Naja’atu: Ribadu on serious amnesia – El-rufai pulls out ‘evidence’ of NSA’s comment against Tinubu

Former Governor of Kaudna State, Nasir El-Rufai has thrown his weight behind the leader of Northern Star, Naja’atu Muhammad amid allegations against the National Security Adviser, NSA, Nuhu Ribadu.

DAILY POST reports that Mohammed had in a viral Tiktok video, claimed that Ribadu had while serving as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, discredited the virtue of President Bola Tinubu and other top politicians who are currently in the government.

He claimed that Ribadu as chairman of the anti-graft agency, vowed in 2007 that he will frustrate the then governors, Tinubu, George Akume of Benue State and Orji Kalu of Abia State.

However, the NSA in a letter on Tuesday, denied the allegation and demanded a public apology and retraction from Muhammad.

The letter addressed to Muhammad by the Lawyer of the NSA, Ahmed Raji, SAN, said Ribadu “has never maintained such a viewpoint” against any of the three politicians.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria added that “the damage occasioned to our client by your deliberate but ill-advised action is unquantifiable” and challenged Muhammad “to provide evidence of your allegations.”

Wading into the matter, El-Rufai in a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday shared a screenshot of an old newspaper that captured Mohammed’s claim.

According to El-rufai, “Nuhu must have serious amnesia”, insisting that “Najaatu’s statement is accurate”.

The former governor claimed that the “record of proceedings in the Senate will confirm that Nuhu made those statements, sometime in 2006.

“The subsequent Daily Trust report below of February 2007, reconfirms the essence of the statements.

“The conclusions of the Federal Executive Council in 2006, which can be subpoenaed from the Cabinet Secretariat of the SGF’s office contain the allegations.

“In that Special FEC meeting in which I was a member, Nuhu’s EFCC made similar presentations accusing many sitting officials, sometime in 2006.

“These Council Conclusions will further remove all doubts.

“This is for the record and to remind the morally-flexible that at some point in our national life, silence is no longer golden”.

Passport: NIS to Launch Contactless Passport Solution in Europe

    By Biola Lawal
ABUJA, (Flowerbudnews): The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) is set to launch a contactless passport application solution in Europe, with UK serving as the coordinating centre on February 7.

The NIS Comptroller General, Mrs Kemi Nanna Nandap, announced this on Tuesday when she paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission at NiDCOM headquarters in Abuja.

“This initiative, set for launch on 7th of February 2025, will enable Nigerians in the Diaspora to apply for and renew their passports online from the comfort of their homes,” she stated.

This was disclosed in a statement by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the
Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit NiDCOM, Abuja.

Nandap reiterated that the innovative solution is designed to simplify the passport application process for Diaspora, save time, and reduce costs associated with travelling to apply for passport.

She, however, said that the initiative was not for fresh applicants or minors, but for those renewing their passports.

She said Nigerians living abroad can start the process of renewing their passports a year to its expiration.

Nandap commended NIDCOM for being a dependable partner and ally in advocacy in giving awareness to its programmes and policies, especially as it affects Nigerians living abroad.

The Comptroller General said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given them the marching order to make life easier for Nigerians in the diaspora, saying the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has in the meantime approved a passport processing facility for New York, to address the backlog and bring experience there.

She added that passport front offices will soon be opened in other parts of the US and other countries.

Responding to the cheering news, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), commended the laudable initiative, which aligns with the Commission’s mandate to support and facilitate diaspora engagement.

“The launch of the contactless passport application solution in Europe is a significant step towards efficient, secure, and convenient travel document management for Nigerians in the diaspora. NiDCOM will continue to support, monitor and collaborate with the NIS to ensure the success of this initiative” she added.

She commended the Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the Comptroller General for the innovations introduced, noting that the contactless application has since taken off in Canada with commendations from Nigerians in Canada. (Flowerbudnews)

The Federal Government (FG) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) over the proposed 50 per cent hike in telecommunications tariffs.

This was contained in an MoU reached on Monday at a meeting convened by the federal government and the NLC over the proposed hike in telecom tariffs.

  • Woman jailed 5 years for trafficking lady to Italy for prostitution

Woman jailed 5 years for trafficking lady to Italy for prostitution

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, convicted and sentenced a woman, Benedicta Usen, also known as Mrs Carol Omomoh, to a five-year imprisonment without option of fine for trafficking a lady for prostitution.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment, said he found that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt in respect of each and every allegation in the eight-count charge.

Justice Ekwo consequently sentenced Omomoh to two years and six months imprisonment each in counts one, three, five and seven without an option of fine.
The judge also sentenced her in counts two, four, six and eight to five years imprisonment each without an option of fine.

He ordered that all the jail terms must run concurrently with effect from Feb 3.
Justice Ekwo observed that Omomoh’s denials in the face of her evidence-in-chief as 1st defence witness (DW1) only exposed her “as a barefaced liar, a crooked and dishonest human being.”

According to the judge, to even have the audacity to stand in court and deny the statement she made voluntarily to the police shows how depraved she is.
“The evidence also exposes her as being in the business of procuring young vulnerable women like Miss Cynthia Omoieke for prostitution abroad.
“People like the defendant must be taken out of the society for good.
“I therefore make an order convicting the defendant of the charge In counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 as charged.
“This is the order of this court,” the judge ruled.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police had, in the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/121/2019, named Omomoh as sole defendant.
In the eight-count amended charge dated Oct 24, 2022, the I-G alleged that the defendant Omomoh and Mrs Oyomiya Lamidi ‘f’ (now at large), sometime in year 2011 in Lagos, conspired between themselves to commit the offence by recruiting and transporting Miss Cynthia Loveth Ese Omoieke to Italy through the United Kingdom (UK) by means of deception and abuse of position of vulnerability.

The offence is punishable under Section 27 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration (TPPEA) Act, 2015.
In count five, she and Mrs Oyomiya Mama Lamidi ‘f’ (now at large), sometime in 2011 in Lagos, did conspired to commit an offence by organising and facilitating the foreign travel of Omoieke to Italy through the UK which travel promoted prostitution and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 27 of the TPPEA Act, 2015.
Omomoh, however, pleaded not guilty to all the counts and the prosecution called two witnesses to establish its case against her.

    –  (NBA Presidents Should Jettison Policies That Do Not Promote Welfare and Economic Empowerment of Lawyers!)

    By Sylvester Udemezue

    1. In return for the various monies the leaderships of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and their affiliates continually collect from Nigerian lawyers, Nigerian lawyers should DEMAND and INSIST on quality, accountable responsible, responsive, transparent and effective governance from the NBA leaderships Instead of waiting for and being content with FREE-NBA-SEALS as a major incentive to continue to pay the Annual Bar Practising Fee (BPF).

    2. FREE-NBA-SEAL is not a sign of responsible and effective governance but a sort of perpetuation and promotion of palliative mentality which is a major sign of ineffective governance on the part of the NBA and gullible, docile, beggarly, disoriented and fruitless followership on the part of NBA members.

    3. A CORE AIM of the NBA is ”Establishment of schemes for the promotion of the welfare, security, and economic advancement of members of the legal profession”_ (See Section 3(13) of the NBA Constitution, 2015). NBA leaderships should focus on this, instead of promoting the palliative culture that encourages poverty and laziness among lawyers .

    4. NBA leaders usually take collection of the Bar Practicing Fee (BPF) and other dues so seriously that they adopt, in each year, all manner of strategies to get lawyers to pay. By going about to appeal to lawyers to pay the BPF and Branch Dues, and by introducing the FREE-NBA-SEALS scheme as an incentive to encourage payment, NBA leaderships are subtly exposing their vested selfish interest in the monies ultimately collected from the BPF. Ordinarily, NBA leaders should have no business and no reasons “appealing” to anyone to pay BPF and dues. Members ought to pay the BPF WILLINGLY and HAPPILY if members are sure that they stand to benefit and especially considering the consequences of failure or neglect to pay. Additionally, (a) section 4 of the NBA Constitution provides that if you don’t pay BPF, you’re disqualified from practicing law in all its facets and from doing anything whatsoever that only a lawyer may do, for the rest of that year, until you pay. The same section says non payment of BPF is a form of unprofessional conduct. Why then does anyone need any FREE-NBA-SEALS as an incentive to pay? See also the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC), 2023, which makes payment of the BPF a condition precedent to engagement in law practice especially advocacy, in each year.

    5. If things were going on well within the NBA, if NBA members were happy with the NBA leaderships, if they were getting VALUE FOR THEIR MONEY by way of good, quality governance, they would happily and promptly pay BPF and any other dues. Unfortunately, there appears to be a situation of TOTAL FAILURE OF CONSIDERATION, as I have come to realize, meaning that Nigerian lawyers hardly get value for the monies they pay to the NBA. Thus about 90 percent of lawyers who pay BPF do so only because they want to be able to collect Stamp and Seal in that year which itself is required to be affixed to any document prepared by a lawyer for the purpose of authentication. In other words, most NBA members pay the BPF because NBA practically, indirectly COMPELS them to pay. Else, they might not and NBA leaderships know this, because there’s hardly anything lawyers get in return, BY WAY OF VALUE, GOOD GOVERNANCE

    6. I repeat that payment of the BPF should be done by lawyers freely and without any inducement such as the palliative FREE-NBA-SEALS that only gives unsuspecting lawyers a false impression that NBA is doing something (giving FREE-NBA-SEAL) when the FREE-NBA-SEALS scheme in itself is neither a sign of progress for the NBA nor evidence of good governance on the part of NBA leaderships.

    7. The best sign of progress is when every lawyer in Nigeria is able on his own, to apply and pay for the number of NBA seals he needs in each year; such is a sign of economic improvement as well as an improvement in the professional lives of NBA members.

    8. Four major factors should constitute the major reason why Nigerian lawyers should feel obliged to pay the Annual Bar Practising Fee: (1) The payment is statutory and mandatory; (2) Default has serious consequences, as already pointed out above. (3). The payment is the annual law practising licence renewal fee for lawyers and (4).*That Nigerian lawyers are getting value for the monies collected from them by the NBA.* Unfortunately, number (4) above, as I have explained, is almost absent leading to widespread indifference by lawyers towards prompt payment of the BPF. However, as a way out and instead of delivering good, effective governance (which should be the major motivation and the real incentive for payment of the BPF), some NBA leaderships recently devised the strategy of promising lawyers who pay their BPF before 31 March in each year, a card or two of NBA seals. The scheme was begun under the Akpata leadership (2020-2022), but it appears the current NBA leadership is not interested in continuing it, in response to which there are pockets of protests by lawyers who argue that the FREE-NBA-SEALS bonus serves as “a major incentive” for payment of the BPF. Unfortunate!

    9. Some others have suggested that the FREE-NBA-SEALS bonus, which was started by the Olumide Akpata leadership, was later stopped under the Yakubu Maikyau leadership, while some others say it was continued by the Maikyau leadership. Anyway, when the strategy started or stopped and whether it has stopped or has not stopped are not the focus of this commentary. The main focus of this commentary is that the FREE-NBA-SEALS in return for payment of the BPF is an ugly strategy that illustrates dilapidation, deterioration and retrogression.

    10. Such a palliative mentality strategy/policy ought to be discontinued forthwith while NBA leaderships should focus their attention on upholding the core essentials of good governance as identified by UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific): (1) Participation; (2) Strict adherence to the Rule of law, enthronement of fair legal frameworks that are enforced impartially, and full protection of human rights, particularly those of minorities; (3). Transparency and adherence to due process ; (4). Timely and responsible responsiveness to the challenges of the NBA and its members, so as to engender trust and Consensus oriented: Mature, reasonable, fair balancing and reconciling of the many conflicting interests and needs within the NBA; (6). Equity and inclusiveness to ensure a sense of belonging to the various interests within the the NBA; (7) Effectiveness and efficiency, ensuring a result-oriented leadership where the results are such that meet reasonable expectation. Efficiency involves sustainable use of available resources while effectiveness entails producing results that meet the needs of members and stakeholders in the NBA; (8). Accountability: NBA leaderships must be accountable to NBA members and to all stakeholders. Observance of the requirements of transparency and rule of law ensures accountability, equity, and inclusiveness.

    11. Delivery of good governance to NBA members (which is the fundamental reason the NBA leadership is installed) should be the best and the most credible motivation, incentive for NBA members’ commitment to prompt and regular payment of the BPF.

Highlighting the strategies to effectively combat the menace, Mal. Ibrahim said that a multi-stakeholder approach involving government, private sector, civil societies and individuals should be adopted.

Mallam Ibrahim, who is also a respected philanthropist, said such government-backed stakeholders should explore how to effectively utilise artisans to tackle the problem because they were the ones directly involved in using building materials

‘:By empowering artisans with skills, resources, and support, Nigeria can reduce building collapse incidents,” Mallam Ibrahim stated.

He recommended potential Short-term solutions including; ‘:Enforcement of building codes and regulations, Regular inspections and monitoring, Penalties for non-compliance, Training and certification for builders and engineers and Emergency response planning and preparedness.”

Land use planning and management; Public education and awareness campaigns and Encouraging sustainable building practice”.

”Implementing these solutions requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving government, private sector, civil society, and individuals” the Real Estate Developer reiterated.

Mallam Ibrahim noted that ”Artisans play crucial roles in preventing building collapse in Nigeria”

On Design and Construction Phase, to prevent building collapse, Mal. Ibrahim suggested ”Proper interpretation of building designs and plans; Accurate execution of construction tasks! Ensuring structural integrity and quality workmanship and Adhering to building codes and regulations.’:

He said that maintenance and Repair were also crucial to preventing building collapses and recommended ”Conducting regular maintenance checks;. Identifying and addressing structural defects.and performing repairs and renovations,” as some of steps that could help.

Mallam Ibrahim said that attention should also be paid to Specialized Artisans to ensure that quality professional jobs were done.

”Welders: Ensuring strong steel connections; Carpenters: Building sturdy roofs and floors; Electricians: Installing safe electrical systems; Plumbers: Ensuring proper water and sewage systems,” he recommended.

Mal. Ibrahim identified Challenges Faced by Artisans to include ”Lack of training and capacity building; Inadequate equipment and tools; Poor working conditions and
    Limited enforcement of building regulations.’:

To solve them, the Real Estate Developer Recommended Provision of training and capacity-building programs; Ensuring access to quality materials and equipment; Encouraging collaboration with professionals and Strengthening of regulatory frameworks and enforcement.” (Flowerbudnews)

  • BREAKING: NLC suspends nationwide protest over telecom tariff hike

BREAKING: NLC suspends nationwide protest over telecom tariff hike

    …NLC meets government representatives

    – Government had agreed to set up a larger committee to review the entire tariff structure

The Nigeria Labour Congress has suspended its planned nationwide protest against the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs approved by the Federal Government.

The labour union announced the protest last week, citing the burden the tariff increase would place on Nigerians.

However, following a meeting with government representatives at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night, the NLC resolved to halt the demonstration pending further discussions.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the government had agreed to set up a larger committee to review the entire tariff structure.

According to him, the committee will be composed of five representatives from both sides and is expected to submit its findings within two weeks.

Ajaero stated, “We emphasized that the NLC is the largest organisation in Africa, and no stakeholder consultation can exclude us and still stand.

“On that basis, they agreed to form a broader committee to ensure a fair and inclusive agreement to look at the entire tariff structure as a model to come out with a realistic and all-inclusive agreement.

“So the committee will be made up of five representatives, from both sides and expected to come out with a result after two weeks.

“That will determine the next line of action and the process of engagement. The symbolic action of submitting the letters tomorrow will be put on hold until the outcome of such a committee.

“The outcome of such a committee is what will determine our next line of action in terms of protest, in terms of boycott, and in terms of even withdrawal of services, which are the three issues we put online.”

He added that the union’s next steps, including protests, boycotts, or service withdrawals, would depend on the outcome of the committee’s work.
