    Enugu, April 21, 2026.

Dr Moses Ifeanyieze, Principal of Union Secondary School, Awkunanaw, Enugu, has urged JAMB to share its Computer-Based Test (CBT) expertise with other examination councils.

He spoke as WAEC and NECO signalled plans to introduce CBT for their nationwide examinations in the near future.

Ifeanyieze, also an Anglican Venerable, made the call on Tuesday while addressing journalists on the ongoing UTME CBT at his school.

He said WAEC and NECO would benefit by leveraging JAMB’s years of experience, noting improvements recorded annually in the CBT exercise.

The principal added that councils could utilise JAMB’s infrastructure and organised timetable to manage large candidate numbers effectively.

“JAMB, through consistency and experience, has addressed challenges of power supply, impersonation and examination malpractice,” he said.

He noted that candidates taking the same subjects could sit together without compromising examination integrity.

On the ongoing exercise, he said the CBT had proceeded smoothly without any disruption.

“The security arrangement is robust. We have police, NSCDC and DSS personnel on ground.

“Candidates undergo checks at the gate, at the CBT hall entrance, and online slip verification before entry,” he said.

He said candidates commended the organisation and timing of the examination.

“They reported no power failure or system glitches at the centre,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports the UTME CBT runs daily from 8 a.m. to about 5.30 p.m. or 6 p.m. in four sessions.

The examination began on April 16 and will end on April 25.

Armed Robbery: Appeal Court upholds death sentence

    By Lucy Osuizigbo-Okechukwu

    Awka, April 21, 2026.

The Court of Appeal, Awka Division, has affirmed the conviction and death sentence of Chizoba Ede for armed robbery by an Anambra High Court.

In a judgment on June 15, 2022, Justice Victoria Nwoye found Ede guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.

The prosecution said Ede and four accomplices, armed with firearms and offensive weapons, attacked a victim along Upper Iweka, Onitsha, while in transit.

During the attack, the victim was stabbed, suffered severe hand injuries, and was dispossessed of money and valuables.

The court heard the victim later spotted the suspects fleeing in a vehicle and raised an alarm, attracting attention from the driver and passersby.

Public intervention and local vigilante operatives led to Ede’s arrest, while other suspects escaped.

Following his arrest, Ede reportedly made confessional statements and led police to the gang’s hideout, where only the victim’s identity card was recovered.

“Based on the evidence presented, the trial court convicted and sentenced him accordingly,” the court held.

Dissatisfied, the appellant challenged the verdict, citing inadequate legal representation and improper evaluation of evidence.

However, the appellate court dismissed the appeal, ruling the trial court properly assessed the evidence and ensured fair hearing.

“The appellant’s right to fair hearing was not violated as he was adequately represented,” the court ruled.

The court consequently upheld the conviction and sentence.

536 Visually Impaired Candidates Sit UTME, Stakeholders Applaud JAMB Boss.

    By Adewale  Owoade

‎The Chairman of the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), Emeritus Professor Peter Okebukola, has commended the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede, for his sustained commitment to inclusive education, as 536 blind candidates successfully participated in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

‎Speaking with journalists on Monday at the commencement of the special UTME sessions, Okebukola said the Oloyede-led administration had ensured that no qualified Nigerian is denied the opportunity to sit for the examination on account of disability.

‎Okebukola, who monitored this year’s examination from the Oyo centre, revealed that the exercise was conducted seamlessly across 11 designated centres nationwide. These centres are located in Oyo, Ekiti, Enugu, Bauchi, Lagos, Kano, Abuja, Jos, Kebbi, Yola, and Sokoto.

‎He noted that since 2017, JAMB, through JEOG, has provided comprehensive support services, including free accommodation for candidates and their guides, feeding, transportation, and customised examination materials.

‎He noted that the successful conduct of the examination for visually impaired candidates underscores JAMB’s dedication to equal opportunity and access to higher education for all Nigerians, regardless of physical challenges.

‎He also highlighted the adoption of a bimodal examination system, which allows candidates to choose between Fully-Braille and Fully Read-Aloud formats.

‎According to him, the initiative, now in its third year, has significantly enhanced accessibility and improved the examination experience for candidates with visual impairment.

‎Providing a breakdown, Okebukola said Kano recorded the highest number of candidates with 136, followed by Lagos with 95, while Abuja hosts 46 candidates. Other centres are located in Ado-Ekiti, Bauchi, Benin, Enugu, Kebbi, Oyo, Jos and Yola.

‎According to him, the exercise was supported by top past and serving chief executives of tertiary institutions, who volunteered their expertise to ensure smooth coordination and credible conduct of the examination across the centres.

‎On admission outcomes, Okebukola expressed satisfaction with the steady improvement in the performance of candidates with disabilities.

‎He disclosed that in the 2025 admission cycle, 483 candidates applied for tertiary education, out of which 252 secured admission, representing a 52.2 per cent success rate.

‎He noted that candidates with visual impairment accounted for the highest number of applications, while other categories such as Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Dyslexia also recorded encouraging admission rates, with Dyslexia candidates achieving full admission success.

‎Okebukola further observed a growing interest among candidates with disabilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, describing the trend as a positive development.

‎Despite the progress, he acknowledged persistent challenges faced by blind students in science-related courses, noting that efforts have been ongoing since 2018 to address the barriers.

‎He revealed that since its inception, JEOG has supported about 3,200 candidates with disabilities to participate in UTME, with over one-third gaining admission into tertiary institutions.

‎Okebukola said the initiative has continued to attract recognition across Africa as a model for inclusive education.

‎Also speaking, Professor Taoheed Adedoja, former Provost of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, and Oyo State examination centre coordinator for the past eight years, praised Oloyede for what he described as remarkable achievements in the administration of UTME over the last decade.

‎Adedoja, who also served as former Minister of Sports and Special Duties, highlighted the consistency, transparency, and innovation introduced into the examination system under Oloyede’s leadership.

‎He said the sustained success recorded in the past ten years has significantly improved public confidence in JAMB and ensured fairness in the admission process.

‎Both stakeholders reiterated the need to sustain the inclusive framework that accommodates candidates with special needs, stressing that education remains a fundamental right for every citizen.

  • 2027 Niger South Senate: Ndarani SAN seeks royal blessings

2027 Niger South Senate: Ndarani SAN seeks royal blessings

    By Mohammed Baba Busu

The All Progressives Party (APC) Senatorial Aspirant for Niger South in the 2027 general elections, Alhaji Mohammed Ndarani, SAN, has solicited for the blessings of traditional rulers in the zone to realise his ambition.

He made the appeal in continuation of his consultations with the traditional institution and critical stakeholders across the three Emirates that made up the district.

Ndarani, who also holds the traditional title of Hukunchi Nupe and Hausaland, over the weekend paid courtesy visits to the palaces of the Emir of Agaie and the Emir of Lapai, where he formally informed them of his decision to contest for the Niger South Senatorial seat.

During the consultations, the learned silk also met with District Heads in Agaie, Lapai and Bida, where he outlined his vision for the zone and sought their prayers, guidance and support.

The Emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu, expressed delight over the calibre of personalities supporting the movement, particularly the presence of former Niger State Commissioner for Information, Mr Jonathan Vatsa.

The royal father said the coming together of experienced and respected stakeholders was a positive sign for the aspiration.

“Alhamdulillahi! I am very happy because you have searched very well and that is what I have always advised.

“I have told you politicians to always talk to each other. Politics is not about fighting; it is about getting the right people to do what we want,” he said.

The Emir commended the consultative approach adopted by the aspirant, describing it as a demonstration of humility and respect for traditional institutions.

“I know the Chiroma of Lapai; but I know him better now. He always does the right thing. May Allah bless you.

“Actually, we are happy you accepted the call to serve because we know the good works you have been doing.

“We receive reports of almost everything you do and we know you as someone passionate about development. We pray Allah blesses this movement and grants you victory so that our dreams can become a reality,” he added.

Similarly, the Emir of Lapai, Alhaji Umar Bago Tafida 111, who was represented by the Nakordi of Lapai and District Head of Tashilo, Alhaji Suleiman Madami, assured the delegation of the palace’s goodwill and prayers.

According to him, electing competent individuals who understand legislative processes and constitutional matters was critical for effective representation.

“Whichever support we are going to give him to get to the Senate, may Allah guide us in that direction. Every benefit that comes from it is for all of us.

“Among Nupe lawyers, we are always happy seeing people like Ndarani in positions such as the Senate because legislative discussions require deep understanding of the constitution.

“Some people go to the Senate only to sleep because they do not understand the constitution. But he is someone who understands both the constitution and the needs of the poor,” he said.

In Bida, Alhaji Gimba Ishaku, the Makun Nupe, who also serves as the Chairman of Bida Emirate District Heads, alongside the District Head of Katayeregi, offered prayers for the success of the aspirant, describing him as a worthy son of the Nupe kingdom.

They noted that Ndarani had consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and progress of the people even before seeking elective office.

The Bida Emirate District Heads explained that Ndarani’s humility, accessibility and respect for traditional institutions had endeared him to many communities across the zone.

According to them, the Nupe kingdom will benefit greatly from having someone with his experience, integrity and legal expertise representing the people at the National Assembly.

They however urged Ndarani to remain focused and committed to the ideals of justice, fairness and development, adding that traditional institutions will continue to offer prayers and wise counsel throughout his political journey.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Director General of Ndarani SAN Senatorial Organisation (NDASSO), Alhaji Mohammed Dagachi Etsuagaie, said the delegation was in the palace to seek the blessings and guidance of the traditional rulers.

Etsuagaie explained that the aspiration was a collective decision by stakeholders across the Nupe kingdom who believed that Ndarani possessed the capacity and integrity to represent the people effectively.

“Between us and Allah, he did not initially say he wanted to contest. It was people from across the Nupe kingdom who approached him and urged him to represent us in the Senate and protect the integrity of the Nupe people.

“At first he declined, but after several appeals and consultations, he accepted the challenge and agreed to answer the call of the people. That is why we are here today to inform you that he has accepted to contest the Niger South Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Jonathan Vatsa, a former Niger State Commissioner for Information, highlighted Ndarani’s commitment to defending the interests of the region.

He recalled Ndarani’s strong intervention on issues concerning the Baro Port project, noting that the aspirant stood firmly in defence of the port when doubts were raised about its viability.

“Your Royal Highness, Baro is the only port we have in the North. It is not only for Niger State; it is an asset for the entire region,” he said.

Vatsa also narrated how Ndarani supported relief efforts during the devastating flood in Mokwa, explaining that the aspirant contributed to interventions aimed at assisting victims of the disaster.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner of Health in Niger, Dr Isah Yahaya-Vatsa, described Ndarani as a passionate advocate for the development of Nupe kingdom and the state at large.

He said the aspirant had already begun advocating for policies that would benefit the state even before becoming a senator.

According to him, Ndarani had written to the National Assembly advocating for 13 per cent derivation for states hosting hydroelectric dams, noting that Niger state deserved such benefits because it hosts major power-generating dams that supply electricity across Nigeria and beyond.

“Even before becoming a senator, he has already started pushing for policies that will benefit Niger State.

“If he gets to the Senate, he will ensure that such proposals receive the necessary legislative attention,” he said.

On his part, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria who is also the aspirant said his decision to join the senate race was driven by a genuine desire to serve the people and attract meaningful development to the region.

Ndarani SAN explained that his aspiration was not motivated by personal gain but by the need to ensure that the people of the zone benefit from democratic governance.

“My decision to run for the Senate is not about personal gains or my pocket.

“It is about service and the desire to bring the much-needed dividends of democracy to our people,” the legal ICON said.

The learned silk assured the traditional rulers that if given the opportunity to serve, he would focus on legislative initiatives that would promote economic development, youth empowerment and infrastructural growth across the district.

He also pledged to work closely with traditional institutions, community leaders and stakeholders to address the challenges facing the region.

The aspirant thanked the traditional rulers for the warm reception and prayers, assuring them that their guidance and support will remain invaluable in his quest to serve the people.

He prayed for peace, unity and continued progress for the Nupe kingdom and Nigeria as a whole.

  • Osogbo Stadium: Case for Adeleke’s Second Term

    By Akano Kolobo
As Osun State inches closer to the 2026 governorship election, voters will be confronted with the usual swirl of promises, rhetoric and political maneuvering. Yet, beyond the noise, elections are ultimately about evidence, what has been done, what is being built, and what direction a leader has set.
In that regard, the ongoing remodelling of the Osogbo Township Stadium offers a compelling lens through which to assess the re-election bid of Ademola Adeleke.
This is not just another construction project dressed up for political optics. The transformation of the stadium into a modern, multi-purpose sports complex reflects a broader philosophy of governance, one that recognizes infrastructure as a tool for human capital development, youth engagement, and economic stimulation.
Expanding capacity, upgrading facilities to international standards, and integrating complementary amenities such as hostels and commercial spaces signal intent that goes beyond ceremonial ribbon-cutting.
For a state like Osun, where a large percentage of the population is young, the implications are significant. A functional, world-class sports facility creates opportunities that extend far beyond football matches. It becomes a training ground for talent, a venue for competitions, and a platform for discovery.
In a country where many athletes rise despite poor infrastructure, the provision of a conducive environment could be the difference between latent potential and global success.
Critics may argue that stadiums do not automatically translate into medals or employment, and they would be right. Infrastructure alone is not enough. But it is an essential foundation. What distinguishes the current effort is its alignment with institutional reforms, including moves to strengthen sports administration and funding mechanisms in the state. If these structures are effectively implemented, the Osogbo stadium could anchor a sustainable sports ecosystem rather than stand as an isolated monument.
There is also an economic dimension that should not be overlooked. Modern sports complexes attract events, stimulate local commerce, and create jobs, both directly and indirectly. From vendors and transport operators to hospitality businesses, the ripple effects can be substantial. In an era where subnational governments must think creatively about revenue generation, such investments are not misplaced.
Politically, the project underscores a governance style that prioritizes visible, people-oriented development.
It sends a message that public resources are being translated into tangible assets. For many voters, especially the youth, this matters. It offers something concrete to measure against campaign promises.
Of course, the ultimate test lies ahead. Completion timelines must be met, standards must not be compromised, and, crucially, the facility must be actively utilized.
A world-class stadium that sits idle would defeat its purpose. The sustainability of this vision will depend on consistent programming, partnerships, and maintenance.
Even with these caveats, the direction is clear.
The Osogbo stadium remodelling represents more than bricks and mortar, it is a statement about priorities. It suggests a government attempting to invest in the future, not just manage the present.
As voters weigh their options, projects like this should form part of the conversation. Re-election is not about perfection; it is about progress and the credibility of a vision.
On that score, Adeleke’s investment in sports infrastructure provides a persuasive argument that his administration deserves the opportunity to consolidate and complete what it has started.
