World Bank’s affirmation of Tinubu economic reforms, clear message on steady growth of Nigeria’s economy, TMSG insists

    By Iyiola Olalere

The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has described the World Bank’s latest assessment of the economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu as a testament to the hard work the current administration is putting into building a more resilient and sustainable economy.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Emeka Nwankpa and Secretary Dapo Okubanjo, TMSG pointed out that the Bank’s description of the reforms as a global reference point in implementation and outcome is the clearest indication yet that the President is indeed on course.

The statement reads in part: ” We are aware that, as a global lender working with low and middle-income countries to reduce poverty, the World Bank is not known to be usually effusive in its commentary on the Nigerian economy, especially against the background of several missed opportunities over the years.

“So, for the bank to have said, through its Managing Director in charge of operations, Anne Bjerde, that Nigeria is now a ‘frequent global reference point in discussions on reform implementation and outcomes’, then it is obvious that the current administration is doing a good job of managing the economy.

More interesting is her commendation of the President Bola Tinubu administration for ‘maintaining the momentum of economic reforms despite the political and social pressures that often accompany such measures.’

“For other close watchers of the Tinubu reforms and us, the World Bank’s position is not unexpected, because we know that no discerning individual or group would be quick to dismiss the ongoing reforms and their impact, despite the initial pains.

“We, however, note that it is not every day that the World Bank has good things to say about Nigeria, and this is why opposition figures in the current political dispensation are always quick to reference the Bank’s position on issues ranging from poverty to economic growth projections.

“We wonder what those politicians who take delight in quoting the Bank would have to say now that it has not only endorsed President Tinubu’s reforms as a success, but also made it clear that it is now a global reference on reforms implementation and outcomes.

“We invite Nigerians who are always quick to hold on to political rhetoric from such opposition elements to take a closer look at what the global lender is saying about the trajectory of the economy on President Tinubu’s watch.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the President has, since assuming office, embarked on an economic reform agenda anchored on the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of multiple foreign exchange windows.

“These have opened the doors to several other reforms, including in the oil sector, where Nigeria has now retaken its place as Africa’s leading investment destination, and the ongoing tax reforms, which are targeted at widening the country’s tax base without necessarily piling burdens on low-income earners and small businesses.

“It was not surprising that the President reiterated his ‘no going back’ stance on the reforms to the delegation while also acknowledging, yet again, that they were initially painful and difficult at the beginning.

“We, however, note that President Tinubu used his engagement with the World Bank leadership to outline how the administration would drive agricultural mechanisation through dedicated centres that would support farmers with equipment and seeds to improve productivity.

“This is clearly the next step to boost local production and guarantee food security, using the 2,000 tractors procured from Belarus which are expected to be fully deployed within the first quarter of 2026.”

The group urged Nigerians to pay more attention to the assessment of the Tinubu reforms by rating agencies and global investors, rather than those of local politicians bent on playing politics

Nursing, Midwifery Council inducts 206 foreign -trained Nurses

    By Mohammed Baba Busu

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), on Thursday inducted no fewer than 206 foreign -trained Nurses into the profession.

Speaking at the historic event in Abuja on Thursday, the Registrar/CEO of the council, Alhaji Alhassan Ndagi stated that the inducted nurses graduated from 15 institutions in foreign countries and had their adaptation programme in ten institutions in Nigeria.

The nurses were inducted into the profession after completing a compulsory six-month adaptation programme conducted in 10 Nigerian universities and passing the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) professional examination.

He said, “the inductees graduated from 15 institutions across several countries, including the Niger Republic (62), Ghana (35), Cameroon (35), India (22), Cyprus (19), the Philippines (9), Sudan (9), Egypt (5), Turkey (2), and Ukraine (1).

As part of the registration process, all successful foreign-trained nurses are required to undergo formal induction, similar to their counterparts trained in Nigeria.

According to Ndagi, the council is unwaveringly committed to providing well-equipped nurses and midwives who can deliver high -quality nursing care at all levels of the country’s healthcare system and beyond.

The registrar appealed to the newly inducted nurses to prioritise the interests of Nigerians and willingly serve the country.

He said that this was more imperative especially in areas with significant healthcare needs such as hard-to-reach communities.

Ndagi further encouraged them to be exemplary ambassadors of the nursing profession in the discharge of their arduous responsibilities.

The registrar also urged, “Demonstrate humility, discipline and respect in your interactions with the public.

“Let kindness and compassion guide your care for all patients.

“Practice in accordance with the higher ethical standards of the profession and uphold the fundamental responsibilities of a professional nurse wherever your career may take you to.”

He further admonished the inductees to prioritise the well-being of their patients, advising, “but remember to also care for yourselves.”

Ndagi also urged them to embrace the culture of lifelong learning and explore opportunities available for self development and acquisition of higher Degrees as well as ascendancy in the nursing profession.

He advised, “It is important to contribute to the elevation of the nursing profession to an enviable pinnacle.

“Discipline yourself in using social media especially at period of your professional duties.

“Please note that you are now solely responsible for your nursing actions and you should maintain high level of professionality in all you do.”

Ndagi reminded the new nurses that they would work under strict supervision of seasoned colleagues at their internship centres.

Ndagi explained that Nigeria was no longer facing a shortage of trained nurses, following the expansion of training capacity and the introduction of new retention measures.

Responding to concerns about Nigerians studying nursing abroad despite the availability of accredited programmes locally, he acknowledged the concern but said the number involved was relatively small.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the occasion and the immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, said reforms introduced by the Federal Government were gradually reversing the trend of outward migration.

Ganduje expressed optimism that ongoing reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration would further strengthen the health sector and encourage professionals to remain in the country.

“To now finish the internship and decide to go back to where they were coming from after the government has spent some investment on them? I assure you it will be a different story because the reforms undertaken by the present government will turn the tide,” he said.

According to him, improvements in health service delivery were already influencing the decision of many Nigerians trained abroad to return and practise locally.

“I think it is a welcome development because when we have our own children studying abroad and then coming back and joining the service, that is very encouraging,”

Other speakers at the event advised the inductees, who will proceed on a one-year internship followed by the National Youth Service, to take their training seriously, uphold confidentiality, and adapt to the evolving needs of patients.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to outstanding inductees and the institution that produced the overall best inductee, Cynthia Okwor.

The inductees also took the Oath of Allegiance, pledging to maintain confidentiality and abstain from acts harmful to patients.

Abdul-Aziz Umar Ganduje, son of former Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Thursday, paid a visit to the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, at the latter’s Miller Road residence in Kano.

Photographs from the visit, shared on Facebook by Kwankwaso’s media aide, Saifullahi Hassan, showed Abdul-Aziz dressed in the signature white-and-red Kwankwasiyya attire. He was received by Kwankwaso in the company of the Kano State deputy governor, Comrade Abdulsalam Gwarzo.

The images, however, were not accompanied by any official statement or caption explaining the purpose of the visit.

The development has since generated conversations among political observers in Kano and beyond given the long-standing political rivalry between Kwankwaso and Abdul-Aziz’s father, the immediate-past national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr.Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

The rivalry between both political gladiators intensified recently with the defection of Kwankwaso’s protege, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNP) to Ganduje’s APC.

Excellent governance performance of Mbah, propels 2 million registration benchmark – APC National Deputy Chairman
The National Deputy Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Emma Eneukwu, says the excellent governance and infrastructure performance of Gov. Peter Mbah is propelling attainment of the two million registration benchmark.
Eneukwu said this on Thursday in Enugu while briefing newsmen on the progress of the ongoing APC E-Registration in Enugu State.
According to him, the excellent performance of His Excellency, Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in Enugu State has mandated and propelled the good people of the state to reciprocate by registering en masse.
The APC leader noted that the two million registration target was an ambitious but highly achievable goal.
“Enuga State has large population of youths and professionals looking for a credible political platform, which only APC has provided.
“With sustained mobilisation and effective leadership engagement, the numbers are realistic.
“Beyond figures, the enthusiasm and momentum on the ground suggest a party on the move,” he said.
Eneukwu further explained that the e-registration remained a clear signal that the party is repositioning and expanding its grassroots base in  Enugu State.
“The process has been largely peaceful, technology-driven and reflective of growing political interest among the people, especially at the community level.
“Overall, the APC e-registration is about inclusion, growth and giving people a voice and that is the real strength of the process,” he said.
The APC leader also debunked unsubstantiated claims of opposition political parties that civil servants are being forced to register, adding that “there is no official policy or directive supporting such allegation.”
He said, “The exercise is voluntary and individuals are free to make their political choices.
“In a competitive political climate, such claims are not unusual; but facts on the ground indicate participation driven solely by interest and never coercion.”

CCIDESOR says economic emasculation of LGs breeds insecurity, joblessness, poverty at grassroots

The Citizens Centre for Integrated Development and Social Rights (CCIDESOR), an NGO, says current economic and fiscal emasculation of Local Government Councils breed insecurity, joblessness and poverty at the grassroots nationwide.

The Executive Director of CCIDESOR, Dr Emeka Ononamadu, disclosed this to newsmen in Enugu during a Stakeholders Roundtable on Freedom of Information Act on Thursday.
The roundtable, which was themed: Reviving Local Governance: Citizens-Led Advocacy for Local Government Budget Accountability and Reform in Nigeria, was organised by CCIDESOR in partnership with Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (SituationRoom).

Ononamadu said that the near collapse of the council areas fiscal, revenue generation and job creation capacities had left huge level of impoverishment and deprivation which had reduced the standard of living of Nigerians nationwide.
“We are calling on the political actors to allow every tier of government to function effectively, so that we can hold each tier accountable for the resources they are receiving both internally and from the federation account.
“When you talk about emasculation of the council areas; is the state government you are talking about; that have emasculated them.
“The state governments have, like we have found, contracted out most of the functions of the local government to their political party members and personal cronies and it’s happening all over the country.
“We are sad that this is happening and it is making people living at the local council areas and council workers to be unproductive and redundant,” he said.

The executive director lauded President Bola Tinubu for following up on his belief on local government financial autonomy to a victory at the Supreme Court, adding “we need action on the apex court pronouncement.”
Ononamadu noted that the council areas also needed fiscal, political and administrative autonomy to fully stimulate the local economy to steady growth and.prosperity.
On fiscal autonomy, he noted that council areas needed to generate its own yearly budget, internally generated revenue and create short and long term investment concern for its survival.

“There is a need for 100 per cent political autonomy of credible and people-elected leadership and not the present governor’s handpicked administrators answerable to the governor alone.
“The council authorities must have full administrative control over all issues and people living within the council area, by making administrative council laws for the good and prosperity of all,” he said.
Earlier, State President of National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Enugu State Chapter, Mr Udoagha Ani, stressed the need to revive the local council system to effectively work and deliver good governance at the grassroots.
Ani noted that an effective council area would reduce pressure at state and federal levels of government as well as give vast majority of Nigerians a sense of belonging and willingness to support development in their localities.

AXA Mansard records 22% growth in insurance revenue

    By Taiye Olayemi

AXA Mansard Insurance Plc says it has reported a 22 per cent increase in gross insurance revenue to N160.56 billion in its 2025 financial year.

The company in a statement on Monday said this was driven largely by strong renewals and broad-based growth across its business segments, with health insurance leading the expansion.

This is according to the company’s unaudited results for the year ended December 31, 2025.

The company said Property and Casualty revenue rose by 11 per cent to N68.48 billion from N61.88 billion in 2024, while Life and Savings grew by 14 per cent to N25.77 billion from N22.56 billion.

The Health segment recorded the highest growth, rising 40 per cent to N66.32 billion from N47.23 billion the previous year.

In spite the strong revenue performance, Profit Before Tax (PBT) fell sharply by 81 per cent to N6.12 billion from N31.69 billion in 2024.

However, the company noted that the decline was largely due to foreign exchange effects recorded in the prior year.

Commenting on the results, the Chief Financial Officer, Mrs Ngozi Ola-Israel, explained that the 2024 financial year earnings benefited from a one-off foreign exchange gain of N27 billion, compared with a N0.9 billion foreign exchange loss in the 2025 financial year.

“Excluding this non-recurring FX impact, underlying profitability improved significantly, with adjusted profit before tax rising by 46 per cent year-on-year to N6.98 billion,” she said.

‎According to her, the performance reflected disciplined underwriting, sound risk management, and continued improvements in operational efficiency.

She said this is in spite elevated claims severity and frequency in the Property and Casualty and Health portfolios.

‎Also commenting, the Chief Executive Officer, AXA Mansard Insurance Plc, Mr Kunle Ahmed, said the Group maintained a strong financial position during the year, supported by robust premium growth, prudent capital management, and adequate liquidity.

He said that while inflationary pressures and higher claims affected margins, the company’s balance sheet and cash generation remained resilient.

‎On regulatory compliance, Ahmed noted that the Group’s unaudited 2025 financial year numbers position it to exceed the new minimum capital requirements under the NIIRA, with over N15 billion for non-life business and N10 billion for life business.

‎Looking ahead to 2026 financial year, Ahmed said AXA Mansard’s management focus would be on accelerating profitable growth, strengthening underwriting and claims discipline, deepening cost efficiency, and investing further in digital and data capabilities to enhance customer outcomes and long-term shareholder value

POLICE LEADS JOINT FORCES; PENETRATES AGBEDE FOREST IN DARING NIGHT OPERATION, ARREST SIX SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS

In continuation of the joint clearance operations, a meticulously executed night operation that underscores the resolve of synergised security forces to confront crime at its roots was conducted. The Edo State Police Command, in the early hours of Tuesday, 3rd February 2026, carried out a daring raid deep within the Agbede Forest, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State, leading to the arrest of six suspects.

The operation was launched following a critical intelligence breakthrough provided by a kidnapped victim who was able to clearly identify the forest camp where he had been held captive. Acting decisively on this lead, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, personally led a formidable joint team comprising the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC), and local hunters into the heart of the forest under the cover of darkness.

Demonstrating precision and determination, the joint team drove for approximately three (3) hours until the end of the last accessible motorable road. From that point, the operatives advanced on foot, navigating dense forest paths and crossing three (3) locally constructed wooden bridges to reach the identified camp. The silent advance, which lasted close to two (2) additional hours, ensured tactical surprise and prevented any compromise of the mission.

Upon arrival at the location at about 3:45 a.m., the area was swiftly cordoned off in a well-coordinated encirclement, effectively cutting off all escape routes. A thorough sweep of the camp resulted in the arrest of six suspects identified as: Mikel Gendaga ‘M’, aged 41 years, from Benue State; Yusuf Abubakar ‘M’, aged 34 years, from Kano State; Isyaka Abraham ‘M’, aged 30 years, from Kogi State; Isyaka Abubakar ‘M’, aged 37 years, from Kano State; Mohammed Sumo ‘M’, aged 20 years, from Kano State; and Mohammed Abubakar ‘M’, aged 25 years, from Kano State.

The suspects are currently being profiled and subjected to intensive investigation by officers of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin City, for diligent prosecution.

Describing the operation as a clear message to criminal elements, the Commissioner of Police commends the courage, discipline, and seamless inter-agency collaboration displayed by all personnel involved. He reaffirms the Command’s determination to take the fight against organised crime to the to the abode of suspected criminals at their most remote locations and warned that Edo State forests will no longer serve as safe havens for criminals.

The Edo State Police Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring citizens that sustained intelligence-led operations will remain a key strategy in securing lives and property across the State.

  • Christian Genocide: 210 Muslims massacred in one day — MURIC

Christian Genocide: 210 Muslims massacred in one day — MURIC

Sequel to the massacre of about 210 Muslims in Kwara and Katsina States on February 4, 2026, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused promoters of the Christian genocide narrative of being bad judges and Satanic referees for closing their eyes on the killing of large numbers of Muslims while concentrating on what happened to Christians only.

The accusation by MURIC was contained in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday.

Akintola said: “About 175 Muslims were massacred in Woro town, Kwara State while another 35 Muslims were mercilessly shot and killed on Tuesday, 3rd February, 2026 in Doma village, Faskari Local Government, Ruwangodiya Constituency in the Northern part of Katsina State (https://www.straitstimes.com/world/gunmen-kill-nearly-200-in-nigerias-kwara-and-katsina-attacks).

“We are appalled by these senseless killings. We demand full protection for Nigerians of all faiths and ethnicities. Every Nigerian deserves Allah-given fundamental human right to life.

“Section 14(2)(b), Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria says: ‘The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.’ But Nigerian citizens are no longer safe. The killing of a single Nigerian is condemnable but what do we say when 210 citizens are massacred? This is one killing too many.

“We therefore call on the Federal Government (FG) to protect all its citizens, including Muslims, Christians and traditionalists. We will not be parochial like those who ignore the killing of Muslims and are calling for the protection of Christians alone. Every life matters to us. Every Nigerian should be protected no matter the faith.

“This is where America’s vow and its recurring refrain ‘to protect Christians’ alone in Nigeria assaults the psyche of the whole of humanity. It is petty, arrogant and disproportionately militant. America would have won the heart of the global community if it had declared an intention to stop indiscriminate killings in Nigeria but alas it came ‘guns ablazing’ to protect Christians only. This makes any American boot on ground in Nigeria a Christian Army with all its implications.

“The latest massacre involving an astounding number of 210 Muslims has made a mince meat of the lopsided and malicious narratives of Christian genocide, particularly Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan’s legal brief, Rev. Ezekiel Bwede Dachomo’s superfluous dramatisation, the hysterical and hypocritical tirade from Christian leaders of North Central Nigeria and the Nigerian media hype of same.

“At the risk of sounding judgemental, all the above may be seen as bad judges and Satanic referees for closing their eyes on the killing of large numbers of Muslims while concentrating on what happened to Christians only.

“Now we must ask them all: is it still Christians alone who are being killed? We may also ask America, ‘Is it Christian lives alone that matter? Are Muslims, Buddhists, Confucians, etc not homo sapiens? Won’t the world as a whole be a safer place if all human beings are protected regardless of faith, race or colour?”
