Thousands of displaced Palestinians return to northern Gaza

GAZA,  (Xinhua) /Flowerbudnews: – Tens of thousands of Palestinians began returning to their homes in Gaza City and the northern parts of the coastal enclave on Monday after 15 months of forced displacement.

The return follows an announcement by Qatar on Sunday evening that Hamas and Israel had reached an agreement to release Israeli hostage Arbel Yehud and two others by Friday. On Saturday, Hamas is expected to release three additional hostages.

Under the agreement, Israel has permitted displaced residents to return to the northern Gaza Strip starting Monday morning.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated early Monday, “Hamas has conceded and agreed to proceed with an additional phase of hostage releases, scheduled for next Thursday following firm and determined negotiations.” The statement outlined that this phase will involve the release of Yehud, a soldier called Agam Berger, and another hostage. Additionally, three more hostages are set to be freed on Saturday as part of the agreement.

Israel has also received from Hamas a list detailing the conditions and status of all hostages to be released in the initial phase of the deal.

For many displaced families, the journey back to northern Gaza is bittersweet. While there is relief at the prospect of returning to familiar surroundings, there is also apprehension about what remains of neighborhoods now reduced to rubble.

“We have to walk about 8 kilometers on foot, but we are happy that, finally, we will be able to return to our areas, even if they are completely destroyed,” said Mohammed Hamda, a Gaza resident, while making his way along the coastal route between Gaza City and southern Gaza.

NAFDAC  Launches Audacious ”Operation Clean up Aba”, Confiscates Fake Food, Beverages Worth Over N5bn

    – Seals Cemetery Market for the Second Time in Two Years

    By Biola Lawal
In a bold move to safeguard public health, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has again sealed the Cemetery market in Aba regarded as the most dreaded haven for wines and beverages counterfeiters.

(NAFDAC DG in a tough look, issuing warning to counterfeiters – No place to hide for agents of death)

The Cemetery market is popular, dreaded and is, hitherto, the safe haven for the largest cartel ring for the manufacture of fake wines and beverages in Africa.

(Prof. Adeyeye radiating happiness at the strings of NAFDAC operational successes against fake drug peddlers, etc)

NAFDAC Director General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye disclosed this in a statement giving details of the successful enforcement operation in Aba, a copy of which was made available to FLOWERBUDNEWS.

Prof. Adeyeye said that the decisive enforcement operation was conducted on the Cemetery market as a crucial move to curb the circulation of fake and substandard wine and beverages in Nigeria.

The NAFDAC Boss noted that the current action of NAFDAC ”is the most audacious since the history of the market with specific zones barricaded with iron welding and access gates locked till date”.

Prof. Adeyeye said that the operation, which was carried out in conjunction with a large contingent of the military, DSS and Nigeria Police personnel in a rare display of inter-agency cooperation, was a follow up to a similar raid enforced in December 2023.

‘:Some of the nefarious activities of the counterfeiters included the manufacturing of all kinds of adulterated products especially different kinds of wine from a wide variety of brands.

The faked products ranged from Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins Carlo Rossi, Jenney, Chelsea London Dry Gin, Schnapp Dry Gin, McDowells and Black Labels Gordons.

    (NAFDAC Boss, the indefatigable, incorruptible)

Other counterfeited products were; Martell, Campari, Smirnoff ice, Eva Non-Alcoholic Drink, Evra Non-Alcoholic Drink, Cartel among others.

”As a consequence of the extensive operation, the agency raided over 240 shops turned factories where the harmful products were being produced and marketed,” the NAFDAC Boss disclosed.

”The shops turned factories are very filthy, using water from very unhygienic sources, harmful chemicals, saccharin, colouring, dirty recycled bottles and cloned packaging materials of other brands,” Prof. Adeyeye narrated.

”The adulteration of alcoholic beverages by criminal elements in the country is done by mixing of cheaper sources of sugar and starch besides grapes or fruit, among other harmful chemicals unsuitable for human consumption,” She stated.

    Prof. Adeyeye stated further that
over 1500 cartons of the fake and substandard products were destroyed during the operation.

”The street value of the confiscated and destroyed fake products in 2023 is estimated at over seven hundred and fifty million naira only. (N750,000,000),” She said, adding, however, that the estimated value of products mopped up during the December 15, 2024, operation is five billion naira.

(NAFDAC Operatives in action, often risking their lives to safeguard the health of Nigerians)

‘:The products being revalidated and mopped up included: Soft and carbonated drinks such as Fanta, Coca ColaSchweppes, Lacasera, Sprite, Hollandia Yoghurt, Super Commando Energy Drink, Feyrouz and Amstel Malta.

”Aside from drinks, notable fake home use beverages such as: Peak Sachet Milk, Cowbell Sachet Milk, Peak Chocolate Drink, Miksi Sachet Milk, Cadbury Chocolate Drink and Ovaltine adulterated versions,” Prof. Adeyeye disclosed.

Prior to the evacuation of the products by NAFDAC, they were being produced in the market and neatly packaged and sold to unsuspecting consumers, the NAFDAC Boss said.

    Prof. Adeyeye commended Governor Alex otti for his support saying;
”NAFDAC management appreciates the support from the Government of Abia state led by His Excellency Governor Alex Otti for his unwavering support for this project OPERATION CLEAN UP ABA”.

The Mayor of Aba south and the interim management committee of the market and other stakeholders have been working assiduously with NAFDAC on the project leading to another discovery of three major warehouses stockpiling expired HOLLANDIA YOGHURT for revalidation on the 22nd of January 2025, She said.

”NAFDAC wishes to assure the public of her determination to safeguard the health of the nation and enjoins the general public to report any suspected fake and substandard regulated product to the nearest NAFDAC office,” Prof. Adeyeye stressed.

Breaking: Court summons Iyabo Obasanjo, ex-Senator, others over Abuja property dispute

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, ordered Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo, the eldest daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to appear in court to show cause why she should not be stopped from trespassing into an Abuja landed property.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the property is located at Plot 4254, Cadastral Zone A04, measuring approximately 1.67Ha in Asokoro District, FCT, Abuja.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a ruling on an ex-parte motion moved by counsel to the plaintiffs, Abniyilo Na’allah; also ordered the former Senator representing the FCT, Philip Aduda, and five other co-defendants to appear before the court in the next adjourned date.

Other defendants named in the ex-parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/67/202 include Ismail Iron, John Mbata, Jamaila Sani Alhassan, Altine Jibrin, and unknown persons as 3rd to 7th defendants respectfully.

“A motion ex-parte for an order for interim injunction dated 13th January, 2025 and field 17th January, 2925, is moved.

“Upon studying the prayers and averments in support of the motion ex-parte and the averments in the affidavit of urgency, I am of the opinion that the prayers are not such that can be granted without hearing from the defendants.
“I hereby make an order that the plaintiffs/applicants should put the defendants on notice within seven days of this order and the defendants to show cause why the prayers sought should not be grated,” Justice Ekwo ruled.

However, the judge granted the prayer in the second ex-parte motion equally moved by Na’allah seeking for an order of substituted service of all the originating processes and other court documents on the defendants through publication in two national dailies.
Earlier, the lawyer submitted that the defendants/respondents’ addresses and occupation were not known to them at the time of filing the substantive suit which is pending before thie court.
He alleged that the defendants/respondents are always seen on Plot 4254, Cadastral Zone A04 at Asokoro in Asokoro District of Abuja.
He said services of the originating processes and all other court processes on the defendants/respondents would become very difficult and impossible since there addresses were not known to them.
The lawyer said it would occasion unnecessary delay to effect service personally on the defendants/respondents, urging the court to grant their relief.
Justice Ekwo, who directed the plaintiffs to effect the service of the processes on the defendants within seven days of the order through publication, adjourned the matter until March 6 for defendants to show cause why the interim.order should not be granted.
NAN reports that the plaintiffs; ABB Electrical Systems Limited and Chief Amb. Yohana Y.D. Margif are 1st and 2nd plaintiffs or applicants in the motion dated Jan. 13 but filed Jan. 17 by Na’allah.
The applicants sought an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants/respondents from entering, trespassing, altering or modifying the property known as Plot 4254, Cadastral Zone A04, measuring approximately 1.67Ha, Asokoro, Asokoro District FCT-Abuja belonging to the plaintiffs pending the hearing and determination of the suit
In their six-ground argument, the applicants said they were agitated with the fear of the defendants entering, trespassing, altering or modifying the property belonging to them given the alleged imminent threat made by the defendants on the land to forcefully take possession and ownership from them.
They said they are the rightful owners of the land by virtue of the statutory Right of Occupancy granted to them
“That the plaintiffs/applicants have been in quiet and peaceful possession of the land without any challenge from the defendants/respondents or anyone at all.
“It will occasion serious miscarriage of justice against the plaintiffs/applicants if the defendants/respondents are allowed to tamper with, enter, trespass, alter or modify the property belonging to the plaintiffs.
“Allowing the defendants/respondents to tamper with, enter, trespass, alter or modify the property belonging to the plaintiffs will destroy the res and render the judgment of this court nugatory,” they said.
The applicants said irreparable damage would be caused to them if the defendants were not restrained.
Chief Margif, in the affidavit he deposed to, said the company (1st plaintiff) was allocated the parcel of land by the Federal Capital Development Adminstration (FCDA) covered by a Statutory Right of Occupancy with new issued date of May 23, 2006.
He said the company intended to start developing the said land in compliance with terms contained on the statutory Right of Occupancy and other guiding rules and laws within the FCT.
He alleged that the recent activities of the defendants, including Sen. Obasanjo, who represented Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011, had become worrisome.
Margif prayed the court to grant their application in the interest of justice.

  • Prospects of aircraft manufacturing plant in Nigeria signify a boom in national economy – TDF

Prospects of aircraft manufacturing plant in Nigeria signify a boom in national economy – TDF

    By Danladi Ahmed
The plans for an aircraft manufacturing centre in Nigeria is a reflection of the conducive environment for business under the President Bola Tinubu administration.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, The Democratic Front (TDF) said the move is prompted by the new wave of investor-friendly policies put in place by government.

“We believe that the encouraging results from President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms have attracted the vast interests from investors across the globe and has triggered the plan to establish an aircraft manufacturing plant in the country.

“We consider it as courageous and remarkable against the backdrop of the fact that it was the buoyancy and strength of Nigeria’s economy 45 years ago, that attracted the investment instincts of Dornier GMBH of Germany to establish an aircraft manufacturing company in Kaduna, North Western Nigeria in 1979.

“Therefore, if a similar investment is being contemplated several years after the Dornier manufacturing facility was forced out of business by economic pressure, it then suggests that the economy under President Tinubu is on the path of fast recovery and growth. The economy has greater prospects and capacity to host and sustain a huge investment like an aircraft manufacturing hub.

“In addition to creating jobs and stimulating the economy, such a centre in Nigeria will create a boom in inflow of foreign exchange.

“Nigeria’s capability in technological transfer will also be further enhanced as it will unlock the nation’s potentials in Research and Development.

“The Democratic Front also call on the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo to expedite action on the establishment of the aircraft manufacturing centre because of its potential to foster the growth of a local supply chain, that will also benefit small businesses in Nigeria,” it added.

TDF expressed optimism that when the proposed aircraft manufacturing company is established, the Nigerian aviation sector would be transformed for the greater good of the nation.

  • Jittery Junta Leaders and Compelling Needs for ECOWAS Unity

Jittery Junta Leaders and Compelling Needs for ECOWAS Unity

    *By Paul Ejime

Ahead of the 29 January 2025 deadline for their self-imposed exit from ECOWAS, the junta leaders of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, the Alliance of Sahel States, AES, have become jittery, deploying every trick, including disinformation, misinformation and blackmail to deflect blame for the inevitable consequences and uncertainty of their military adventure.

ECOWAS leaders at their last Abuja summit in December 2024 warned the three countries that having served notice of their withdrawal from the regional bloc in January 2024, the separation will become effective 12 months later, according to the regional bloc’s relevant protocol. This is despite the grace period of six months mentioned in the summit Communique. After receiving official correspondence from the ECOWAS Commission on the summit’s decision, the juntas have gone into propaganda overdrive.

(Picture (L-R) President Tinubu, ECOWAS Chair, Junta Leaders Assimi Goita (Mali), Ibrahim Traore (Burkina Faso) & Abdourahamane Tchiani (Niger).

For context, Niger is a country that has benefitted and continues to reap from Nigeria’s generosity including infrastructural development such as the rail system, electricity supply and new road networks. When ECOWAS leaders toyed with the idea of using military force to restore constitutional order in Niger following the August 2023 military coup led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani, Nigerians were among the strongest opponents of the move arguing that seven Nigerian states shared borders and affinity with Niger.

It is therefore ludicrous for Tchiani to be accusing Nigeria of collaborating with France to destabilise Niger. In reality, the three AES countries are landlocked, and the Tchiani-led junta has fallen out with authorities in Benin Republic, a neighbouring country. In addition to their border dispute, Niger no longer has access to the Benin port for its imports and this has resulted in severe hardship in Niger, charactised by scarcity of essential goods, run-away inflation, high unemployment, a dysfunctional healthcare system and avoidable deaths in hospitals.

Instead of addressing their domestic existential threats, coupled with criticism of human rights violations and intolerance of dissent, Tchiani and his colleagues in Mali and Burkina Faso are blaming outsiders for the humanitarian crisis they brought on their people.

ECOWAS might have made a mistake by attempting to use military force on Niger without exhausting other available options. However, military rule is an aberration in today’s World and the organisation has since changed tact, using diplomacy instead, to engage its four member States under military rule, including Guinea.

Yet, the three junta leaders are unyielding. Meanwhile, the appalling security situation, one of the reasons the military rulers gave for toppling the civilian governments has not improved. Armed groups are still inflicting heavy casualties on civilians and soldiers in the three countries.

The AES juntas claim to detest France, but their countries are still members of the Francophone West African Economic and Monetary Union, UEMOA, supported by Paris. They are also still using the franc CFA currency, controlled by the French Treasury.

It is interesting that after agreeing on new national passports that will not bear the ECOWAS insignia, the junta leaders have announced that ECOWAS citizens can visit their three countries without a visa, which is consistent with the ECOWAS 1979 free movement protocol, a case of eating their cake and having it.

ECOWAS at 50 this year, cannot claim to be perfect. One of its major problems is leadership at the national and regional levels. But just as a chain is as strong as its weakest link, an organisation is only as good/effective as its weakest member.

ECOWAS evolved from the ashes of military dictatorships, however, in the last 12 years, the malaise of sit-tight syndrome, state capture, indiscriminate altering of national constitutions, election rigging, stifling of opposition and personalisation of democracy” crept in.

Critics now see the regional economic bloc once praised for its track record in conflict management and resolution as a club of self-serving leaders lacking the political will to end “political or constitutional coups,” which are as dangerous if not deadlier than military coups. But the solution is not in more coups, civilian or military. Urgent collective and deliberate measures are required to arrest the slide in the interest and benefit of community citizens in the “ECOWAS of People”.

The statement credited recently to the Togolese Foreign Minister Robert Dussey to the effect that Togo could join the AES countries, requires further interrogation since the Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe and his Senegalese counterpart Diomaye Faye are the ECOWAS envoys negotiating rapprochement with the AES group.

Is Faure running with the hare and hunting with the hound? Last year, his government carried out controversial changes to Togo’s constitution and conducted widely criticised legislative elections, believed to pave the way for his tenure elongation in violation of regional protocols. Togo has covertly offered the AES countries access to its Lome port and recently, all four countries had a joint military exercise. Could Togo’s reported plan to join the AES group, Faure’s ploy to pre-empt ECOWAS’ attempt to question his dodgy democratic credential Faure’s political ambition?

There is a strong anti-French sentiment in Francophone African countries linked to controversial colonial agreements including defence/military pacts, which the AES leaders are capitalising on for their populist dispositions. The agreements have nothing to do with ECOWAS, so it begs the question that the AES leaders are blaming the organisation for them.

To come clean of accusations of foreign influence/interference, ECOWAS must assert its independence and put its house in order but not succumb to blackmail. The organisation should innovate and reinvent itself to withstand emerging threats from the geopolitical and geostrategic shifts in international relations ecosystem.

ECOWAS leaders should be pulling together, including reaching an agreement on the term limit for the President/Prime Minister in Member States, to stop the tenure elongation syndrome haemorrhaging the organisation. They should deliver good governance and muster the political will to end political or constitutional coups and other causes/enablers of military coups.

Ghana’s new President John Mahama has named a Special Envoy to the AES countries. The Ghanaian leader should be encouraged to work within the ECOWAS system to prevent a further weakening of the organisation.

Also, Nigeria as the “big brother, regional power” and the current ECOWAS Chair, should step up to the plate and work with other leaders to champion the rescue and repositioning of ECOWAS.

Membership of a united ECOWAS provides unlimited opportunities for regional cooperation and development. ECOWAS/AES’ separation will unleash potential negative consequences on the population of the AES countries, including massive loss of jobs from the closure of Community institutions and humanitarian food reserve facilities. Also, there will be an end to the benefits of regional free trade scheme and the immediate recovery of more than US$273 million at the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) loans and liabilities.

A sudden exit from the ECOWAS Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering (GIABA), will also make the AES countries vulnerable to the global Finance Action Task-force (FATF) sanctions, plus an end to regional security cooperation, shared intelligence and coordinated joint military operations, which will make the countries easy targets for more deadly attacks by terrorist and armed insurgency groups.

Addressing the media in Abuja on Monday 27 January, the Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot urged ECOWAS to reconsider its decision on the AES group.

“It is a decision that we regret because we strongly support West African integration. Splitting does not seem to us a good idea,” said the envoy, who cited the EU’s experience with Brexit, based on negotiation and dialogue.

The junta leaders should also take a cue from the EU official’s counsel, bearing in mind that they will be held accountable for the consequences of dragging millions of their compatriots into socioeconomic catastrophe and political uncertainty.

ECOWAS is only demanding that they respect regional protocols and honour their countries’ obligations and commitment to democratic principles instead of sticking to endless opportunistic political transition programmes designed for their self-perpetuation in power.

It is within the rights of AES nations to associate or pursue common goals, but not necessarily by quitting ECOWAS. Organisations such as the Mano River Union; Lake Chad Basin Commission/Authority, the Zone of Prosperity and UEMOA, are all members of ECOWAS.
