As we celebrate Aremo Olusegun Osoba’s 85th birthday, we honour a man whose life and career embody the struggle for democracy, integrity, and service. Born on July 15, 1939, Osoba’s journey has been a testament to unwavering dedication and resilience in the face of adversity, marking him as an enduring icon of democracy in Nigeria.

Osoba’s early life was shaped by his passion for journalism, which he pursued with vigour and excellence.
His foray into the world of media began at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in 1964, where his knack for investigative journalism quickly distinguished him as a fearless and ethical journalist.
His work at the Daily Times and later as the Managing Director of Sketch and Herald newspapers set high standards for the media landscape in Nigeria.

However, it is Osoba’s political career that truly underscores his legacy as a stalwart of democracy. He first ventured into politics in the early 1990s, at a time when Nigeria was yearning for true democratic governance. Elected as the Governor of Ogun State in 1992 under the Social Democratic Party, his tenure was unfortunately cut short by the military coup of 1993. Yet, this setback did not deter him.
Osoba’s commitment to democratic principles saw him return to the political arena, where he was re-elected as Governor in 1999 under the Alliance for Democracy, following the restoration of civilian rule.

During his term as Governor, Osoba’s administration was marked by significant infrastructural development, educational reforms, and policies aimed at improving the welfare of the people. His leadership was characterized by transparency, accountability, and a genuine desire to uplift his constituents, reflecting his deep-seated belief in the power of democracy to effect positive change.

Beyond his administrative achievements, Osoba’s role in the broader democratic movement in Nigeria cannot be overstated. He has been a vocal advocate for press freedom, recognizing the crucial role of a free press in sustaining democracy. His efforts have inspired many in the fight against oppression and for the rights of the common man.

As Aremo Olusegun Osoba turns 85, we reflect on his indelible contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution. His life story is a beacon of hope and inspiration for future generations, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, ethical leadership, and a commitment to public service.

Today, we’re not only celebrating his birthday but also his enduring legacy. We congratulate Aremo Olusegun Osoba on this remarkable milestone and express our profound gratitude for his tireless efforts in championing democracy and good governance in Nigeria. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide the nation towards a brighter, more democratic future.

Happy 85th birthday, Aremo Olusegun Osoba! May your life continue to be a source of inspiration and strength for all who believe in the power of democracy and the pursuit of justice.
