Oba Ladoja Sustains 20-Year Charity, Distributes Food, Cash to over 5,000 Ibadan Residents

    ‎By Adewale Owoade

‎Over 5,000 residents of Ibadanland have benefitted from a Ramadan and Lent food package distributed by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

‎Each beneficiary received cash, school bags for children and food items such as rice, beans, semovita, garri, maize and noodles during the distribution held at the monarch’s private residence in Bodija, Ibadan.

‎Speaking while presenting the annual Ramadan/Lent packages, Oba Ladoja said the gesture was part of his commitment to giving back to society and supporting the less privileged.

‎The monarch, who was represented by his wife, Rashidat Olayinka Ladoja, noted that the initiative had been sustained for about 20 years.

‎She said, “Baba Ladoja has been doing this for the past 20 years, but this is the first time we are organising it since he ascended the throne as the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

‎“So, it is not different from what we have been doing before. The only difference is that the number of beneficiaries is larger this year.

‎“Last year, we distributed to about 5,000 people. This year, the beneficiaries are more than 5,000. We thank God the arrangement has been hitch-free and orderly.”

‎She added that Oba Ladoja had always prioritised the welfare of the people throughout his years of public service as a senator, former governor and now as the Olubadan of Ibadanland.

‎Ramadan, observed by Muslims worldwide, is marked by fasting, prayer and acts of charity, while Lent is a period of reflection, sacrifice and generosity among Christians.

‎Community leaders and beneficiaries at the event commended the monarch for sustaining the programme over the years.

‎Some beneficiaries said the food items and financial support would help ease the burden on their households at a time when many families are grappling with rising food prices.

‎The distribution exercise forms part of Oba Ladoja’s broader humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting the less privileged and strengthening social bonds among residents of Ibadanland, regardless of religious affiliation.

  • Court adjourns trial of man who allegedly defamed EFCC chairman until March 25

Court adjourns trial of man who allegedly defamed EFCC chairman until March 25

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, adjourned the trial of a man, Moses Oddiri, who allegedly accussed the EFCC’s Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede, of fraud to the tune of N4 billion, until March 25 for hearing.

Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the case following an application by Oddiri’s new lawyer, Godwin Ogboji, SAN, seeking an adjournment to enable him study the case file.

Ogboji had told the court upon resumed trial that he had just been brief to take up the case and was yet to meet with his client (defendant) and to study the case file.

The lawyer prayed the court for permission to see the defendant in the DSS custody.

Justice Abdulmalik, however, told Ogboji to do the needful by writing to the security agency in respect of the visit.

    E. G. Orubor, who appeared for the prosecution, did not oppose the application for adjournment and the judge adjourned the matter until March 25 for continuation of trial.

The judge also directed the secret police where the defendant is kept to allow his lawyer access to him.

A Department of State Seevices (DSS)’ witness, Yusuf Adams, testified in the last adjourned date against Oddiri.

Adams, the 1st prosecution witness (PW-1), told Justice Abdulmalik how he explored Oddiri’s phone and Facebook page during investigation to discover videos in which the defendant accused Olukoyede.of intercepting and stealing the ₦4 billion released by Heritage Operational Services Limited in favour of the Orogun Community in Delta.

The witness spoke while he was being led in evidence-in-chief by the prosecuting lawyer, Orubor.

The PW-1 added that the team requested receipts, bank statements from First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and Zenith Bank, as well as incorporation documents from the Corporate Affairs Commission relating to community development entities operating OML 30 in Delta, including the Orogun Kingdom Community Trust registered by the defendant.

“We also obtained copies of letters of admonishment from the EFCC to a petition submitted by the defendant to the commission.

“The petition written by the defendant accused the EFCC chairman and was addressed to the Serious Fraud Office in the United Kingdom, and a letter written by Wahab Shittu, SAN, counsel to the EFCC chairman, requesting the defendant to retract the allegation.

“We thereafter submitted a preliminary report to our superior,” Adams had said.

Oddiri was arraigned on a two- count charge bordering on cybercrimes and punishable under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes ( Prohibition, Prevention, etc) ( Amendment) Act 2024

In count one, Oddiri of Orogun, Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta, was alleged to have, sometime on or about Sept. 17, 2025, at Surulere, Lagos State, did use his Facebook handle page, Moses Oddiri, to send out a message.

It said the message was titled: “THIS THIEVING EFCC CHAIRMAN OLUKOYEDE, OF OVER 4 BILLION NAIRA OROGUN OIL COMMUNITY FUNDS PAID BY HERITAGE OIL IS ALSO BEING REPORTED TO HERITAGE OWNERS ACROSS THE GLOBE…”

The message, said to be false, was posted for the purpose of causing annoyance, inconvenience, insult and injury on the person of Mr Olukoyede “and hereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 24(1) of the Cybercrimes ( Prohibition, Prevention, etc) ( Amendment) Act 2024.”

Military eliminates 30 terrorists, rescues dozens of victims in 1 week

    By Sumaila Ogbaje

Abuja:  Troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria have continued to deliver decisive strikes against terrorist and criminal elements across multiple regions killing over 30 terrorists, including high-value targets.

The troops also rescued dozens of abducted victims during the coordinated operations between March 7 and March 12.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Michael Onoja, disclosed this in a weekly brief on the operations of the military in Abuja.

Onoja said that the troops of Operation HADIN KAI successfully curtailed terrorists’ movements and disrupted key supply lines across Yobe, Borno, and Adamawa.

He said the operations led to the apprehension of several key operatives, including logistics suppliers, tax collectors, and informants.

According to him, on March 9, troops recovered arms cache following repelled attacks in Mafa and Jere Local Government Areas of Borno.

“The following day, simultaneous assaults on FOB Tuba and Doro Baga were decisively thwarted.

“In Goniri, Yobe, troops repelled a multi-directional night attack, neutralising more than 20 terrorists, including Abu Yusu, the Munzir of Dursula, while recovering weapons, IEDs, and ammunition.

“Troops also rescued kidnapped victims and seized supplies meant for insurgents.

“In Adamawa, swift responses to distress calls in Madagali and Maiha Local Government Areas led to the recovery of 23 jerrycans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) intended for terrorist operations.

“Since 2015, Operation HADIN KAI has recorded the surrender of 122,843 insurgents, highlighting the sustained pressure on terrorist networks,” he said.

In North West, Onoja said the troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA struck terrorists in Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, and Zamfara States.

According to him, key operations include the rescue of abducted victims from Mpape-Kuyeri Forest along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor, the destruction of a terrorist enclave in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

He said there was also the interception of ammunition and rustled cattle in Gudu and Dagozawa villages.

“In the North Central region, the troops under Operations SAVANNAH SHIELD, ENDURING PEACE, and WHIRL STROKE maintained pressure on criminal and terrorist elements across Kwara, Niger, Plateau, Bauchi, Kaduna, Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, and Kogi States.

“The operations led to the neutralisation of terrorists, recovery of arms, and rescue of kidnapped victims.

“Notable successes include the rescue of multiple victims in Edu Local Government Area of Kwara, Riyom and Mangu Local Government Areas of Plateau, and the interception of explosives in Bauchi State,” he added.

He further said that in the South-South and South-East regions, troops of Operations DELTA SAFE and UDO KA targeted criminal and separatist networks, including the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“The operations resulted in the dismantling of illegal oil refining sites in Egbema West Local Government Area of Imo.

“Suspected kidnappers were also neutralised in Egoro Forest in Edo, and the disarming of IEDs along contested routes in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo, improving civilian access and safety,” he said.

Onoja emphasised that the ongoing operations, in spite of the challenges, reflected the courage and professionalism of the armed forces.

He said the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, had commended the public for providing timely intelligence.

Oluyede had also reaffirmed the military’s commitment to troop welfare, collaboration with other security agencies, and restoring lasting stability across the country. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

BREAKING: ‘I Don’t Want To Go to Prison’ — US Vice President Vance Refuses To Reveal Discussion With Trump On Iran

The vice president painted a picture of the sensitive nature of those deliberations.

The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, on Friday refused to disclose details of the advice he gave to the American president regarding tensions with Iran, stating bluntly that revealing such information could land him in prison and undermine confidential presidential consultations.

Vance made the remarks while responding to a question from a reporter who sought clarity on his role in advising the president during deliberations over U.S. policy and possible actions involving Iran.

During the exchange, the reporter asked: “What did you advise the president initially as he considered his actions in Iran and what are you urging him to do now…do you express any concerns like those you’ve expressed in the past on the possibility of these extended wars?” See M

  • Forty-Eight Hours !  Iran’s Ultimatum to Gulf States

Forty-Eight Hours !  Iran’s Ultimatum to Gulf States

    By Analyst

That is how long Iran just gave the family rulers in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar to make a choice that will define the Middle East for the next 50 years and more. Not a negotiating position, not diplomatic consultation. An ultimatum delivered through back channels to every Gulf monarchy simultaneously.

The message was identical to all of them: simple, binary, and catastrophic, regardless of which option they choose. Stop allowing American military forces to use your territory for strikes against Iran. Shut down the bases, deny overflight permissions, end the logistical support, or accept that your oil infrastructure, the thing your entire economy is built on, the thing that keeps your population fed and your cities powered, become a permanent military target that Iran will destroy systematically until nothing remains. Forty-eight hours to choose between economic suicide and strategic abandonment.

There is no third option. There is no middle ground, and the deadline is not negotiable. Iran made that clear. “We are not asking for your cooperation. We are informing you of the consequences of your choice. Choose America, and your oil fields burn. Choose your oil fields, and America leaves.” Either way, the Gulf that existed two weeks ago, the one where monarchies balanced relations with both sides, where neutrality was possible, where wealth bought safety, that Gulf is gone, and it is not coming back.

March 8, 2026: Iranian representatives delivered identical messages to Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, the UAE’s president, Kuwait’s emir, and Qatar’s leadership, not through official diplomatic channels, but through intelligence back channels that Gulf states maintain with Iran specifically for communications that cannot be public, the kind of channels you use when the message is too sensitive for formal diplomacy. The message was direct:

“Your territory is being used to launch attacks that kill Iranian civilians. American aircraft take off from your bases. American drones operate from your airfields. American missiles transit your airspace. American logistics networks run through your ports. Every one of those operations makes you a combatant. Not a neutral party, a combatant. And combatants pay the price in war. You have 48 hours to end American military use of your territory. After 48 hours, if American operations continue from your soil, we will begin systematically destroying your oil production infrastructure. Not your military bases. Your oil fields, your refineries, your export terminals, your pipelines, your storage facilities, everything you need to extract, process, and export the resource your economy depends on. We will destroy it methodically, completely, and irreversibly, and there is nothing you can do to stop us.”

The Gulf monarchies received this message and immediately understood three things. First, Iran is not bluffing. The last two weeks proved Iran can hit any target in the Gulf with precision. Saudi oil facilities have already been struck. Kuwaiti refineries have been hit. The capability has been demonstrated. Second, American defenses cannot protect Gulf oil infrastructure.

There are too many targets, too spread out, and too vulnerable. One Saudi oil field, Ghawar, has over 800 individual wellheads dispersed across 280 square kilometers. You cannot put a Patriot battery on every wellhead. You cannot intercept every missile when 50 launch simultaneously at 50 different targets. The math does not work. Third, the 48-hour deadline is real. Iran is not starting a negotiation. Iran is ending one. The decision point is here, now. And delaying is itself a choice that Iran will interpret as choosing America.

Let us walk through what each option actually means. Because this is not a diplomatic puzzle where clever negotiation finds a middle path. This is a binary trap where both doors lead to disaster.

Option one: choose America. Tell Iran that the Gulf states will not bow to ultimatums, that American alliance commitments matter, and that sovereignty means hosting whatever forces you choose. American bases stay. American operations continue. Iran follows through on its threat. Iranian missiles begin hitting Saudi oil fields. Aramco facilities that produce 10 million barrels per day start going offline. Not all at once. Systematically. One field per day, one refinery per week. A sustained campaign designed to reduce Saudi oil production from 10 million barrels per day to 5 million, then to 2 million, then to functionally zero over the course of three months.

What does that do to Saudi Arabia? Oil revenue is 87% of Saudi government income. When oil production drops 50%, government revenue drops 50%. Saudi Arabia cannot pay public-sector salaries, cannot subsidize food and fuel for its population, and cannot fund the social programs that keep 60% of unemployed youth from revolting. The country that bought stability with oil wealth loses the oil wealth. Stability follows. This is not hypothetical. This is arithmetic. And the Saudi government knows it.

The UAE faces the same calculation. Oil and gas revenue is 30% of GDP. More importantly, it is the foundation of everything else. The real estate market that foreign investors poured money into collapses when the country is a war zone. The tourism sector that Dubai built? Gone when airlines will not fly into a city under missile attack. The financial services industry relocates to Singapore when the bombs start falling. The UAE does not just lose oil revenue; it loses everything oil revenue enabled. Kuwait and Qatar: same story, different numbers, same outcome. Destroyed oil infrastructure means economic infrastructure collapses. An economic collapse in a rentier state means political collapse follows within months.

Option two: choose the oil. Tell America that Gulf states can no longer host US military forces. Bases close, overflights are denied, and American personnel are given 30 days to leave. Iran stops targeting oil infrastructure. The oil keeps flowing. The economy survives. And America leaves, permanently. Because once you eject American forces during a war, you do not get them back. The alliance is over, not paused. Over.

What does that mean strategically? It means the Gulf has no security guarantor. Iran becomes the regional hegemon by default. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar, all of them, become Iranian client states. Not through conquest. Through the simple reality that they cannot defend themselves, and the country that could defend them is gone. Iranian influence expands into every Gulf capital. Iranian preferences become Gulf policy. The monarchies that spent 70 years balancing against Iranian power just handed Iran everything it wanted without Iran firing a shot at them.

And America? America loses the Middle East, not just a war, but the region. Sixty years of alliance infrastructure, strategic positioning, military access, all of it gone because Gulf states chose survival over alliance. The American military presence that has defined the region since 1945 ends, not because America was defeated militarily, but because America’s allies concluded that American protection costs more than it provides.

Here is what makes this ultimatum strategically brilliant. The 48-hour deadline does not give Gulf states time to negotiate. It does not give America time to deploy additional defenses. It does not give anyone time to find a diplomatic exit. Forty-eight hours is just enough time to make the decision, not to escape it. Iran designed the timeline specifically to prevent the one thing Gulf states are experts at: delay and hedging.

Gulf monarchies have survived for decades by never fully committing to either side of regional rivalries. They maintain relations with America and Iran. They buy weapons from the West and maintain dialogue with Tehran. They host American bases and send delegations to Iranian leaders. This strategy worked because both sides tolerated it. Iran is no longer tolerating it. The ultimatum forces a choice that cannot be delayed, cannot be hedged, cannot be managed through the usual diplomatic ambiguity, and the 48 hours create a countdown that puts pressure on everyone simultaneously.

Saudi Arabia cannot wait to see what the UAE decides, because the deadline is the same for everyone. The UAE cannot coordinate with Kuwait, because there is no time for multilateral strategy sessions. Each country has to make its own calculation in isolation, under time pressure, with incomplete information. This is not diplomacy. This is coercion optimized for maximum effectiveness.

The deadline also prevents American intervention from changing the equation. Forty-eight hours is not enough time for the United States to deploy new defensive systems, negotiate security guarantees, or restructure its regional military posture. American officials can make promises, but they cannot deliver capability that changes the fundamental vulnerability of Gulf oil infrastructure in 48 hours. Iran made sure of that.

Let us talk about why American defenses cannot protect Gulf oil infrastructure. Because this is not a question of American commitment or willingness. This is physics, geometry, and target density. Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure: Ghawar oil field, the largest in the world, 280 square kilometers, over 800 individual wellheads; processing facilities at Abqaiq, the most important oil facility on Earth, process 7 million barrels per day; Ras Tanura export terminal loads 6 million barrels per day onto tankers; Shaybah field, Safaniyah field, and Manifa field, each one covering hundreds of square kilometers with dozens of critical points of failure. You cannot defend that with missile interceptors. A Patriot battery covers a radius of approximately 20 kilometers.

A former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu has died, aged 62.

The death of the Imo State-born midfielder was announced on Saturday morning by former teammate and 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner Segun Odegbami on his media platforms.

    “Henry Nwosu passes on!,

“After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday.

“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven,” Odegbami wrote.

Nwosu, who was the youngest member of the 1980 AFCON squad, was widely celebrated for his role in Nigeria’s triumph at the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Green Eagles secured their first continental title on home soil.

The midfielder was known for his vision, creativity and technical ability, and went on to become a prominent figure in Nigerian domestic football.

Following his retirement from active football, the former international remained connected to the sport as a coach and mentor, helping to nurture younger players.

Nwosu’s death comes days after Nigerian football lost another iconic figure. Former Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, died on March 9 at the age of 88.

Both Nwosu and Onigbinde were prominent members of the Green Eagles set-up of the 1980s, with Onigbinde having served as coach of the side between 1982 and 1984.

  • The Ibadan Court Order, Constitutional Supremacy, and the Limits of Regional Political Influence in NBA Presidential Elections

The Ibadan Court Order, Constitutional Supremacy, and the Limits of Regional Political Influence in NBA Presidential Elections

    By Sylvester Udemezue

    (1). *Introduction*

Reports that the High Court of Oyo State sitting in Ibadan, presided over by Honourable Justice Y. S. Adekunle in Suit No. I/205/2026, directed the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to adopt Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN (reportedly adopted by Egbe Amofin O’odua) as the sole candidate for the forthcoming NBA presidential election have generated widespread debate within the legal community.

The controversy raises fundamental legal questions concerning the constitutional framework governing NBA elections, the powers of regional fora such as Egbe Amofin O’odua, the principle of universal suffrage within the NBA, and the limits of judicial intervention in the democratic processes of voluntary professional associations.

These issues must be examined not through regional politics but through the binding provisions of the Constitution of the Nigerian Bar Association, 2015 (as amended in 2025). For lawyers, whose profession is anchored on constitutionalism and the rule of law, nothing must supersede the supremacy of the Association’s Constitution.

(2). *The Constitutional Framework Governing NBA National Elections*

The NBA Constitution establishes a universal suffrage system conducted through electronic voting. Section 10(6) provides that “Election into National Offices shall be by universal suffrage and electronic voting as set out in the Second Schedule to this Constitution.” The implication is clear: the electorate is not limited to regional bodies, caucuses, or delegates. Rather, all eligible members of the NBA constitute the electoral college. Section 4(1)(b) further provides that any member who fails to pay Annual Practising Fees on or before 31 March loses the right to vote or be voted for.

Accordingly, the NBA electorate consists of lawyers who have paid their practising fees and branch dues. Section 10(1) vests responsibility for conducting elections exclusively in the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), while Section 10(2) provides that the procedures governing elections are set out in the Second Schedule.

There is therefore NO constitutional provision empowering any regional forum (such as Egbe Amofin O’Odua) or a court of law to determine who must emerge as NBA President.

(3). *Historical Context of Universal Suffrage In The NBA*

Before 2015, NBA elections were conducted through a delegate system, where branch representatives voted on behalf of members. This system concentrated electoral power in the hands of a limited number of delegates. The 2015 constitutional reform introducing universal suffrage and electronic voting fundamentally transformed this structure by allowing every financially compliant lawyer to vote directly.

This reform significantly expanded democratic participation within the Association and placed ultimate electoral authority in the hands of the entire membership. Any process, political or judicial, that restricts electoral choices risks undermining this constitutional reform.

(4). *The Constitutional Status Of Egbe Amofin O’odua*

Egbe Amofin O’odua is a respected and influential association of lawyers of Yoruba extraction. It has historically served as a forum for consultations, mentorship, and promotion of candidates from the South-West. There is nothing unconstitutional about such political engagement. In democratic systems, political groups are free to organise and support candidates. However, Egbe Amofin is not a constitutional organ of the NBA. The Constitution recognises organs such as (a). the General Meeting, (b). the National Executive Council, (c). the National Executive Committee, (d). the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA). Regional professional associations are not decision-making organs under the NBA Constitution. Accordingly, while Egbe Amofin may adopt and support a candidate, it cannot impose a candidate on the NBA electorate.

(5). *The Constitutional Limits of Resolutions of Regional Bodies*

Recent discussions within the Nigerian Bar have highlighted concerns regarding the implications of resolutions purportedly adopted by regional bodies concerning NBA presidential elections. It is important to state clearly that regional resolutions cannot override constitutional provisions. The Constitution of the NBA is the supreme legal framework governing the affairs of the Association. Any act, decision, or resolution inconsistent with the Constitution must necessarily yield to the Constitution. Thus, even if a regional forum, such as Egbe Amofin, adopts a candidate through consensus, such adoption cannot (a). prevent other qualified lawyers from contesting the election, (b). compel other aspirants to withdraw from the race, or (c). bind the entire membership of the Nigerian Bar Association. At best, such adoption remains a political endorsement, not a constitutional command.

(6). *NBA Constitutional Provisions On Power-Rotation And Democratic Competition*

The idea of rotational presidency within the NBA has evolved over time as a political convention, and later as a constitutional provision, designed to promote regional balance within the leadership of the Association. The arrangement is useful in maintaining a sense of inclusion within the diverse Nigerian Bar. This is why it is also recognised in the Constitution (see Section 10(5)). However, where the presidency rotates to a particular region/zone, the constitutional framework still permits multiple candidates from that region/zone to contest the election. By virtue of Section 9(3) of the NBA Constitution, where the office of the NBA President is rotated to a particular Zone, any lawyer from that Zone who (1). has paid practising fees and branch dues for three consecutive years (including the election year), (2). is in private legal practice, (3). has previously served as a member of the National Executive Council for at least two years, and (4). is not less than fifteen years post-call, is constitutionally qualified to contest the office (of the NBA President). Adoption by any person or section, or regional group plays no role whatsoever as a qualifying factor for election into any NBA office. Indeed, in the 2026 election cycle, following the constitutional provisions on rotation among Zones (and internal rotation within sub-zones), the presidency is expected to emerge from the South-West geopolitical zone. However, this does not mean that only one lawyer from the South-West is entitled to contest. Every qualified lawyer from that region retains the full constitutional right to aspire to the office. The final decision must be made by the entire electorate of the Nigerian Bar Association through universal suffrage.

(7). *The Limits of Judicial Intervention In NBA’s Internal Electoral Processes*

Courts of law play a critical role in safeguarding legality and protecting rights within voluntary or professional associations such as the NBA. However, judicial intervention must always be exercised with caution, especially where such intervention affects internal democratic processes. Professional associations thrive on institutional autonomy and internal democracy. If a judicial order has the practical effect of limiting the electoral choices available to thousands of lawyers across Nigeria, such consequences must be carefully examined against the constitutional provisions governing the Association. Courts must always strive to preserve, not inadvertently distort, the democratic architecture established by the governing constitution of the institution concerned. If regional bodies such as Egbe Amofin were permitted to impose candidates on the NBA through resolutions or litigation, the consequences could be troubling. Other regional or sectional fora, such as the Eastern Bar Forum, Arewa Lawyers Forum, the Midwest Bar Forum, the Young Lawyers Forum, MULAN, CLASFON, NACL, BOSAN, and other sectional groups, could attempt similar strategies. The result would be multiple competing claims over the same election, potentially leading to institutional chaos. The Nigerian Bar Association cannot function effectively if its electoral process becomes subject to fragmented sectional control. The Supreme Court of Nigeria has consistently maintained that courts must exercise restraint in matters relating to the internal affairs of voluntary associations. In Onuoha v. Okafor (1983) 2 SCNLR 244, the Supreme Court held that issues relating to internal selection of candidates within an organisation are generally non-justiciable. This principle was reaffirmed in Dalhatu v. Turaki (2003) 15 NWLR (Pt. 843) 310, where the Court emphasised that courts are not established to determine who should emerge as leader or candidate within an association except where the governing constitution has been breached. Similarly, in Emenike v. PDP (2012) 12 NWLR (Pt. 1315) 556, the Supreme Court reiterated that where an organisation’s constitution provides a procedure for selecting candidates, courts will intervene only where that procedure has been violated. These authorities underscore a fundamental constitutional principle: the courts are guardians of legality, not substitutes for the democratic processes established by the constitution of an association. Accordingly, the NBA, like every voluntary association, enjoys autonomy over its internal affairs. Unless it is shown that the association has violated its own Constitution or the law, the courts will not interfere. Courts do not substitute their own judgment for that of a political party or voluntary association in matters within their internal domain. See Alhaji Balarabe Musa v. Peoples Redemption Party (1981) 2 NCLR 763 at 769.
Similarly, in Ogboro v. Registered Trustees of Lagos Polo Club (2016) LPELR-40061(CA), the Court of Appeal held (per Nimpar, JCA) that “when one joins a voluntary association, he must be prepared to abide by the rules and regulations of the association.” See also Mbanefo v. Molokwu (2009) 11 NWLR (Pt.1153) 431.
Consequently, a court has no power to amend, add to, or subtract from the Constitution of a voluntary organisation, nor to depart from its clear provisions in search of a convenient interpretation. See Omatseye v. Federal Republic of Nigeria (2017) LPELR-42719(CA); Aromolaran v. Agoro (2014) LPELR-24037 (SC); and Adewunmi v. Attorney‑General of Ekiti State (2002) 2 NWLR (Pt.751) 474.

(8). *The Doctrine of Popular Sovereignty And The Electoral Sovereignty Of NBA Members*

At a deeper level, the NBA electoral system reflects the democratic principle of popular sovereignty: the idea that ultimate authority resides in the people. Within the NBA, that sovereignty resides in financially compliant members across Nigeria. By adopting universal suffrage and electronic voting, the NBA has constitutionalised the principle that the presidency of the Association derives legitimacy from the collective will of its members, not from regional endorsement. Regional consultations may influence politics, but they cannot replace the sovereign electoral will of the Bar.

    (9). *Conclusion*

The constitutional framework of the Nigerian Bar Association leaves no room for ambiguity. Elections into national offices are conducted through universal suffrage and electronic voting, and the electorate consists of all financially compliant members of the Bar across Nigeria. The Constitution vests responsibility for conducting elections exclusively in the ECNBA. Regional associations, professional caucuses, and political forums may legitimately organise consultations, endorse candidates, and campaign vigorously for their preferred aspirants. Such political activity is part of the democratic culture of any vibrant professional body.

However, these endorsements remain political expressions of preference, not constitutional determinations of leadership. The presidency of the Nigerian Bar Association cannot therefore be determined by regional adoption, caucus resolutions, or sectional endorsements or the courts. It can only be determined through the constitutional mechanism of universal suffrage, in which eligible lawyers across Nigeria freely exercise their voting rights.

Ultimately, the sovereignty of the Nigerian Bar Association resides not in regional blocs, not in political caucuses, and not in court orders nor in judicial directives, but in the collective will of its members expressed through the ballot. That constitutional principle lies at the heart of the democratic identity of the Nigerian Bar Association and must remain inviolate.
