    By  Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced new State Executive, as

Former Deputy Governor, Chief Moses Alake Adeyemo, the new State Chairman.

The announcement was made at the party’s State Congress held at the Liberty Stadium, Oke Ado, Ibadan, presided over by Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle.

Speaking at the event, Oyo State Renewed Hope Ambassador, Hon. Teslim Folarin; the lawmakers representing Ido/Ibarapa Federal Constituency, Hon. Aderemi Oseni and Egbeda/Ona-Ara federal, Hon. Akin Alabim, said the party adopted a consensus arrangement to produce its state executive.

They described the move as a testament to fairness, equity and inclusiveness, following the ward and local government congresses.

‎”Today is the conclusion of the whole programme, as far as the state is concerned, today is our state congress, now you can see that our wards and Local government congresses went peacefully.

From connectivity to intelligence, global mobile industry showcases new wave of innovation

Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving beyond its role as an added feature layered onto networks and terminals and is increasingly embedded within the infrastructure that shapes how digital systems operate.

Analysts said the congress reflects a shift from concept to deployment. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for Data and Analytics at IDC EMEA, told Xinhua that AI is moving beyond marketing slogans into everyday workflows.

Over the past two decades, mobile technology expanded connectivity from isolated devices to interconnected systems. The current transition extends that trajectory by embedding intelligence throughout those connections.

BARCELONA,  (Xinhua) /Flowerbudnews:  — For years, the Mobile World Congress (MWC) was defined by what could be seen: sleeker handsets, foldable screens and sharper cameras.

At MWC 2026, the most consequential innovations are harder to photograph.

Under the banner of “The IQ Era,” this year’s gathering — marking 20 years since MWC made Barcelona its permanent home — signals a shift in the technological foundation itself. Artificial intelligence (AI) is moving beyond its role as an added feature layered onto networks and terminals and is increasingly embedded within the infrastructure that shapes how digital systems operate.

5G EVOLUTION CONTINUES, AI FORGES AHEAD

Despite the strong emphasis on AI, industry leaders stressed that the 5G journey is still unfolding.

In his opening keynote, GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath urged operators to “complete the 5G journey,” noting that 5G Standalone could add up to 187 billion U.S. dollars in additional mobile revenues and that markets with broader 5G adoption are already seeing stronger growth.

He also described telecom operators as “a foundational layer of the AI stack,” highlighting the role of networks in enabling real-time intelligence at the edge for billions of users.

China Mobile announced a 5G-Advanced initiative aimed at strengthening network performance to support AI devices, connected vehicles and immersive services, reflecting how operators are adapting to evolving usage patterns.

Network architecture is expanding as well. Andrea Folgueiras, Global Chief Technology and Information Officer of Telefonica, said the company is exploring direct-to-device satellite technologies to better understand how satellite connectivity can complement advanced mobile networks and help meet connectivity needs in remote areas of Europe.

Analysts said the congress reflects a shift from concept to deployment. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president for Data and Analytics at IDC EMEA, told Xinhua that AI is moving beyond marketing slogans into everyday workflows.

“In the last couple of years, it was all about the hype. Now it’s about what is already happening,” he said, adding that enterprises adopting AI-assisted processes are unlikely to revert to previous models.

He dismissed comparisons to the dot-com bubble, arguing that current AI investments are supported by existing infrastructure and practical productivity gains.

As networks expand both capacity and coverage, AI is increasingly shaping not only how those networks are used but what they enable.

FROM HARDWARE SPECTACLE TO STRUCTURAL CHANGE

The exhibition halls still feature eye-catching devices. Honor unveiled a “Robot Phone” integrating embodied AI interaction and advanced imaging capabilities.

At the launch event, Honor Chief Executive Officer Li Jian said the company’s newly proposed AHI (Augmented Human Intelligence) concept emphasizes a “people-centered” approach, integrating intelligence quotient with emotional intelligence to enhance human adaptability in a rapidly changing world.

Lenovo presented AI-enabled enterprise devices designed to embed intelligent assistance directly into workplace workflows, illustrating how manufacturers are positioning hardware as part of broader AI systems.

Across the exhibition floor, devices are increasingly functioning as entry points to distributed intelligence.

Behind the screens, companies are investing in computing infrastructure.

Huawei showcased AI computing solutions based on its Atlas platform, highlighting the importance of scalable training and inference capabilities for industrial AI deployment. The emphasis was on compute architecture designed to support large models and real-time analytics.

Enterprise hardware makers also highlighted AI-ready terminals for logistics, manufacturing and energy sectors, where reliability and system integration are essential.

MWC 2026 reflects a broader recalibration of industry priorities. Attention is shifting toward distributed computing, automated workflows and network architectures designed to support intelligent coordination.

Over the past two decades, mobile technology expanded connectivity from isolated devices to interconnected systems. The current transition extends that trajectory by embedding intelligence throughout those connections.

If the previous phase was defined by “everything connected,” the emerging phase is increasingly defined by “everything intelligent.”

  • NOC to Host IOC-backed advanced gender-inclusive governance course in Abuja

    By Tony Nnezianya

Abuja: — In a strategic move aligned with national sports reform and global governance standards, the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) is set to host an advanced gender-inclusive governance course, supported by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The three-day intensive programme will take place from March 23 to March 25, 2026, at the Media Centre, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Supported by Olympic Solidarity, this initiative is specifically designed for former female athletes and women currently serving on the Boards of National Sports Federations.

The programme underscores the NOC’s commitment to strengthening governance structures, promoting inclusive leadership, and enhancing institutional effectiveness across Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.

The course will be officially declared open by the President of the NOC, Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, who maintains that sustainable sports development would rely heavily on transparent, accountable, and inclusive frameworks.

According to him, institutional reform requires competent and inclusive leadership. By investing in the capacity of women leaders, we are strengthening governance, improving compliance with international standards, and reinforcing the foundation for sustainable sports development in Nigeria

To be delivered under the IOC’s global educational framework, the curriculum is based on the IOC Sports Administration Course manual.

The participants will receive internationally recognised training in governance reform and strategic planning; financial oversight and organisational accountability; ethical leadership and safeguarding principles; and policy implementation and institutional management.

Engr. Gumel also notes that beyond technical instruction, the program serves as a vital platform for mentorship and peer collaboration. It aims to cultivate a network of women leaders equipped to influence institutional reforms and drive long-term strategic growth within their respective federations.

The NOC reaffirmed its dedication to aligning national sports governance with evolving international benchmarks. By fostering collaboration with government agencies and stakeholders, the Committee seeks to ensure measurable progress in board diversity and leadership effectiveness.

This initiative is expected to yield tangible impacts, including strengthened institutional oversight and enhanced participation of women in high-level decision-making roles across Nigerian sports. –

  • El-Rufai’s N1bn rights suit against ICPC, others suffers setback

El-Rufai’s N1bn rights suit against ICPC, others suffers setback

Former Gov. Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State’s rights enforcement suit against Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and four others suffered a setback on Tuesday due to the inability of his lawyer to serve the respondents.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that El-Rufai is demanding a N1 billion in damages against ICPC (1st respondent) and others.

They include the Chief Magistrate at the Magistrate’s Court of the FCT, Abuja; Inspector-General (I-G) of Police and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), named as 2nd to 4th respondents respectively.

The matter, which was before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja, could not proceed shortly after it was called.

Upon resumed hearing, only Ubong Akpan, the counsel, who appeared for the ex-govenor, was in court, as there was no representation for the resoondents.

Akpan, therefire, informed the court that though the matter was scheduled for mention, they had been unable to serve the redpondents.

He sought an adjournment to enable them do the needful and Justice Abdulmalik fixed March 11 for further mention.

NAN reports that El-Rufai, through his team of lawyers led by Oluwole Iyamu, SAN, is praying the court to declare that the search warrant issued on Feb. 4 by the Chief Magistrate, Magistrate’s Court of the FCT (2nd respondent), authorising the search and seizure at his residence was invalid, null and void.

He is asking the court to declare that the search warrant is “null and void for lack of particularity, material drafting errors, ambiguity in execution parameters, overbreadth, and absence of probable cause thereby constituting an unlawful and unreasonable search in violation of Section 37 of the Constitution.”

The former governor, in the originating motion on notice marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/345/2026, dated and filed Feb. 20 by Iyamu, sought seven reliefs.

He prayed the court to declare that the invasion and search of his residence at House 12, Mambilla Street, Aso Drive, Abuja, on Feb. 19 at about 2pm and executed by agents of ICPC and I-G, “under the aforesaid invalid warrant, amounts to a gross violation of the applicant’s fundamental rights to dignity of the human person, personal liberty, fair hearing, and privacy under Sections 34, 35, 36, and 37 of the Constitution.”

He urged the court to declare that “any evidence obtained pursuant to the aforesaid invalid warrant and unlawful search is inadmissible in any proceedings against the applicant, as it was procured in breach of constitutional safeguards.”

El-Rufai, therefore, sought an order of injunction restraining the respondents and their agents from further relying on, using, or tendering any evidence or items seized during the unlawful search in any investigation, prosecution, or proceedings involving him.

“An order directing the Ist and 3rd respondents (ICPC and I-G) to forthwith retum all items seized from the applicant’s premises during the unlawful search, together with a detailed inventory thereof.

“An order awarding the sum of N1,000,000,000.00 (One Billion Naira) as general, exemplary, and aggravated damages against the respondents jointly and severally for the violations of the applicant’s fundamental rights, including trespass, unlawful seizure, and the resultant psychological trauma, humiliation, distress, infringement of privacy, and reputational harm.”

    El-Rufai did the breakdown of the N1 billion in damages to include “a N300 million as compensatory damages for psychological trauma, emotional distress, and loss of personal security;

“A N400 million as exemplary damages to deter future misconduct by law enforcement agencies and vindicate the applicant’s rights.

“A N300 million as aggravated damages for the malicious, high-handed and oppressive nature of the respondents’ actions, including the use of a patently defective warrant procured through misleading representations.”

He equally sought a N100 million as cost of filing the suit, including legal fees and associated expenses.

In his grounds of argument, the senior lawyer argued that the search warrant was fundamentally defective, lacking specificity in the description of items to be seized, containing material typographical errors, ambiguous execution terms, overbroad directives, and no verifiable probable cause.

He said this was in contravention of Sections 143-148 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015; Section 36 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC) Act, 2000, and constitutional protections against arbitrary intrusions.

    Specifically, Iyamu argued that Section 143 of the ACJA requires that an application for a search warrant be supported by information in writing and on oath, setting forth reasonable grounds for suspicion, which was absent here as evidenced by the incomplete initiating clause;

He said Section 144 mandates particular descriptions of the place to be searched and the items sought, to prevent general warrants.

He, however, argued that the instant warrant vaguely referred to “the thing aforesaid” without any detail.

Iyamu stated that the execution of the invalid warrant on Feb. 19 resulted in an unlawful invasion of his client’s premises, constituting violations of the rights to dignity (Section 34), personal liberty (Section 35), fair hearing (Section 36), and privacy (Section 37) of the Constitution.

He further argued that the search was conducted without legal justification and in a manner that inflicted humiliation and distress.

UN Building bombing: Court grants DSS’ request for speedy trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday, granted an application by the Department of State Services (DSS) seeking acelerated hearing in the ongoing prosecution of five men accused of being behind the Aug. 26, 2011, bombing of the United Nations’ Building in Abuja.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order while ruling on an application moved by prosecuting lawyer, Alex Izinyon, SAN, who noted that the case had dragged for nearly 15 years.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).reports that Al- Barnawi, also known variously as Kafuri/ Naziru/Alhaji Yahaya/Mallam Dauda/Alhaji Tanimu, is being prosecuted by the DSS along with Mohammed Bashir Saleh; Umar Mohammed Bello (aka Datti; Mohammed Salisu) and Yakubu Nuhu (aka Bello Maishayi).

Izinyon had stated that the case had been in court for about nine years and prayed the court for expeditious hearing in line with the court’s practice direction on the prosecution of terrorism and related cases

He said it is in the interest of all parties that the case be promptly determined by allowing the conduct of proceedings on a daily basis, where possible.

Lawyers to the defendants did not object to Izinyon’s application, following which Justice Nwite granted it.

During proceedings, ane prosecution witness, a senior operative of DSS, told the court that the Service was always professional in its investigations.

He stated this while testifying in the trial-within-trial.

The trial-within-trial was being conducted to ascertain whether or not the defendants offered their statements voluntarily.

The witness, identified as PW3, who spoke while being cross-examined by lawyer to second defendant, Bala Dakum, said he couldn’t recollect the specifics of all that are contained in a video recording of one of the interview session with the 2nd defendant, which was admitted in evidence as “Exhibit C.”

The witness, who said he is a computer forensic expert and works in DSS’ Technical Department, told the court that he recorded the interview sessions with the five defendants, but could no longer recall the exact month and year that “Exhibit C” was recorded.

He, however stressed that potable evidential forensic recorders being used by the DSS complies with the Evidence Act and global standards.

He said: “I am unable to recollect the exact date. However, the interactions, the interviews of the five defendants occured between 2016 and 2017.”

The witness faulted Dakum’s claim that there are several skipping in the recording of the statements of the 2nd defendant, Exhibit C, in particular.

On the lawyer’s claim that the cautionary words were not administered on the 2nd defendant before he made his statements, the witness said his role, as the technical officer, was limited to recording everything that transpired between the defendant and the interviewers.

“My duty did not include asking questions or interfering in the process whatsoever. Accordingly, the chief interviewer should be able to address that question,” he said.

The witness added that from the video evidence, he observed that the 2nd defendant was administered the cautionary words and given all the options to volunteer or decline as well as access to legal counsel, but he voluntarily elected to continue with the interview.

On the lawyer’s suggestion that not all the transpired in the interview room was captured in the video, the witness said: “Every official interaction between the interviewers and defendants was duly recorded.”

On why it was only the face of the 2nd defendant that was shown in the video, the witness said it was the standard practice not to capture the faces of the interviewers for their personal safety purpose.

The witness added: “The standard operating procedure of the SSS (DSS) provides for protection in the interest of the personal security for the interviewers,

“However, in doing that, interviews often require exchanges, giving papers or pens for the purpose of recording of statements, body part of interviewers may inadvertently become visible.

“In the interest of integrity, even such exposure cannot be withheld or tampered with or edited as the recording device is designed to be tamper proof.”

On whether a video in which an interviewer’s face is inadvertently captured is either edited or discarded, the witness said every session of official interactions between the defendants and the interviewers are always submitted to the court.

He added: “However, where there are concerns bordering on security as a result of inadvertent exposure, such concerns are left for the determination of the court.”

Earlier while being cross-examined by lawyer to the first defendant, F. K. Kamaga, the witness gave details of how he audio-visually recorded the interview, statements taken, and translation sessions with the five defendants.

He faulted claim by Kamaga that the recording device could be edited or paused in the course of recording a session.

“This is so that the recorder has been used even outside this country. The forensic recorder is designed to be tamper proof, that in the event of a pause, it automatically triggers a closure and signs digitally so that nothing can be added to it again.

“In a nutshell, the device records on two digitally exact DVD in real time, as it is happening and it not is designed to be paused or stopped midway into interview.
Those are part of the security features of the equipment.”

The judge adjourned the matter until March 4 for hearing.
