The second edition of the Akeem Atilola Basketball Clinic on Wednesday kicked-off with 105 participants at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Akeem Atilola, a former Oyo State basketball player and organiser, said that the maiden edition held last year was born out of the desire to motivate the young players in the state.

Atilola said that his generation had missed out on motivations, clinics, and competitions.

“We didn’t get people or groups of people to motivate and gear us up in our time. We, in our generation, were just fortunate, and God helped us to soar high.

“I don’t want this younger generation to miss out on what we missed out on. This is to motivate them and give them hope that they can be and achieve whatever they set their hearts to achieve,” he said.

40 girls and 65 boys, comprising elite players and U-15, are participating in the game.

“In this edition, we worked with some colleges in the United States to check out the campers and see if they could meet up their standard and get scholarships.

“Due to some circumstances, the coach couldn’t make it down; but we would be sharing video clips of the participants with them to look inwardly, and hopefully, we can have a few lucky ones.

“I would ensure that anyone picked is successfully taken. Back then, someone invested in me; that’s why I am who I am today,” he said.

The ex-player said he was giving back to the society, “thus giving a win-win situation and further expending the cycle.

“The clinic is not a competition but an avenue to showcase skills.

“It is designed to equip aspiring players with skills, discipline, and exposure needed to excel in basketball and beyond and change their story,” he said.

Better Hospital Resources Can Stem Medical Practitioners’ Exodus – Olamitoye.

The founder of Ibadan Central Hospital, Dr Abib Olamitoye has said that providing adequate equipment and resources in Nigerian hospitals can help reduce the emigration of medical practitioners.

He stated this in Ibadan, at the 40th anniversary of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, MBBS, and Bachelor of Dental Surgery, BDS, graduating class of 1985 College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, U.I.

Dr. Olamitoye who is also the Chairman of the MBBS & BDS Class of 1985 40th anniversary and reunion local organising committee, cited financial struggles as a major reason for doctors emigrating.

He noted that inadequate equipment and resources in Nigerian hospitals hinder quality diagnosis and patient care.

“People want better life, the origin is poor economy poorly managed financial resources, and they are needed elsewhere where they can be able to have compensation for the years and pains they have had.

“When you come out as a medical practitioner, you need quality equipment and this can only be rendered by a self responsible government, when this instrument are not available you cannot make quality diagnosis.

“This is another reason why people would rather go abroad where this facility are available so that the call to duty we have bearing or meaning,” Olamitoye said

While speaking to journalists, the keynote speaker at the event, Dr Tony Rapu, challenged medical students to maximize different seasons of life, cultivate resilience, and be bold in the face of challenges.

“In the morning of your life cultivate resilience, be strong, be enduring, be bold, be courageous and stand through.

“There is nothing we can do about people who want to find purpose beyond the shores of this country.

“We are not all called to travel, some are called to stay in this environment, endure the challenges and use those challenges as opportunities to make an impact,” Rapu said.

Earlier, in his address, Chief Medical Director, UCH, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, represented by Chairman Medical and Advisory Committee, Prof Olabukola Adesina, commended the class for their dedication to the noble profession of healing and serving humanity.

“I commend this class for its dedication to the noble of profession of healing and serving humanity.

“Your contributions to healthcare are undoubtedly improved the life’s if countless individuals.

2025 Eid-el-Kabir: Makinde advocates single term of 6 years for president, governors.

    By Adewale Owoade

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has advocated a single term of five or six years for elected political office holders across all levels of government in Nigeria, as against the current double term of four years each.

The governor stated this on Friday, when Muslim faithful, including clerics, traditional rulers and political office holders paid a visit to his Ikolaba, Ibadan residence, shortly after the Eid-el-Kabir prayers, held at the Eid Ground, Agodi, Ibadan.

The delegation, led by the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, included the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Senator Rashidi Ladoja; former Deputy Governor and PDP Deputy National Chairman, Amb. Taofeek Arapaja; former deputy governors, Barr Hazeem Gbolarumi and Engr Hamid Gbadamosi; member representing Ibadan North-East/South-East Federal Constituency, Hon. Abass Adigun Agboworin; and Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Dawodu Makanjuola.

Addressing the delegation, Governor Makinde congratulated the Muslim faithful on witnessing the year 2025 Eid-el-Kabir and thanked them for their prayers and commitment to the state as well as their unflinching support for him and his government over the past six years, urging them to continue praying for the success of his administration.

He noted that a single term of five or six years is enough for any government to focus and serve the people and deliver on its mandate, calling for a constitutional amendment to effect this.

Governor Makinde said, “First, let me use this opportunity to say Barka Da Sallah to our Muslim faithful and we shall have the opportunity to celebrate many more by the grace of God.

“I was just looking at the trajectory for me in government. I have spent six years already and due to no fault of anybody, we lost the year 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We lost almost one year, campaigning all over the place for the second tenure. Now, people have started distracting us on what I want to do next and all of that. So, I feel that, effectively, the time we can say we are very serious with governance is just about five out of the eight years.

“That is why I feel if you remove all these distractions, a single tenure of five or six years is actually enough to focus and do the work that we are trying to do in eight years.

“Well, we shouldn’t be afraid to say the fact based on data that is available to us. It has nothing to do with me. If they say I should end it, so be it.

“So, I am just calling the attention of our people to this because it is a constitutional issue. We should start looking at it. I know that it has been brought to the attention of the National Assembly but, quite frankly, it is a model that should work for this country.”

Delivering the message of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Ladoja called for more support for the government and prayed for more success and achievements for Governor Makinde’s administration.

While speaking with newsmen after the Eid prayer, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barr. Lawal, urged the Muslim Ummah to always exhibit the valuable lessons of obedience, trust and true sacrifice to the will of God, which are the doctrines and lessons taught by the Holy Quran.

He thanked the Governor for his commitment to the welfare of workers and the people of Oyo State through prompt payment of salaries and called for more cooperation from the people of the state so that dividends of democracy would further be delivered.

While offering special prayers for Governor Makinde, Professor Kamil Oloso, prayed for more successes for the administration. He also expressed the appreciation of the Muslim community in the state to the governor for his unwavering support.

Also in the delegation that visited the governor were the Deputy Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Fadeyi; PDP State Secretary, Alhaji Wasiu Adeleke; Oloye Nureni Akanbi, commissioners, chairmen and chairpersons of local government areas as well as other government functionaries.

    By Adewale Owoade

A former Member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Shina Peller, says Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has shown the quality of a good leader.

Peller, who represented Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola Federal Constituency, said this at a lecture in honour of Makinde.

The lecture, themed “Pacesetting in Changing Times: The Dynamics of Quality Governance,” was organised by the Federation of Oyo State Students’ Union (FOSSU) at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan.

He said effective governance should prioritise youth leadership, mobilisation and citizenship to meet the demands of a progressive society.

“The best governor in the history of Oyo State, one of the performing governors in Nigeria—using him as a case study at this event is very important because he has demonstrated the quality of a good leader who is giving us quality governance in Oyo State.

“I let people understand that change is the most constant thing. We are not in heaven where everything is perfect. In this world, we will continue to face challenges and it is not enough for us to merely survive.

“We need leaders that are innovative, inspirational and transformative—leaders who understand our challenges and opportunities, empower us, and create a better system,” Peller said.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Administration, Kunle Sanni, attributed Makinde’s achievements to his dynamic leadership.

“By every standard, our governor is a dynamic leader, as he has continued to impact positively on the lives of the people of Oyo State.

“His dynamism is recognised beyond the shores of Oyo State. Nigeria has recognised him. His colleagues in the Governors’ Forum have acknowledged it and made him the Vice Chairman of the Forum.

“People are even beckoning on him that it is time for him to come to Abuja and continue his good work—probably after completing his tenure in Oyo State.”

Also in his welcome address, the President of FOSSU, Comrade Ibrahim Alarape, commended Makinde for supporting students’ welfare.

He urged the governor to build institutions that would sustain his projects over time.

“Let us use this platform to appreciate the governor’s commitment to the welfare of the people of Oyo State.

“We are grateful for his visionary leadership, his dedication to empowering youths, and for promoting development in our great state.”(NAN)

Lupus Day: Lupus Warriors NG sensitises, gives cash to patients

    By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

To celebrate the 2025 World Lupus Day, a non-governmental organisation, Lupus Warriors NG on Saturday organised a walk, sensitisation and free medication for the Lupus patients, to celebrate the day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no fewer than 100 Lupus patients were given free medications and money.

Miss Olatomiwa Ogunwomoju, the founder Lupus Warriors NG said that the significance of today’s awareness is to let people know more about the disease called Lupus.

Ogunwomoju said that knowing that early diagnosis can help you to manage the disease properly and live a meaningful life even if you are living with Lupus.

“Every May 10, we celebrate World Lupus Day, lupus is an auto immune disease, where your immune system attacks your body and the heathy tissue in your body and that can affect any part of your body.

“We are celebrating every Lupus warrior, people living with lupus. We are creating awareness so that people can know more about the disease and also help to spread the word.

“We gave money to lupus patients and free prescriptions to people who are living with the disease.

“Lupus is an auto immune disease, and it’s a disease that I’ve been living with for the last seven years, it will be eight years by December.

“When I got diagnized with lupus it affected my sight, I was blind for over a year and I’m still partially sighted.

“I still can’t see very well, it is very challenging, living with an awful condition and even with medication, hospital visits, it can be a lot with lupus, you have very high and low days but the most important thing is that I try to take my medication and stay positive.

“The finances can be very challenging, and that is the reason why I gave out free medication because the medication is not cheap and have I been able to manage.

“ It has been God and I know there are a lot of lupus patients out there that are finding it difficult to get their medications and be able to look after themselves properly.

“This is why we are trying to create this awareness so that people can support and lupus patients to live a meaningful life,” she said.

Ogunwomoju, however, appealed to the government at all level to do more on the awareness and work with rheumatologist in all the hospitals across Nigeria to make medications free.

“Most patients of this disease already have a disability because they have lupus.

“It would have affected their eyes, legs, or their hands, and it’s difficult to earn money as I can no longer do a 9-5 job because of my eyesight,” she said.

Dr Ibukunoluwa Dedeke, consultant rheumatologist University College Hospital (UCH) said that Lupus is a short for Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

Dude said that it’s an autoimmune disease in which the immune system of a particular individual rather than just protecting them from infection, but some of it starts attacking the cells of the body.

“ The immune system of the human body are highly trained to recognize the body cells so that they don’t attack it and to also identify foreign cells and destroy it and they too are toxic cells that when activated destroy whatever they come across.

“ We now have some of them failing to recognize the body as self and attack it. The prevalence of lupus in Oyo state is around 0.5 percent, and it’s common in females far than the males .

“The symptoms of Lupus at the early stage are easily mistaken for another disease and the common diseases that people think they have are malaria and thyroid.

“The pattern is that they notice this week they treat malaria and two weeks after they treat thyroid and that they are treating malaria that isn’t going and that should cause a red flag, that you’re treating something and the drug you’re using is not working that means you’re not treating what you think you’re treating.

“ People make the error that it’s resistant malaria, and that’s why we always advise that the commonest sign of Lupus are fatigue, joint pain, low grade fever , some will have rashes .

“In fact the people that have rash are a bit fortunate because they notice that this is not just malaria and they come on time.

“ Lupus can simmer for months or even years before they are diagnosed. This awareness is to make people know that there’s a disease called lupus that starts off with simple symptoms but is very serious.

“Our best best at controlling Lupus is early diagnosis because if the lupus activity in the body continues, it can lead to irreversible organ damage, especially the kidney,” he said.

Dedeke said that Infact Lupus is one condition that can affect any organ system of the body, but the vital organs are crucial.

“ The vital organs are those that you can’t do without. This is why when lupus patients come late with irreversible change would need renal transplant.

“Lupus is not a death sentence. One of the challenges of treating Lupus is the side effect of some of the drugs; the rheumatologist is trained to monitor this and to prevent this as they treat.

“When you’re not treated by a specialist, the adverse effects are higher because there are standards that we use to monitor the care of our patients to reduce those adverse.

“On average , lupus patients need close to N100,000 monthly for medication, and that’s because of the fall in the dollar to naira.

“We also have the challenge of availability of these mediations but with further spread of awareness on Lupus we hope that pharmaceutical companies too will begin to bring them in because a lot of people don’t know about the drugs.

“When they see them, they say they’re cancer drugs we don’t need them, no we use them for lupus at lower safer dose to control patients with autoimmune diseases,” he said.

The consultant said that the Nigeria Society of Rheumatologist have implemented moves to include autoimmune medications into essential drug list.

Dedeke said that some have made it to the list and we are hoping that more will be added .

“We hope that with this kind of awareness, the government will know that there are citizens who have this condition, and this needs and expedite the inclusion in the essential drug list,”he said.

A lupus patient and beneficiary, Titilayo Adigun, 16- year old said it has been difficult for her since she got diagnosed with the disease.

“I was in JSS 3 when I was diagnosed with lupus disease. I can recall that after our examination, I was having a sharp pain, and I started bleeding, I thought it was stress but after series of test, I was diagnosed with lupus.

“Being a lupus patient, life has been stressful but after sometime, it has become more normal and the drugs has become normal.

“Before, I could take between 20 to 30 pills in a day, but now it has reduced to between five to 10 daily,” she said. (NAN) www.nannews.ng

Speakers’ conference seek urgent, coordinated action to end renewed terrorists attacks

    By Oluwaseyi Oduneye-Ogunwomoju

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (CSSLN)has called for urgent and coordinated action by Federal and State Governments to end the renewed terrorist attacks across the country.

The CSSLN made the call in a statement issued by its Chairman, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin.

The CSSLN strongly condemned the recent wave of brutal terrorist attacks and killings across several states in the country.

The conference specifically mentioned the killings in Plateau, Borno, Benue, Niger and most recently, Kwara .

“These gruesome acts have led to tragic loss of lives, widespread displacement, and unimaginable trauma for thousands of Nigerians.

“We are alarmed by the escalating insecurity in the land and the seeming helplessness with which these attacks are met.

“The time for mere condemnation and rhetoric has passed; urgent and coordinated action is now required at all levels of government to end these bloodbaths and restore peace and order,’ they said .

The conference acknowledged that defence and national security fall within the exclusive jurisdiction of the federal government.

“We must stress that every level of government bears responsibility for the security and welfare of the people.

“State governors, in particular, must rise to the occasion and fully understand that governance is not limited to road construction and ceremonial functions.

“True governance is rooted in the protection of lives, the preservation of order, and the alleviation of suffering,” the statement said.

The speakers also called on the state governments to complement the efforts of the federal government by making and enforcing an enabling laws for community policing and other grassroots-driven security models.

“States must develop proactive frameworks that integrate local intelligence, social support systems, and youth engagement in the fight against insecurity.

“ Furthermore, we urge the federal government to meaningfully engage the citizenry and introduce bold, practical measures to cushion the hardship caused by its current economic policies.

“Millions of Nigerians are groaning under the weight of inflation, unemployment, and a cost-of-living crisis.

“It is imperative that relief initiatives targeted, transparent, and impactful are rolled out without delay. Dialogue, not distance, must define the relationship between the government and its people at this critical time,” it said.

The speakers affirmed their commitment to support all legislative actions necessary to restore security, promote justice, and foster inclusive governance across the country.

“The killings in Benue, Niger, Plateau, Borno, Kwara, and any part of Nigeria must not be allowed to continue unchecked. Justice must prevail, and peace must be restored.

“Let it be known that the safety, dignity, and well-being of every Nigerian must remain the top priority of all arms and levels of government,” he said.
