  • N21b, PVCs not found in Lawal Daura’s houses: DSS

The  Department of State Services (DSS) has debunked the fake news  and videos circulating in the social media about the alleged recovery of N21 billion, PVCs and weapons in the Katsina and Abuja homes of its sacked  Director General, Lawal Daura.

In a statement today, Tony Opuiyo, spokesman of the secret service said the alleged items  were  non-existent.

The fake news media industry had alleged that N21 billion in cash, Twenty One Billion Naira (N21bn) cash, 400 assorted and sophisticated small arms and light weapons/rifles and thousands of Permanent Voters Card (PVC) belonging to Niger Republic immigrants were found in Daura’s homes.

In some fake video also in circulation, some persons believed to be personnel of a security outfit were seen forcing open safes stocked with money. The security operatives were described as executing a recovery operation at the Katsina home of the former DGSS.

The DSS said categorically that the videos are false and should be disregarded.

“So far, no such recovery operations have been undertaken by the EFCC or any other security agency at DSS’ office or residences of the former DG”, Opuiyo said..

“There is no doubt that different interests have continued to give varied accounts of the incident of last week at the National Assembly.

“It may, however, be recalled that the Presidency had pledged to carry out a detailed investigation regarding the alleged National Assembly siege.

“The public is, therefore, advised to exercise restraint in their narration of events and as such, desist from spreading fake news or engaging in activities that may mislead or further cause a breach of the peace as well as preempt the outcome of investigations”, Opuiyo said.

Lawal Daura was sacked last week Tuesday on the orders of Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, following the blockade of the gates of the National Assembly by hooded and armed DSS operatives.

Osinbajo slammed the action  as a gross violation of constitutional order, rule of law and all accepted notions of law and order. He said the blockade was unauthorised by the executive.

According to him, the unlawful act which was done without the knowledge of the Presidency is condemnable and completely unacceptable.

A statement issued by Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Acting President, said that the action of the DSS was  not authorised by the presidency.

Daura, who was born on 5 August, 1953, was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on 2 July 2015, following the dismissal of his predecessor Ita Ekpeyong.

He once worked in the service and retired.

Acting President Osinbajo has appointed Matthew Seiyefa as acting DG of the agency.

Mr. Daura has been directed to hand over to the most senior officer of the State Security Service until further notice.

Operatives of the DSS, wearing masks blocked the gates of the National Assembly this morning, preventing senators and workers from gaining entrance.

Some PDP senators, who were caught in the blockade interpreted it as a move to impeach Senate President Bukola Saraki. But it turned out there was nothing like that in the offing as no APC senator was in the National Assembly when they were creating the row outside the gate.

The blockade has been roundly condemned as anti-democratic and has made the leadership of the National Assembly to call off a scheduled meeting this afternoon, that would probably have paved way for the reconvening of the Assembly.

Members of the two-chamber legislature went on break on 24 July. They were scheduled to resume on 25 September. The executive arm of government has issued a red alert that the recess may lead to a government shutdown.

The Police today in Abuja reaffirmed that Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki had a case to answer over the  Aril 5, 2018 robbery in Offa in which about 31 persons reportedly were killed.

Force  Headquarters said in a statement by the Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood,  the Force Public Relations Officer that the Offa robbery incident was still under investigation.

Moshood debunked media reports that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) advice had exonerated Dr. Saraki, explaining that the DPP “only called for further investigations into the matter”,

Moshood said:The attention of the Nigeria Police Force has been drawn to publication on Premium Times Online Media publication credited to one Samuel Ogundipe, that “there was no evidence that linked Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki and Kwara State Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed to the Armed Robbery attack that left 31 persons dead in Offa, Kwara State, in April, Premium Times can now confirm”

“It is incumbent on the Force to educate the writer of the story that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of the Federation in the legal advice did not restrain or restrict the Force from investigating further, the indictments against the Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki and the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulfattah Ahmed by the principal suspects arrested in connection with the Offa bank robbery of 5th April, 2018.

“The DPP advice did not exonerate the Senate President, it only called for further investigations into the matter

“It is in the course of further investigations into the case that a letter of invitation dated 23rd July, 2018 was sent to the Senate President to appear on 24th July, 2018 at 8.00am before the Investigation Team at Intelligence Response Team office, Guzape Junction, Abuja.

“ Furthermore, the Force wishes to inform the media and the public that investigation is still ongoing on the Offa bank robbery and the indictment against the Senate President from the confessions of some the arrested principal suspects, and that, there is no  political influence or consideration in the matter.
