Makinde issues 7-day ultimatum for clearance of shanties around public schools

Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has issued a directive for the removal of shanties and commercial centers built around public schools in the state within seven days.

The governor gave the directive Tuesday, during a series of midnight inspections conducted across public schools in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Makinde expressed concern about the presence of these shanties surrounding schools in the state, saying such encroachments do not align with the state’s image and its education system’s standards.

He said: “The entrance is almost blocked by people who have their shops very close to the entrance of the school, which is not conducive for learning.

“So, we have gone round and what we are saying is that if you have anything attached to the fence of a school, you must remove it.

“We are going to give them about a week to remove those things. They should clear them so that when our children come back to school, we will know they are coming into an environment conducive to learning.

“Also, we have taken the opportunity to look at the situation with solid waste management. You can see most medians have become dumpsites but this has to stop.

“Where we have single carriage roads, you don’t see people dump their waste by the roadside. How come they have made the medians the dumpster?

“So, we will, again, go back to the drawing board because something is not obviously working with the architecture that we have in place.

In the same vein, the governor reassured residents that the prevalent practice of indiscriminate waste disposal along roadways would soon become a thing of the past, adding that plans are underway to overhaul the state’s waste management system.

We are working to look into what has to be done next to have the kind of environment that we really want to be proud of,” Makinde said.

The governor was in company of the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade; his counterpart in the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola; and the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of Oyo State, Barr. Abiodun Aikomo.

Oyo State’s budget performance is at 75 per cent – Makinde

    By Adewale Owoade

Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says the state’s 2023 budget performance is already at 75 per cent and should exceed 80 per cent by the end of the year.

Makinde gave his administration a pass mark while speaking at the Stakeholders’ Consultative and Engagement Meeting on 2024 Budget, held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

He maintained that his administration would continue the tradition of engaging with residents of the state in the making of the state’s annual budget, noting that this would help the government to serve the people better.

He urged residents to take the engagement meetings, which would be held across the seven zones of the state, seriously as inputs from the meetings would be captured in the budget.

“It is not just a yearly ritual; it is an exercise that is extremely important. We are not coming around for this exercise just for the fun of it.

“The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning said we are at 75 per cent performance and before the end of the year, we will surely go beyond 80 per cent; I believe this is a pass mark.

“Thankfully, the people of Oyo State gave us an opportunity to serve them further. So, we will continue to hold this stakeholders’ engagement under my watch for another three years.

“So, we must let our people know that this is not a jamboree. It is an avenue for our people to let us know what they want us to do for them,” he said.

The governor equally advocated for better synergy between the state and the local governments so they can serve the interests of the people better.

He said that the creativity of his government had ensured the construction of Oyo-Iseyin Road, a federal road, and the rebuilding of Akesan Market, Sasha Market and the Iseyin City Hall, which were local government projects.

Some of the issues raised by stakeholders at the event were the recruitment of teachers into primary schools and the completion of 351 primary health centres.

The governor assured that his administration would address all the issues in the next budget.

Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Prof Musibau Babatunde, said the state government had been using the stakeholders’ meetings to influence its budget since 2019.

“So what we have been doing is all about people and I believe that with this particular one that we are trying to do, we are also going to get it right and move Oyo State forward,” he said.

In separate goodwill messages, the Director-General of DAWN Commission, Mr Seye Oyeleye; Chairman of the House Committee on Budget, Public Accounts, Finance and Appropriation, Hon Sunkanmi Babalola; and representative of Ibadan Main LGs Chairmen, Alhaji Ramoni Adepoju, commended the government for the budget initiative. • We won’t enforce anyone to adopt our religious traditions, El-Zakzaky says

We won’t enforce anyone to adopt our religious traditions, El-Zakzaky says

The Leader of the Islamic Movement, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky (H), has said that the group would not enforce anyone from adopting their own religious traditions and belief.

El-Zakzay made the remark on Tuesday in a statement signed by Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara on behalf of the Islamic group in Abuja.

The statement, titled: “Arbaeen Commemoration: Why We Trek,” said that the Muslims, across the world, identify with the family members of the Holy Prophet(S) through the Arbaeen trek, and in answer to the call and cause of Imam Husain (AS) in Karbala.

“Today, not only in Nigeria or other places, but in Karbala, this Arbaeen commemoration has become the largest human gathering on earth with over 25 million people in attendance from various parts of the globe.

“Our trek on foot here in Nigeria is just another way of saying had it been there is a safe passage to Karbala from here, we would have marched to Karbala to pay homage to Imam Husain (AS) on this auspicious day.

“However, we are aware of the antagonism shown to us by some people because of this Arbaeen commemoration by trekking.

“We will like to echo what our leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky(H), has been saying on many occasions in answer to our critics.

“He always said: ‘Those who oppose the trek should have come and asked us why we do what we do, and not to pass judgment on us over what they do not know.

“‘If you don’t like what we are doing, then keep your mouth shut, it is our legs we use to trek with, not yours.

“‘If you don’t like the black attire we wear, we put it on our bodies, not yours.

“‘We will never force you to trek or wear black clothes, until we do that keep your mouth shut,” Mainasara said, quoting El-Zakzaky.

According to him, im the absence of the savages Nigerian security agents who always attack us for no reason other than to please their foreign masters, last year’s Arbaeen trek ended oeacefully without recording casualties and no complain from the other highway users.

“Nobody should be afraid of our Arbaeen trek. Love for Imam Husain(as) is not the exclusive right of Muslims only, right from the gruesome attack on the Imam at Karbala, but for all those who love justice and fight against oppression in all ages, ours inclusive.

“That is why we once again welcome our Christian brothers in humanity who have chosen on their own free will to trek with us today.

“This is not the first time they have identified themselves with Imam Husain(AS), they have done it before and we thankfully welcome them.

“This is the handiwork of Allah. No one forced us to embark on the trek, it is out of free will and love for the Family of the Prophet(S). We pray that Allah thwart and frustrate the evil plans of the oppressors against us as he has done it in the past,” he said

According to Mainasara, the fortieth day (Arbaeen) commemoration after the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the Grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), is commemorated annually by the Islamic movement, following a symbolic trek by millions of people from across the country.

“This year’s Arba’een symbolic trek started since Sunday in Pambegua, while that of Kano, Funtua, Malumfshi and Kaduna holds yesterday Monday and ended Peacefully.

“The commemoration continues today here around Abuja and is to be concluded tomorrow God willing. Thousands of people marched from New Nyanya in Mararaba, Abuja-Keffi express way and also in Suleja.

“The purpose of the symbolic trek is to recall and experience the trial and tribulation faced by the Household of the Holy Prophet (AS), chained and dragged in a very hot and dry desert, barefoot from Karbala in Iraq to Damascus in Syria after the killing of Imam Husain 61 years after Hijra.

” It was a period of anger and anguish at the perpetrators of injustice not just in the plain of Karbala but the world over,” he said. (Flowerbudnews)

JUST IN: NNPP expels Kwankwaso over alleged anti-party activities

A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party under the leadership of Major Agbo has expelled the presidential candidate of the party, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, over his alleged anti-party activities and misappropriation of party campaign funds.

Kwankwaso’s expulsion was announced in a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday by the NNPP factional National Publicity Secretary, Abdulsalam Abdulrasaq.

The development is coming barely three days after the factional leaders vowed to probe the former Kano governor and some of his loyalists over alleged misappropriation of over N1bn, generated from the sale of nomination forms.

Abdulrasaq affirmed that the decision to expel Kwankwaso with immediate effect was taken after he failed to appear before the disciplinary panel to defend himself over the allegations of “gross anti-party activities and mismanagement of party campaign funds within five days.”

The spokesman, however, reiterated that his expulsion was done in line with the provisions of the party’s 2022 constitution as amended.

He said, “The NEC met in an emergency session on Friday, September 1, and resolved that following the refusal of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to appear before the disciplinary committee, which sat on Thursday, August 31, after being duly invited in writing, he is hereby, expelled from NNPP with immediate effect.

That the erstwhile presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso will be reported to appropriate quarters to answer questions on financial impropriety relating to mismanagement of public funds.”

Reacting, an ally of Kwankwaso and National Auditor of NNPP, Ladipo Johnson, frowned at the report, saying Agbo’s faction does not have the locus standi to dismiss the former governor.

“Expel who? These people are no longer our people. They are out of the party and cannot speak on behalf of the party. Let them form their own party or go to court. It is as simple as that. There are so many important things to worry about in this country.

“How can they expel Kwankwaso? Someone whose relationship with the National Working Committee is intact here at the national headquarters in Abuja? We will soon be having a press conference to address this matter,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu spoke as he joined the rail as its first passenger during its inaugural commercial operation, for the use of the masses in Lagos on Monday.

He acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for being the brain behind the achievement, by including the train in the master plan of the Lagos government.

The government said it had come to reality for Lagos residents to enjoy.

” So, we went to about five places within an hour to and fro; I must commend the working governor for this great project,” she said.

Speaking after a ride on the light rail, Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to the management of the Lagos State Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) for ensuring that safety and security of the train was properly managed throughout the journey.

He also commended the Lagos State Commissioner of Police as well as all the security agencies in Lagos for ensuring safety of lives and properties of the passengers while boarding the train.

He advised Lagos residents as well as students to obtain the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) Card and the Cowry Card, which had been integrated to board all the means of government transportation in Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu said that with the light rail, he, alongside other passengers, had been able to reach many places in Lagos and return in less than an hour.

He said that the multi-modal transportation had been fully integrated in Lagos with the commencement of the blue light rail.

The Senior Special Rail Design Engineer, LAMATA, Mr Abidemi Atobatele, said that all the terminals were covered by security men and Closed Circuit Television, assuring passengers of full security within the areas.

He said that the train was electrified and pleaded with the residents not to cross over the rail area, but to make use of the pedestrian bridges.

One of the passengers, Ahmed Farida, commended the Lagos State Government for completing the light rail project, saying it would ease movement across Lagos.

“With this train, there is no stress; we are able to move around. You can work with your time, and your mental health is intact now; gone are the days we complained of traffic and all of that.

” So, we went to about five places within an hour to and fro; I must commend the working governor for this great project,” she said.

She urged Lagos residents to support government in maintaining the light rail project.

Princess Mulikat Sanni, former, President, Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIoTA) urged Nigerians to ensure they maintain the light train project.

Sanni said that the commencement of the rail would create more job opportunities and add value to the economy of the state.

    The Managing Director, Lagos State
Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Mrs Abimbola Akinajo, had said ahead of the comnencement that with feasibility study, the train system would be conveying 175,000 passengers on daily basis.

She said that though the commercial operations would have begun in the first quarter of 2023, it was delayed to ensure that all modalities were in place.

”As you know, the first phase of the blue line was commissioned, the infrastructure completion was commissioned by Mr President (Former President, Muhammadu Buhari) in December.

”At the time, we had said to you we would start operations in March. Unfortunately, we did not, by the end of the first quarter, then it was by the end of the second quarter. Unfortunately, we had hiccups with power delivery.

”We are here to say that we are completely ready in terms of all operational infrastructure. The reason that we have been delayed is due to the fact that our power provision was delayed,” Akinajo had said.

The LAMATA boss said that the train service, which would run from Mile 2 to Marina, would run 12 trips on daily basis for a period of two weeks, and the service would gradually increase.

” We will be working according to a timetable. That timetable will be available on LAMATA’s website, that timetable will also be available at every station.

“When the train gets into any station, it will stop for no more than 90 seconds. So, you need to know, and this is it, for us to understand that it is a scheduled service,” she had said.

She said that the Blue Line Rail service had five stations which comprise Marina, National Theatre, Orile-Iganmu, Alaba, and Mile. (Flowerbudnews)

Strike: Federal workers back NLC, vow to shutdown all secretariats

ABUJA—AS the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, embarks on a two-day warning strike today, the Federal Workers Forum, FWF, has vowed to shutdown Federal Secretariats across the country.

“As federal workers, we are also badly affected by the economic crisis visited on Nigerians as a result of the hike in the pump price of petrol, all in the name of subsidy removal.

“We had earlier written to the federal government to adjust our wages automatically inline with the existing economic realities but that has fallen on deaf hears.

“It is over three months now that fuel subsidy had been removed and fuel has equally been increased twice by over 300% , with a price shift from ₦187 to over ₦620 but salaries have remained the same. Federal workers within this period have gone through excruciatingly tough times. It has been stories of mass suffering and life has been made almost meaningless to the federal workers.

“Everything has been nauseating and hunger is now a way of life among the federal workers. As a matter of fact, federal workers have been financially embarrassed as against the provisions of the general order of the federal civil service rules and regulations.

“Federal government workers are no slaves,we therefore query this pathetic situation and call on all federal workers to ensure that the two days warning strike is successful.

“We call on the federal workers to ensure that all federal government Secretariat across the federation is shut down during the strike period. Workers are to also ensure that every other government offices, departments and agencies are shut down nationwide.

We call on all industrial unions, organising federal workers to comply with the directives of the NLC.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is also called upon to ensure the success of this strike action

We urge the federal government to meet up with the demands of labour.

We demand also that government pay up all outstanding arrears of salaries, promotions, duty tour allowances (DTA) owed the federal workers and particular attention to the arrears of salaries of federal university workers in Nigeria.

“Henceforth, federal workers will no longer tolerate any oppression of federal workers anywhere and we shall not hesitate to join any workers group in solidarity strike when oppression is noticed; our attention here is drawn to the plight of our colleagues in the federal universities.

“We equally call on the NLC to pursue this struggle to a logical conclusion and stop this mass cheating of workers. The NLC must not disappoint Nigerians, the labour movement has our collective support.”
