  • How Nigeria spends $1.2bn to import fish annually – Emefiele

The Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele says about 1.2 billion dollars worth of fish is imported into the country annually.

Emefiele disclosed this in Abuja on Thursday while briefing some state Governors and the media on the feat recorded so far in agriculture for economic growth.

He explained that current fish production stood at 0.8 million tons while the demand was 2.7 million tons, giving a deficit of 1.9 million tons.

He said the apex bank’s current initiative was to enagage the coastal state governors to develop the blue economy to address the deficit of 1.9metric tons as well as eradicate the huge import bill for fish.

According to him, this is a very huge economic opportunity for the states to create an enabling environment for investors.

In a similar development, the governor said that major innovation to deepen the poultry business was the recent partnership between the bank and tertiary institutions to pilot the “The University–Based Poultry Production Programme” in twelve 12 Universities across the six geo-political zones.

He added that the objective was not only building future agripreneurs but making the universities able to improve their internally generated revenue.

“For the pilot phase, five Nigerian Universities, namely; Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, University of Nigeria, Nsukka and University of Ilorin were enrolled.

“These Universities have submitted revised proposal to their respective sponsoring banks,” he said.

  • Tech Entrepreneur, Stephanie Obi to help Africans Monetize their Knowledge with Latest Tech Platform

From vlogging everyday life experiences to shopping for groceries online and even getting a university degree from the comfort of your living room, technology is constantly changing the way we work and live. Knowledge is bounced off from one time zone to another in nanoseconds, creating a level playing field for everyone who can access the internet. However, this ability to share knowledge and solutions online often comes with the price of being tech-savvy or having the resources to pay someone, which could cost so much time and money.

Thanks to Nigerian techpreneur Stephanie Obi, this is about to change with a new digital platform, Train Quarters which she created with the aim of solving an age-long problem faced by modern content providers. According to Obi, Train Quarters which is the first of its kind in Africa, is an online course platform that makes it easy for Africans to create and sell online courses. “The beauty of this is, you don’t need to be tech-savvy to use the platform!” she said.

On the platform’s simplicity and ease of use, Obi added that “after working with over 200 women to create their online courses, we noticed a trend – The Tech! The tech is very scary. It is overwhelming and many times people feel stuck and disappointed. Many of them wanted to impact lives but they gave up because of the tech. We saw them struggling which was hard to watch so we decided to help them make it easier.”

From creating, marketing and selling courses to building a website, email list, blogpost hosting, etc. while taking away the stress and extra costs of going through a time consuming process, the platform is said to contain everything needed to launch an online course. The all-in-one platform grants users access to online courses at a discounted rate – rather than paying for different platforms – along with the assistance of the support team to enlighten and guide one through the process.

According to Obi, whilst the platform was created with different plans for those who wish to teach their knowledge and expertise online, it also allows users to create and own their own websites, grow their online community as well as offers a simplified payment method. “On September 19, 2019 we will officially launch TrainQuarters and do a live demo for guests to see the solution we have created to provide a level playing field for Africans” an excited Obi revealed. According to her, further details about the platform and also how to attend this free event will be on www.trainquarters.com

You can also visit the platform to watch the tutorial video and request an invitation to see how you too can monetize your knowledge.

  • Girl commits suicide 3 months after boyfriend killed self

(FLOWERBUDNEWS) An apprentice at a tailoring shop in Lagos, Adenike Fatai, reportedly committed suicide just three months after her boyfriend identified as Bayo Atanda also killed self.

The 25-year-old indigene of Kwara State who lived with her mother at Igbekele Street, Iyana Cele bus stop, Shibiri area of Lagos State has reportedly been battling depression since her boyfriend died and she took a poisonous substance suspected to be ‘sniper’.

Though she left no suicide note, a quick check on her Facebook page revealed that she engaged in posts which centred on death and depression.

It was further learnt that her trauma was heightened by her late boyfriend family and friends’ allegation of causing his death.

Tawa, Adenike’s mother who confirmed her death told Punch that she met her dead after she returned home from evening prayer.

She said, “That day, she finished cooking around 7pm and ate. She was outside after eating while I went to the mosque. Around 8pm, she came to the mosque to collect the key to our apartment and I told her to check the shop.

“On getting home some minutes after, I saw her lying on the floor with a bottle of sniper beside her. I called for help but it was late.

“She was learning tailoring in her sister’s place in Ikorodu. All of a sudden, her boss sent her away. She told me she had got another place to learn the vocation in Orile and that she would be living with a friend. I asked her to come and learn it at my place but she refused.

“Whenever I asked to see the friend, she would say she was not around. It was when I threatened to disown her that she told me she was living with her boyfriend. I tried to convince her that what she did was wrong, but she said the man’s (Bayo’s) house was close to where she was learning tailoring. I met with the man and he said he really wanted to marry her. He looked very gentle. We were planning the introduction when he died.

“On a Sunday around 11pm, my daughter called me and started crying on the phone. She said Bayo drank sniper. They took him to the Lagos Island General Hospital, but he died the following morning. That time, she said she would follow him and I tried to caution her.”

Tawa admitted that Adenike got depressed after her boyfriend’s death and even relocated to Ikorodu area of Lagos state. She however said she (Adenike) returned after her condition improved.

“I never thought she was thinking of suicide because she looked happy. Some clerics warned us that death was hovering around her and I prayed over it.

“I learnt she called somebody that evening and told the person that she wanted to go and meet Bayo and that she would drink sniper. I don’t know the kind of love she had for him.

“There was a day a friend of Bayo called her and accused her of killing him. I told her to ignore them. The mistake I made was that I should have changed her SIM card,” she added.

Also confirming the death of his daughter, Adenike’s father said he never knew she was battling depression. Idris said he only spoke to her on the phone since he separated from her mother.

  • Defection: Sen. Amange wasn’t part of us – Bayelsa PDP

(FLOWERBUDNEWS) The Bayelsa chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has disowned the former senator representing Bayelsa East Senatorial District, Sen. Nimi Amange, saying he was not a member of the party.

Amange was a PDP senator from 2007 to 2011 and represented former President Goodluck Jonathan’s constituency, but announced his defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a swift reaction to Amange’s defection, the state Chairman of PDP, Mr Moses Cleopas, stated that the former lawmaker was not a member of PDP.

Cleopas said in a statement issued in Yenagoa that Amange ceased to be a member of PDP before the February National Assembly (NASS) elections when he defected from PDP to African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Amange had on Thursday claimed that he left PDP because of Gov. Seriake Dickson’s “unilateral style of leadership,” which he likened to an emperor.

However, Cleopas, while defending Dickson, described Amange’s stance as “unfortunate and mischievous attempt to create false impression of an implosion within a party that is stable.”

According to Cleopas, the PDP family in Bayelsa does not see Amange as a member of the party after he defected to ADC early this year.

“There is a misleading report that Amange has defected from PDP to APC.

“The fact is that Amange is not a member of our party. He defected from PDP to ADC to contest against us in the February NASS election and lost.

“Sen. Amange is not a PDP leader and the public should discountenance this misleading claim.

“This unfortunate claim is part of a calculated attempt to create an erroneous impression of an implosion in a party that is stable.

“PDP in the state knows those who are genuine members. Amange is not one of us and he should desist from misinforming the public with the intent to cause mischief,” the statement further read.

Amange had in a letter to the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, made available to newsmen, stated that he had resigned his membership of his former party to join APC, ahead of the Nov. 16 governorship poll in Bayelsa.

He also predicted bright chances for APC in the Nov. 16 governorship poll in the state.

He said: “APC governorship candidate, David Lyon, hails from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (LGA), with the highest voting strength.

“I come from Nembe LGA and by my joining APC, Nembe has fallen into the hands of APC.

“Brass LGA is Chief Timipre Sylva’s area and therefore an APC stronghold.

“So, those three LGs are gone and we can give Kolokuma/Opokuma, the smallest LGA, to PDP because their candidate is from there.

“Then Sagbama LGA, where the governor comes from, will be donated to him because PDP’s running mate is from Sagbama.

“The question is, what will other LGAs do? So, we are taking three, they are taking two. The remaining three LGAs is 50/50,” Amange said. (NAN)
