How kidnappers tortured us in Imo – Rescued victims

    By Dayo Oyewo

The four kidnap victims rescued by the Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit on Saturday have shared their experience in the hands of their abductors.

The victims, Mrs Carolyn Didia, Mrs Ego Odu, Mrs Apollonia Ezekwe, and Mr Godwin Ezekwe, were in the same vehicle when they were kidnapped on the Obosima-Ohoba road in the Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of the state on Friday.

According to the victims, they were ambushed by the gunmen while travelling to Owerri from their community in Awarra for a wedding, adding that the kidnappers shot at their vehicle, forcing them to stop.

The driver of the SUV conveying them was said to have attempted to flee but was caught and macheted by the kidnappers.

Speaking to our correspondent on Sunday, Godwin, a Lagos-based computer system merchant, said the gunmen first shot their vehicle from behind before another set ambushed them some metres ahead of them.

“I was on my way to Owerri on Friday evening at about 6 pm in a commercial vehicle with five other passengers for my niece’s wedding. When we were between Ohoba and Obosima, I saw some gunmen who started shooting at the back of our vehicle. As we drove fast ahead, we encountered another set in front and we had to stop.

”Our driver ran away after stopping the vehicle, but they pursued him, caught him and macheted him. We were six and they allowed two elderly women among us to go and took the remaining four of us into the bush which looked like the Sambisa forest. We trekked from about 6 pm till 3 am.

“We got to a spot and were asked to stay there. That was how they started to beat us. They asked us to call our relatives and tell them where we were and that they should send N150m. After a while, we all stayed on the spot and by 7 am, we started walking again till 12am on Saturday. The next place we got to, they discovered that people were passing there so we stopped again and they slept off in the process.”

It was then that a hunter saw us and went back to the community to inform others.”

Ezekwe said the moment other hunters came to the spot, the kidnappers became upset and shot him in his two legs. He added that the hunters rescued him and others from where he was taken to the hospital for medical attention.

In a video obtained by PUNCH Metro on Sunday, Odu, on her part, said the gunmen forced them out of the vehicle and started to beat the four of them.

She said, “I was heading to my sister’s wedding in Owerri to cook for her. The moment they ambushed our vehicle, they forced us out of the vehicle and started to beat us. I was not familiar with the area they took us to. We just kept walking till this morning (Saturday) until we were rescued.”

Another victim, Didia, lamented that they were forced to walk long distances, saying, “A tricycle was ahead of us when the incident happened but they allowed the tricycle to drive a bit far from us when five gunmen came out of the bush.  They made us walk long distances in the bush as they started taking us from one point to another. That was how we moved till morning.”

The Imo State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit in a statement on Saturday said it rescued the victims after a gunfight with the kidnappers, resulting in the death of two suspects.

The police spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, confirmed the rescue operation and the neutralisation of the two suspects.

He revealed that in the process of rescuing the victims, the police recovered one AK-47 rifle, 21 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, and a magazine from the criminals.

  • N300m Suit: Court to hear Speed Darlington’s Case against I-G Jan. 13

N300m Suit: Court to hear Speed Darlington’s Case against I-G Jan. 13

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, fixed Jan. 13 to hear a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by the detained Singer, Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington.

He filed the lawsuit against the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Justice Musa Liman fixed the date after counsel for the singer, Abubakar Marshal, sought an adjournment to enable the I-G’s lawyer, Garba Audu, study and to respond accordingly to the processes served on him in the open court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Liman had, on Dec. 23, 2024, ordered the I-G to charge Speed Darlington to court or release him on bail unconditionally within 48 hours.

The judge made the order in a ruling on an ex-parte motion moved by lawyer who appeared for Achakpo, David Ihuoma, and adjourned the matter until Jan. 6 for the hearing of the substantive case .

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Speed Darlington, 39, was allegedly arrested by the police over allegations of “defamation and cyberstalking” of the ace award-winning artiste, Damini Ogulu, aka Burna Boy but was released on bail on Oct. 8, 2024.

A lawyer and human right activist, Deji Adeyanju alleged that Speed Darlington was apprehended in Lagos State following a petition by Burna Boy, and was moved to Abuja where he had been in detention.
Upon resumed hearing in the matter on Monday, Marshal informed the court that the matter was scheduled for hearing of the originating motion on notice for the enforcement of Achakpo’s fundamental rights.
Although Audu said he was yet to be served with the process, the court however confirmed through the proof of service in the court record that the police were duly served.

The judge thereafter directed Marshal to avail Audu with a copy of the application in the open court.

Justice Liman then asked Marshal if the singer had been released but the lawyer responded in the negative.

Responding, Audu explained to the court that the I-G had already filed a criminal charge against Speed Darlington before the singer filed the motion ex-parte for his release.

He said the singer was admitted to administrative bail but allegedly jumped the bail.

The police lawyer said that the charge, which was filed before Justice Ekerete Akpan of Court 13, came up earlier in December 2024, but could not be heard.

He said an application was also written to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court for the reassignment of the criminal matter to a vacation judge so that the defendant can be arraigned but all to no avail.

He explained that the criminal matter was now fixed for Jan. 15 for Speed Darlington’s arraignment before Justice Akpan.
The lawyer further explained that contrary to insinuation, the police did not flout the order of the court as it would have been difficult to arraign the defendant at the time the order was made going by the Christmas holiday.
Marshal, therefore, prayed the court to direct the police to release the singer to him pending when he would be arraigned.
“We shall be applying pending the trial and arraignment of the applicant that your lordship make an order admitting him to bail.
“If my lord will, as ministers in the temple of justice, we will ensure his presence in court on the day of arraignment,” he said, but Audu opposed the application.
Justice Liman, who agreed that the police were not in deliberate disobedience to the court order, advised Audu to ensure Speed Darlington is released to Marshal, having undertook to produce him in court.
“I don’t see anything the police will lose if granted bail,” the judge advised.
He subsequently adjourned the matter until Jan. 13 for hearing of the substantive matter.
NAN reports that in the fundamental right suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1832/2024, Speed Darlington sued I-G as sole respondent.
The artiste, who urged the court to declare that his arrest and detention violated his fundamental rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution, sought four orders.
In the suit filed by Adeyanju, he sought an order directing the I-G to immediately and unconditionally release him from detention facility where he is being kept.

Alternatively, he sought an order mandating and compelling the I-G to produce him before the court to enable the court inquire into the circumstances constituting grounds of his arrest and detention and where it deems fit, admits him to bail.

He also sought “an order directing the respondent to pay the applicant the sum of N300,000,000.00 (Three Hundred Million Naira) only as general, exemplary and aggravating damages for their unlawful and continued detention since the 2024 till date.”

In the affidavit deposed to by Esther Eyisi, a secretary in the law firm, she alleged that Speed Darlington was first arrested on Oct. 4, 2024 for allegedly defaming Burna Boy.

She said he was illegally detained for five days and subjected to severe torture and maltreatment without being formally charged to a court of competent jurisdiction.

Eyisi averred that the artiste was eventually granted bail by the police after spending five days under inhumane conditions.

According to her, on Nov. 27, 2024, the applicant was arrested and detained by officers of respondent on the grounds that he allegedly jumped administrative bail.

This, she said, is inspite of notification from her client about his medical emergency and his inability to report on the scheduled date and obtaining the permission of the officers of the respondent to travel to Owerri, Imo for a performance.
She said the continuous detention of Speed Darlington without arraignment contravened his constitutional rights, describing him as the “breadwinner in his family.”

  • Onion farmers link price hike, scarcity to flood, climate change

Onion farmers link price hike, scarcity to flood, climate change

The Onion Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria has explained reasons for the upsurge in the price of onions and scarcity of the produce in the country.

The National President of the Association, Mr Aliyu Isah, gave the reasons in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

NAN reports that Nigeria witnessed a soaring rise in the price of onions from the fourth quarter of 2024 with a bag selling between N250,000 and N270,000 as against N70,000 and  N90,000 per bag in previous months.

While a medium-sized bulb of the produce sells at N500 as against N50 per bulb.

Isah told NAN that the reasons for the hike in onion price were multifaceted, leading to low production of the produce.

“What caused the scarcity and high cost of onions from the last quarter of 2024 till now is as a result of the flooding.

“The flooding of 2024 that ravaged all our onion farms, from the producing bed of Sokoto, Kebbi,  Zamfara, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, up to Adamawa states resulted in the scarcity of the produce.

“We also had the problem affecting onion production with the release of water from dams from the northern states.

In  Sokoto, the water was released from Goroyo Dam, when it got to a certain level it affected the onion beds from Sokoto, Kebbi and  up to Zamfara states.

“Also, we had the breakage of dams in Borno State which destroyed our onion farmlands,” Aliyu said.

He also blamed climate change effects resulting in extended rainfall and disease outbreak on onion farms as another reason for the price surge.

“The second issue affecting scarcity and the high cost of onions is that we experienced an extended and high level of rainfall up north in 2024.

“So, the high amount of rainfall resulted in high humidity which resulted in disease outbreak popularly called Downy Mildew, which destroyed most of our onion farms at various stages of cultivation.

“Some onions farms were affected at seedling stage, some at nursery stage, some when we were even about to harvest the onion,” the association president said.

He added that the unavailability of the produce due to lack of improved onion seedlings contributed to the development.

“The third is the issue of unavailability of the produce due to lack of improved onion seedlings.
The factors of  flooding and climate change has  affected and disrupted our local seed production system.

“We do have not sufficient and quality onion seedlings, so we now rely on hybrid seed that we import from foreign countries.

“The issue of flooding really affected onion seed production so local farmers  could not get enough seed to buy. This situation also resulted in the  unavailability of onions. From the fourth quarter of 2024, and our farmers with their money, they could not see seed to buy.

“This also culminated to a serious problem where some unpatriotic Nigeria imported adulterated onion seed into the country and now our farmers are counting their losses because they planted a seed that cannot produce a bulb,” he said.

Aliyu lamented that lack of storage facilities and technology of the produce at harvests contributed to the surge in its price.

“Another contributory factor to scarcity and price surge of onions is post-harvest losses.

“That even when we harvest enough during the season because we lack improved technology of onion storage, we are being faced with more than 50 per cent post-harvest losses.

“This is to say that more than half of what we produce, we lose it after harvest. So, all these are part of the problem that is making the onions to be expensive,” Aliyu said.

Aliyu said the association was working with the Federal Government on ways to boost production and tackle the surge in the price of onions.(NAN)

Cleric dedicates Church donated by Nnaji, urges Nigerians to walk in righteousness

    By Flowerbudnews
The General Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Paul Emeka, has urged Nigerians to walk in the path of righteousness and acknowledge God in all they do to gain genuine prosperity.

Emeka, represented by Rev. Emmanuel Ngene, District Superintendent of Assemblies of God Church, gave the admonition on Sunday while dedicating a Church edifice donated to Assemblies of God Church, Ubahu in Nkanu East Local Government Area in Enugu State.

The multi-million naira church edifice was built and donated to the Church by an Enugu-born Ghana-based businessman, Chief Chukwuemeka Nnaji, who is the immediate past President of the Nigerian Union of Traders of Ghana.

The General Superintendent noted that God Almighty is interest in the prosperity and well-being of those that put their trust in Him.

According to him, God blesses without adding any sorrow attach with it; but you must be committed and have something you are doing for Him to advance His name on earth.

“Are you standing for righteousness and righteous living? Are you giving to the less privileged? Are you encouraging people to do good deeds? All these support God’s work and the way God want this earth to work.

“Nobody ever works for God genuinely in righteousness and truth; that our great God will forget but surely bless and uplift,” Emeka, who is also a professor of Theology, said.

Later, Nnaji said that he was motivated to embark on the church project to show appreciation to God Almighty for guiding his life through the Holy Bible to learn how to do business, live a focused and disciplined life-style.

According to him, the direction of the Holy Spirit, teachings of pastors and counsel of genuine Christian friends also influenced my life so much.

“Today, God is showing me, my family, Assemblies of God Church and entire Ubahu Christian community grace to expand the kingdom of God here.

“I have tasted and found out that the word of God is truth, it is applicable and do-able with clear results coming as returns,” he said.

Nnaji, who disclosed that the church project took him five years to complete, said that the edifice and other Christian yearly programmes – ‘Ubahu for Christ’ – would lead to greater freedom of Christian worship in the community.

High-point of the event was also the dedication of the newly built home-country residence of Nnaji and family in Ubahu community.
