Oyo APC Leader Begins Mediation Talks Over Candidacy Disputes

    ‎By Adewale Owoade

‎Professor Taoheed Adedoja, a leader of the All Progressives Congress had intensified efforts to broker peace among aspirants jostling for party tickets at the various primary elections across the state ,to preserve unity within the party.

‎The mediation moves, it was gathered, followed growing tension among supporters of various aspirants seeking elective positions under the platform of the APC across different constituencies and political offices.

‎Prof Adedoja,  a former Minister of Sports and Special Duties, had started engaging aspirants in separate meetings aimed at discouraging bitterness and division that could weaken the party ahead of the polls.

‎He envisioned that ‘’if my mediation template is considered, the unpicked aspirants will be encouraged to cooperate with the candidates for subsequent campaign activities of the party”

‎Prof Adedoja who  was the 2007 Oyo State  Governorship candidate  of  the Action Congress  AC, Said,  “from experience any aspirant should be recognised in determining the future of the party  and  can be negotiated on the mediation table which i am  currently exploring  with the current  circumstances of Oyo State ‘’

‎Adedoja established that he has spoken to several of the aspirants, who thought they have lost out in the recent  Party primaries, to continue to work for the party and imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship

‎According to him, the leadership of the party believes that allowing prolonged confrontations among aspirants could create avoidable factions capable of affecting APC’s electoral chances.

‎“The party cannot afford internal disunity at this critical period. That is why  am stepping in to mediate ” Adedoja said.

‎He also appealed to aspirants and their supporters to place party unity above personal ambition, warning against inflammatory statements and actions capable of heating up the polity.

‎Prof Adedoja emphasised further that the financial and mobilisation efforts of all the aspirants should not be jettisoned when candidates emerge either through primaries or consensus ,considering the array of supporters and sympathizers behind all aspirants

‎Meanwhile, political observers noted that consensus arrangements, if transparently handled, could reduce litigation, post-primary grievances and internal wrangling often associated with party contests.

‎However, several aspirants are reportedly insisting on open and competitive primaries, arguing that every interested member should be allowed to test popularity through the democratic process.

‎The governor disclosed that the state government had established an operational situation room at the Oyo State Police Command headquarters to coordinate rescue efforts and provide verified information to the public.

‎“The manufacturers from China arrived about three days ago and will require roughly two weeks to complete the process.

‎“I can say conclusively that the surveillance aircraft will become operational on or before the end of June,” the governor stated.

‎He explained that the aircraft were procured proactively to monitor border communities between Oyo and neighbouring states, as well as the international border with the Republic of Benin.

‎“We were proactive because we wanted to cover the borderline between Oyo and Kwara states, as well as the international border between our state and the Republic of Benin, although we did not anticipate this particular incident,” he said.

  • Ex-president Jonathan, AGF pray court to dismiss lawyer’s motion seeking judge’s recusal

Ex-president Jonathan, AGF pray court to dismiss lawyer’s motion seeking judge’s recusal

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on Monday urged Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court to dismiss a lawyer’s motion seeking his withdrawal from the case.

Jonathan and Fagbemi, through their lawyers, told Justice Lifu to dismiss the motion with sunstantial cost.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lawyer, Johnmary Jideobi, who is the plaintiff in the suit seeking to stop Jonathan from vying in the 2027 presidential election, had filed the motion.

In the motion on notice deposed to by his lawyer, Ndubuisi Ukpai, he is asking the judge to withdraw from the case, citing alleged bias.

Responding, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, who appeared for the ex-president, vehemently opposed Jideobi’s motion

The senior lawyer described application as frivolous, baseless and founded on gross misrepresentation.

“In opposition, we filed a counter affidavit of five paragraphs on May 12.

“We want my lord to rely on the record of this honourable court which has entirely dismissed the plaintiff’s entire claims as false and perjury,” he said.

Uche, who urged the court to discountenance the application as constituting a gross abuse of the court process, prayed the court to dismiss same with substantial cost and proceed with the case.

In the same vein, Fagbemi, who was represented in court by Mrs Maimuna Lami-Shiru, the Director of Civil Litigation and Public Law, Federal Ministry of Justice, also prayed the judge to dismissed the motion.

Lami-Shiru submitted that a judge may recuse himself from a case if he feels that his involvement will affect the impartiality of the suit

The lawyer, however, argued that that the instant motion was an abuse of court process.

She urged the court to dismiss the plaintiiff’s motion as being baseless, unmeritirious and unfounded on proper provisions of the law.

According to the lawyer, he who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

Lami-Shiru, who urged the court to dimiss the suit with substantial cost, sought N2 million cost in favour of the ministry.

In the main suit filed by the plaintiff, Jonathan and Fagbemi equally asked the court to dimiss same with substantial cost.

After taking arguments from lawyers to the plaintiff and the defendants, Justice Life fixed May 26 for judgement.

  • Group asks EFCC, ICPC to release investigation reports on Ogun LG funds

Group asks EFCC, ICPC to release investigation reports on Ogun LG funds

A group, Lygel Youths & Leadership Initiative (LYLI), has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) to release their investigation reports into the local government funds in Ogun.

LYLI, through its Executive Director, Lekan Oladapo, made the call at a press briefing on Mobday in Abuja.

The group, which expressed concern about the management of local government funds in the state, alleged lack of openness in the award of contracts.

“The most glaring internal crisis of this administration remains the strangulation of the third tier of government.

“Without a robust and functioning local government administration, there is hardly any programme of the Federal Government that can work in any part of the country, Ogun State inclusive.

“We recall the 2023 petition by the former Chairman of Ijebu East Local Government, Hon. Wale Adedayo, who courageously affirmed that the Ogun State Government had consistently withheld federal allocations and Ecological Funds meant for the 20 local governments in the state.

“Despite the administration’s denials, the reality on ground has indeed shown that the Local Governments have operated under a ‘zero allocation’ reality, where they are unable to perform basic functions like rural road grading or maintaining primary health centres without begging the state executive for ‘intervention funds.’”

According to the group, this is a direct affront to the Supreme Court’s ruling on financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local governments.

“It is also a direct assault on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to reposition the grassroots for quality developments,” it said.

The group also questioned what it described as the “closed-door” nature of public procurement in Ogun.

It, therefore, challenged the state government to show the people a major, newly constructed and fully functional state’s hospital built in the last seven years.

According to the group, out of over 530 Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs), the administration admitted in late 2023 to only renovating about 42—less than 10 per cent.

It, therefore, urged the EFCC and the ICPC to make public their reports on how the funds allocated to the local government areas in the state were spent.

  • Expert tasks women on regular check-up to prevent complications, sudden death

A health expert, Mrs Remilekun Akinfenwa, has urged women to prioritise regular, routine medical screenings to prevent medical complications that may cause sudden death.

    Akinfenwa, the Director of Nursing,
Federal Medical Centre, Keffi in Nasarawa State, gave the advice at the Peculiar Good Women Fellowship 20th Anniversary of the Cherubim and Seraphim Movement Church, Daki-Biyu District, Kubwa, Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event, which began on Saturday, came to conclusion with a thanksgiving service on Sunday with a title: “Mystery of Grace.”

The director, while delivering a lecture as part of the activities of the event, urged women to take good care of themselves and eat healthily.

She advised them to take appropriate steps when they notice any strange development in their body.

“A lot of women died due to ignorance,” she said.

Akinfenwa, who urged the women to adopt health management system that improves lifestyle, emphasised the need for routine medical check-up.

“Even cancer is curable when it is diagnosed early.

“So we should engage in regular check-up,” she said.

Akinfenwa, who is also a pastor at Rehoboth Chapel, Lugbe, cited
Proverb 27: 12 to substantiate her call for regular medical examination.

“Proverb 27:12 says, ‘a prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.’

“Therefore, wisdom will lead a man or woman to anticipate danger and to take action,” she said.

She listed other good health habits to include healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate rest, enough water intake, among others.

She said issues of health are all-encompassing involving physical, social, emotional and spiritual well-being.

“Some people end up committing suicide when they are faced with challenges because they are not spiritually healthy.

“According to World Health Organisation, health is a state of complete wellness physically, emotionally, psychologically, socially and mentally,” she said.

Speaking on the titled: “Managing Menopause,” Akinfenwa allayed fears of women about the transition stage.

“It is a natural biological transition in a woman’s life when her menstrual periods stop permanently.

“This is a transition. So it is not a disease; it is normal.

“And we should prepare towards this stage because it is a normal developmental stage of a woman.

“Therefore, we should know that life continues and our modification to new life is important.”

According to her, menopause usually begins from 45 to 55 years, and the average age for menopause is 50 years.

“But some women may experience menopause at early age,” she added.

The expert named the three stages as perimenopausal, menopause and post-menopause stages.

Guest Pastor, Mrs Radex Olutimilehin, while speaking on a topic, “Christian Patenting: Building Intentional Relationships between Our Children, Behaviour and Discipline,” urged husbands and wives to make love the bedrock of their family.

“There are some families today, where there is no relationship between the wives and the husbands because there is no love.

“The first thing is you must begin this; show love to your husband, say good things to your husband.

“When there is friendliness between husband and wife, it fosters good relationship.

“According to Proverb 17:17, when there is a problem in life, our family should be the greatest support,” she said.

Olutimilehin, who also urged the men to take good care of their wives and love them, said parents should always listen to their children, refrain from nagging, favouritism and discipline with love.

She advised every family to inculcate positive parenting attitude, and jettisoned authoritative or permissive parenting behaviour.

“Your first goal as Christians is to introduce your children to God; lead them to Christ,” she said.

The cleric urged the women to be respectful and submissive to their husbands.

“You fathers, always listen to your wives.
God gives the women the power to assist their husbands.

“Men who listen to their wives make headway,” she said.

According to her, the greatest gift any man can give to their children is to love their wives.

“Most women cannot combine marriage with success and that is why their marriages crash.

    “Therefore, women should be respectful.

“If you have the attitude of submission, your husband will love you and our family will receive the mercy of God and not judgment.”

Also, Pastor Funke Abegunde from the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who spoke on “Managing Conflicts in a Christian Family,” urged the parents to be good example to their children.

“You are the example for your children. You are the Bible they read, so teach them the word of God and ethical values,” she said.

The cleric called on the parents to avoid acts of anger, bad communications and be intentional to build their homes through forgiveness and words of God.

Earlier, Captain of the Peculiar Good Women Fellowship, Patsor Remi Olatundun, described the 20th anniversary as “a journey of grace.”

“I want to thank you all for your efforts because it is women that build church and make church to progress.

“Therefore, let us live in love and togetherness.

“God is love and as we move into the 21st year, let us work together.

“Let us grow in the spirit and jettison all the works of flesh; anger, malice, etc,” she said.

Also Pastor and Prophetess Mrs Adejoke Ogundipe, wife of the senior pastor of the church, encouraged the women to fight all battles through prayers, love and faith.

Ogundipe thanked the 2026 Good Women Anniversary Committee for a job well done.

NAN reports that the event witnessed song presentations and prayers were offered to families, the church and the country.
