Also, Akpata said that he would continue to lay solid foundation for cricket in Nigeria.

  • Update: Court to rule on Nnamdi Kanu’s bail plea, preliminary objection March 19

Update: Court to rule on Nnamdi Kanu’s bail plea, preliminary objection March 19

    Flowerbudnews

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, fixed March 19 for ruling on the bail application filed by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Justice Binta Nyako will, also on the same date, rule on a notice of preliminary objection filed by Kanu praying the court not to allow his trial until certain conditions were met by the Federal Government.

Justice Nyako fixed the date after the new counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, and Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the motions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the IPOB leader was initially standing trial on a 15-count charge bordering on terrorism offences before eight of the counts were quashed by the trial judge leaving seven counts, and the Supreme Court, on Dec. 15, 2023, affirmed the lower court decision.

When the matter was called on Monday, Awomolo told Justice Nyako that the case was coming up for hearing after the decision of the Supreme Court on Dec. 15, 2023.

Awomolo said the apex court affirmed Nyako’s decision of April 8, 2022, by preserving counts one, two, three, four, five, eight and 15 of the charge which Kanu pleaded not guilty of.

The senior lawyer said that the Supreme Court ordered the continuation of trial of Kanu on the remaining seven counts.

“So we are ready to proceed with the hearing of this matter and it is in the defendant’s interest and everybody’s interest in this country to see to the end of the trial” he said.

But Counsel to Kanu, Ejimakor, told the court that he had two motions; an application for bail and a preliminary objection.

He said though he agreed that the Supreme Court directed the continuation of Kanu’s trial, they were not ready to continue the proceedings.

He urged the court to take his client’s bail application and preliminary objection for court to decide whichever way, and the prosecution did not object.

While given grounds why the bail plea should be granted, Ejimakor said Kanu currently suffered from life-threatening and serious health conditions.

According to the lawyer, Kanu has heart disease, hypertension and dangerous potassium levels that pose daily risks to his life while in detention.

He argued that the DSS had no standard medical facility that could treat the defendant but was only subjected to cell-grade medical treatment, which did not abate his conduction but instead worsened it.

He urged the court to grant the bail request on most liberal terms to enable the IPOB leader seek better medical care he urgently requires.

He said though Section 161 of Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015, raised three conditions for bail to be satisfied, Kanu had met those terms, including ill-health, delayed proceedings and not being given adequate time and facilities to prepare for his defence.

Ejimakor alleged that the prosecution, since Kanu’s arrest and arraignment, had delayed the proceedings for several months through amendment of charges and adjournments

He also argued that he might not be able to put up a good defence unless Kanu was admitted to bail to have unfettered access to his lawyers.

Contrary to the prosecution’s counter affidavit that Kanu jumped bail, the lawyer argued that Kanu only fled for his dear life when his residence was attacked by security agents and that as far back as October 2018, he deposed to an affidavit to explain the circumstances.

But Awomolo disagreed with Ejimakor, insisting that the defendant violated the bail conditions, jumped bail and fled the country,.

He said there was no evidence before the court that if granted another bail, he would not jumped bail, urging the court to dismiss the application.

The senior lawyer said Kanu’s failure to prove that there was no standard medical facility in Department of State Service (DSS)’ detention contradicted Section 161(2a) of ACJA.

“So he has not been able to satisfied Section 161(2a),”:he said.

He argued that the IPOB leader had not tendered anything tangible or extraordinary to show he was entitled to bail.

On the delayed proceedings, Awomolo said the court itself observed that both parties were responsible.

The lawyer, who argued that the Supreme Court had settled issues about Kanu’s rendition, said other judgments in favour of the IPOB leader were only persuasive, and not binding on Justice Nyako.

On the preliminary objection, Ejimakor said the application prayed for an order that before any proceeding could commence in the trial, the Federal Government must cease and desist from certain conducts.

He said these include seizure of documents of his lawyers, stopping his lawyers from taking notes during visitation, and eavesdropping on Kanu’s consultation with lawyers on matters pertaining to his defence,

He also sought an alternative order that before commencement of trial, a non-custodial arrangement be made so as to afford Kanu adequate time and facilities to prepare for his defence.

But Awomolo, who opposed the application, described it as an abuse of court process.

He argued that a party cannot dictate to court how to conduct its proceedings.

He said it was an insult to the court for a party to dictate that unless the detaining authority acts in certain ways, trial should not commence.

The lawyer, who said that the prosecution had never breached the fundamental rights of the IPOB leader, urged the court to dismiss the application.

Justice Nyako adjourned the matter until March 19 for ruling and trial commencement for March 20.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng) / Flowerbudnews

  • Anyaso re-elected as Chairman IPMAN Enugu Unit, vows to tackle over taxation

Anyaso re-elected as Chairman IPMAN Enugu Unit, vows to tackle over taxation

    By Flowerbudnews
Mr Chinedu Anyaso, Managing Director of Floxy Alu Oil Ltd, has been re-elected by members of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) Enugu Unit as their chairman for the next three years.

Anyaso and his entire executive members were re-elected after a unanimous unopposed vote by the entire members in an election that took place in IPMAN House in Enugu.

In his acceptance speech, Anyaso appreciated members of the association for the confidence and trust repose on him and his entire executive to be re-elected and returned, adding: “My executive is first ever to enjoy this great privilege”.

Anyaso noted that the members of IPMAN had been a great pillar of support in the past three years in office, making it possible for  the association to achieve some milestones.

According to him, the re-election is a call for more responsibility on our own part and to see that we ameliorate difficulties our members are facing in their businesses.

He said: “Since the removal of the fuel subsidy, our members have continued to find it difficult to survive the harsh business environment confronting all business concerns in the country.

“Even as we are struggling to keep business afloat and retain our workers, a state government in its quest to surge-up its internal revenue has come so hard on our individual members and their business outfits.

“This latest development also undermines agreement with various state governments that IPMAN would be paying a collective tax to the various state governments to ensure all member pay and check issues of over or multiple taxation.

“This is highly prevalent in Anambra State, where after we had an agreement with the state government; you still see ASWAMA, signage officials, even Ocha Brigade officials coming to demand money, arrest and detain our members and their workers.”

Anyaso said that the over taxation issue in Anambra might lead to its members down tooling and shutting down fuel selling operations in the state within the next two weeks.

He said: “All efforts to call the attention of the Anambra State Government on the issue have proved abortive and not yielded any fruit.

“Recently, some of our members having businesses in Anambra State were taken to court and jailed or given the option of fines due to their refusal to comply with illegal and over taxation,” he said.

The re-elected chairman also assured of furnishing the IPMAN House, adding: “Within the next six months, this house will be well furnished and the sweat you are experiencing today will never be again.”

Anyaso applauded Ebonyi and Enugu State Governments for cooperating and supporting IPMAN members and their activities as well as state governments of some parts of Imo, Abia, Kogi and Cross River States their members operate as well.

Earlier, Mr Pius Onyeka, Chairman of Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Petroleum Matters, commended IPMAN for a very peaceful election, adding: “I will be glad if elections in Nigeria will go this very peaceful way”.

Onyeka assured that the House would continue to work cordially with IPMAN members to ensure availability of fuel in the state for the overall benefit of the good people of the state.

Speaking, the Grand Patron of IPMAN Enugu Unit, Chief Joseph Ezeokafor, also lauded IPMAN for working in unison and ensuring steady growth of the association within various states it covers.

“As you people are progressive; I will continue to support IPMAN; and do not fail to call on me if there is any difficulty you are facing for counsel and guidance,” Ezeokafor, Founder of JEZCO Nigeria Ltd, said.

Others re-elected included: Mr Ndubuisi Nwokwu as Vice Chairman; Mr Nnaemeka Iloafor as Secretary; Mr Ndubuisi Egbogota as Assistant Secretary; Emeka Onyima, as Treasurer and Mr Obinna Njoku as Financial Secretary.

Others are: Mr Isaiah Mbah as PRO; Mr Abdullahi Salami as Auditor; Chief Clement Nnamchi as Legal Adviser and Chief Austine Nkama as Ex-official. (Flowerbudnews)

  • AFCON 2023: Super Eagles clear favourites against Bafana Bafana

AFCON 2023: Super Eagles clear favourites against Bafana Bafana

     Flowerbudnews

With their defence breached only once after five matches in this tournament, and considering their vast superiority in the record of previous encounters, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have the favourite tag going into Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations semi-final against South Africa in Bouake.

Wednesday’s game will be the 15th clash between both countries at full international level. Nigeria have won seven of the previous 14 matches, with five of those matches drawn and two won by South Africa.

Apart from having to deal with the incredible energy, effervescence and pace of Africa Player of the Year Victor Osimhen, another major problem that the Bafana Bafana will be up against early, in-game and at the latter stages is the intractability of wing-terrors Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon.

MEN AGAINST BOYS – Osimhen, Bassey, Ekong and Ajayi are fully focused

Lookman, with three goals in the tournament so far (all coming in the knockout rounds), plus assisting Osimhen to score the equalizer against Equatorial Guinea, and Simon (with two assists) can be fleeting and entirely unpredictable for any defence, with both switching wings at will.

A stingy rearguard, marshalled by on-field captain William Ekong, has been able to provide all the answers to a number of tricky questions by the opposition in their last four matches, and looks as solid as the Berlin Wall at the height of its glory.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who plays his club football in South Africa, and who was thrown into the forefront as number one at this competition despite only one previous cap, said he would have a sweet day stopping all efforts by the Bafana Bafana and then seeing them shunted to the third-place match.

“I know them and they know me. It will be an interesting evening in Bouake.”

NO GREE – Calvin Bassey stops an Angolan player.

Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi and Olaoluwa Aina are the other pegs in that rearguard, and the attack-minded Aina offers even more problems for the 1996 champions.

Ranked 42nd in the world and 12th in Africa (as against South Africa’s global ranking of 66th and 12th in the world), the Super Eagles are unbeaten in 10 competitive matches over the past 10 months, and even achieved a rare win in a friendly game when they edged Mozambique in Portugal in October 2023.

As far as the Africa Cup of Nations go, Nigeria is aiming for a fourth star on its crest, while the Bafana (Boys) are only aiming for a second triumph, following their win on home soil 28 years ago. Even that win has always been downplayed by Nigerians as it happened in the absence of Cup holders Nigeria, who were stopped from travelling to the Rainbow Nation by military strongman Sani Abacha following a spat with President Nelson Mandela over the execution of environmental rights activist Ken Saro Wiwa and some others in November 1995.

BRING THEM ON – Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali

The first meeting between both countries was on 10th October 1992, when Richard Owubokiri opened the floodgates of goals in a 4-0 win for Nigeria at the National Stadium, Lagos. Rashidi Yekini scored a brace. It was a 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying match. The return leg at the FBN Stadium in Johannesburg ended scoreless.

Nigeria spanked South Africa 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2000 AFCON they co-hosted with Ghana, with Tijani Babangida scoring both goals, and four years later, an Eagles’ team wounded by Morocco in its first match descended heavily on the Bafana, beating the latter 4-0 in a group phase match in Monastir, Tunisia.

Four years ago, in the AFCON quarter-finals, the Eagles edged the Bafana 2-1 in Cairo, with the goals scored by Samuel Chukwueze and William Ekong. Both players will be in Bouake with Ekong to lead the squad on the field and Chukwueze likely to play some part in the proceedings.

  • FCT-IRS Demands Achimugu’s Tax Returns After Lavish Birthday Psrty

FCT-IRS Demands Achimugu’s Tax Returns After Lavish Birthday Psrty

    Culled from Opera Newsl

The birthday fete was reportedly attended by high-profile names including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Following her lavish birthday party some days ago, the FCT-Internal Revenue Service has asked Abuja-based socialite, Aisha Achimugu, to provide details of her annual tax returns to the agency.

The demand was made in a now-deleted post on its official X (formerly Twitter) platform by the FCT-IRS.

It said, “The FCT-Internal Revenue Service extends our warmest birthday wishes to you!

“May this special day be filled with joy and blessing. Remember to fulfill your tax obligations by filing your annual tax returns.’’

The move by the tax agency came on the heels of viral reports of how Achimugu partied with friends and cronies on the Caribbean island of Grenada to mark her 50th birthday.

A dedicated website for the seven-day birthday party included information regarding visa arrangements, available chauffeurs, travel schedules, and the nearest airport to the event venue, among other details for the guests.

The birthday fete was reportedly attended by high-profile names including the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

However, the governor, in a statement countered claims that his visit to the Caribbean island was to party with Achimugu and her cronies.

The Lagos State Government released photos of Sanwo-Olu in Grenada presenting a miniature of the Blue Line train to Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Michelle.

The government, on its X handle, said the presentation was made after talks on bilateral relations between Grenada and Lagos State in St. George at the weekend.

It said, “The two leaders exchanged ideas on tourism, agriculture and other economic interests. Mr Sanwo-Olu also attended some social engagements during his visit. Michelle spoke about Granada’s 50th anniversary coming up in February.”

Achimugu’s guests were reported to have camped at Calivigny Island, an 80-acre private and exquisite location that costs about $132,000 per night.

Those familiar with the event alleged organisers rented the Island for seven days, amounting to about $924,000 in total, in addition to other charges.

The festivities commenced on 16 January with the arrival of guests. It ended on January 23 with an all-white breakfast culminating in a luxurious dinner-themed ‘glitz and glam’ before guests bid farewell to Grenada.

While responding to the media buzz which surrounded the event, Achimugu, who is the Managing Director of Abuja-based Felak Concept Group described herself as the most popular person in the world.

In a statement, the socialite insisted that she was not apologetic about how she celebrated her birth anniversary and that Nigerians should ‘expect more.’

She said, “Good evening, everyone, lovers of mine. This is not an official thank you for being there for me and coming to Grenada. It is a very tough time. It was a moment for me to thank everyone whom I should be concerned over the pleasant media help about this famous Aisha.

“And I want to congratulate myself for being the most popular person in the entire world, apart from the Gaza and Israeli fight, I guess something that’s most popular on the news globally. I give God the glory, and I thank God for my life. And for those who have genuinely shown concern over the media, I want to assure you that I’m well, I’m in a high spirit.

“I really don’t give a hoot. I’m doing me; I’ve always done me, a happy soul, doing what makes me happy. And again, celebrating people who love me, genuinely love me, who have always been there for me in the last 50 years and even less, but feels like they’ve known me all my life. I thank you all.”

  • Inkblot Dominates Prime Video, Nigeria’s Most-Watched Movies of 2023

Inkblot Dominates Prime Video, Nigeria’s Most-Watched Movies of 2023

    By Biola Lawal
Abuja ( Flowerbudnews): Four titles from Inkblot Productions reigned supreme on the streaming data released by Shock, showing Amazon Prime Video’s top 30 most popular movies of 2023.

The exciting news was made available to Flowerbudnews by Glazia Magazine, ”the leading lifestyle hub for modern readers’: a Magazine edited by Omawumi Ogbe.

The top 30 list includes both Nollywood and Hollywood films that resonated with Nigerian
audiences throughout the year, and Inkblot had the most representation with four movies –
Palava, Love in a Pandemic, The Blood Covenant and The Set Up 2 – making the list of most streamed movies.

A feat no other studio could pull off in a very competitive year.

According to Shock, the data represents 99% of all viewing on the streamer during that time.
Although the year-long report opened the floodgates to a wealth of information that will give more insight into how Nigerian viewers use the streaming service,

Shock has been tracking and divulging numbers monthly, and Palava and Love in a Pandemic have been prominent fixtures on their lists for a long time.

Furthermore, Inkblot titles such as Big Love and No Way Through dominated the lists in Quarter 4 but didn’t quite make the final list due to the December 2023 cutoff.

“This is interesting. It goes to show how Inkblot has been able to blend the consumerism and
appeal of Prime Video audiences,” said Akintunde Damilare, co-founder of Shock.

“They have also scaled up their operations and been able to meet the demands and preferences of Nigeria’s Prime Video subscribers.

Akintunde further mentioned that the list is also used as a metric of the top 10 from Flix Patrol.

“It also means that at a various point of the year, you had an Inkblot title on the Top 10 table at a particular point of the day, week or month throughout 2023, which is a very good signal that the stories from Inkblot are getting better and are now being acknowledged by the consumers.”

the film added. Heist drama “Brotherhood” topped the chart, followed closely by Femi Adebayo’s “King of Thieves” and Funke Akindele’s “Battle on Buka Street”.

For Inkblot, “Palava” and “Love In Pandemic” reigned in the top 10.

Inkblot’s numbers come as no surprise, as the production house accounted for 2023’s critically acclaimed titles, beloved among audiences and movie critics.

It also highlights the importance of a strong and diverse film slate, as well as strategic release planning. With Inkblot’s continued success and determination to blaze the trail in impactful storytelling and blockbusters,
moviegoers can expect exciting offerings in the coming years.

When asked to respond to this story, Inkblot highlighted its notable presence in the top 30
movies despite the stiff competition and the harsh economic realities. In the words of Inkblot

Co-founder Damola Ademola, “We are thrilled to have seen our titles heavily present in this list.
Our diverse lineup of films resonated with audiences, and we are grateful for their continued support.

This achievement is thanks to the hard work and talent of our partners, cast, and crew.

Our focus has always been on providing memorable and impactful storytelling, and we will continue to do so in the future,” he added.

Meanwhile, in what was a rude shock to movie lovers on the continent, Amazon recently
announced it was cutting funding to Africa and the Middle East, stating that it was part of a
restructure to prioritize its resources “on what matters most to customers.”

With this development, will local production companies across the MEA including Inkblot
Productions, whose three-year deal with Amazon was due to run out in 2024, need to seek out other streaming partners or will the high demand for Nollywood content see Amazon Prime continue to license such titles for the foreseeable future? (Flowerbudnews)

  • Women, hairstylists lament over high cost of hair attachments

Women, hairstylists lament over high cost of hair attachments

    By Taiye Olayemi

Some women and hairstylists on Tuesday lamented the high cost of hair attachments as the price has continued to soar from 2023.

They expressed their concern in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

NAN reports that hair attachment is one of the most important part of a woman’s fashion and the price in Nigeria depends on the quality and brand.

There are various types of hair attachments based on the company of production like: X-pression, Darling and Lush.

These attachments could be used to make styles like ghana weaving, bob marley, twisting, shuku, knotless braid, pick and drop, and more.

Average hair attachments initially sold for N1,700 now cost N3,600, and those sold for N1,200 now go for N2,500.

Hair cream and relaxers are not also left out as the biggest jar of hair cream that was sold for N800 now costs N3,000 as well as other smaller ones.

Faith Omije, a hairstylist at Crystal Beauty Salon said, “the situation must be urgently addressed, else the increment would continue without control”.

Omijie said the development now warranted a reduction in her normal service charge for hairdo when customers purchased hair attachments from her, as a way of encouraging them.

“The manufacturers keep telling us their cost of production has increased which warranted the increase in the cost of hair attachments but for me, this is not tenable.

“It appears they are only being inconsiderate when we look at the rate of the increment.

“From 2023, the price keeps adding up with N100, N200 till it is now unbearable. My customers are always complaining.

“In a way to encourage them, I reduce my service charge which is also affecting me.

“Even the price of hair cream, hair relaxers and wool are on the increase too. Before now, I sell a bundle of single wool for N200 but it is now N300,” she said.

Another hairstylist, Grace Akpan, said the government must be able to ensure measures were put in place for general price control of items in the market.

Akpan said the most unfortunate thing about the development was “that nobody is currently addressing the problem, women now have to spend a fortune or engage in critical thinking before making their hair”.

“Many of my customers now run away from making hairstyles that will make them use hair attachments.

“They rather go for weave-on and wool because they are not as expensive as hair attachments, just few of them are using it now.

“This development has also impacted the cost of braided wigs,” she said

Similarly, Helen Arokoyo, an undergraduate student of University of Lagos said “Now, I hardly make my desired hairstyle, I go for what my money can make.

“I’m the type that likes my hair very full but I can’t afford to buy enough attachment to do that.

“The option of reusing my attachment is out of consideration for me because the hair won’t be as neat and beautiful as it should be when new attachment is used.

“It is indeed a frustrating one for me because I don’t like wools and weave-on. So, I’m only left with the option of using the hair attachments,” she said.

Aminat Usman, a pharmacy sales representative told NAN that she had temporarily resolved to weaving her hair in different styles pending when the price of hair attachments would be regulated.

“I don’t want to give myself problems, I will continue to weave my hair like this.

“And maybe when I am fortunate to get awoof money, I can consider buying attachments but not with the meagre sum I’m earning now,” she said.

Caroline Olatunji, a photographer said, “Each time I buy hair attachment to make my hair, I’m always pained due to the amount of money I will have to part with.

“Before now, I can make my hair with N5,000 but now I spend close to N10,000.

“I have considered barbing my hair but it is also expensive when I think of the the cost of maintenance and treatment. The situation is really frustrating,” (NAN) (nannews.ng)
