Tambuwal to world powers: Nigeria’s insecurity is criminal, not religious

FORMER Sokoto State Governor and Senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, Aminu Tambuwal, on Saturday issued a strong national and international call for urgent support to help Nigeria overcome its worsening security crisis, describing the situation as alarming and demanding collective action at home and abroad.

Addressing journalists at his residence in Sokoto metropolis, Tambuwal stressed that insecurity in Nigeria cuts across all regions and faiths, warning against attempts to give the crisis a religious colouration.

He said bandits and armed marauders do not represent any religion, but are criminals driven by violence and lawlessness.

“The insecurity we face today affects Nigerians of all faiths and backgrounds. These criminals spare nobody. Their crusade is purely criminal in nature and has nothing to do with religion,” he said, adding that communities in Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi and beyond have all suffered devastating attacks.
Tambuwal appealed to the United States government to reconsider Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern, urging Washington to instead partner constructively with the administration of President Bola Tinubu to tackle the nation’s security challenges.

He described comments attributed to former US President Donald Trump on Nigeria as “quite unfortunate,” arguing that they failed to fully appreciate the realities on ground.

Tambuwal said the position earlier expressed by the Pope that Nigerians of all religions are victims of insecurity better reflects the true situation.

“Insecurity in Nigeria is not about religion. These marauders are common criminals who attack everyone they encounter. Christians, Muslims and people of all beliefs are affected alike,” he emphasised.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives called on global partners including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and others to support Nigeria with intelligence, equipment and strategic cooperation to defeat violent criminal networks.
Tambuwal also urged Nigerian leaders across party lines to rally behind President Tinubu in the national interest, insisting that security must never be politicised. “This is not about any individual, party or government. It is about Nigeria and the safety of our people,” he said.

Recalling bipartisan cooperation during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, Tambuwal cited the collective decision by governors across political parties to approve billions of dollars for the purchase of military equipment, including Tucano aircraft, in defense of the nation.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current security challenge requires the same unity of purpose, noting that places of worship, farms, highways and rural communities are all under threat.

“As leaders who have been privileged by this country, we must approach this crisis from a pan Nigerian and patriotic standpoint. Every hand must be on deck to free our people from the shackles of insecurity,” Tambuwal declared.

He charged journalists to play their role responsibly by drawing national and international attention to the gravity of the crisis, providing objective analysis and mobilising well-meaning citizens in support of the ongoing fight to restore peace and stability across Nigeria.

APC critises Tambuwal’s legacies in Sokoto

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Isa Achida, has criticised the eight-year administration of former Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, describing it as ”era of stagnation ” in the state.

Achida made the criticism in an interview with the newsmen on Tuesday in Sokoto.

He alleged that Tambuwal has refused to formally hand over to incumbent Gov. Ahmed Aliyu in 2023 to avoid being documented as leaving behind “a state riddled with abandoned projects.

The APC chairman said that Tambuwal deliberately aimed at frustrating the Aliyu administration.

He, however, praised the incumbent governor for what he described as prudent financial management and visible infrastructure delivery without borrowing.

“Since Aliyu assumed office, salaries are paid on or before the end of every month, the new minimum wage has been implemented, and major projects are ongoing all without loans.

“He is focused on the welfare of the people, not looting their resources,” Achida said.

Achida further argued that the former governor lacked an independent base, relying heavily on godfathers such as Sen. Aliyu Wamakko to secure power.

The party chairman noted that Tambuwal would not contest the next governorship or senatorial elections, declaring him “politically retired.”

“No Abuja alliance, no media propaganda, no recycled coalition can revive a politician whose only legacy is propaganda and a collapsed state,” the APC chairman said.

2027: Tambuwal Dismisses Northern Agenda Claim, Says Move Against Tinubu Has Nationwide Backing

Aminu Tambuwal, former governor of Sokoto State, says he is committed to working with opposition leaders to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Friday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Tambuwal
    described

the coalition’s plan to oust the president as a “national consensus.”

“I am fully involved in a process—democratically and lawfully—that will end, by the grace of God, in sending this government out of office. With the help of God and Nigeria, we will send these people out of office,” he said.

The Sokoto lawmaker also rejected the notion that the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition is a pro-northern agenda, adding that the opposition front is a “broad national coalition.”

“Is Peter Obi from Northern Nigeria? Is Aregbesola not from Osun State? What are you telling me? Are they not all part of the coalition?” Tambuwal asked.

He noted that there should be a change of government through constitutional and democratic means on May 29, 2027.

The former speaker of the House of Representatives accused Tinubu’s administration of failing to meet the expectations of Nigerians.

“It is not cast in stone that he may not lose in 2027. Every effort being made to make it if he is invisible—that Bola Tinubu cannot be defeated—is rubbish,” he said.

“He can be defeated; I believe so. I am working along with the coalition leaders to do that in the interest of the country. It is not about Bola Tinubu. It is about the way he is running the country.”

Tambuwal added that Tinubu cannot defeat an opposition comprising former President Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

“It will be easier for the opposition to form an alliance to defeat Tinubu. But if Tinubu, Jonathan, Atiku, Peter Obi, and Kwankwaso run in the same election, that would be easy for Tinubu to win,” he added.

“When this happens the dynamics will be different, and a lot of things will change the way people will vote.”

On his favourite presidential candidate, Tambuwal said, “When they all declare openly, then I will come back and tell you my choice.
