  • I don’t want to die an ordinary death: Saheefa Jabbar Khattak

    ISLAMABAD:

Model-turned-actor Saheefa Jabbar Khattak has completely shut the industry down with her constant doses of unconventional and unique enigma. From carrying the pixie-cut hairstyle with panache to bagging ‘Best Emerging Talent’ trophies at the Lux Style and Hum Awards, she oozes strength in her fashion and acting assignments alike. As well as proving her mettle as a performer in both her serials; the romantic love-triangle, Teri Meri Kahaani alongside Azfar Rehman and Saboor Aly and the currently under-production, Betiopposite Fahad Mirza that highlights female infanticide.

Having stumbled upon modelling at her university in Lahore, Khattak walked the runway and was approached by a mutual friend for a shoot with then-budding designer Hamza Bokhari. However, her most memorable shoot remains with ace photographer Abdullah Haris for 9Lines, which became her first ever magazine cover. Evidently, there has been no looking back since. Talking to The Express Tribune, Khattak recalled her journey in the entertainment industry.

“I left my university three years ago to explore myself and follow my dreams. I wanted to figure out how things go for me on my own. I never had a godfather, no one in my family was in the industry and I didn’t have any contacts,” she chuckles. “But somehow, one thing led to another. Thankfully, I didn’t have to face any struggles either. I met good people and there was no turning back after that.”

The acceptance and recognition as a model kept Khattak rooted and she refuses to quit it for acting. “I think balancing acting and modelling is undoubtedly the most difficult task out there. Acting is an ongoing process and once you’ve taken something up, you can’t escape it for a good three to four months,” she adds. “You have no life after you start acting. I feel no actor should be married; it becomes very hard on you. There’s no privacy and anything can be sensationalised. But I think when people start getting to know you, there’s love pouring in and they look forward to what you’re doing next. It’s like addiction and there’s this adrenaline rush to it. In the end, it’s all worth it.”

Always known to be outspoken, Khattak admits to being misunderstood by the fraternity during her initial days. “What people expect from models is very different. I was very vocal about my opinions and a lot of senior models didn’t like that. They thought I was an attention-seeker but with time that they got to understand me,” she maintains. “My colleagues like Cybil (Chowdhry), Mehreen (Syed) and Nooray (Bhatti) eventually accepted me with open arms. I remember how they supported me when the whole controversy about me cutting my hair short began.” Khattak mentioned that she was judged for a lot of things when she first started off. “I had a lot of baby fat on me, I didn’t know how to walk and I was judged all the time.”

And in her pursuit of being frank, Khattak hosts thousands of inspired Instagram followers to an intellectually forward and eloquent handle. More often than not, her captions have been candid, raw and incredibly relatable. Hailing from a small town and settling into the Walled City, Khattak confesses to have always had the aspiration to evolve as a person. “I just don’t want to live an ordinary life. I don’t want to die an ordinary death; I really want to become somebody in life. My goals are very high, I’m inspired by the likes of Nelson Mandela and when I die, I want people to remember me and what I’ve said beyond being just some actor,” she says.

Although she’s adamant about social media being a temporary trend, what makes her use it as a rostrum? “I’m asked why be vocal, but why not? About 70,000 people look up to me, they want to hear me and if I can influence this huge number of people and teach them something good, why not?” she questions. “It’s not that I’m reading up on something or thinking about it, or I’ve heard someone talk about it when I put up a post. I can’t randomly put something up. And I’m not very regular at it either. It sometimes takes me weeks to post something on Instagram but if there’s an incident that’s happened to me and I’ve experienced it myself, I talk about it.”

Amidst the hoopla that surrounded Khattak’s sense of style and persona, she decided to tie the knot with long-time fiancé Khawaja Khizer earlier this year. “You know considering this local concept that a marriage is not between two people but families too, it’s very important that your immediate inlaws love you and accept you the way you are,”she notes. “I was lucky enough because after I got married, all my achievements have been because of Khizer. In my case, I did what I did because of his support.”

    PHOTO: PUBLICITY

She continues, “I didn’t tell anyone but in those years I did my major campaigns, I travelled internationally for shoots, I won two awards and I think all of that are proof that work doesn’t stop after you get married.” Speaking about the lowest phase in her career, she shares, “When my hair was cut, I was very down. I resigned from my contracts because the industry didn’t accept me that way. I didn’t get work for a couple of months and during that time, Khizer was with me. Without him, surviving would’ve been difficult.”

Beneath her fierce photoshoots and strong sense of individuality lies vulnerability. Not too long ago, the starlet opened up about her battle with depression on Instagram, claiming to have been suicidal. “I was undergoing depression before and I still am after marriage. My mother was very worried because to her, I had achieved a lot in life, I was earning and I had found the right man. But, I still wasn’t able to figure out why I was depressed,” Khattak mentions. “Out of nowhere, I did not want to talk to anyone or work or eat and I felt dead from the inside. But I had to overcome it and be strong for my parents, my husband, my brother and two best friends.”

Khattak feels it’s more important to make memories instead of chasing peace. “There are times when you’re uncertain and there’s something at the back of your head. I’ve just accepted that you can’t get everything in life. We run so much but that’s where we falter. We need to stop running to find peace. We need to make good memories and feel the air. Its high time we enjoy our lives the way they are and spread love.”

Ngige explains delay of NSITF board inauguration

The Minister of Labour and Employment has said that neither the ministers nor the board have the authority to award contracts in the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) or any other federal board.

Ngige said this in a statement signed by Mr Samuel Olowookere, the Director Press in the ministry on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said his attention had been drawn to media reports indicating that his office appropriated the powers of the board of NSITF in the award of contracts, hence the delay in inaugurating the board.

“Such a blatant falsehood is either on account of fertile ignorance or outright mischief or both by the originator as well as the peddlers.

“ It is, therefore, imperative that the provisions of the procurement Act 2010 which is clear and unambiguous on the process for the award of contracts be re-emphasised.

“For purpose of clarity, the Ministerial Tenders Board (MTB) for the award of contracts in any ministry is made up of the Permanent Secretaries as Chairman and his directors.

“In the parastatals, the Parastatals Tenders Board consists of Chief Executive Officer (Director-General or Managing Director) and his directors.

“It was, therefore, a ‘stunningly crass ignorance’ for anyone to think that part of the reasons for delaying the NSITF board inauguration was to enable the minister usurp the role of boards as regard award of contracts,’’.

Ngige advised those in authority to be versed in the basic issues that guide public governance and also be properly guided in their utterance, to avoid character assassination and misinformation of the public.

He said that the reason for the delay of the NSITF board inauguration was to enable the Administrative Panel of Inquiry probe the misappropriation of N48 billion out of which five billion naira disappeared in a day without vouchers.

The minister added that the panel had submitted its report while the committee implementing the report had begun work and would finish soon, paving way for the inauguration of the board.(NAN)

INEC plans house to house distribution of PVCs in Kogi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (NAN) says it will soon embark on house to house distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to owners in Kogi.

Prof. James Akpam, the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) announced this on Wednesday in Lokoja during meeting with leaders of political parties, civil society organisations, security chiefs, media and other groups.

He said that 293,340 PVCs remained uncollected in the state, saying that the move was to ensure that the cards got to the owners before the general elections.

Akpam said that distribution would cover the 248 wards in the state, adding that the itinerary for the distribution of the cards was being worked out by INEC and other stakeholders.

The REC revealed that 251,639 new voters were registered in the state from July 2017 to July 2018, noting that the newly registered persons included 129,643 females and 121,996 males.

He explained that the commission issued 59,627 PVCs to their owners and replaced 12,661 lost, damaged or defaced PVCs.

The commissioner said that the INEC office in Lokoja had taken delivery of printed 112,323 cards on behalf of newly registered voters, saying that only 18,887 of the cards were collected by their owners.

According to him, the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration will end on Aug. 7 until after the 2019 general election elections.

He, however, stated that the issuance of PVCs would continue until a week before the 2019 general elections.

He said that INEC staff would work extra hours, including weekends and holiday periods to cope with the anticipated surge in the number of eligible voters who would want to register.

On the forthcoming bye-election to fill the vacant Lokoja/Kogi Federal constituency, the REC said that the election would hold on Aug. 11, and that voting and accreditation of voters would hold simultaneously.

Those at the meeting were unanimous in their demand that INEC should not allow vote buying and should create level playing ground for contestants.

They also warned against excesses of security agents and demanded that officials and election materials should arrive early at polling stations on the election day. (NAN)

“It is good for everybody to know that you don’t compel people to share your opinion, you have to compare with others to know how they feel about it.

“Bariccading the residence of the Saraki and his invitation  by police  over Offa bank robbery  are direct attacks on democracy.

There are other ways of resolving political crisis without resulting to use of force.

“Security agencies are expected to be neutral and not faning ember of discord among political gladiators, the ruling party should learn to carry every member along,” he said.

The council boss reminded politicians that the nation belongs to everybody and not a section of people.

On the recent gale of defection by some National Legislators from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) to other parties especially, PDP, Brown said it would deepen democracy.

“It is healthy in democracy, you can see some move to APC and some to PDP and other parties.

“it is a welcome development, APC should learn to carry eve body along, it is very important.

” Nigeria belongs to everybody not a certain people, I really commend the Senate president and Speaker, House of Representatives for their leadership style, the way they went about it,” he said.

Also, on the recent launching of Nigeria Air, the LG Boss welcomed the development but expressed displeasure over alleged outsourcing of logo branding to foreign firm.

“I’m not against outsourcing but not what we can do at home.

“It pains my heart for me to wake up one day and see that even branding logo was outsourced to foreign firm at the expense of our young talented youths that can do better, that is capital flight.

“If the logo is being used for the Air Line, I will not fly the Air Line.

” I’m going to organise a logo branding competition among our talented youths, using Nigerian Air Logo to see which one will be better,” he said.

  • Face-off between Oshiohmole and Ngige to be resolved amicably, says Minister

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed says the on-going face-off between National Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole and Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige will be resolved amicably.

The minister gave the assurance when he fielded questions from State House correspondents after the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Comrade Adams Oshiohmole, had on July 23 threatened to expel the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, or any minister who failed to inaugurate members of board of parastatals under their supervision from the party.

However, Ngige, in a statement by the Director of Press, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Samuel Olowookere, said those that said he had not inaugurated the Board of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) because he was awarding contracts were ignorant of the Procurement Act.

The Minister of Information, who also spoke on Tuesday’s defection of some members of the National Assembly from the ruling APC to Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), said the issue was not discussed during the cabinet meeting.

He said that President Buhari had already stated that the defectors were at liberty to belong to any political party in line with democratic tenets.

He noted that the APC was in firm control at the National Assembly, in spite the defections at the two chambers of the Assembly.

“The governing party, the All Progressives Congress APC is still having the majority in both chambers of the National Assembly,’’ he said.

Mohammed also reminded Nigerians on the danger of spreading fake news.(NAN)

  • Bryan Adams opens up about alleged affair with Princess Diana

In the world of showbiz, nothing remains hidden – least of all, love. If the current hullabaloo over Priyanka Chopra’s alleged romance with Nick Jonas is anything to go by, one can safely assume that the media – and of course, fans – will go to great lengths to find out the truth about their favourite celebrities’ relationships, even if it means breaching their privacy.

And who could be a better example of celebrity life marred by intrusion than the late Princess Diana? It’s no breaking news that the British Royal was killed in a car crash while driving away from paparazzi in Paris back in 1997.

    PHOTO:DAILYMAIL

    PHOTO:DAILYMAIL

And even now, 21 years later, people have not given up on speculating about Diana’s private life; what drove a rift between she and husband Prince Charles; who the  troubled princess was actually in love with and why. The latest speculations pertain to rumours of a whirlwind affair with Grammy-winning singer Bryan Adams. But was it really an affair? It depends on who you ask.

Back in March, reports of the possible link-up arose after Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, on an episode of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here, reportedly said he used to sneak the Summer of 69 hit maker into Kensington Palace to see her, reported E! News.

Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra to reportedly get engaged next month

Bryan’s longtime partner, model Cecilie Thomsen, has also admitted to knowing he was having an affair with Diana back in 1996 and how it affected their own relationship. Not to mention, more than 10 years earlier, he released a song called Diana which was pegged to the Royal’s ill-fated marriage. The lyrics detailed how she drove the narrator “wild,” how she was the “queen” of Bryan’s dreams and asked what she was doing with a guy like Charles.

    PHOTO:DAILYMAIL

    PHOTO:DAILYMAIL

But Bryan still neither confirms nor denies the allegations. He recently appeared as a guest on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, wherein he, for once, addressed them and categorically insisted that he and Diana were just “very good friends,” reported DailyMail.

“There are many rumours that you and Princess Diana were once romantically involved. Her butler said that he used to sneak you into Kensington Palace. How would you characterise your relationship?” the host asked. To this, the Canadian rocker replied, “Great friends… And she didn’t sneak me in, I would just roll up.” When Andy further inquired if the duo had been “friends with benefits,” Bryan said, “She was just… we were good friends.”

Although the ‘Plead the Fifth’ round of Watch What Happens Liveallows a guest to refuse to answer one of three questions, the Lets Make a Night to Remember singer happily answered them all.

Now 58 years of age, Bryan has mostly retired from actively making music. But he is also a multi-award-winning photographer.

  • NASS Defection won’t affect Buhari’s re-election,says Yoruba Ronu

NASS Defection won’t affect Buhari’s re-election,says Yoruba Ronu

    Defection

    By Abolade Ogundimu

Abuja, July 24,2018(NAN) A socio-cultural group, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, says Tuesday’s defection of some members of the National Assembly from APC to other parties  will not  adversely affect  President Muhammadu Buhari’s bid for  re-election in 2019.

Mr Akin Malaolu, Secretary -General of the group made this known on Tuesday in a statement he signed in Abuja.

According to Malaolu, some political elements are making futile efforts to pressurise democracy.

“We are not sad over the political troubles which some reactionary political elements are putting Nigeria’s democracy into gloomy forebodings on account of war against corruption.

“They are not capable nor with the capacity to turn the table against APC in the 2019 elections.

“We hold on to these views mainly because Buhari was and still is the tree trunk that others leaned on to get into their seats at the National Assembly.

“Such characters’ decision to cross carpet, though unlawful, will not carry them far and given time they shall all become sober and remorseful soon,” the group said.

“Yoruba Ronu expected APC defectors’ constituencies to ask qualified questions for which they must provide their people with good answers.

“The people of Nigeria today, now know their enemies to include looters and purveyors of irrational consolations that dotted our landscape.

“This clearly has drawn a line between evil and good, which  shall herald us into a better and greater Nigeria of our dreams.

“One good thing that has stood for Buhari and his government is the respect for law and order with honesty to right the wrongs done to the helpless and hapless masses,” he said.

He called on Nigerians especially, those craving for progressive and people-oriented governance to keep faith in APC-led government.

Yoruba Ronu cautioned the Senate and House of Representatives against any attempt to impeach Buhari.

“We must, however, warn against forceful impeachment of the President, the consequences may be amazing in every nooks and crannies of the country.

“Anyone or group that pushes 20 million  people into general resentments caused by religious divisions and to the ethnic may not survive it, that is not our wish for Nigeria,” he said.

He said itself and Yoruba nation stood solidly behind APC despite unfair judgements on the government by reactionary forces.

“It shall be so into many elections to come. We are glad that the government of Buhari is making progress in the right direction for the teeming masses as his first choice”.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 13 APC senators defected to PDP while another one moved to African Democratic Congress(ADC).

Similarly, 37 APC members of House of Representatives left majorly for PDP, alleging lack of democracy within the APC. (NAN)

  • NAPTIP investigates alleged trafficking of Nigerian minors to Russia

National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)  has launched investigations into the alleged trafficking of Nigerian minors to Russia in the guise that they were football fans attending the 2018 World Cup.

The Director General of NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, made the disclosure to newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday.

Okah-Donli said the agency would leave no stone unturned to ensure that those behind the trafficking of  230 Nigerians, including minors, stranded in Russia after the tournament were fished out and prosecuted.

President Muhammadu Buhari on July 16 directed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, and his Aviation counterpart, Mr Hadi Sirika, to evacuate the Nigerians to Abuja immediately.

Following the directive, a chartered Ethiopian Airline flight on July 20 conveyed 155 stranded Nigerians back to Abuja.

The Federal Government also vowed to arrest and prosecute the travel agents who cancelled the return tickets of the 230 Nigerian football fans stranded after the World Cup.

The fans had alleged that their return tickets were cancelled abruptly by airline agents, resulting to their being stranded in Russia without any hope of returning home.

Okah-Donli  said although few minors were screened and given papers by NAPTIP for the tournament, the agency did not screen majority of minors who travelled as fans for the tournament.

“We wrote to the Nigeria Football Federation asking for the details of all those who went to Russia for the World Cup.

“Our investigations will be geared towards finding out sponsors of all minors involved who travelled without proper documentation with NAPTIP and the airlines that issued the tickets,” she said.

She said that sponsors, airlines, and travel agents who procured the visas would all be prosecuted when the investigations were concluded.

The director-general further said that the agency had  prosecuted 359 persons for trafficking since its   inception .

“Under my watch as DG in the last one year, NAPTIP has prosecuted 43 persons for trafficking.

“We have continued the rehabilitation of those rescued. Some of them are in the universities, some in secondary schools and others learning one trade or another they do desire.

“The fight against child trafficking cannot be won by government alone. It needs concerted and collective efforts of all Nigerians,” she said.

On the plans of the agency for the July 30 World Trafficking Day, the NAPTIP DG said that it planned to continue creating awareness on the menace of trafficking.

“”We will have walks and we have invited stakeholders to come join in creating the awareness that the Federal Government must be supported in this fight.

“I will also use the occasion to launch the two books I have written on child trafficking,” she added. (NAN)
