    Xinhua/Flowerbudnews

For today’s China, AI is no longer merely a tool for improving efficiency, but has become a driver ushering in a new stage of economic development.

This year’s government work report for the first time calls for creating new forms of “smart economy,” which can be seen as the next stage in the evolution of the digital economy. Experts say the country’s advantage lies in combining vast manufacturing capacity with expanding AI capabilities, turning technological advances into large-scale industrial value.

The report also calls for improving AI governance, while the draft outline of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan highlights efforts to strengthen international dialogue and cooperation on AI.

BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) — As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly moves from laboratories to solve problems in factories, hospitals and supply chains, Chinese policymakers have set their sights high, anticipating the rise of a “smart economy.”

At this year’s “two sessions” of China’s top legislature and top political advisory body, the government work report, submitted to the national legislature for deliberation last week, for the first time called for creating new forms of “smart economy.”

Analysts observe that China is conveying a broader message: AI is no longer merely a tool for improving efficiency, but has become a driver ushering in a new stage of economic development.

FROM “AI PLUS” TO “SMART ECONOMY”

This wording in the key document marks a progression in policy thinking. In 2024, the government work report first introduced the “AI Plus” initiative, while the 2025 report advocated for its continued advancement. This year, it has moved further, framing AI as an engine of a broader economic transformation.

Zhou Li’an, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and a professor at Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management, said the phrase “smart economy” reflects a profound shift in how AI is positioned in policy thinking.

“The idea of a smart economy suggests that AI itself is increasingly becoming a foundational element of the economic system, shaping how resources are allocated, industries organized, and services delivered,” he noted.

In practical terms, this year’s report outlines how this transition might unfold. It calls for faster application of new-generation intelligent terminals and AI agents, large-scale commercial application of AI in key sectors and fields, and the cultivation of new forms and models of AI-native business.

It also emphasizes strengthening open-source AI ecosystems, expanding public cloud services, improving national coordination of computing power, and building hyper-scale intelligent computing clusters. New infrastructure like satellite internet and upgraded 5G Plus Industrial Internet Initiative is also highlighted.

Taken together, these measures suggest that China’s AI strategy is entering a more comprehensive phase. Rather than focusing mainly on technological breakthroughs, policymakers are now underscoring the integration of AI with the real economy — from manufacturing and agriculture to public services and consumer markets.

This broader orientation is reinforced in the draft outline of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), which calls for advances in areas such as multimodal systems, AI agents, embodied AI and swarm intelligence.

Behind these policies lies a clear economic logic. The “smart economy” can be seen as the next stage in the evolution of the digital economy. While digitalization centers on building networks, platforms and data flows, AI introduces systems capable of perception, decision-making and autonomous action.

To put it simply, if digital infrastructure is the “nervous system” of the modern economy, AI is its “brain.”

    TURNING AI INTO INDUSTRIAL VALUE

This distinction also explains the emphasis on scale. Both the government work report and the draft outline of the five-year plan stress commercialization and large-scale deployment, signaling that AI is expected to move faster into the mainstream of economic activity.

China’s abundant data resources, comprehensive industrial system and vast application scenarios provide favorable conditions for the development of a “smart economy.”

Another defining feature of China’s strategy is the emphasis on intelligent terminals and AI agents. In recent years, much of the global AI discussion has focused on large models. China’s policy framework, however, places equal weight on the devices and systems through which AI is deployed in real-world applications.

For businesses, the true opportunity lies in vertical applications, especially in manufacturing.

Qian Gang, board chairman of CITIC Pacific Special Steel Group and a national political advisor, said the company has developed more than 100 AI vertical models to support intelligent manufacturing, helping turn one of its plants into the first “lighthouse factory” in the global special-steel industry. A “lighthouse factory” is a world-leading, future-oriented manufacturing site that exemplifies the use of cutting-edge technology for transformative business and societal benefits.

Similar experiments are unfolding across industries in China, the world’s second-largest economy. Experts say the country’s advantage lies in combining vast manufacturing capacity with expanding AI capabilities, turning technological advances into large-scale industrial value.

“AI is now transitioning from a decision-supporting ‘copilot’ to an autonomous, outcome-delivering ‘agent,’ as the industry moves from a period of explosive technological growth into one of value realization,” said Jia Shaoqian, chairman of Hisense Group and a deputy to the 14th National People’s Congress.

    INFRASTRUCTURE FOR AI EXPANSION

Infrastructure will play a decisive role in determining how quickly these applications spread. Training and operating advanced AI systems requires enormous computing resources and reliable energy supply. For that reason, the government work report emphasizes building hyper-scale intelligent computing clusters and improving coordination between computing power and electricity systems.

This approach reflects China’s efforts to better coordinate its digital and energy resources. While computing demand is growing rapidly in major economic centers, many inland regions possess abundant renewable energy. Aligning computing infrastructure with these energy resources can help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and support the sustainable expansion of the AI industry.

The report also highlights the development of satellite internet and the upgrading of industrial digital networks.

Ma Kui, a national lawmaker and general manager of China Mobile’s Sichuan provincial branch, said the country’s vast southwest could play an increasingly important role in its computing infrastructure expansion.

With abundant energy resources and growing demand, he noted, regions such as Sichuan and the neighboring Chongqing Municipality are well positioned to develop intelligent computing industries under China’s “East Data, West Computing” strategy.

“But to unlock the region’s full potential, it is imperative to expand large-scale applications and strengthen links with the real economy,” Ma said.

    GOVERNANCE AND GLOBAL COOPERATION

As China advances the development of a “smart economy,” policymakers are also placing greater emphasis on strengthening AI governance, a focus which is mentioned in both the government work report and the draft outline of the five-year plan.

With AI systems increasingly capable of handling complex tasks and supporting automated decision-making, the need to strengthen governance frameworks in areas such as data security, privacy protection and algorithm oversight is becoming more evident.

The report calls for improving AI governance, while the five-year plan highlights efforts to strengthen international dialogue and cooperation on AI, as well as accelerate the building of an open-source technology ecosystem and community with global reach. It also underscores expanding international cooperation in the digital and intelligent sectors, including deeper collaboration in e-commerce, mobile payments and smart-city development.

China’s core AI industry was valued at more than 1.2 trillion yuan (about 174 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025, and featured over 6,200 AI companies, Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng said on the sidelines of the national legislative session. He stressed that AI should ultimately “serve people, benefit people and remain under human control,” and function as a shared global public good.

National legislator and tech expert Zhou Di said challenges such as AI technological barriers, cross-border data flows and ethical governance require greater international cooperation, so that the benefits of technological progress can reach more countries and help address challenges facing humanity as a whole.

UNICAL VC Seeks Strategic Partnership with MTN Nigeria on Digitalisation, Sports Development

    By Bassey Asuquo

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, has called for a strategic partnership between the University and MTN Nigeria to strengthen digital infrastructure and promote sports development in the institution.

Prof. Offiong made the call when a delegation from MTN Nigeria paid a courtesy visit to his office, held at the Vice Chancellor Conference room.

Welcoming the team, the Vice-Chancellor commended MTN Nigeria for recognising the role the University played in shaping its alumni and for returning to honour the institution.

He described the representatives of the telecommunications company as great ambassadors of the University, noting that the University of Calabar has produced outstanding men and women who are excelling in different fields of endeavour across the country.

According to him, the University has come of age, particularly following the celebration of its 50th anniversary, and is currently pursuing major reforms aimed at improving administrative efficiency and academic excellence.

Prof. Offiong disclosed that the University has begun the digitalisation of key administrative processes, including the promotion of both academic and non-teaching staff, adding that the institution is working towards a fully digital record system that will simplify documentation processes, including transcript generation.

However, he identified poor network connectivity on campus as a major challenge affecting the smooth implementation of these initiatives while urging MTN Nigeria to support the University in improving network infrastructure within the campus to enhance digital operations.

He also revealed that the University is among the beneficiaries of a World Bank ICT intervention programme, which is expected to significantly upgrade ICT facilities and further strengthen digital processing within the institution.

Prof. Offiong, who noted that collaboration between the University and MTN Nigeria would be beneficial in advancing the institution’s digital transformation agenda, stated that the University of Calabar remains one of the leading institutions in sports among Nigerian universities and will host the NUGA Games later in the year.

He explained that the University intends to use the opportunity of hosting the games to upgrade its sporting facilities and called on MTN Nigeria to partner with the institution to ensure a successful tournament.

He recalled that the University previously hosted the NUGA Games in 1990 but noted that there was little to show in terms of lasting sporting and recreational infrastructure after the event.

This is even as he expressed optimism that a renewed partnership with MTN Nigeria would help the University build sustainable facilities while maintaining its tradition of academic excellence.

“We want to see MTN Nigeria as a reliable partner in achieving these goals,” the Vice-Chancellor said, stressing that while the University remains committed to sports development, it will not compromise its core mandate of maintaining high academic standards.

Earlier, the Chief Marketing Officer of MTN Nigeria, Mrs. Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, said the team was at the University to pay homage to an institution that played a significant role in shaping the lives and careers of many members of the company’s workforce.

She said they are in Cross River State for the MTN Nigeria’s Youth Athletics Championship being hosted by Calabar noting that Cross River State remains a very strategic state to MTN Nigeria, describing it as a long-standing partner in progress with the telecommunications company over the years.

She recalled that MTN Nigeria first brought the championship to Cross River State in 2024, noting that the event recorded impressive participation and helped identify promising young athletes.

The Chief Marketing Officer further revealed that one of the beneficiaries of the programme, Destiny Reuben, is a student of the University of Calabar and has since been admitted into the MTN Athletics Training Programme, where she is currently undergoing professional training aimed at developing her into a world-class athlete capable of competing both locally and internationally.

Mrs. Ikenna-Emeka stated that MTN Nigeria was excited to return to Cross River State for the fourth season of the MTN Champs Athletics Championship.

She also commended the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong for his progressive leadership, particularly in the areas of policy direction, infrastructural development, and gender inclusiveness in appointments within the University’s management team.

Also present at the meeting were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Ekaette Enang; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Afam Okiwelu; the Registrar, Dr. Mrs. Chukwuka Icha; the Bursar, Mr. Joseph Odum; MTN Regional Sales Manager, Chibuzo Akuchie, and other members of the University management and MTN Nigeria delegation.

  • Coup plot: Tijjaniyya group withdraws support for Tinubu

The Tijjaniyya followers under the umbrella of Tijjaniyya Youth of Nigeria says it is withdrawing its support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections following what it describes as the unfair detention of Sheikh Sani Khalifa Zaria, who has been in custody over an alleged coup plot.

The group called on local and international human rights organizations to intervene in the matter and pressure the Army and the DSS to produce the scholar in court latest by Friday, March 13, 2026, in the interest of justice and fairness.

Addressing the media in Minna, the leader of the Tijjaniyya Youths of Nigeria, Faruk Yusuf Balarabe, announced that the Tijjaniyya scholars, community leaders and members of Tijjaniyya brotherhood across Nigeria have taken the decision.

He said they have  decided not to embark on protests in order to avoid being hijacked by hoodlums to cause mayhem, but will instead vote massively against President Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections.

“If Sheikh Sani Khalifa is not brought to court by 13th March, 2026, the Tijjaniyya Youths of Nigeria will withdraw their political support from the current administration. We will not support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027 presidential election. We will not support the All Progressive Congress (APC) in future elections.

“Our future political support will go to any credible candidate from any part of Nigeria who demonstrates fairness, Justice, respect for scholars, and commitment to the welfare of Nigerian people. Despite our disappointment, we emphasize that our movement remains peaceful, lawful and democratic”, he said.

He called on all Tijjaniyya followers and concerned Nigerians to remain calm, disciplined, and law-abiding, and to wait until 2027 to exercise their rights.

He lamented that the cleric has spent over 70 days in detention, and the public has not been given clear information regarding his status or the justification for his continued detention.

“This situation has raised serious questions within the Tijjaniyya community and among many Nigerians who have regards for the rule of law”, he added.

Balarabe said Sheikh Sani Khalifa Zaria was a lover of peace who preached against the hunger protests in order to avoid destabilizing the country.

“During the 2023 Presidential election campaign, many political leaders sought prayers, legitimacy and support from respected Islamic scholars and spiritual leaders across the country. Today, the situation has become deeply painful for many members of Tijjaniyya community. The same scholars who promoted peace, stability and democratic participation now find themselves facing circumstances that many followers consider confusing and distressing”, he said.

He said Tijjaniyya followers participated massively in mobilising support for the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He revealed that Tijjaniyya followers across the country will engage in spiritual activities during the last ten days of Ramadan in mosques and other Islamic gatherings to invoke Allah’s intervention.

Ede (Osun) FLOWERBUDNEWS:     Residents of Ede, who had been eagerly waiting for the first rain of the year to cool off the excruciating heat,  were shocked when it finally came last Sunday, turning out to be a disaster for the community.

The rain, which was accompanied by hailstone, wreaked havoc on roofs of some buildings and destroyed many properties in some homes, forcing many people to take refuge with neighbours or in temporary shelters.

The rain, which started around 6.30: pm with strong winds lasted about 20 minutes but left behind trails of sorrow and anguish as trees and electric poles were uprooted.

Experts attribute the intensity of these early rainfalls which are becoming increasingly destructive to climate change. These often violent initial rains are typical of the pre-monsoon season in West Africa.

Some of the residents who spoke with Flowerburdnews correspondent attested that the first rains of the year often accompanied by strong winds, causing widespread disruption to residential, educational and medical facilities with some incidents causing injuries and displacement.

Till date, many victims are yet to effect repairs on their properties because of lack of funds, while debris of the fallout of the disaster litters around the community.

A female hairdresser, who was attending to a customer, with her children in a container shop close to her house located off Ede Federal polytechnic, said she escaped death by whiskers when the storms pulled off her container and threw it over a nearby fence.

The woman who lost her hairdryer and other accessories, was however, thankful to God that no life was lost. She urged relevant agencies and the state government to assist to mitigate the effects of the storm on the victims.

Similarly, another victim, who identified himself as Hassan Nafiu, said that the roof of hiss house was completely destroyed in the disaster.

He said :”I was at home when it happened. It started with drops of ice blocks and eventually, roofs started flying here and there. About 20 buildings and several electric poles were affected by the storms in my area.

Also, another resident, Jamiu Ademola who owns properties in the area, said it was unfortunate that rainstorm of less than 30 minutes could cause such havoc, destroying electric poles, houses and shops.

He described the incident as natural disaster which could not be blamed on anybody and called for the assistance to mitigate the colossal loss.

According to him, it has been a busy time for artisans, carpenters and bricklayers who have been working from one place to the others and consequently, the cost of building materials have gone up within the last few hours.

Meanwhile, a community leader, Alhaji Abdul Ganiy Amoo Tiamiyu has called on the residents to take pro active measure to prevent natural disaster effects on lives and properties.

Alhaji Tiamiyu who resides in Iso-Isu area of Ede North, said; ”I couldn’t explain the kind of wind that blew last Sunday but called on humanitarian agencies to come to the aid of those who can’t afford the cost of repairs.

He used the occasion to call on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assist the victims of the recent rainstorm in some parts of the Ede area of the state.

He said the interventions is needed to ameliorate the sufferings of the affected people, especially the less privileged in the society so as not to jeopardize their well-being.

  • Rivers State and Legislative Screening of Commissioner Nominees: Reflections on Constitutional Oversight, Institutional Restraint, and Responsible Governance.*

Rivers State and Legislative Screening of Commissioner Nominees: Reflections on Constitutional Oversight, Institutional Restraint, and Responsible Governance.*

    By Sylvester Udemezue

    (1). *INTRODUCTION*
Recent reports indicating that the Rivers State House of Assembly rejected four out of nine commissioner nominees forwarded by His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, have once again generated intense public commentary and political debate. While such developments naturally attract attention in a politically vibrant society, it is important that public discourse around them remains measured, responsible, and guided by a proper understanding of constitutional governance.

At moments such as this, what Rivers State, and indeed Nigeria, needs most is calm reflection, institutional respect, and constructive engagement, rather than the further stoking of political tensions.

(2). *THE CONSTITUTIONAL ROLE OF THE LEGISLATURE*

Under Nigeria’s constitutional system, the confirmation of commissioner nominees by a State House of Assembly is not a mere ceremonial exercise. It is a constitutionally recognised mechanism designed to ensure accountability, transparency, and suitability in the composition of the executive council. Accordingly, when a House of Assembly decides, after conducting its screening process, to withhold confirmation of certain nominees, it should not automatically be interpreted as an act of hostility toward the executive arm of government. Rather, it represents the legislature exercising its oversight responsibilities within the framework of the doctrine of separation of powers, which is a foundational principle of democratic governance. In practical terms, this means that a House of Assembly is not under any legal or constitutional obligation to confirm every nominee presented by the Governor. The Assembly is expected to independently scrutinise nominees and determine whether they meet the expectations of competence, integrity, and public confidence required for service in the State Executive Council. Such situations are not unusual within democratic systems. They are part of the constitutional checks and balances designed to promote responsible governance.

(3). *A RELEVANT NIGERIAN PRECEDENT: THE LAGOS EXAMPLE*

The current development in Rivers State should be understood within the broader context of Nigeria’s democratic experience. On 23 August 2023, the Lagos State House of Assembly declined to confirm 17 of the 39 nominees forwarded by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for appointment as commissioners and special advisers, while approving the remaining nominees. Following public speculation about the decision, the Lagos Assembly clarified that its refusal to confirm some nominees should not be interpreted as a conflict with the Governor, explaining that the legislature was simply performing its constitutional duty in the screening process. The Lagos experience demonstrates that legislative refusal to confirm certain nominees can occur even within a functioning working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government. It therefore illustrates that such outcomes are part of the normal operation of constitutional oversight.

Another recent example from Nigeria also reflects the same principle of legislative scrutiny. In February 2025, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly suspended the screening of a commissioner-nominee, Yakubu Kwanta, following issues raised during the screening process relating to his appearance before a legislative committee concerning ministry budget matters. That episode again demonstrates that legislative screening of nominees is not intended to be automatic. The House of Assembly retains the authority to pause, question, or decline confirmation where concerns arise in the course of the screening process.

These examples underscore a fundamental constitutional point: legislative scrutiny of executive nominations is a routine feature of democratic governance.

(4). *COMPARATIVE INSIGHT FROM THE UNITED STATES SENATE CONFIRMATION SYSTEM.*

The principle that legislative bodies may scrutinise or reject executive nominations is not unique to Nigeria. It is also firmly embedded in the constitutional practice of other established democracies. In the United States, for instance, many major executive and judicial appointments made by the President require the “advice and consent” of the United States Senate before the nominees can assume office. History shows that the US Senate has, on several occasions, exercised this constitutional authority by rejecting nominees after rigorous scrutiny. A well-known example is the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the United States Supreme Court in 1987, which was rejected by the Senate following extensive hearings and debate. Similarly, the Senate has rejected cabinet nominees in American history, including Charles B. Warren, whose nomination for Attorney-General was rejected by the Senate in 1925. These examples demonstrate a widely recognised democratic principle: the power to nominate does not automatically translate into a right to confirmation. The confirming body retains the constitutional authority to evaluate nominees independently.

(5). *THE WAY FORWARD: OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO GOVERNOR SIM FUBARA*

Where a nominee is rejected by the legislature, constitutional practice presents several constructive options for the executive arm of government. First, the Governor may choose to nominate alternative candidates to fill the positions in question. Rivers State is blessed with a large pool of capable and qualified individuals who can serve effectively in the State Executive Council. Second, the Governor may decide to engage constructively with the leadership of the House of Assembly to better understand the concerns raised during the screening process. Where those concerns are clarifiable or remediable, diplomatic engagement may pave the way for reconsideration of the affected nominees. Leadership, particularly within complex political environments, often requires patience, humility, and strategic engagement.

(6). *WHY CONFRONTATION MUST BE AVOIDED*

One option that should be carefully avoided is confrontation or escalation of political tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government. The rejection of nominees, whatever the reasons may be, should not be interpreted as a declaration of institutional conflict. It is simply part of the constitutional checks and balances that sustain democratic governance. When disagreements between institutions are managed through dialogue and mutual respect, governance becomes more stable and productive. Conversely, when such disagreements escalate into prolonged public confrontations, governance suffers and the public interest is undermined.

(7). *THE NEED FOR POLITICAL MATURITY AND STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP IN RIVERS STATE*

Rivers State has in recent times experienced significant political tension, much of which has played out in the public domain. While disagreements are inevitable in politics, prolonged crises can distract from the urgent task of governance and development. For this reason, it is important that all actors involved demonstrate a high level of political maturity and strategic leadership. Governor Siminalayi Fubara, like every leader entrusted with public responsibility, may wish to approach the present situation with the calmness, prudence, and diplomatic skill that the responsibilities of his office demand. Leadership is not measured only by the assertion of authority, but also by the ability to manage relationships, navigate complex political environments, and build consensus even in difficult circumstances.

    (8). *MANAGING POLITICAL RELATIONSHIPS*

Political leadership often involves managing relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including legislators, political allies, and even political mentors. Experience in governance repeatedly shows that many political disagreements can be resolved through dialogue, consultation, and constructive engagement, rather than confrontation. The capacity to accommodate differing interests while preserving institutional stability remains one of the defining attributes of effective leadership.
In the Interest of Rivers State. Ultimately, the most important consideration should not be political rivalry or institutional competition, but the welfare and progress of the people of Rivers State. Citizens expect their leaders to focus on governance, development, and service delivery. They deserve a political environment characterised by cooperation, stability, and responsible leadership. It is therefore my humble appeal that all parties involved (the Governor, the House of Assembly, and other influential stakeholders) should place the long-term interests of Rivers State above temporary political disagreements. Rivers State is too important, and its people too deserving, for governance to be overshadowed by recurring political crises. The moment calls for restraint, wisdom, and statesmanship. With humility and respect, I urge all concerned to embrace dialogue over confrontation, cooperation over conflict, and governance over political drama. The people of Rivers State deserve peace, stability, and purposeful leadership. Let the focus now return to what truly matters: governing effectively and serving the people.
    Respectfully,

68% of ‘connected’ American Jews support the US-Israel war against Iran, survey finds

The results suggest U.S. Jews are more supportive than Americans overall but less than Israeli Jews.

About two-thirds of “connected” American Jews support the U.S.-Israel war against Iran, a new survey has found, even as they are concerned that it could exacerbate antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment in the United States.

The results of the survey, taken last week by Israel’s Jewish People Policy Institute, suggest that American Jews are more supportive of the war than Americans overall. Multiple surveys last week found that about 60% of American voters opposed the military action, with support significantly lower among Democrats, historically the party of most Jewish voters.

A partisan shift was apparent in the JPPI survey, with near-total support for the war from those who describe themselves as politically conservative. Still, 57% of “leaning liberal” Jews said they support the war. Self-identified “strong liberals” were the only group of U.S. Jews to say they oppose the war, with only 28% backing it.

The survey of 692 American Jews drew from a panel maintained by JPPI that aims to reflect the denominational distribution of U.S. Jews. The institute says its polls reflect the sentiments of “connected” Jews because its panel includes fewer intermarried Jews, more Jews who are affiliated with denominations and more Jews who have lived in Israel than demographic data would suggest is representative of U.S Jewry overal

The JPPI survey finds that American Jews are more like Israeli Jews than like U.S. voters overall. An Israel Democracy Institute poll taken last week found that 93% of Jewish Israelis supported the military operations against Iran.

Iran has long waged a campaign against both Israel and the United States, but while it has struck at U.S. targets around the world, Israel is geographically in its crosshairs. Its missiles killed dozens of Israelis during a 12-day war last year and have killed more than a dozen already during the current war, which has expanded to much of the Middle East.

President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have indicated that in addition to ending Iran’s nuclear ambitions and demolishing its military infrastructure, they want the nearly 50-year-old Islamic Republic regime to fall. The JPPI poll found that only a quarter of U.S. Jews say regime change should be a primary goal of the war, compared with 58% who say the war should seek to “eliminate nuclear program, ballistic missile capabilities, and support of terror.”

American Jews polled by JPPI also said they expected the war to increase both antisemitism (52%) and anti-Israel sentiment (45%) in the United States. Already, the war has sparked debate over whether Trump was forced into the conflict by Netanyahu — a narrative they both have rejected. The survey found that 72% of American Jews believe Trump needed no convincing, while only 14% believe Netanyahu was the primary driver of military action against Iran.

BREAKING: Gov. Lawal of Zamfara formally defects to APC

    By Shuaib Sadiq

Gusau:  Gov. Dauda Lawal of Zamfara has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending speculations over the past weeks.

Lawal’s defection was announced by Alhaji Nuhu Salihu-Anka, Director-General, Media and Communication, Office of the Governor, in Gusau on Monday.

“The Government and APC family of Zamfara State wish to formally inform the general public of an important political development following extensive consultations with stakeholders, political leaders, elders, and supporters across the state.

“After careful consideration, and in the overriding interest of stability, progress, and the sustainable development of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor of Zamfara, has decided to formally defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC),” Salihu-Anka said.

He said Lawal’s decision was reached after wide consultations with political stakeholders and supporters, particularly in view of the prolonged internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and unresolved structural challenges within the PDP at both the national and state levels.

“These challenges have continued to create uncertainty and distractions that could hinder effective governance and the delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Zamfara.

“The governor emphasised that his primary responsibility remains the peace, security, and development of Zamfara.

“Consequently, it became necessary to align with a political platform that provides greater unity, stability, and stronger cooperation with the Federal Government for the benefit of the people.

“The final deliberation leading to this historic decision was held at the Government House in Gusau under the coordination and leadership of the Deputy Governor, alongside senior government officials and key political stakeholders,” Salihu-Anka said.

He added that Lawal expressed deep appreciation to members and supporters of the PDP for their cooperation and support over the years.

“However, he noted that the present political realities and the unresolved crisis within the party have made it necessary to take this bold step in the interest of good governance and the future of Zamfara.

“By joining the APC, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening unity, improving security, accelerating development, and ensuring that Zamfara benefits fully from stronger collaboration with the federal government.

“The government, therefore, calls on all citizens, political leaders, party supporters, and stakeholders to remain calm, peaceful, and supportive as the state enters this new political phase aimed at promoting unity, stability, and development,” Salihu-Anka said. (NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
