Kano:  The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public health and curbing the circulation of substandard drugs.

This follows the seizure of counterfeit medicines worth over N200 million in the state.

The seizure was carried out by the Kano State Committee on Motor Parks and Other Public Places during a raid within the Kano metropolis.

Balarabe Abdullahi-Kiru, Director, Public Enlightenment, Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs made the disclosure in a statement issued to Newsmen in Kano on Sunday.

According to the statement, the drugs confiscated during the operation lacked approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

It said the operation was jointly conducted by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

The statement noted that the raid was led by the committee’s Chairman, Maj. Adamu Abubakar-Usman (Rtd), following intelligence reports and the government’s ongoing efforts to ensure only safe, approved medicines were sold to the public.

Speaking during the operation, Abubakar-Usman disclosed that the fake drugs were found in an abandoned building where they were stored under extreme heat and unhygienic conditions.

“These drugs lacked NAFDAC certification and therefore pose a serious danger to public health, especially to women and children.

“Storing drugs under excessive heat and poor sanitary conditions can compromise their efficacy and cause serious harm to consumers, particularly when they are not approved by the relevant authorities,” he added.

He said the committee would continue to collaborate with security and health agencies to combat the trafficking of fake drugs and ensure that offenders are prosecuted.

Also speaking, Dr Danyaro Ali-Yakasai, Special Adviser to the Governor on Policy and Special Development, urged the public to verify the authenticity of medicines before purchase and to report suspected sellers of fake or substandard drugs.

He reiterated the state government’s resolve not to tolerate activities capable of endangering citizens’ lives.

Earlier, Ya’u Malam-Yakubu, Assistant Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Kano Command, said the confiscated items included 55 cartons of Super Sexy, 144 cartons of Bold Brown/Body Bliss, 70 cartons of Lion King/Hygra, and three sacks of empty packs. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

  • FG’s NEW POLICY ON CONTRACT VARIATION WILL SAVE COST, ENSURE TRANSPARENCY- GROUP

FG’s NEW POLICY ON CONTRACT VARIATION WILL SAVE COST, ENSURE TRANSPARENCY- GROUP

    By Bassey Asuquo

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded the federal government’s new policy on contract variation across the ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

The new policy seeks to centralize contracts variation and augmentation under the authority of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), which is to serve as a clearing house for such adjustments before submission to an approving authority such as the Federal Executive Council, Ministerial Tenders Board and other approving authorities including the National Assembly and the National Judicial Council.

In a statement by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Segun Ogedengbe, TMVs noted that the latest guidelines supersede those of 2013 which required presidential approval for variations above 15% of the initial contract sum of N1 billion.

It said: “We note that based on the new policy which is derived from Section 5 (a) and (o) of the Public Procurement Act 2007 under the supervision of the Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP work variations of N10 billion and above must go through the Federal Executive Council, National Judicial Council and National Assembly Tenders Board.

“The new policy encompasses the comprehensive guidelines on the implementation of the revised policy of the variations of contract sums and mandatory use of final designs.

“Additionally, the guidelines stated that the augmentation/variation sum, not the total revised cost, will henceforth determine the approving authority. For works variation of N5 billion to below N10 billion, they will go to the Ministerial Tenders Board while works variation of N75 million to below N5 billion will go to the Parastatal/ Judicial Tenders Board.

“It is noted that the latest guidelines supersede the 2013 guidelines which required presidential approval for variations above 15% of the initial contract sum of N1 billion.

“Also under the new guidelines no variation or fluctuation claim shall proceed to the relevant approving authority without a BPP Certificate of No Objection.

“We consider the new guidelines as apt in Nigeria’s contract management and administration as they will help plug loopholes and restore sanity and transparency in the system.”

The group applauded the Tinubu administration for activating the new policy as a means of promoting good governance for the benefit of all Nigerians.

2027 election will involve choosing between reform consolidation and policy reversal, group insists*

    By Danladi Ahmed

The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF) says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s acceptance speech after securing the ruling party’s mandate for a second term has placed the 2027 election in its proper national context.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Danjuma Sada, the group described it as a choice between consolidating difficult but necessary reforms and returning Nigeria to the failed policies that weakened the economy for years.

TSF argued that President Tinubu’s speech after accepting the presidential nomination of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was not merely a political declaration, but a clear policy statement on continuity, national recovery, security, productivity and democratic consolidation.

According to the Forum, President Tinubu’s message was significant because it does not pretend that Nigeria’s challenges have disappeared. Rather, it acknowledges the pressure facing citizens while making the case that the responsible path is to deepen reforms, protect early gains and prevent a reversal to policies that produced fiscal instability, weak public investment, infrastructure decay and economic vulnerability.

“Nigeria cannot afford to treat 2027 as a referendum on temporary discomfort alone. It must be seen as a national decision on whether the country will consolidate reforms or return to the failed choices that created the crisis in the first place,” TSF said.

The Forum noted that President Tinubu’s speech correctly framed continuity as a matter of national responsibility, not political convenience.

“Like many people, we are aware that the first phase of the administration has been devoted to correcting structural distortions in subsidy payments, foreign exchange management, revenue mobilisation, public finance and investment planning.

“And while these reforms have come with difficult adjustment pressures, abandoning them midway would expose the country to greater instability and reverse the foundations already being laid for recovery, investment, productivity and inclusive growth.

“For us, the President’s reference to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund was particularly important because it shows that reform is not only about macroeconomic stability, but also about expanding opportunity for ordinary Nigerians.

“In two years, we have seen how the education loan scheme has opened a new pathway for students from low and middle-income families to access tertiary education without being shut out by financial hardship.

“It is one of the strongest examples of how the administration is using public policy to promote social mobility, youth empowerment and human capital development,” the group added.

On the power sector, TSF welcomed the President’s emphasis on metering, debt settlement and sector bankability.

“The Presidential Metering Initiative as well as efforts to close the metering gap, and the structured settlement of verified legacy debts owed to generation companies and gas suppliers are necessary steps toward rebuilding confidence in the electricity value chain.

“We believe that we cannot achieve industrialisation, manufacturing expansion, digital growth or small business competitiveness without a power sector that is financially stable, investable and capable of delivering reliable electricity to homes and industries.

“So Power reform is not a slogan. It requires metering, liquidity, investor confidence, gas supply stability and disciplined regulation. The Tinubu administration is addressing the foundations that previous governments avoided or postponed,” TSF said.

On the economy, the Forum said the President’s defence of subsidy removal, exchange rate reform, new tax laws and improved fiscal coordination should be understood within the broader need to move Nigeria away from wasteful consumption subsidies and weak revenue systems toward a more productive national economy.

TSF said the removal of distortions in the economy is already helping to restore the basis for stronger reserves, improved revenue performance, better investment planning and more credible public finance.

It, however, urged the Federal Government to continue expanding targeted support for vulnerable households, workers, small businesses, students and farmers so that the benefits of reform can reach citizens faster and more visibly.

TSF also cautioned opposition politicians against criticising without presenting credible alternatives, saying Nigeria’s challenges require practical plans, not slogans.

“Those who seek to lead the country must explain whether they intend to reverse subsidy reforms, return to multiple exchange rates, weaken fiscal discipline, abandon power sector restructuring, halt strategic capital projects or dismantle the reforms now restoring investor confidence.

“The President, on his part, has made it clear that the work is unfinisHonesty is important. The answer to unfinished reform is not reversal; it is disciplined continuity, faster implementation and stronger delivery.

“President Tinubu’s acceptance speech has offered Nigerians a clear choice: to consolidate progress or risk reversal; to build on reform or retreat into the past; to strengthen the foundations of a modern Nigeria or return to the policies that held the country down,” it noted.

  • 2027 Elections: Why Tinubu’s acceptance speech as APC flagbearer will resonate with Nigerians-Group

2027 Elections: Why Tinubu’s acceptance speech as APC flagbearer will resonate with Nigerians-Group

    By Iyiola Olalere
Now that the line-up of candidates for the 2027 Presidential election is almost complete, the Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) is convinced that President Bola Tinubu’s acceptance speech after his endorsement for a second term by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will resonate with many Nigerians on the need for continuity of the ongoing impactful reforms.

This, according to the group, is because the President’s reforms already referenced by the World Bank as a global template for emerging markets, are yielding tremendous dividends.

In a statement by its Chairman Emeka Nwankpa and Secretary Dapo Okubanjo, TMSG argued that President Tinubu’s solemn pledge to build on the reforms went a long way to convince several appreciative Nigerians who are now seeing a better economic trajectory in spite of the initial pains.

It said: ” We note that the stage is gradually being set for the January 2027 Presidential election with the emergence of opposition candidates, so it was not surprising that President Bola Tinubu is using every opportunity to reaffirm what his administration has been doing in the past three years.

“For us, there was no better time to pitch for a second term in office than during his acceptance of the mandate of more than 10 million registered members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) where the president made a strong, and compelling argument for continuity of the reforms.

”From all accounts, among his presidential rivals, he is comfortably way ahead of the curve having shown a strong fighting chance of driving the reform agenda to its logical conclusion.

“We acknowledge his position on the reforms initiated by his administration since assuming office and the initial pains but we also commend his uncanny boldness and insistence that difficult policy decisions were necessary to put the country on the path to long-term growth.

“It is a matter of public record that the foundation for the Tinubu reforms was the removal of fuel subsidy and the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market, and we affirm that these were necessary steps to stabilise the economy.

“So we make bold to say that President Tinubu’s assertion that the economy had ‘undergone significant structural reform, supported by new tax laws and fiscal policies that have boosted revenue collection for the federation’ is a statement of fact.

“This is clearly obvious from revenue accruing to the federation account which has seen a consequential increase in distributable revenue to all tiers of government from slightly above N900 billion in June 2023 to N2.036 trillion in April 2026

“But we are also of the view that the groundwork as well as the heavy lifting done by the Tinubu administration has to be sustained rather than disrupted by knee-jerk actions that could set the country back.”

TMSG argued that some of the achievements touted by President Tinubu on the economy are tangible enough to be referenced and promptly backed by international agencies and investors.

“The President also did not mince words in outlining achievements in macroeconomic management, infrastructural development, and education financing through the Nigerian Education Loan (NELFUND) which has now disbursed more than N282 billion to over 1.5 million beneficiaries in just about two years of operation.

“We are of the view that, despite heckles by those who still refuse to see the bigger picture, the reforms are now resonating with many Nigerians who have refused to be swayed by messengers of doom and gloom who are even using current fuel prices triggered by the ongoing Middle East crisis as a talking point.

“Our response to them is that if indeed the economy is not on the path to long-term growth and sustainability, the World Bank, for instance, would not be using the reforms as a global template for emerging markets.

“Also, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would not list Nigeria among the 10 leading contributors to the global economy. In fact, Nigeria ranks 6th on the list and is the only African country in the list of top 10 contributors to global real GDP growth.

“This is aside from the various Final investment Decisions (FID) by International Oil Companies (IOCs) including Shell, TotalEnergies and ExxonMobil running into billions of dollars in response to new incentives introduced by the Tinubu administration to make the country more attractive for investments in the oil and gas sector.

“We need to add here that no other country in Africa has attracted the sort of FIDs Nigeria has recorded in the past two years. This is not by luck, or chance. It is the result of hard thinking.

“And coming at a time that Nigeria’s net foreign reserves rose to $34.8 billion from $3.99 billion, and gross reserves hitting the $50 billion mark, we are convinced that President Tinubu’s message of continuity will resonate with Nigerians more than the gloomy picture being painted by opposition figures,” it added.

The group urged Nigerians not to be swayed by the opposition but to show more trust in the process emplaced by the President Tinubu administration.

  • ADC: New judge fixes June 3 for Nafiu-Bala Gombe’s suit against Mark, Aregbesola

ADC: New judge fixes June 3 for Nafiu-Bala Gombe’s suit against Mark, Aregbesola

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixes June 3 for commencement of hearing in a suit filed by Nafiu-Bala Gombe to stop David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from parading themselves as leaders of the party.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered on Sunday that hearing notices had since been issued and served on lawyers to the parties in the suit.

One of the lawyers confirmed the development to NAN in a telephone chat.

The case, filed by the aggrieved former National Deputy Chairman of ADC, was earlier before Justice Emeka Nwite of a sister court.

The matter was, however, reassigned to Justice Lifu, following Justice Nwite’s recent elevation to the Court of Appeal.

The National Judicial Council (NJC), at its 111th meeting on May 13, had recommended the appointment of 12 new justices of the Court of Appeal, including Justice Nwite, to President Bola Tinubu for approval.

Gombe, in the suit, is seeking an order restraining Sen. Mark, the embattled National Chairman of ADC; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the National Secretary, and members of their interim National Working Committee (NWC) from parading themselves as the party’s leaders.

He had argued that the emergence of Mark, Aregbesola and other NWC members as party’s leaders breached the provisions of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.

Gombe had sued ADC, Mark, Aregbesola, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Ralph Nwosu as 1st to 5th defendants respectively in the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025.

Nwosu was the former ADC National Chairman who stepped down for David Mark leadership of the party.

Justice Nwite had, on April 14, adjourned the case sine die (indefinitely) following Gombe’s request to await the Supreme Court’s judgment in the appeal filed by Mark.

However, the Supreme Court, on April 30, set aside the order made by the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordering the maintenance of status quo ante bellum in the leadership dispute in ADC, on which INEC acted in derecognising the Mark-led leadership of the party.

The apex court ordered the parties to return to the FHC for expeditious hearing of the case filed by Gombe, an aggrieved chieftain of the party.

NAN observes that INEC had, since, complied with the Supreme Court judgmemt by reversing the removal of Mark-led leadership from the commission’s official portal.

When the case came up on May 8 before Justice Nwite following the Supreme Court order, Luka Haruna, SAN, who appeared for Gombe, sought the transfer of the case from Nwite to another judge.

Although no reason was given, Haruna said a letter had been written to the CJ to the effect.

But lawyers to the ADC, Mark, Aregbesola and Nwosu, disagreed with the application.

ADC’s counsel, Rilwan Okpanachi; Suleiman Usman, SAN, who appeared for Mark; Mohammed Sheriff, who represented Aregbesola; P. I. Oyewole, counsel for Chief Ralph Nwosu, and other lawyers in the case vehemently opposed Gombe’s request for the case transfer.

The lawyers, who said that Gombe’s letter had not been served on them, described Haruna’s application as “an ambush.”

They also considered the request as an attempt to fustrate the order of Appeal Court for accelerated hearing which was sustained by the Supreme Court.

The defence lawyers, who described Gombe’s application as ‘forum shopping,” said the only good thing the application for the transfer of the matter had achieved was that the intergrity of the court had been confirmed.

They said this was so because nothing tangible had happened since the last adjournment.

The lawyers said they maintained absolute confidence in the intergrity, impartiality and sound judicial discretion of Justice Nwite’s court.

“The so-called letter in a normal view, is a fundamental breach of procedure, amounting in law to an illegality and not a mere irregularity,” they argued.

They said they would have insisted that the court should go on with the hearing but for a certified true copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgmemt which was yet to be obtained, in order for the trial court to be properly guided by it.

They, therefore, sought an indefinite adjournment to enable them furnish the judge with the CTC of the judgment and Justice Nwite adjourned the case sine die (indefinitely), pending when its CTC is gotten.

NAN reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar emerged as ADC presidential candidate on May 27 after defeating two other aspirants, including Rotimi Amaechi, former Minister of Transportation, at the party’s national convention.

Also, Dumebi Kachikwu, in a national convention conducted by another faction of ADC, emerged the presidential candidate of the party for the 2027 general election.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the party was adopted by factional members of the party as sole presidential candidate on May 24.

Onyia emerges NANS Senate President, opponents congratulate him

Comrade Moses Ibeabuchi Onyia has been elected Senate President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) following a tightly contested election at the national convention held in Abuja.

Onyia, pioneer Coordinator of Zone F (South-East) and a Master’s degree student in Philosophy at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, was declared winner after securing the highest votes from accredited delegates drawn from tertiary institutions across the country.

The statement was made available to newsmen on Sunday by the Chairman of the convention, Comrade Umar Faruk Musa, in Abuja.

The election, which attracted delegates from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, was characterised by intense lobbying, bloc consultations and strategic negotiations as contenders battled for control of key positions within the student body.

The electoral committee announced Onyia’s victory after a prolonged collation process, amid tight security and a charged political atmosphere within the convention arena.

Shortly after the announcement, Onyia’s main rival, including Olisa Alfred Nwuruku, Charles ijieoma, Alfred Jicenta Chinedu, Chinalo Okoli and Kenechukwu Aneke, were said to have reached out both privately and publicly to congratulate him on his emergence, signalling a rare show of post-election camaraderie among the aspirants.

In his acceptance speech, Onyia described his victory as a mandate for unity, accountability and renewed student leadership across the country.

“This mandate is a call to service. Nigerian students must speak with one voice, strengthen internal cohesion, and ensure that their interests are effectively represented at all levels,” he said.

He pledged to run an inclusive administration focused on student welfare, academic reforms, and stronger engagement with relevant government and education authorities.

Onyia also referenced his experience as pioneer Coordinator of NANS Zone F, noting that his leadership exposure in the South-East had equipped him with deeper insight into the challenges facing students nationwide.

He assured stakeholders that his administration would prioritise unity within the association and work to rebuild trust among student blocs across the country.

The Abuja convention is expected to shape the leadership direction of NANS for the new tenure, as newly elected officials prepare to assume office.

Erosion Cuts-Off Oji–Awgu Federal Road as Onwuegbu, Anyaegbudike Lead Emergency Inspection Tour

Erosion Cuts-Off Oji–Awgu Federal Road as Onwuegbu, Anyaegbudike Lead Emergency Inspection Tour

Erosion menace has cut-off Oji–Awgu Federal Road and halting vehicular movement along the critical road corridor serving as major transport link between many affected communities in Oji River and Awgu council areas in Enugu State.

It would be recalled that the latest development followed Friday night’s downpour and the people of the area found out the devastated and cut-off road early on Saturday.

Leading leaders of the two local government areas on emergency inspection tour of the road, the Member representing Aninri/Awgu/Oji River Federal Constituency, Engr. Anayo Onwuegbu, described the incident as unfortunate and worrisome.

Onwuegbu noted that the portion of the section of the Oji–Awgu Federal Road had been completely cut-off by severe erosion following the heavy rainfall.

According to him, this is barely 48 hours I raised concerns over the growing threat posed by erosion at the affected road.

Assessing the damaged portion of the section of the road, the Federal lawmaker appealed to the Federal Ministry of Works to treat the situation as an emergency.

Onwuegbu, who is a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stressed an urgent need for immediate intervention and reconstruction to restore connectivity and ameliorate the suffering of the people.

Corroborating, the Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area, Hon. Greg Anyaegbudike, commended Onwuegbu for his prompt response to the incident.

Anyaegbudike, who is a Chieftain of the APC, appreciated the Federal lawmaker for facilitating the Federal Controller of Work, Enugu State immediate visit to the site and road.

The chairman urged him to continue engaging the Federal Ministry of Works Headquarters in Abuja to secure approval for urgent reconstruction works on the road.

Speaking at the site, the Federal Controller of Works, Enugu State, Engr. Smart Emesim, expressed shock at the rapid deterioration of the road infrastructure.

Emesim attributed the erosion damage to the improper termination of culvert outlets, which accelerated water flow and undermined the structural integrity of the road embankment.

According to him, the affected drainage structures were not included in the original contract awarded to the company that constructed the road.

He assured that the Federal Ministry of Works would take swift action and initiate the necessary processes to address the situation with utmost urgency.

During the inspection, the delegation assessed and examined four additional locations along the same road corridor that are also under serious threat from advancing erosion.

The inspection team also included Member representing Oji River State Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Osita Eze and the Chairman of Awgu Local Government Area, Hon. Uche Okolo, among other leaders within the area.

The joint inspection and assessment, which concluded with a group photograph at the affected site, underscored a united front to push for urgent intervention and long-term solutions to ensuring safe movement of people and goods along the road.
