Tariff hike: Court delivers judgment in MultiChoice suit against FCCPC May 8

    Flowerbudnews

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday, fixed May 8 for judgment in a suit filed by MultiChoice Nigeria Limited against the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

MultiChoice is seeking to stop the FCCPC from sanctioning it over its recent increase in the DStv and Gotv subscription.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date after counsel for the MultiChoice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, and FCCPC’s lawyer, Prof. J.E.O. Abugu, SAN, adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the suit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Justice Omotosho had, on March 12, restrained FCCPC from sanctioning the pay-Tv company until the hearing and determination of the substance suit
The judge gave the order after an ex-parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/379/2025 and moved by Onigbanjo to the effect.
NAN reports that the FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice Nigeria Ltd to provide explanations regarding the March 1 price review of its packages.
The commission directed the company’s chief executive officer to appear for an investigative hearing on Feb. 27, raising concerns over frequent price hikes, potential market dominance abuse and anti-competitive practices within the pay-TV industry.
The FCCPC also issued a stern warning, stating that failure to justify the price adjustment or comply with fair market principles would lead to regulatory sanctions.
However in the ex parte motion filed by MultiChoice’s legal team led by Onigbanjo, the company sought an order of interim injunction restraining the FCCPC and its officers from carrying out the threat against it, as communicated via a letter dated March 3, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.
It also sought an order restraining the commission and its officers from issuing any further directive or taking any steps capable of disrupting its business activities, pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.
“An order of interim injunction restraining the FCCPC, its agents, servants, or privies from sanctioning or penalising MultiChoice (the applicant) in any manner whatsoever in relation to its price increase pending the hearing and determination of the motion for an interlocutory injunction.”

A bill seeking to upgrade Lagos State’s 37 Development Area Councils to full-fledged local government areas has been approved by the House of Representatives. Once enacted, the total number of LGAs in the state will increase from 20 to 57.

The bill was passed on Wednesday as one of the 42 constitutional amendment bills and was sponsored by Rt Hon. James Abiodun Faleke, Hon. Babajimi Benson, and Hon. Enitan Dolapo Badru, alongside 19 other lawmakers.

Enugu: Igbo-Etiti council boss provides 12  operational vehicles to enhance efficiency

    By Flowerbudnews
The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr Eric Odo, has presented 12  operational vehicles to enhance operational and security efficiency in the council area.

Presenting the vehicles on Wednesday at the Council Headquarters in Ogbede, Odo said the gesture was in line with the local government’s commitment to enhance efficiency and promote the well-being of its residents.

The Chairman said that the vehicles comprised two Hilux jeeps and 10 Sienna cars, adding that the two Hilux jeeps would help security personnel to patrol the area effectively.

Among the two Hilux jeeps, one was donated to the Nigeria Police and another to the Nigerian Army operations in the council, while the 10 Sienna went to various departments and special monitoring committees within the council area.

According to Odo, this will make them to  urgently respond to any distress call in Igbo-Etiti, even as our administration is committed to providing a safe environment for business owners and investors to conduct their activities unhindered.

He vowed to ensure that Igbo-Etiti maintain its stance on zero insecurity, adding that the council would partner the state government to tackle the incidence of kidnapping and other criminal activities.

“We have declared the forests of Agu Ekwegbe, Agu Umunko, Agu Ukehe all the way to Agu Opi and Awhum,  no terrorist zone for kidnappers and criminals.

“In that regard, conscious efforts have been made by the state government in collaboration with the council to ensure the forests are properly manned and pinned down.

“And if we are to consolidate on that, it is important to support the security personnel to do their jobs.

“That informed the reason why we are providing the security vehicles to the Divisional Police Office in Ogbede to help them do their work well,” he said.

Odo said the council had provided the Forest Guard and the Neighbourhood Watch with various gadgets to enable them do their jobs better as at February, 2025.

“Due to the crisis that bedeviled Aku and Ikolo communities, we have made arrangements to have a standpoint of soldiers along that road,” Odo hinted.

The council boss revealed that every department in the council including Health, WASH, Education, Agriculture and others would get operational vehicles to enhance their efficiency, which he stressed was the core mandate of his administration.

“It is our desire to ensure 100 per cent effectiveness in the administration of Igbo-Etiti Local Government.

“This is the reason we have provided Sienna vehicles as operational vehicles to various departments, so that at any point when any of their services are needed, there should be no complaint of lack of mobility,” he said.

He cautioned against reckless use of the vehicles, warning that anyone who misused or damaged any of the vehicles would be held accountable.

BREAKING: Jubilation As FG Pays Corps Members N77,000 Monthly Allowance

The Federal Government has officially commenced payment of N77,000 monthly allowance to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

The announcement of a pay increase by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which earlier brought relief and excitement among corps members nationwide, was met with disappointment following delays in implementation of the new allowance.

For almost six months after the announcement in September 2024, serving corps members were paid the previous N33,000 allowance introduced in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Confirming the development to Tribune , a serving corps member in Kwara State, simply identified as Adepoju, said the scheme has commenced N77,000, describing the increase as “long overdue.”

He opined that the payment is possibly being disbursed in batches, noting that while some corps members had already received theirs, others were still anxiously waiting.

Also, Nigerians on social media, have begun reacting to the development which came following an assurance from the Minister of Youths that the federal government would pay backlog of the N77,000 allowance.

A Twitter user, @ToluDaniel10, expressed his thoughts, writing:

“NYSC is finally paying 77k to corps members . If you have this girl’s DM, go say a big thank you. I bet the government wouldn’t have listened to you if not for her.”

Another user, @fimlex2, wondered why the space was still quite compared to when the scheme failed, tweeting:
