  • Baby viciously attacked by Pit Bull dog survives (Pictures)

Doctors at Cedarcrest Hospital, in Abuja, have successfully operated on a 13-month-old baby, who was viciously attacked by a pit bull at Mambilla Barracks, Abuja, on Tuesday, October 8.

It was reported that the black dog, believed to be a pit bull, reportedly broke free from its cage and wandered off into the block where little Michael was playing with his four-year-old brother.

Upon seeing the dog, his older brother immediately fled into the house, but Michael was not quick enough as the dog pounced on him.

The dog subsequently grabbed Michael by the head and pulled him about 30 metres away and had bitten him repeatedly.

The dog began feasting on the 1-year-old boy, using its teeth to tear into the boys skull. A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said she quickly raised the alarm.

Residents rushed to help the 1-year-old boy, but their efforts seemed unsuccessful, as the dog refused to let go of the boys head.

Access Bank Plc. has hit one billion naira daily in loan value through its expanded digital lending portfolio.

Mr Victor Etuokwu, the bank’s Executive Director, Retail Banking, stated this in Lagos on Tuesday.

Etuokwu said its expanded digital lending portfolio, which gives Nigerians quick and 24/7 access to funds for emergencies without any collateral, had recorded N1 billion daily in loan value.

He stated that the bank was at the forefront of digital lending across the continent.

“This is a deliberate choice we made when we introduced the first USSD-based digital lending product in Nigeria based on our deep understanding of our operating environment.

“In the past two years, we have disbursed over 3.5 million loans to individuals.

“We acknowledge it is no mean feat when compared to where the market is coming from, but this is still a scratch in the overall potential of this market,” he said.

Etuokwu said that the bank had disbursed over N45 billion in over two million disbursements to individuals this year alone.

“This year alone we have disbursed over N45 billion in over 2 million disbursements to individuals and have recently witnessed a spike in our volumes hitting N1 billion daily.

“This achievement and our focus on retail lending reiterate our commitment to democratise access to financial services leveraging digital technology,” Etuokwu said.

He said that the bank had continued to expand its loan portfolio using its proven innovative algorithms and deep machine learning capabilities.

According to him, Access Bank has continued to do so since the launch of its digital loan portfolio, with PayDay Loan as the flagship product.

“The bank’s retail innovation journey has led it to expand its digital loan offerings to other multi-tenured variants to fit the needs of its diverse retail customer segments,” he said.

Etuokwu said that the bank also launched a dedicated loan application platform known as QuickBucks in the third quarter of 2018.

According to him, QuickBucks is a Mobile Banking Application for digital loans aimed at improving customers borrowing experience for retail loans.

Also speaking, Mr Chinedu Onuoha, Head Digital Banking Business Development, Access Bank, lauded the bank’s achievement in digital lending.

“Our objective is to ensure that there is a digital loan product for every adult Nigerian who has proven means of livelihood because we know that every individual at one point or another requires some form of financial support.

“Our flagship digital loan product, PayDay Loan, is tailored to help individuals meet their urgent cash needs.

“Though the tenor for this loan is 30 days, we also have loans with tenors of three months and six months,” Onuoha said.

  • Man drives body to California police station, claims he killed 4

A man on Monday drove a body to a police station in northern California and claimed he killed four people, authorities said.

The man was arrested by Mt Shasta Police, near California’s northern border with Oregon, who in turn alerted Roseville Police, some 300 kilometres south of Mt Shasta, police spokesman Josh Simon said at a press conference.

“He showed up at the police department in this car, with the body,” Simon said.

Roseville Police said in a Facebook post that the man “claimed to have murdered individuals at his residence in Roseville.

One of the possible victims was inside his vehicle at the Mt Shasta Police Department in Siskiyou County and other victims were at an apartment in Roseville.”

Simon told journalists that police believed “the suspect and victims were known to each other.”

Police said the only suspect is in custody and that they don’t believe there is any ongoing threat.

  • ARV: Nigeria has no local ARV brand, says Society Cochairman

The Coalition of Civil Society Network on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (COCSHAN) says there is no
local Anti Retroviral (ARV) brand in the country at the moment.

Mr Ikenna Nwakamma, the first Co-chairman of the society, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on
Tuesday while reacting to speculations that Nigeria produces and exports ARV drugs to neighbouring countries.

ARV is a drug used to prevent retrovirus such as HIV from replicating. The term primarily refers to antiretroviral (ARV) HIV drugs.

Nwakamma, therefore, explained that some pharmaceutical companies in the country had received advanced level accreditation
to produce the drug but lacked government support.

He added that “you know that donors are mainly funding our HIV programmes, but Nigerian government is funding HIV
    response in Abia and Taraba.

“The President promised to fund additional 50,000 people living with the virus every year. I think we should launch our local
ARV drug using government fund in the two states.”

The cochairman said that the drugs could easily be manufactured if pharmaceutical companies in the country could be supported by government.

Nwakamma reiterated calls for local ARV brand.

According to him, the donors will gradually leave, so, it is important to build sustainable systems that will ensure that their
exit will not throw us into bigger problem.

NAN reports that there have been speculations that Nigeria exports ARV drugs to other African countries.

  • Michelle Obama – A Food For Thought

    FlowerbudNews: Michelle, the glamorous former First Lady of the United States says;
We meet people everyday for a reason. Some come to add and increase us, others leave us broken yet strong enough to learn exactly what circle of relationships we need and how to preserve them.
Abraham in the Bible had no idea he was taking care of angels when he opened his heart to strangers. Where am I going with this post?
You have no idea what the person you treat condescendingly would become. No idea.
In 1981 a white American girl named Catherine Donnelly gained admission to Princeton University, which was predominantly white and got the shock of her life on her first day at school. Her new roommate would be a tall lanky black American girl named LaVaugn Michelle Robinson from Chicago.
She picked the phone and called her mother immediately. She’s what?” Alice Brown asked, the tone of her voice hovering somewhere between anxiety and outright panic. She called Catherine’s grandmother and together they drove to Princeton to protest “the calamity”. Eventually Michelle was in the big room alone because someone saw the colour of her skin instead of her heart.
So in 2009 when Barak Obama became the 44th President of the United States auntie Catherine Donnelly had missed the slightest opportunity to become a very good friend to the First Lady of the United States who was just an ordinary black girl that time.
This is the capital truth:  *Every favour you pray for is hidden in people who may not look like it now.
*Everything you dream of will be fulfilled with people because you are not living in space
The future is bigger than us. Ego is a capital robber of relationships that would have blessed us in future. To be egocentric is to be mentally myopic.  Relationship is the goldmine of the beautiful future we dream about.

  • Britain says Merkel sees Brexit deal as ‘overwhelmingly unlikely’

The British government has reportedly accused German Chancellor Angela Merkel of telling Prime Minister Boris Johnson by phone on Tuesday that she sees a Brexit deal as “overwhelmingly unlikely” unless London accepts new conditions.

A Downing Street source said that Merkel had “made clear a deal is overwhelmingly unlikely and she thinks the EU has a veto on (Britain) leaving the customs union,” Sky News and the BBC reported.

A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that it had given a readout of the phone call but would not immediately share it.

In Berlin, the German government confirmed that the call took place but declined to give details of the “confidential conversation”.

The broadcasters quoted Downing Street as saying Merkel’s comments make a deal “essentially impossible”.

Keir Starmer, the opposition Labour party’s Brexit spokesman, accused Johnson’s Conservative government of trying to “sabotage the (Brexit) negotiations” through its remarks on the phone call.

In Brussels, European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted to Johnson that “what’s at stake is not winning some stupid blame game”.

“At stake is the future of Europe and the UK as well as the security and interests of our people,” Tusk wrote.

“You don’t want a deal, you don’t want an extension, you don’t want to revoke, quo vadis?, he added, using the Latin for “Where are you going?”

European Commission spokeswoman Mina Andreeva stressed that the Brussels is still “working for a deal” and technical talks are continuing.

Pro-EU Labour lawmaker Hillary Benn, who instigated new legislation designed to prevent Johnson taking Britain out of the EU without a deal on Oct. 31, told the BBC that the Downing Street statement was “about blaming Angela Merkel for something that is from Boris Johnson.”

“This is yet another cynical attempt by [Downing Street] to sabotage the negotiations,” Starmer tweeted.

“Boris Johnson will never take responsibility for his own failure to put forward a credible deal.

“His strategy from day one has been for a no-deal Brexit,” he added.

But Steve Baker, an influential pro-Brexit Conservative lawmaker, responded to Tusk by defending Johnson.

“We’d like a deal. We’d like to end up in a relationship of the character the EU offered us last year.

“For the whole UK,” Baker tweeted, referring to key sticking points on how to handle the post-Brexit Irish border.

He added that the EU “has been encouraged by our weak and incompetent parliament to think Northern Ireland is the price.

“That’s wrong. Boris is right to defend our Union,” Baker said.

Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said it was “hard to disagree” with Tusk.

Tusk’s statement “reflects the frustration across EU and the enormity of what’s at stake for us all,” Coveney tweeted.

Merkel met with European Parliament President David Sassoli in Berlin on Tuesday to discuss Brexit.

They did not comment on the Brexit showdown before their closed-door meeting.

Merkel was also due to meet Tusk later Tuesday, while Johnson was scheduled to meet Sassoli in London.

Johnson has insisted that Britain must leave the EU on Oct. 31, with or without an exit deal.

“While changing the ways in which citizens engage with government, empowering them and non-state actors to take a more active role in holding government accountable.

He added that as noted by the Support Unit, Nigeria under the first NAP has set high standards for consultations with civil society and ambitious commitments that other countries aim to follow.

He said that the federal government had approved the harmonized National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) and Asset Recovery and Management Unit (ARMU) that serve as the secretariat for the implementation of National Anti-Corruption Strategy.

Mr Sanjay Pradhan, the CEO of OGP congratulated Nigeria for being elected to join the global Steering committee of OGP which is a global leadership role that represents more than two billion people on the planet.

He encouraged them to embrace all the attributes of leadership.

“One of the attributes of leadership is to be discontent with the status quo; you want to go further so as a leader and supporter on the global stage, I urge you to raise your ambition further.

“If you continue to raise your ambition further in the implementation of the action plan, this will deliver dividend for Nigerians both domestically and internationally.

The Managing Director of the Bank of Industry, Mr Olukayode Pitan, has urged State and Federal Governments to establish more universities of technology to drive development.

Pitan gave the advice during the ancillary meeting at the 25th Nigerian Economic Summit in Abuja on Tuesday.

The 2019 summit has as its theme: “Nigeria 2050 Shifting Gears”.

He said the country must identify the kind of education that would gurantee accelerated development.

He said other developed countries like United States and India gave a lot of priority to technological education.

According to him, there is no doubt that investing in education is key in ensuring rapid growth and development.

He, however, urged those intending to start Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) not to rely on bank loans alone but to source for funds from family and friends.

The Deputy General Manager of Abuja Enterprises Agency, Mr Shehu Abdulkadir, also called for merger of MSMEs to be more productive.
