JUST-IN: Senate Rejects Live Coverage As Natasha Appears Before Panel Wednesday

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions has rejected calls for live television coverage of its proceedings as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central appears before the panel over alleged misconduct on Wednesday.

The chairman of the committee, Senator Neda Imasuen disclosed this during an interview on Arise News TV’s ‘The Morning Show’ monitored by our correspondent.

Explaining the committee’s decision, Imasuen emphasised the need to maintain focus on the issue at hand without external distractions.

“On the issue of the media, we also want to be very careful so that we don’t overplay things. It is a matter within the Senate, and to make it a media affair may even be distractive to us. My committee room can only take so many people—not many—and the committee has about 23 or 24 members. We want to stay focused on the issue before us and not be distracted by any other matter.”

He assured that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan would be given a fair hearing, stating: “Distinguished Senator Natasha has privileges just like any other senator, and her privileges will be protected. She will get a fair hearing in this matter as far as I am there. She is my friend, and no one will trample on her rights.”

When questioned about the ongoing controversy regarding alleged sexual misconduct in the Senate, Imasuen declined to comment, citing legal constraints.

“The issue of sex in the Senate is already before a law court, I believe, and that makes the whole conversation subjudice. I cannot comment on any matter that is before a law court, and as a lawyer myself, I have to respect that privilege.”

The committee chairman also addressed concerns about sitting arrangements in the Senate, which have reportedly contributed to tensions.

He referenced the Senate’s procedural rules, stating, “The matter before us in the committee is about seating arrangements. I can only direct you to Order Six of our rule book, which regulates the activities of the Senate. It clearly states that seats are allocated to senators just like our offices, and from time to time, anything can happen to necessitate the reallocation of seats.”

Senator Imasuen dismissed claims of gender-based discrimination in Senate proceedings, asserting that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, does not single out female senators for unfair treatment.

“There are four female senators in this Assembly, and I will tell you straight up that I am very close to at least three of them. I sit next to Senator Ireti Kingibe, and I consider her a friend.

“The issue in question does not concern sexual harassment. It is a matter of privilege, and I do not believe it was directed at any individual because of their gender. There are many times I raise my hand to speak, and the Senate President does not recognise me while recognising someone behind me. But he cannot entertain every senator’s opinion at every sitting. It is his prerogative.

“The Senate President, in my opinion, has not made any sexual remarks to any of the female senators, and I don’t think any of the female senators have complained about sexual harassment against him or anyone else. We joke a lot in the Senate, I must let you know that,” he said.

Concluding his remarks, Imasuen urged Nigerians to allow the committee to handle the case without undue interference.

“Everybody should be patient and allow us to handle the case before us,” he said.

  • Ramos-Horta urges Nigeria to prioritise trade, technology, diplomacy

Ramos-Horta urges Nigeria to prioritise trade, technology, diplomacy

    By Taiye Olayemi

President Ramos-Horta of Timor‑Leste, Southeast Asia, has urged Nigeria to leverage its significant resources to shape its future in international trade, technology and diplomacy.

Ramos-Horta made the call during a symposium organised in honour of a diplomat, Prof. Babafemi Badejo’s 70th birthday on Tuesday in Lagos.

Badejo is a scholar and former deputy special representative of the UN Secretary-General at the UN Political Office for Somalia

The theme of the symposium is “Politics is Interest: Interrogating the Role of Special Interests in Nigeria’s development”.

The president called on Nigerian and African leaders alike to assert themselves in the evolving global order.

“Rather than being a pawn in global rivalries, Nigeria should leverage its position to shape international trade, technology and diplomatic partnerships that align with its developmental goals.

“Nigeria must define its interests, not have them dictated by others. A huge country, with the human and natural resources that Nigeria has, should not have anything to do with competing for paltry international aid that only builds dependency.

He urged Nigerian leaders to prioritise national development.

He said this was important considering Nigeria’s history which is characterised by resilience, also a history shaped by competing interests of political elites, multinational corporations and global powers.

He said that this was what Badejo aptly referred to as “external dynamics”.

“Nigeria must harness its wealth, its intellectual capital, human resources, and its abundant natural endowments to serve its people first.

“Just like Donald Trump has been reiterating “America First”, Nigerian governments and its people should increasingly insist on “Nigeria First”.

“This projection of “Nigeria First” must be done in a manner that boosts production and productivity and promotes healthy competition in the lookout for the best Interests of its people.

“Ideally, “America or Nigeria first” does not equate to crushing down on other countries.

“Our lives are so interconnected across the globe that economic illnesses starting in a major economy quickly reverberate and sink other economies across its borders and beyond.

“And instability and conflicts in mineral rich countries of the South fuelled by external interests always have a boomerang effect,” he said,” he said.

The president commended Badejo’s wealth of contribution toward nation building.

He describeed the scholar as an accomplished academia who writes beautifully.

He said “Prof. Badejo was my Chief of Staff in Guinea-Bissau when we began a working relationship that evolved into friendship lasting till today.

“I am very pleased to join you today in celebrating the life and achievements of a distinguished scholar, friend and colleague in global affairs, Prof. Badejo.

“His contributions to political thought and governance have enriched Nigeria’s intellectual society and offered insights into the complex interplay of interests that shape politics.

“He facilitated meetings with Heads of State in the West African sub-region. We worked hard together to restore constitutional order, return the military to the barracks, and hold free and transparent elections in Guinea-Bissau.”

Also speaking, Badejo’s school teacher at Ijebu Ode Grammar School, Mr Tony Finch relayed beautiful memories with Badejo as Finch described him as a brilliant fellow.

Going forward, Badejo said, “I will have to reinvent myself because as you know, this is retirement at the formal level. However, if you want to be taking annual extension, I will not find it difficult.

“There is so much that I need to write. I have many books that I’ve written. One is almost ready on the peace process in Somalia.

“I am also interested in looking at federal character in Nigeria and the problem of development that we face as a result. I will reinvent myself for all of these.

“The essence of this symposium is to make people realise that it is important they always get involved… getting their interests satisfied in society.”

A government’s visionary leadership can be gauged by the life-changing projects undertaken to uplift the lives of its citizens. When a government is dedicated and accountable to its people, citizens tend to express heartfelt gratitude and unwavering trust in its leadership.

This is precisely why the residents of Osun State must commend and celebrate the present administration in the state, led by Governor Jackson Ademola Adeleke, for his unwavering commitment to the state’s economic growth since assuming office in 2022, prioritizing the welfare and well-being of the people.

Governor Ademola Adeleke announced on October 27, 2023, an N100 billion infrastructure development plan for the state. The project according to him, has five flyovers and 45 roads across the 30 local government areas to ease traffic and boost economic across the state.

One of the numerous revolutionary and enduring projects of the Governor Adeleke-led administration in the state is the Oke-fia flyover bridge in Osogbo, the state capital.

The construction of a seven-span bridge at the Oke-Fia intersection, Osogbo was flagged off in December, 2023 and awarded to A’skorj Nigeria Limited, according to the governor, the project is expected to be commissioned within 12 months.

This project, in my professional assessment, is a game-changer and a bold step towards augmenting the economic values of the state. With its strategic location, the project will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the state capital but also easy traffic logjam of the area.

This remarkable project is a shining example of what can be achieved when visionary leadership meets determination and hard work. It is a testament to the power of collaborative governance and the impact it can have on the lives of citizens.

As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that even the most ambitious projects can become a reality with the right mindset and leadership.

So let us continue to support and celebrate our leaders who are working tirelessly to build a better future for us all. Let us recognize the transformative power of projects like the Oke-fia flyover and the positive impact they can have on the state economy and communities at large.

Together, we can build a brighter future for Osun State and create a legacy of hope and prosperity that will inspire generations to come.

Flag-Off of dualization of Benin-Ajaokuta road project, the realisation of tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda – TMV

    By Majeed Ishola

The Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV) has applauded President Bola Tinubu’s administration for the flag-off of the dualization of sections two to four of the Ekpoma-Auchi-Okpella-Okene-Ajaokuta expressway.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Chukwudi Enekwechi and Secretary Shadrach Sunday, TMV noted that the move has brought hope to motorists using the road linking Edo and Kogi states.

It said: “We note that the Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi had, while flagging off the road project on behalf of President Tinubu, stated that the road construction was in line with the Tinubu administration’s commitment to “making roads across the country motorable”.

“We are of the view that with the flag off the dualization work, motorists moving to the western, eastern, and northern parts of the country would heave a sigh of relief. It will also enhance economic activities for residents of Kogi and Edo States living along the road corridor.

“We also want to remind Nigerians that this road project had been abandoned for several years since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) years, despite huge capital allocations committed to it.

“We therefore commend the Works Minister for crystallizing the vision of President Tinubu through the construction of critical road infrastructure in the country.

“Over the years this road had been abandoned and became a source of inconvenience and frustration to road users, but finally the Tinubu administration is changing the narrative with emphasis on leaving a lasting legacy of quality roads.”

The group also urged Nigerians to continue to support the Tinubu administration in its efforts to rebuild the country’s road infrastructure.

  • Edo governorship poll: Tribunal reserves judgment on PDP’s petition against Okpebholo’s victory

Edo governorship poll: Tribunal reserves judgment on PDP’s petition against Okpebholo’s victory

    Flowerbudnews

The Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja, on Monday, reserved judgment in the petitioned filed by Dr Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the victory of Gov. Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the September 2024 election.

The three-man panel, chaired by Justice Wilfred Kpochi, informed the parties after adoption of the process, that a date for the judgement would be communicated to the parties involved.

Ighodalo and PDP is praying the tribunal to void Okpebholo’s victory, citing irregularities and non-compliance with electoral laws.

Ken Mozia, SAN, who represented the petitioners, contended that the PDP had successfully demonstrated electoral malpractices in 765 polling units out of 4,519 across the state.

He emphasised that election petitions should be determined by the impact of irregularities, not just the percentage of affected polling units.

Mozia highlighted discrepancies at various collation levels, where figures on Form EC8A (polling unit results) were allegedly reduced at the ward and local government collation stages (EC8B).

He also argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had certified all documents tendered by the petitioners, yet failed to present any counter-evidence.

“The issue is not about producing an alternative result, but about questioning the validity of the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal uploads,” Mozia stated, urging the tribunal to nullify the election.

INEC’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi, SAN, maintained that the PDP’s petition lacked merit, arguing that the petitioners had failed to tender actual election results to back their claims.

He insisted that the petition could not stand since the PDP did not provide an alternative result proving their victory.

The lawyer argued that the election could not be invalidated and still have the PDP declared winners.

According to him The BVAS machines presented by the petitioners had already been dismissed as unreliable by the Supreme Court in a previous case.

APC’s lawyer, Emmanuel Okala, SAN, aligned with INEC’s position, dismissing the petition as speculative and unproven.

He argued that out of over 4,000 polling units in Edo State, the petitioners only called five polling unit agents as witnesses, which he deemed insignificant.

Similarly, Gov. Okpebholo’s counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, described the petition as an “academic exercise,” asserting that the documents tendered by the PDP—including Forms EC25B and EC40A—were “dumped in court” without proper demonstration of their relevance.

Reacting, Ogbeide Ifaluyi-Isibor, a chieftain of the PDP, has expressed satisfaction with the proceedings, stating that the petitioners are confident in their case.

Speaking after the tribunal’s final hearing, Ifaluyi-Isibor noted that the testimonies of witnesses aligned with the PDP’s claims, particularly concerning allegations of over-voting and incorrect collation of results in several polling units.

He reiterated that INEC had failed to adhere to its own guidelines, a key contention in the petition.

“The petitioners are pleased with the proceedings of the court so far. Our counsel effectively demonstrated that testimonies given by witnesses were in consonance with our prayers,” he said.

He emphasised that the number of witnesses presented does not determine the strength of an election petition, citing Supreme Court precedents that place greater weight on the substance of evidence rather than the volume of testimonies.

“We are contesting results in 756 polling units out of over 4,000 in the state. Our arguments before the tribunal were clear, and we believe that we have sufficiently substantiated our claims,” he added.

He said with judgment now awaited, the PDP remains hopeful that the tribunal’s ruling would be in their favour.

Ifaluyi-Isibor expressing optimism that the tribunal secretary would soon announce the date for the much-anticipated verdict.

Also reacting, Former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, commenting on the proceedings, stated, “It is the duty of the petitioner to prove their allegations beyond doubt.

“I am satisfied with how the hearing went, but only the tribunal can determine the outcome.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the PDP governorship candidate, was present in court to witness the final adoption of written addresses, but declined reaction.
