity of the media chat to clarify many issues surrounding fuel subsidy removal and reassured Nigerians of a brighter future as well as his government’s commitment to addressing the hardship associated with the economic reforms of his administration.”

The group implored Nigerians to repose faith in the Tinubu administration ahead of the new year.

  • Tinubu’s maiden media chat, a glimpse of President’s grasp of prosperous economy-TMSG

Tinubu’s maiden media chat, a glimpse of President’s grasp of prosperous economy-TMSG

    By Danladi Ahmed

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has said that President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural media chat has proved his sound grasp of an economy that works for the collective prosperity of Nigerians

In a statement signed by its Chairman Emeka Nwankpa and Secretary Dapo Okubanjo, TMSG said that the president’s bold assertions on the efficacy of ongoing reforms are inspiring and commendable.

It said: “With 18 months in office, the Presidential media chat offered Nigerians the first great opportunity to hear President Bola Tinubu’s unscripted sound bite on the economy and his reforms.

“For us, it was a performance that showed a sound grasp of the economy, its direction, and the expected positive outcomes of the ongoing reforms.

“There are already several sound bites and quotes from the media chats that aptly capture President Tinubu’s economic policies for anyone who is still in doubt about his perspectives.

“For instance, we see the President’s firm stance on the removal of fuel subsidy as soon as he assumed office as a bold one that is indeed meant to preserve the country’s future.

“And while many people would have seen price control as a means of taming food inflation in the aftermath of fuel subsidy removal, the President’s emphatic dismissal of such suggestion during the media chat is instructive.

“It showed a President who dares to drive his conviction. It shows a leader determined to allow the interplay of the forces of demand and supply. Perhaps most defining is his affirmation that providing food in surplus for domestic consumption is the ultimate answer to food inflation in the country.

“Tied to this is the President’s Agriculture mechanisation programme which involves the establishment of a local assembly plant for tractors, harvesters, disc riders, bottom ploughs, and other farm equipment, which has a 2025 time frame for completion.

“We also find it interesting that the President brought, into the discourse, one of the takeaways from his recent visit to Brazil where he secured a $2.5bn investment from JBS one of the world’s largest meat packaging companies.

“Aside from the economic benefit of the investment in Nigeria’s livestock sector, many Nigerians have failed to realize that it was an investment that came within a few months of President Tinubu’s decision to create a Ministry of Livestock Development.

“This also speaks to his position during the media chat about the decision to create additional ministries and the efficiency of his cabinet.

“We dare say that apart from the Livestock Development ministry, other new ministries like Marine and Blue Economy and the Creative Economy are a reflection of his clear-headedness in a changing world of multiple opportunities.”

TMSG also touched on President Tinubu’s tax reform proposals as well as his reaffirmation of the plan to reduce the current inflation rate by more than 50 per cent.

“Like many Nigerians, we are enthused by the President’s audacious assertion of his intention to reduce the inflation rate from 34.6% to 15%, and we make bold to say that he would prove sceptics wrong.

“As for the proposed tax reforms, it takes a man who understands how the economy works to push for the sort of reforms that underline the tax bills currently before the National Assembly.

“The President boldly affirmed that the reform is pro-poor contrary to the stark picture painted by opposition politicians and sceptics.

“He is also realistic enough to know that there might be some concessions in some parts of the proposed tax reform that are contentious,” the group added.

TMSG urged Nigerians to see President Tinubu’s performance at the media chat as an expression of confidence in the efficacy of his economic policies.

Gov. Adeleke pardons boy convicted for stealing chicken, 52 others

Adeleke, in a statement by his Spokesperson Olawale Rasheed on Thursday, said the order was in line with the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.

He said the recommendation by the council is to mark the 2024 Christmas celebration.

“Gov. Ademola Adeleke has exercised the prerogative of mercy towards 53 convicts serving various convictions within the Nigerian Correctional Service.

“The letter of commutation, dated Dec. 24 has since been received and acknowledged by the relevant prison authorities,” he said.

He said the inmates recommended for the ‘prerogative of mercy’ are inmates convicted of simple offences who have served substantial portions of their sentences.

According to him, the prerogative of mercy also extends to convicts sentenced to death but have spent a minimum of 10 years in custody.

“In the case of the 30 inmates convicted of simple offences, I have decided in accordance with the said recommendation to remit and forgive the remainder of the said sentences in whole.

“Whereas, I have decided in accordance with the said recommendation to grant outright pardon to 12 inmates convicted of simple offences.

“Four convicts have their sentences commuted from death to outright pardon.

“And whereas I have decided in accordance with the said recommendation to commute the sentences as follows, one convict has his sentence commuted from death to 15 years imprisonment.

“Six convicts have their sentences commuted from death to outright release,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that one of the four convicts recommended for outright pardon is ‘Segun Olowokere’ sentenced to death, at the age of 17, in 2010, for stealing chicken and eggs.

An Osun State High Court, sitting in Ikirun, convicted Olowokere alongside some others, for robbing a poultry farm in Oyan, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of the state

  • Shell’s $5 billion Bonga deep water investment, sign that Nigeria remains top investment destination in oil and gas – TDF

Shell’s $5 billion Bonga deep water investment, sign that Nigeria remains top investment destination in oil and gas – TDF

    By Iyiola Olalere
The Democratic Front (TDF) has said that the announcement of a $5 billion final Investment Decision (FID) by Shell on the Bonga North Deep Offshore field is yet another proof of the investment-friendly mindset of the Tinubu administration.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary Chief Wale Adedayo, the group noted that it showed that International Oil Companies (IOCs) still found Nigeria attractive for investment.

The statement read in part: ” We join President Bola Tinubu in celebrating the Final Investment Decision (FID) by Shell on Bonga North Offshore Field.

“It is a thing of pride for us that the investment is the outcome of reforms introduced by the President through the Presidential Directives numbers 40, 41, and 42 to fast-track regulatory approvals, reduce operational costs, and promote competitive fiscal incentives in the oil and gas sector.

“We have a conviction that the pertinence of the fresh investment in the sector and indeed the larger Nigeria economy is not only limited to the $5 billion value of the investment but also extends to the field’s potential volume of 350 million barrels of crude oil.

“It is a development that is bound to further raise the nation’s oil output and revenue as well as bolster its position as Africa’s largest oil producer.

“Like the President, we are elated about Shell’s $5bn deep water investment especially as it came at a time of misconceptions about IOCs leaving Nigeria when indeed many of them are making strategic investment decisions in response to the administration’s incentives.

“We recall that earlier this year, the Ubeta upstream gas field known as OML 58, attracted a $500 million investment from TotalEnergies on account of President Tinubu’s fiscal incentives to drive foreign direct investments into the newly transformed oil and gas sector.

“The Ubeta upstream field is estimated to produce 350 million standard cubic feet of gas per day when operational and will go a long way to raise the country’s profile as a major gas producer. This remarkable economic feat was unarguably achieved under the economic reform of President Bola Tinubu.

“It is instructive that since its discovery in 1996, the Bonga deepwater field, located in OML 118, at water depth exceeding 1000 meters, has not witnessed such a humongous investment as the $5 billion coming from Shell and this is an attestation of President Tinubu’s pro-business approach to governance.

“Furthermore, this extraordinary display of confidence in Nigeria’s investment ecosystem is a confirmation of the success of the current reforms in eliminating investment encumbrances and the risks of doing business in Nigeria.”

TDF is confident that more IOCs will key into the fiscal incentives introduced by the Tinubu administration to make fresh investments in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

    By Salisu Sani-Idris

Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), a Civil Society Organisation (CSO) has charged Alhaji Alidu Shutti, the newly appointed acting Secretary, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to live up to expectations.

It’s National Coordinator, Malam Ibrahim Muhammad, made the call in a statement on Thursday in Abuja.

Muhammad emphasised the need for Alhaji Shutti to ensure synergy with all stakeholders within the Hajj and Umrah industry.

He commended the leadership NAHCON for looking inward to appoint an acting secretary to the commission within its members of staff.

“We have always advocated for looking inwards whenever there is a vacancy within the commission because we believe the staff are better placed to serve better owing to their wealth of experience.

“Hajj being a highly technical and unique exercise requires people with practical on-field experience to steer it successfully.

“We are particularly delighted in Shutti’s choice because of his wealth of experience and rose through the ranks, Muhammad said.

The coordinator stated that Shutti had shown remarkable abilities in all the positions he held in NAHCON to date.

He also implored the leadership of NAHCON to look inward to fill vacant positions.

According to him, this development will motivate staff to strive for excellent, knowing they have a brighter prospect for career advancement. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • Christmas: Archbishop Chukwuma urges political leaders to declare emergency on poverty

Christmas: Archbishop Chukwuma urges political leaders to declare emergency on poverty

    By Flowerbudnews
The Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, the Emeritus Archbishop of the Anglican Arch-Diocese of Enugu, has urged political leaders at all levels to declare a state of emergency on poverty.

Chukwuma made the call in a Christmas message he issued on Wednesday in Enugu.

The archbishop noted that there was a need to tackle the menace of poverty, which naturally leads to hunger, headlong.

He said that the various stampedes in places where they give free food palliatives in parts of the country could be avoided, if issues of poverty and its attendant fall outs were dealt with holistically and permanently.

The cleric said, “The recent incidents and loss of scores of lives remained a huge embarrassment to us as individual Nigerians and collectively as a nation.

“The latest unfortunate incidents, which I personally commiserate with individuals, families and communities involved, calls for a national action from the community to the Presidential levels on how to rescue our people from poverty and hunger.”

According to him, it is sad that many people and homes in the country will have a sad and sober Christmas owing to the unfortunate stampedes.

On Christmas, Chukwuma called on Christians to celebrate with sober reflection due to the recent sad incidents and hard times in the country.

He urged Christians to use this period to draw closer to God because Jesus Christ is coming soon to judge the world.

He said, “Nigerians should love one another and eschew bitterness.

“Our politicians should remember the poor in their constituencies and plan developmental programmes that will help the people live above poverty and hunger.”
