Wike working for Nigerians, not APC–PDP chieftain

    By Deborah Coker

National Vice-Chairman of  Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Orbih, says the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, is working for Nigerians and not for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orbih in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Saturday said having sought permission through the relevant organs of the party, PDP permitted Wike to serve in the President Bola Tinubu administration.

He said that in view of this, there should not be any issue with Wike working with the APC-led Federal Government.

“And I can tell you there is no record that the current acting national chairman and the members of the national working committee, or any of the organ wrote him in reply to his letter that he should not participate in this government.

“He wrote to the South-South Zonal executive. We had a meeting in Port Harcourt and unanimously we said it was a call to national service, and we gave him our nod.

“He wrote to the state chapter of his party and the response was positive; that he should take the appointment as a national call for service.

“He wrote to his ward and Local Government chapters of the party. There is no organ of the party that came out to say no, don’t accept this appointment.

“He wrote to the Governors Forum and I can tell you, that at the end of the first meeting held by the forum, a delegation of that body went to congratulate him in Abuja,” he said.

He noted that political parties must be careful how they treat their members.

“Now I have told you that his participation in this government is not an issue, except for those who are mischievous.

“When he was given an invitation to serve in this government, he wrote to every critical organ of the party, informing them that Mr President has invited him to be part of his government.

“I am also aware, that not too long ago, the members of the Board of Trustees met him in his official residence, and throughout that meeting, none of them raised this issue.”

“So, Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is not working for APC; he is working for the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

The PDP National Vice-Chairman also said that his relationship with the FCT minister and his friends in other political parties could not be defined by his politics.

“Let me make it abundantly clear here that my membership of PDP cannot determine those who are my friends and those who should be my enemies.

“If at my age, I now belong to a political party and the party tells me, this man cannot be your friend, then it is wrong.

“I have friends across board. I have friends in Labour Party, APC, and in many other parties, but that doesn’t affect my membership and commitment to the PDP.

“I want to say it very clearly, PDP cannot determine my friendship with Nyesom Wike, a very dependable, hard-working friend of mine, he added. (NAN/Flowerbudnews

IPMAN tasks filling stations on proactive fire safety measures

    By Flowerbudnews
The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has tasked filling station outlets on proactive fire safety measures meant to safeguard their premises from fire outbreaks and avoidable losses.

The Chairman of IPMAN, Enugu Depot Unit, Mr Chinedu Anyaso, gave the task on Sunday in Enugu while speaking on the need to check incidences of fire outbreaks in the oil and gas sector.

Anyaso, whose association covers independent petroleum marketers in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu, said that his unit had mandated each petroleum product outlet to have reeady-to-use fire extinguishers and buckets of sands before commencement of operation each day.

He said that each filling station “must also have a sticker indicating NO PHONE CALLS, PLEASE” and phone number or phone code of the nearest fire fighting/service station.

“We are also partnering with the Federal Fire Service to have a seminar to educate our members and their filling stations’ attendants on how to use and handle fire extinguishers.

“They will also learn how to ensure that the content of the fire extinguishers do not leak off from its containers due to poor handling and storage as well as know when a fire extinguisher expires.

“Our members will also be exposed on other things necessary to have and know to ensure that one is alert on any possible incident of fire within a filling station.

“For now, we only recorded a fire incident in one of the filling station outlets in the remote area in the state and it was caused by answering a phone call close to a pump nozzle dispensing fuel in a filling station in January, 2025,” he said.

According to him, that incident was regrettable: and members are clearly aware that incidences of fire in any filling station outlet leads to huge losses and it is not what anyone will wish to happen.

The chairman also called on its members to be sensitive about the atmospheric temperature before offloading products from petroleum trucks/tankers especially during hot weathers

“It should be dispensed in the morning hours or it should wait in the evening hours when the intensity of the sun and hot weather reduces,” he added.

Apart from covering independent petroleum marketers in Enugu, Anambra and Ebonyi; the IPMAN Enugu Depot Unit also comprises independent petroleum marketers in some parts of Abia, Imo, Kogi and Cross River States.

NUC Executive Secretary Lauds UniCal VC Over N2.1bn Projects

    Flowerbudnews

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Banku Obi, for her passion in completing projects which were abandoned and for initiating new ones.

Prof Ribadu who spoke while commissioning five projects estimated at N2.1 billion in the University, Saturday, during a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the institution and its 37th convocation, noted that Prof Obi had prudently utilized the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) to the amazement of all.

Projects commissioned included UniCal Hall of Fame which gulped N825,906,627; Faculty of Engineering Workshop – N161,197,224; Pharmacy Administrative Block – N481,007,717; Fire Service Station – N184,309,263 while N378,830,388 was spent on the Faculty of Education building.

it was gathered that while TETFUND significantly funded the projects, the management of the university also deployed huge amounts from its internally generated revenue to ensure the projects were completed before the expiration of the tenure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor in December this year.

“Some of these projects were abandoned for decades with others constructed within just seven months. This is a great achievement by the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Prof Florence Obi and her team.

“TETFUND as an intervention agency gives out grants to universities and other tertiary institutions. With prudent management we hope to see many massive structures under the watch of this administration,” he stated.

In her remarks, the VC explained that the construction of the Hall of Fame “was borne out of a desire to have a hall large enough to accommodate academic, professional, administrative and other related social functions.”

She described the Hall of Fame as “one storey framed structure incorporating multi-purpose hall with 1500 seating capacity, gallery, offices and conveniences,” and that the Pharmacy Administrative block is housing the Dean’s office, sub-dean offices and other offices.

On the need for a Fire Station in the campus, Prof Obi noted that it was to ensure “rapid response to fire emergencies and accidents within the university campus,” and that the Station is a bungalow incorporating offices, conveniences and parking space for fire trucks.”

Our reporter gathered that the contract for the gigantic two storey Faculty of Education building was awarded in 2017 but abandoned two years after work had commenced.

The current VC, who took over from the former VC Prof Zana Akpagu in 2020, is said to have initiated the process for the recommencement of the project in 2023 and got it completed this year.

“Thank you for being an exceptional Mother and mentor. We are blessed to have you”, the statement signed by the association’s Ameer concluded.

  • In Rivers State – A Republic of Anomaly Renews its Methods

In Rivers State – A Republic of Anomaly Renews its Methods

    By Chidi Anselm Odinkalu

IN Nigeria, history tends to repeat itself with unerring accuracy and in tiresome syntax. When he wrote his Report on the Amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria and Administration in 1919, Frederick Lugard described Nigeria as an “anomaly…. of a country with aggregate revenue practically equal to its needs, but divided into two by an arbitrary line of latitude.” While one portion was fiscally viable, he suggested, the other “was dependent on a grant paid by the British taxpayer.” Through the Amalgamation in 1914, Lugard created a Customs Union in which extraction could be sustained by administering mechanisms of fiscal compensation to smooth over these disparities.

From the get-go, the invention of Nigeria was about the exploitation of resources and property. Rivers State is at the centre of these resources. Towards this goal, the powers of government have historically been mobilised. More than 111 years after the Amalgamation, this raison d’être of the Nigerian estate remains resilient. It is both evident and explicit in the machinations that have now eventuated in the declaration of a state of emergency over Rivers State.

When he addressed the country on 18 March 2025 to proclaim a state of emergency in Rivers State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria’s president, claimed that he acted on “security reports made available to [him]” showing “disturbing incidents of vandalization of pipelines by some militant without the governor taking any action to curtail them.” Importantly, he had not bothered to speak to the State Governor to hear his own side of the story, nor did he indicate that any humans had been injured or killed.

Security reports in such situations are provided by the State Security Service (SSS). It is currently headed as Director-General by Oluwatosin Ajayi, whose stint as State Director of Security (SDS) in Rivers State coincided with the tenure as governor of Nyesom Wike, a principal belligerent in the political conflict in the State.

As a result, the President continued, “no good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state, which no doubt requires extraordinary measures to restore good governance, peace, order and security.”

These words were not new. When he moved the motion in the federal parliament on 29 May 1962 for the declaration of a state of emergency in the old Western Region, Prime Minister, Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa uttered the original version of the same sentence. After rendering his version of the events in the regional parliament in Ibadan the previous week, the Prime Minister declared: “No responsible Government of the Federation could allow an explosive situation such as that which now exists in Western Nigeria to continue without taking adequate measures to ensure that there is an early return to the Region of peace, order and good Government.”

Then in the Western Region, as today in Rivers State, there was a political dispute between a predecessor and his successor, both of them of the same party. The predecessor was Chief Obafemi Awolowo, leader of the Action Group, who had transitioned from the office of regional Premier to being leader of the Opposition in the federal parliament. His successor as Premier was Ladoke Akintola. Although both lawyers, these men had fundamental differences of both provenance and ideology. Awolowo was Ijebu from the south of Yoruba-land. Akintola, who grew up in Northern Nigeria, was from Ogbomosho in the north of Yoruba-land. Ideologically, Akintola’s politics tended towards conservative populism; Awolowo was more towards democratic socialism.

In May 1962, the National Executive Committee of the Action group resolved to request Akintola to resign as both deputy leader to Chief Awolowo in the party and as premier of the Western Region. Rival factions emerged in the party claiming a majority in the regional parliament. Akintola sought to have the parliament convened for the purpose of procuring a vote of confidence on his government. Both the regional governor and the Speaker of the parliament rebuffed his overtures. Instead, outside the parliament, some party officials led by Bola Ige, secured the signatures of a majority of elected members withdrawing support from Akintola’s administration.

The party presented these signatures to the Governor, Oba Adesoji Aderemi, then the Ooni of Ife who thereafter invited Alhaji Dauda Adegbenro to form a new government as regional Premier. Attempts to re-convene the regional parliament ended in fracas. As recalled by Chief Awolowo, “one Mr. Oke, a supporter of Chief Akintola, a Member from Ogbomosho, jumped on the desk and was running about on the desk and then lifted a chair and struck somebody on the head. That is how it started, and then thereafter one Mr. Ebubedike, the Member for Badagry, who lives in Ajeromi, took the Mace and then in an attempt to strike the Speaker with the Mace, the Mace struck the table and broke into two.”

On receiving notification of the governor’s decision removing him and designating Alhaji Adegbenro as regional premier on 21 May 1962, Akintola began proceedings at the High Court of the Western Region. The Chief Justice of the Region – they were called Chief Justice then – Samuel Okai Quashie-Idun, had acted as Chief Justice of Ghana under the government of Kwame Nkrumah. He headed to Nigeria after resigning from Ghana’s judiciary in 1958 over disagreements with the Nkrumah government in the first flush of post-colonial authoritarianism. In 1960, Quashie-Idun became Chief Justice of the Western Region in succession to Robert Yorke Hedges. As Chief Justice, he was said to enjoy the support and patronage of Premier Akintola.

The expectation of Akintola was reportedly that the Chief Justice would afford him expedited hearing and a favourable verdict, handing him under colour of law the boost he needed in this battle of his political life. Instead, Chief Justice Quashie-Idun decided to distil the legal issues and, rather than rule on them, transmitted those to the then Federal Supreme Court for decision. The case eventually travelled up to the Privy Council where Akintola lost the legal dispute. It is said that a disappointed Ladoke Akintola withdrew patronage from Quashie-Idun and their relationship never recovered. The following year, Quashie-Idun left the judiciary of the Western Region to East Africa, becoming the President of the East African Court of Appeal, where he died in 1966.

It is thought that Quashie-Idun tried, albeit unsuccessfully, to recover the relationship. In June 1963, he dismissed the action by Alhaji Adegbenro of the Action Group seeking to invalidate the appointment of Odeleye Fadahunsi as regional governor, and denied Adegbenro leave to appeal to the Federal Supreme Court.

The disagreement between Quashie-Idun and Akintola was in reality unbridgeable. As Chief Justice, he saw a legal dispute which deserved judicial dispassion. For Akintola, it was a political dispute in which the role of the judiciary was to serve as his instrument. In 1962, Quashie-Idun chose to stick with his judicial brief. Today in Nigeria, judges at the highest levels have chosen to discard judicial robes and purchase sides in the political dispute in Rivers State, becoming shamefully complicit in instrumentalizing the highest courts for a proverbial mess of political pottage.

When he addressed the country this past week, therefore, the President was not content with merely plagiarising Tafawa-Balewa; he found comfort in the partisanship of a wilful judiciary.

On 28th of February, the Supreme Court restrained the Central Bank from releasing the federal allocations of Rivers State until the State House of Assembly had passed a lawful budget. In his address declaring the state of emergency, the president said his newly appointed military administrator in Rivers State would not be able to make any laws. In effect, he could not pass a budget to implement the Supreme Court judgment.

Yet, the day after he was installed, the Central Bank released the withheld allocation to the military administrator. On the same day, the National Assembly approved the emergency proclamation on an unlikely voice vote after what was reported to be a splurge of money to sweeten that outcome. If the statutory allocation of Rivers State was used to purchase an emergency proclamation over the state, it is entirely in keeping with the project originated by Frederick Lugard to preserve Nigeria as a proposition in extractive anomaly.

Adeleke extends 24-hour curfew to Erin Osun over renewed communal clashes

    Flowerbudnews
Ademola Adeleke, Osun state governor has extended the 24-hour curfew imposed on Ifon and Ilobu communities to Erin Osun, following renewed communal clashes.

The conflict, which stems from a long-standing land dispute, escalated on Friday, leading to the burning of houses in Ifon and Ilobu, both in Orolu and Irepodun LGAs of the state.

In a statement on Saturday, Adeleke described the resurgence of violence in the three communities as “disturbing”.

“I have received with great sadness disturbing footage and security reports of a resurgence of the age-long communal clashes between Ifon, Ilobu, and now Erin Osun communities within the past 24 hours,” he wrote on X.

“Following extensive consultations with heads of security agencies working tirelessly to prevent further escalation, I hereby declare an immediate 24-hour curfew in the affected communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, effective immediately and until further notice.”

The governor noted that he has deployed a joint security operation involving the Nigerian army, the police, the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Amotekun, and other agencies for “round-the-clock surveillance”.

He sympathised with those affected by the clashes, assuring residents that perpetrators would be held accountable.

Adeleke also summoned an emergency stakeholders’ meeting with traditional rulers, including Peter Akinyooye, the Olufon of Ifon; Ashiru Olaniyan, the Olobu of Ilobu; and Yusuf Oyagbodun, the Elerin of Erin Osun, alongside other key figures, to find a lasting solution to the crisis.

“I urge all sons and daughters of these communities, alongside their traditional rulers, to embrace peace and coexist harmoniously,” he added.

“Any individual or group found inciting violence or aiding this unrest will be dealt with accordingly.”

The governor stressed the need for collective efforts to restore peace and prevent further destruction.

BREAKING: APC Threatens Kano Govt With State Of Emergency

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strong warning to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP)-led Kano State government following controversial remarks made by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam.

Abdulsalam had accused Professor Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje, wife of former Governor and current APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, of financial misconduct, specifically interfering with pension funds during her husband’s tenure.

In a widely circulated video seen by Newsmen as, the Deputy Governor alleged that pensioners were only paid after Professor Hafsat had taken her share of the funds.

Reacting to these allegations, APC’s Kano Publicity Secretary, Ahmad S. Aruwa, strongly condemned Abdulsalam’s statements during an interview with Express Radio.

He described the remarks as defamatory and a violation of Nigeria’s constitution.

Aruwa stated that the comments amounted to character assassination and went against constitutional principles.

He further warned that such statements could escalate tensions in Kano, potentially leading to a declaration of a state of emergency, similar to what was imposed in Rivers State by the Bola Tinubu administration.

Consult registered surveyors before buying land – NIS

    By Olatunde Ajayi

The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Oyo State chapter, has urged Nigerians to always consult a registered surveyor before buying land to avoid conflicts.

The Chairman of NIS, Surv. Lamidi Waheed, said this at a rally organised in commemoration of the 2025 Global Surveyors’ Day on Friday in Ibadan.

Global Surveyors’ Day is marked every March 21 to celebrate the contributions of surveyors and raise awareness about the profession.

The theme of the 2025 celebration is: “Shaping the New World on the Wisdom of Surveying.”

Surv. Waheed noted that only a surveyor could ascertain the status of a particular land, whether such land falls under the government acquisition or already purchased by someone which could lead to conflicts.

“It is important to engage surveyor before paying for a land so that necessary investigations will be conducted on such land to avoid being scammed,” he said.

He observed that one of the challenges facing the profession was the activities of land grabbers, especially while working on the site.

He noted that surveyors have legal protection that protects every legitimate member from being victimised by land grabbers while on the site.

“With this law, beating-up a surveyor on the site attracts 10 year imprisonment.

“The highest thing that a land grabber can do is to ask us leave the site and we’ll leave peacefully and report to our client, we strongly condemn any form of brutality of land grabbers against our members,” he said.

Surv. Olusoji Adeoye, the Oyo State Surveyors-General, called for more collaboration among the NIS, the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria and the office of the surveyor-general to achieve effective land administration in the state.

Adeoye lauded the administration of Gov. Seyi Makinde for creating enabling environment for surveyors to thrive in the state.

He noted that estates and various road construction projects embarked on by the governor had enhanced the services of surveyors in the state.

Earlier, Hon. William Akin-Funmilayo, the Oyo State Commissioner for Lands, Housing, Survey, and Urban Development, said contributions of surveyors could not be over emphasised considering the important role they place in settling land disputes.

Akin-Funmilayo charged the NIS members to prioritise integrity in the discharge of their duties by avoiding all forms of sharp practices.

He urged surveyors to let the fear of God and the interest of the people be their guiding principles, while rendering service to the public.

The programme also featured lectures on the importance of surveyors, road shows and awareness campaigns on land matters across major motor parks in Ibadan.
