    CISHAN caution Sokoto students against HIV/AIDS, risky behaviour

    The Civil Society for HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (CISHAN) has cautioned students and other adolescents against premarital risky behaviour and encouraged them to promote awareness on HIV prevalence.

    The CISHAN Sokoto State Coordinator, Mr Muhammad Garba, made the call at a sensitisation in commemoration of the 2025 World AIDS Day in Sokoto.

    The World AIDS Day is annually celebrated on Dec. 1 across the globe to raise awareness about the dangers of HIV and AIDS and proffer ways to assist people living with the virus.

    The 2025 edition of the global observance has “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response” as its theme, calling for sustained political leadership, international cooperation and human-rights-centred approaches to end AIDS by 2030.

    Garba, therefore, cautioned students against risky behaviour and stressed the need for increased awareness about the deadly virus.

    He appealed to Sokoto State Government to ensure prompt approvals and release of funds and intensify efforts by media, as well as community organisations for awareness.

    He underscored the importance of sustaining the successes on the fight against HIV prevalence through increased budgetary allocations and fund releases to relevant agencies.

    He said the effort would scale up HIV testing and treatment services at all levels, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

    The coordinator further stressed the importance of addressing social and economic determinants of health, including poverty, stigma and discrimination, which exacerbated the HIV epidemic.

    According to him, students and adolescents are targeted in view of current statistics of HIV infected persons, as well as their positions as future leaders and involvements in social activities.

    He urged them to adhere to preventive measures to avoid contracting the disease.

    Mr Kabiru Umar, the Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis and Leprosy (SOSACAT), said the state has achieved the 95-95-95 HIV/AIDS control target.

    Umar said these covered diagnosis, treatment and viral suppression, marking a significant milestone in the fight against the epidemic within the state.

    He said the year 2025 theme — “Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response,” reflected renewed hope for Sokoto State and all people affected by HIV, highlighting progress made in spite of past challenges and disruptions.

    The Vice Principal, Federal Government College, Sokoto, Alhaji Aliyu Haruna, thanked CISHAN for conducting the sensitisation in the school, which gave students opportunity to understand and broaden their knowledge of HIV and other diseases.

    The School Head Girl, Onoh Eucharist- Chinenye, commended the organisers and expressed optimism that students would use knowledge gained to protect themselves.

    The event witnessed drama presentation, lectures and discussions on HIV prevalence, mode of contracting the virus and general counselling.

    Justice actors champion Improved multidoor courts system to resolve conflicts

    Stakeholders in dispute resolution techniques on Tuesday in Sokoto, called for improved multi door court model, as well as climate-action, aimed at achieving out-of-court settlement of conflicts.

    They made the call at the end of a two-day Executive Policy and Peer Learning Roundtable on Strengthening Justice Sector Reforms and Promoting Access to Justice.

    The event organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) “Project Alert”, aims at advancing justice sector reforms in the North West.

    It has particular referrence to the multidoor courthouse model, and a new climate-action initiative.

    In his address, Country Director of International Alert Nigeria, Dr. Kingsley Udo, said that the effort is supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, under the programme: Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG).

    Udo emphasised the need for timely, affordable and community-responsive access to justice, which is vital for preventing heightened grievances

    He noted that emerging challenges in the region underscored the need for a flexible and people-centred mechanisms for resolving disputes.

    ” One of the central interventions discussed was the multi door courthouse, a system that offers alternatives to traditional litigation.

    ” The model, currently undergoing consideration at the Zamfara State House of Assembly, is also being supported with public awareness activities in Katsina, to strengthen citizens’ understanding of its benefits, ” he said.

    He explained that International Alert further introduced a new initiative titled “Powering Peace Through Climate Action,” which will be implemented in Sokoto, to address climate-related pressures.

    He called for increased commitment, investment and adhering to implementation strategies in order to achieve the desired objectives.

    The Programme Manager, Mr Sunday Jimoh, expressed appreciation to the Sokoto State Government and the British FCDO for their continued collaboration.

    He said that the meeting sought to reinforce trust between communities and public institutions by promoting peaceful, fair and accessible justice mechanisms.

    ” The roundtable is expected to produce clear Standard Operating Procedures for case referrals and a practical roadmap for expanding the multidoor courthouse model across the North West, ” he said.

    On his part, the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Kabiru Ibrahim- Kware, who represented the Speaker, affirmed the legislature’s readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to drive justice reforms.

    He assured that the Assembly will enact laws that will further support effective justice delivery and strengthen public confidence.

    Also speaking, the Director of the Kaduna State Multi door Court House, made presentation on the roles of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) centres, and community engagements.

    Daniel said there was need to leverage the multi door courthouse for accessible, efficient and peace-promoting disputes resolution.

    The event had in attendance, senior government officials, legislators, judges, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and development partners.

    The Vice Chancellor of ICONIC University, Dr Shadi Sabeh, has warned youths against greed, dishonesty and mischieves in order to succeed in their businesses and engagements.

    Sabeh, the Proprietor of Brilliant Footsteps Academy and owner of Amana rice mill Sokoto made the suggestions in an interactive session during Youth Summit for Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) in Sokoto.

    The event was organized by the Sokoto State Ministry of Information in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

    Sabeh underscored the importance reorientation strategies on the values of having a good and decent lifestyle, devoid of exploitative tendencies, over dependence in relationships.

    He urged youths to be self reliance, shun shy, extravagant behaviour and laziness stressing the need for youths to embrace death different forms of businesses not to rely on salary earning engagements.

    Another Resource Person, Hafsat Sahabi-Dange, encouraged youth to be determine in pursuing their chosen carriers and shelves away from detractions stressing that challenges should channel toward profitable engagement.

    Sahabi-Dange, an entrepreneur and lawyer by training, counselled youths especially females that marriage should not be a barrier for livelihood struggles but a ladder to achieve greatness.

    The UNICEF Sokoto Chief Field Office, Mr Michael Juma, challenged the participants to build a stronger young network.

    Juma highlighted UNICEF’s various programs across the state, including vaccination, education, healthcare services, nutrition, water, and sanitation.

    He emphasised the need to engage youth platforms to mobilise communities to access these services and address climate change.

    In his address, the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Sambo Danchadi, stated that the summit aimed to strengthen youth-led communication, amplify their voices, and support them to become champions of behaviour change in Sokoto State.

    Danchadi assured that the Ministry of Information, under the leadership of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, remains committed to sustaining the partnership with UNICEF.

    ” The collaboration has demonstrated that when government and development partners work together, meaningful and sustainable progress can be achieved, ” he said.

    The Commissioner urged the youth to actively participate, share their ideas, and take ownership of the agenda for positive change.

    Different issues mitigating youths progress, solutions to envisage problems and wayforward on youths entrepreneurship development, mentorship, skills and educational growth among others.

    The Nasrul-Lahi-il-Fatih Society (NASFAT), has trained 60 mosques’ Imams and community leaders on professional counselling skills to promote disputes resolution mechanisms in the society.
    The NASFAT’s Guidance and Counselling Coordinator for Zamfara, Sokoto and Kebbi states, Mrs Shakirat Na’Allah, said the programme was designed to enhance the capacity of Imams and group leaders on the require skills to handle resolutions.
    ” Participants play great role on settling disagreements, offer advices, guides and engaged on informal counselling at schools, mosques and settlements.
    ” We consider it important to upgrade their capacity, empower them with requisite skills relevant to global practices on counselling.
    ” Participants comprised Imams, community groups, youth and women association leaders from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states,” Na’Allah said.
    She underscored the importance of guidance and counseling in all human lives shaping marriage lifestyles, communal and societal livings for proper understanding and peaceful coexistence.
    NASFAT’s Counselling Committee Chairman, Dr Oladapo Koyumu, reatraited the organisation’s determination to expand the initiative across the nation in order contribute to dispute resolution mechanism at various levels.
    Koyumu called for increased dedication toward promoting services that will foster peace and development in the society.
    He thanked organisations that supported the drive and urged the participants to concentrate on utilisation of the new ideas, share experiences and educate others their in their respective settlements.
    Former Commissioner of Education in Sokoto state, Prof. A’isha Madawaki, described the training as relevant and timely in recognition of the disputes that occured in the society.
    Madawaki said efforts would strengthen community relationship and family living and children upbringings that would shape understanding, responsible and accessible peace building initiatives.
    The Executive Director of Life Helpers Initiative, Mr Tayo Fatini, said the training is a landmark achievement toward bridging the garp of traditional activity with professional capacity.
    Fatini enjoined the groups to dedicate more efforts on educating others on the importance of peaceful coexistence, mutual understanding, dialogue and settlings all forms of disputes amicably.
    Guidance and Counselling specialists, Dr Abdulhakim Olawake and Dr Adekunle Sa’id from Lagos State University of Education made presentations of counseling techniques.

    Raba LGA Chair debunk killing in Tofa village

    The Chairman of Rabah Local Government Area of Sokoto state, Alhaji Yusuf Muhammad, has denied alleged killing of citizens by armed bandits during an attack on Tofa community in the area.

    This is contained in a statement signed by council’s Information Officer,  Mr Mode Maidawa, and made available to the newsmen on Thursday in Sokoto.

    Muhammad confirmed that a gang of bandits from Alikiru in Sububu Forest of Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State, have passed through Dankare and Dalijan villages before they  arrived at Tofa community.

    He said the incident occured on  Wednesday night where they shoots sporadically the situation they have attracted the attention of combined security personnel.

    He explained that a combined team of security personnel that comprised military, Police, Community Guard Corps, and local Vigilantes confronted the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire.

    According to him, during the encounter, two villagers sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

    “One of them has since been discharged, while the other is still receiving treatment due to the severity of the injury he sustained,” the Chairman said.

    He added that the council authority is covering all medical expenses for the two victims.

    The Chairman also disclosed that two female residents of Tofa community were initially reported missing and later confirmed to have been abducted by the bandits.

    He noted that the attackers abandoned livestocks which they have earlier rustled from other places as a result of the exchange of fire with security personnel.

    Muhammad further dismissed the reports that claimed that many people were killed and abducted during the attack, describing it as false and misleading.

    He commended the military, police, community guards, and vigilante groups for their swift response, which helped repel the attackers.

    The Chairman assured residents of the administration’s continued commitment to strengthening security in Rabah LGA.

    He urged communities to support government and security agencies with reliable information, especially regarding informants living among them.He further appealed to the public to refrain from politicizing or making insensitive comments on security issues due to their delicate nature.

    While commending Gov. Ahmed Aliyu for the special attention and support, he appealed for continues support to the local government areas affected by banditry in the state.

    Sokoto stakeholders advocate climate-resilient conflict resolution

    Stakeholders in peace-building, humanitarian, and development sectors in Sokoto State have stressed the urgent need to integrate climate-sensitive approaches into conflict resolution strategies.

    The stakeholders agreed on the strategy during the inaugural meeting of Sokoto State Project Steering Committee for the Powering Peace through Climate Action II (PPCA) Project in Sokoto.

    The Newsmen reports that the initiative is being led by International Alert Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation, with financial and technical support from Irish Aid.

    Participants noted that climate-sensitive conflict approaches prioritised understanding the links between climate change and conflict, enabling policymakers to address both issues effectively and prevent escalation in vulnerable communities.

    They added that adopting climate-sensitive adaptation strategies could mitigate climate-related conflicts, promote sustainable peace, enhance development, and strengthen resilience in communities most affected by climate impacts.

    The District Head of Gagi, Alhaji Sani Umar-Jabbi, emphasised the importance of a joint strategy addressing climate and conflict challenges at national, state, and community levels for a coordinated response.

    Umar-Jabbi urged conflict-sensitive policymaking that recognised the root causes of conflict and responded proactively, noting that climate change exacerbated gender-based violence, poverty, social decay, and declining educational standards.

    The Special Adviser to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu on donor agencies, Malam Shehu Gwaranyo, commended International Alert for the project and reiterated the state government’s commitment to addressing climate change as a global challenge.

    Gwaranyo stressed that tackling climate impacts required coordinated action by government, civil society, international partners, and citizens to achieve lasting solutions and sustainable development outcomes.

    Senior Project Officer for International Alert, Mr Sanusi Audu, said the meeting united stakeholders to discuss insecurity challenges facing Sokoto, highlighting that climate change was drying grazing areas, reducing farming productivity, and threatening food security.

    Audu explained that reduced resources created competition among occupational groups, such as herders and farmers, escalating conflicts across the country, which were mostly resource-based in nature.

    He added that addressing insecurity without considering climate drivers would allow underlying issues to fester, making climate-sensitive approaches essential for long-term peace, stability, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

    Sightsavers mobilises 87 district Heads for Azithromycin drive in Sokoto

    Sightsavers, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency, mobilised 87 District Heads to support administering azithromycin to children, strengthening community participation in statewide child-health intervention efforts.

    The Newsmen reports that the programme operates under the SARMAAN project, formally titled Antimicrobial Resistance of Mass Administration of Azithromycin Among Children, designed to improve child survival outcomes through preventive treatment.

    Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, thereby stopping bacterial growth, making it effective for tackling infections contributing to high childhood morbidity and mortality in vulnerable communities.

    The antibiotic is commonly used to treat respiratory infections, diarrhoea, and various childhood illnesses. Its administration aligns with the World Health Organisation’s 2022 guidelines for targeted preventive treatment among at-risk populations.

    Speaking at the engagement meeting in Sokoto, Sightsavers State Programme Officer Muhammad Ladan, said SARMAAN was a government-led research initiative originating from unexpected findings that highlighted wider benefits of azithromycin distribution.

    Representing Country Director Joy Shu’aibu, Ladan explained that the programme targeted children aged zero to 59 months using azithromycin, particularly in communities battling Neglected Tropical Diseases like onchocerciasis and schistosomiasis causing significant mortality.

    He emphasised the crucial roles of traditional rulers, acknowledging their longstanding commitments and contributions to previous health campaigns, which significantly improved participation and helped achieve measurable community-based health successes.

    Ladan noted that participating District Heads were expected to step down discussions, sharing knowledge with lower-level traditional rulers across their communities to strengthen awareness and ensure widespread programme coordination.

    He reiterated that Sokoto remained among states with high child mortality, stressing the NGO’s commitment through SARMAAN to reduce deaths by expanding preventive drug administration and ensuring improved community health outcomes.

    Ladan confirmed that children in 20 local government areas had already benefited from azithromycin treatment, describing the programme as a significant milestone toward improving overall life expectancy within the state.

    According to him, round three recorded more than 90 per cent coverage, raising hopes for sustaining the progress while monitoring azithromycin’s safety and effectiveness in reducing antimicrobial resistance among treated children.

    He highlighted Sightsavers’ presence in Sokoto since 1996, beginning with eye-care services that eventually led to establishing and equipping 19 healthcare centres providing consistent, community-based eye-care support.

    Through the interventions, more doctors, nurses, community health workers and auxiliary staff received specialised eye-care training, significantly strengthening the state’s capacity to deliver essential services to underserved populations.

    Ladan added that Sightsavers introduced an inclusive education system enabling blind students to learn alongside sighted peers, resulting in several visually impaired learners progressing to higher educational levels.

    Sultan of Sokoto, represented by Wurno District Head Alhaji Kabiru Cigari, assured continued support for programme implementation and immunisation coverage, reaffirming traditional institutions’ commitment to improving citizens’ health.

    He urged participants to take the programme seriously and intensify their contributions toward enhancing community health, emphasising that improved well-being required consistent cooperation between leaders and households.

    SSPHCDA Advocacy Director Alhaji Kamaru Gada said the state government distributed motorcycles to rural immunisation officers and provided refrigerators to strengthen the cold chain and enhance vaccination efficiency.

    Gada hailed the project’s success, noting that azithromycin remained a vital antibiotic for treating childhood ailments, playing a significant role in reducing deaths and improving survival among vulnerable children.

    He described support from Sightsavers and other partners as highly complementary to government healthcare efforts, assuring strengthened collaboration to achieve lasting and impactful health outcomes statewide.

    The meeting ended with discussions on challenges, community-based solutions, and attitudes of government officials and health workers toward immunisation campaigns, aiming to improve delivery and public participation effectively.

    Prof. Usman Abdulkadir, the Vice Chairman of Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Federal Government College (FGC) Sokoto Staff School, says teachers’ professional development remains their pivotal focus.

    Abdulkadir made the commitment during a teacher training programme with theme ” Empowering Educators of the 21st Century ” organised by PTA on Saturday in Sokoto.

    He recalled that his background as an educationist informed his interest in teacher’s development hence her acceptance of her present position.

    “ When we assumed as the PTA leadership, we promised to enhance teachers salary, teachers training and students development with motive to drive the passion to contribute our quota to the education sector, especially in teacher’s quality.

    “ In education, there are certain components that can not be compromised, if you want excellence.

    “You need vibrant teachers, the physical structure to be in place that is, the classrooms, the lecture halls and then, the facilities,” he said.

    He said the implementers of education, that is, the teachers must be specially trained with the ever changing needs and demands from all sections of the education sector.

    The Vice Chairman emphasised that teachers have to be current, specially trained with attention focused on teacher quality and professionalism to remain abrace with students challenges.

    The Assistant Head Teacher, Mr Victor Chiwuzo, said the vision was to enhance the professional skills of serving teachers for high quality education delivery at the nursery and primary levels with the view to uplifting the standard of education system.

    Chiwozo said no fewer than 98 teachers participated in the programme and urged public and private schools PTAs to emulate FGC Sokoto on workers development initiatives.

    He underscored the importance on internal teaching and experience sharing mechanism among school teachers which allows institutions to overcome challenges, easing learning difficulties and facilitate teachers growth.

    The lead presenters, Dr Surajo Gada from Usmanu Danfodio University Sokoto and Dr A’isha Abdullahi of Shehu Shagari University of Education.Sokoto dwelled on child-centred teaching skills.

    According to them, the model enabled to update and upgrade teachers’ knowledge and skills in curriculum implementation while instilling in children the virtues of dedication, loyalty, commitment, discipline and resourcefulness.

    Some participants, Mr Samuel Eze, Titilayo Olagunyo and A’isha Musa expressed optimism that training have broaden their teaching skills and would enhance teaching capabilities.

    Participants than PTA and school management over the support and assured to reciprocate it with increased dedication.

    Bodinga community in Sokoto state have ratified a developed Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Harmful Practices prevention guidelines to harness the implementation of Violence Against Person Prohibition (VAPP) and Child Protection laws.
    The document was signed by the District Head Alhaji Muhammadu Abdulrauf and Chairman of Bodinga Local Government Area Alhaji Shehu Dingyadi respectively after a three-day Community Guideline Development meeting on Harmful Practices and GBV on Friday in Bodinga.
    NAN reports that no fewer than 60 religious and community leaders, civil society organisations representatives, law enforcement agents, youth and women groups members reviewed the document before agreeing on the contents.
    The programme was conducted by United Nations (UN) Women, in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs aimed at championing the campaigns and conversations on GBV and Harmful Practices in the society.
    Speaking ceremony, the District Head  said Bodinga community stand upon the sacred trust bestowed by our forefathers and guided by the divine principles of justice, compassion, and dignity in Islam and our sacred culture, hereby making  the binding to the public.
    Abdulrauf noted that the document was prepared through extensive consultations with traditional leaders, religious scholars, women leaders, youth representatives, and community members.
    ” We have collectively examined cultural practices that undermine the wellbeing, rights, and dignity of women and girls.
    ” Recognising that harmful practices have no place in Islam and our culture, and acknowledging the obligation upon leadership to protect the vulnerable, preserve justice, and uphold the sanctity of every human life.
    ” We abolish wife battery and all forms of domestic violence, rape and all forms of sexual violence, forced marriage, emotional and psychological violence,
    sending girls under 18 years to hawk and all forms of Impunity connected to GBV,” District Head said.
    He added that these practices violate both the teachings of Islam which honour women as equals in dignity and the laws of our land, including the Sokoto State Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law.
    In his address, the Council Chairman said any individual, group, or authority that supports, defends, or carries out any of these condemned practices stands in opposition to traditional throne, community, to the law, and to the divine principles of justice.
    Dingyadi said such actions would attract appropriate traditional and legal sanctions.
    ” We commit to working closely with the state government, UN Women, religious institutions, and other relevant stakeholders to adhere to the produced community guideline against harmful practices which is a practical roadmap rooted in culture, faith, and the law.
    ” This declaration stands as a testament to our commitment to justice, peace, and the protection of all members of our society, especially women and girls who have suffered in silence for too long.
    ” May this step strengthen our community, uplift our women and girls, and reflect our true values of dignity, equity, and shared humanity, ” Dingyadi declared.
    According to him, perpetrators would be handed over to appropriate authorities for prosecution under the VAPP Law, Child protection law provisions, and other relevant laws.
    While he commended UN Women and the ministry, he said community agreed to sanctions perpetrators which may include; public reprimand before the community council, suspension from community privileges, withdrawal of community recognition or titles and denial of participation in cultural festivals or leadership roles.
    The UN Women Programme Officer, Ms A’isha Sani, the prepared document translated community commitment adding that their involvement would ensure good understanding toward creating a better society.
    ” We believe that religious leaders have a way of appealing to the consciousness of people. UN Women believes that religious leaders have vital roles to play.
    “GBV happens everywhere, I believe it is easier to prevent something from happening than proffering solutions,” She said.
    Responding, the Director Women in the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, Hajia Hauwa’u Umar-Jabo, commended UN Women for the support as well as the community leaders commitment throughout the exercise.
    Umar-Jabo assured more support to ensure implementation of the produce guidelines and urged for more support and partnerships to tackle all forms of GBV and harmful practices abroad the state.
    NAN reports that the document was prepared under the lead Consultant, Ms Hafsat Maina, while a cross section of participants expressed optimism that it would improve the living standards of citizens.
