CODE, partners promote reusable pads Menstration

    By Perpetua Onuegbu

Abuja, Aug. 8, 2025 (NAN) Connected Development (CODE) and partners have urged an end to menstrual stigma, calling it a natural occurrence that should not attract shame.

The group made the call on Friday during a media visit to Thrifty Slayer, a reusable pad production facility in Abuja.

Mr Hamzat Lawal, Founder of CODE, said menstruation should never be a source of embarrassment for women and girls.

“This is a natural occurrence for women and girls. I’m a father, a husband, and a brother. If we want women to achieve their desired goals in life, we must play our part.

“Society should not dictate what women should say or do on this matter. As men, advocates, allies and fathers, let us prioritise menstrual health.

“We need policies that enable civil society, development partners and the private sector to provide pads in public schools, markets and toilets, because periods sometimes come unexpectedly,” Lawal said.

He stressed that addressing menstrual hygiene would save men the cost of treating infections in their daughters or wives, while also promoting women’s economic empowerment through reusable pad production.

According to him, reusable pads offer environmental benefits by reducing waste from disposable products.

“Most disposable pads end up blocking drainages, especially during the rainy season.

“But now we have organisations collecting waste fabrics from tailors, sorting them, and using them to make reusable pads that can last three to four years,” he added.

Mrs Gbemi Elekula, Founder of HUMANx/Dream Homes, said her company produces quality clothing and uses part of the proceeds to fund reusable pad distribution in underserved communities.

She said 3,675 packs had been distributed across six communities in partnership with CODE and Thrifty Slayer.

“Our goal is to ensure no girl misses school and no woman misses work because of menstruation,” she said.

Elekula urged an end to the stigma surrounding menstruation.

“When you talk about food, you don’t whisper. So why whisper about menstruation?

“Women are created to bleed. Without it, there would be no reproduction and the world would shut down. We must break the walls of stigma,” she said.

Ms Honeybel Ajise, Manager of Thrifty Slayers, said the organisation is focused on ending menstrual poverty and empowering women and girls through training in sanitary pad production.

She expressed optimism that the partnership with CODE and HUMANx would restore dignity to women and girls during their periods and end the stigma attached to it.

OYRTMA’s Daily Enlightenment Programme Aims to Reform Traffic Offenders.

    By Adewale Owoade

The Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) has launched a daily enlightenment programme aimed at reducing road accidents and improving traffic safety in the state.

The initiative, announced by OYRTMA’s Chairman, Major Adekoya Adesagba (rtd), focuses on education rather than punishment, with the goal of reshaping driver behavior and preventing repeat offences.

The programme, which runs from Monday to Friday, educates traffic offenders on common violations such as running red lights and dangerous driving.

According to Adesagba, these offences have contributed significantly to road crashes, injuries, and fatalities in the state. Offenders are required to attend awareness sessions before facing the traffic tribunal.

The agency encouraged all motorists to obey traffic regulations and support ongoing efforts to make the roads safer for all users.

“Enlightenment is in different forms; post and pre. Most time we’ve done a lot of enlightenment through jingles and flyers.

“But this particular one is so important because we are bringing in offenders of different offences according to traffic rules and regulations.

“We find it worthy that it is not just about processing them to make payment or to fine, or to go through Judiciary process (Rule of Law Tribunal) but also it is very important to continue to enlighten them and to show them the dangers involving violations of traffic rules.

“That is why we establish this offender’s enlightenment center to enlighten offenders about dangers of violating traffic rules and regulations

‎ “It is very important to always obey traffic laws, because obedience is better than sacrifice, we value compliance than offenders paying fines.

‎ “We need to have attitudinal change toward all laws not just traffic laws alone,” Adesagba said.

Members of the Oyo State Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) and farmers from various local government areas have expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde for the timely distribution of farm inputs under the N-Cares program.

‎The YEAP members, who were sponsored by the state government for agribusiness training at CSS Farm in Nassarawa State, commended the governor’s commitment to farmers’ welfare.

The Director-General of Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande, explained that the 5th distribution of Oyo N-Cares farm inputs program is part of the Nigeria Community Action For Resilience And Economic Stimulus Result Area 2.

Dr. Akande who was on ground for monitoring and evaluation of the distribution exercise also sensitised the beneficiaries of the Inputs about the importance of the items given to them.

‎He noted that the governor’s initiative has already yielded results, with increased farm produces recorded in the state.

‎While speaking on behalf of the YEAP beneficiary,  Kolade Kehinde, YEAP Coordinator for Oyo East Local Government, expressed gratitude for the farm inputs and mentorship program.

‎He said, “Engr. Seyi Makinde a visionary leader, and he’s like a father to us,  he’s  someone who sees potentials even where others may not.

“We are truly grateful for the opportunity given to us, from the very first trip to Nassarawa up until this stage.

“Today, we’re being given farm inputs to boost our productivity and improve food production in Oyo State. We are indeed thankful.

‎”We are being given herbicides, seedlings, fertilizers, and other essential inputs. In addition, there’s a mentorship programme in place to guide us on how to apply these inputs effectively for maximum yield.”

‎Kehinde also reacted to the rumour that YEAP members have been abandoned after their training at Nassarawa farm.

‎ “I want people to disregard that rumour, the truth is, the governor is working with a clear process. No serious plan can be executed without structure.

“It’s possible that some people are misinformed or have unrealistic expectations. But to say we were abandoned or not taken care of is simply false.

‎”For instance, right now, we’ve just being contacted by FCMB to receive financial support from the Oyo State Government. They’ve visited our farms, interviewed us, and we’re expecting funding to support our startups.

“Tough I can’t say the exact amount, but I believe it will be substantial amount. The fact that they’ve taken the time to inspect our farms and provide mentorship gives me confidence. I trust our governor,” Kehinde said.

Earlier in his address, the executive chairman of Oyo East local government, Hon Peter Oluokun who was represented by the Secretary to the local government,  lauded the Governor over the Oyo N-Cares farm inputs distribution initiative aimed at supporting the vulnerable farmers across the state.

The chairman urged the beneficiaries of the farm Inputs distribution to make good use of the inputs given to them.

The distribution exercise was also carried out in Oyo East, Oyo West, Surulere, Atisbo, and Ogooluwa local government.

The executive chairmen of these local governments lauded Governor Makinde for the initiative and urged beneficiaries to make good use of the inputs.

The event was attended by traditional leaders, including Chief Adekunle Teslim Baale Olori, Chief Adeleke Basir Loogun Alaafin of Oyo, and Chief Mrs. Titilayo Odurinde Iyalode Agbe Oyo East, among others.

Some of the YEAP beneficiaries include Lasisi Taofeek, Tajudeen Sakirudeen, Kehinde Busari, and Olaleye Biodun, among others.

SAPZ to Unlock Vast Potential, Create Opportunities for Nigerians – VP Shettima

    By Adewale Owoade

Vice President Kashim Shettima, says the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) initiative is aimed at restoring dignity, unlocking vast potential and creating opportunities for Nigerians.

Shettima said this at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) in Ibadan.

Represented by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, the vice president emphasised that the initiative will provide local farmers access to advanced processing facilities, positioning investors to take advantage of the state’s agricultural potential.

“Today’s land breaking of agro industrial hub, under the Special Agricultural Processing Zone (SAPZ) programme at Ijaye Akinyele Local government area, marks a decisive stride in our collectively quest to build a resilient self-sufficient and prosperous Nigeria.

“The SAPZ initiative, is one of the corner stones of the renewed hope agenda, champion by our President, Bola Tinubu. A vision rooted in restoring Nigeria dignity, unlocking our vast potentials and creating opportunities for every citizen.

“It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to a future where hope is renewed through concrete action, strategic partnership and inclusive growth.

“This initiative is not just an infrastructural project, it is a bold declaration that Nigeria’s future lies in transforming our abundant agriculture resources into value added product that fuel industries, generate employment and uplift our farmers.

“Accordingly, we are expanding the development benefits of SAPZ across the 36 states in collaboration with African Development Bank, to onboard 27 more states, starting with10 states by 1st quarter of 2026, sequel to financing procedure between the Federal government and financing partners.

“Let us seize this opportunity with hope, purpose and confidence that the seeds we plant today will blossom into harvests of prosperity for Nigeria,” he said.

In his speech, the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, noted that the project is a fulfillment of his administration’s promise to revolutionize the agricultural sector for job creation and prosperity.

“This administration has identified six major farm settlements with three more in Ilora, Iresa Adu and Ipapo to be designed for the succeeding government.

“These hubs are not stand-alone structures, they are deliberately designed as interconnector anchors of our agro business ecosystem, they bring producers closer to the processors and link farms to market.

“They reflect our believe that agriculture is not just about food, it is about infrastructure, enterprise, and also about national relevant

“We are building a future where agriculture feeds not just homes, but industries, where it doesn’t just sustain families but entire economy, and this why this project is very important.

“We cannot build a resilient economy if we neglect this type of sector that employs the most people, uses the most land, and offers the greatest potential for inclusive growth.

“We cannot talk about national food security without regional hub like this one pulling their weight,” Makinde said

Also, the President of the African Development Bank Dr Akinwumi Adesina, lauded the project and expressed optimism that it will be a success.

Various stakeholders, including the IITA Director-General, Dr Simeon Ehui and Oyo State Agribusiness Director-General, Dr Debo Akande, praised the Makinde-led administration for reducing infrastructural deficits and promoting agricultural development.

The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including a former military Governor, Oladayo Popoola, Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Economy, Wale Edun.

Also in attendance are the National and State Lawmakers, Oyo State Labour leaders, Oyo state functionaries, religious and traditional leaders, among others. (NAN)

“This is what inclusive governance looks like. These inputs are not handouts, they are investments in the future of food security.” He said.

The distribution train also reached Iwere Ile in Iwajowa Local Government, where over 100 farmers received 50kg SSP fertilizer, soybean herbicide, NoduMax legume inoculant for soybeans, and 10kg soybean seeds each.

‎The event was supervised by the Iwajowa Local Government Chairman, Hon. Abiodun Oyewunmi Muritala, who was represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adeola Seyi.

‎In Itesiwaju LGA, the distribution was held at Otu, where it was overseen by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Ayangade Peter Ayantayo, who represented the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Ojo Monsuru Olayemi.

Hon. Ayantayo praised the initiative, saying, “This programme is a direct investment in our people. It shows that government can work for everyone, not just the privileged. We are grateful for this timely intervention.”

High-profile beneficiaries in the area included the Oniro of Otu, His Royal Highness, Oba Sunday Adepoju, and Chief Julius Ayandele Ayanwunmi.

‎Speaking on behalf of traditional leaders, Oba Adepoju applauded the state government’s grassroots engagement, “For the government to remember us here in the rural communities shows that we are not forgotten. This is the kind of responsive leadership we prayed for.”

One of the beneficiaries, Alabi Saminu, a cassava farmer, said.

‎“We were almost giving up because fertilizer and herbicides are now beyond the reach of poor farmers like us. But today, we received help without stress or middlemen. Governor Makinde has shown that he understands our struggles.”

Pastor Olayiwola, Chairman of the Farmers Association in Ibarapa North, also remarked, “This is the first time in years that our people are receiving government support directly. We are not just receiving farm inputs, we are receiving encouragement to keep feeding the state.”

Ajayi Olakunle, a maize farmer, described the intervention as timely.

He said, “When I heard about this programme, I didn’t believe it would reach us. But here I am today with fertilizer and seeds in my hands. It’s not just support, it’s a show of genuine concern.”

Another farmer, Segun Ojebola, added, “For years, we’ve heard about government programmes that never get to the real farmers. But this is different. This support got to us directly, no politics, no middlemen.”

The Chairman of the Farmers’ Association in Ibarapa Central, Adeleke Azeez, added:

“We farmers are the backbone of this state’s food supply. But today, Governor Makinde has shown that he sees us. With these inputs, many of our members will return to their farms with renewed hope.”

Okegbenle Mofoyofolu, a representative of a women-led cooperative, said:

Many of us are single mothers and widows. This support is nothing short of a miracle. The fact that we were included means someone is truly listening to rural voices.”

Among the beneficiaries were Moriamo Yekini and Akintunde Yusuf, who both expressed deep gratitude for the assistance that came at a critical time in the farming season.

Moriamo Yekini, a widow and vegetable farmer, said, “I never thought I would benefit from a government programme like this. With these inputs, I can expand my farm and take better care of my children. This is a huge blessing.”

Akintunde Yusuf, a young farmer from Iwere Ile, added, “This support proves that farming is not a forgotten profession. With the rising cost of everything, this is the boost I needed to keep going. I’m grateful to OYSADA and Governor Makinde.”

The programme has brought hope and relief to farmers in the region, enabling them to continue farming despite the challenges posed by the economic hardship.

The distribution exercise is part of the state government’s efforts to enhance food production and mitigate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal on smallholder farmers.

Nurses at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have joined a nationwide strike called by the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) due to unresolved issues with the Federal Government.

The strike, which began on July 29, will end on Aug. 5 with the hope that government will meet their demands.

However, if their demands aren’t met, the nurses have threatened to issue a 21-day ultimatum and potentially escalate to an indefinite strike.

Their key demands include; Immediate Gazetting and implementation of the 2016 Nurses Scheme of Service to guide their profession.

Speaking with newsmen after a closed-door meeting at UCH, the Chairperson of NANNM UCH chapter, Funmilola Faminu, said the decision to fully comply with the national directive was unanimous.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment had earlier convened a meeting with the association, but talks ended in a deadlock, prompting the industrial action now affecting public hospitals across the country. (NAN)

  • BPP, NASENI sign MoU to promote local manufacturing, economic growth

BPP, NASENI sign MoU to promote local manufacturing, economic growth

Flowerbud News/ The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) on the implementation of Nigeria’s First Policy.

Dr Adebowale Adedokun, Director-General, BPP, during the signing in Abuja on Monday, said the partnership would promote local manufacturing, technology, innovation and economic growth in Nigeria.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)  reports that Nigeria’s First Policy promotes the use of local content and indigenous solutions to address national challenges.

Adedokun said the MoU aimed to create a structured bridge between production and procurement, prioritising locally made solutions in public service delivery, which would promote value for money in public procurement.

“Today, we are not just signing an agreement. We are building a pipeline from Nigerian innovation to national transformation.

“The MoU we sign today aims to align our policies with our priorities. It gives practical force to the Nigeria First Policy.

“NASENI’s innovations, from tractors to tablets, from surveillance drones to solar backup systems, will now be actively prioritised in the procurement plans of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies(MDAs).

“We are institutionalising a framework that makes local options not just preferable, but the default option before all others.”

He emphasised that the partnership was not an act of protectionism but an act of patriotism grounded in performance, as NASENI had invested in quality assurance with its products certified by Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and NAFDAC.

The D-G said the role of BPP was to ensure that standards were rewarded with access and that MDAs no longer needed to look outside when the best was being made in Nigeria.

He said the bureau was backing its commitment with NASENI with reform actions.

Adedokun said the BPP would integrate NASENI’s catalogue into the Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO), making NASENI’s offerings visible, verifiable, and measurable across all MDAs.

“ Between January and June 2025 alone, NOCOPO’s enhanced price intelligence helped Nigeria save over N173 billion equivalent to 155 million Dollars, and 1.7 million Euros.

“These are not just savings on paper. They are savings that free up resources for more schools, hospitals, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises.”

He added that the BPP and NASENI had set up a Technical Working Committee to synchronise production timelines with procurement cycles, which would track outcomes, identify bottlenecks, and ensure continuous improvement.

Adedokun commended NASENI for its efforts in putting Nigerian-made innovation on the map while calling on other MDAs to prioritise their products.

“I call on other sectors beyond NASENI to also come up with their own strategy for implementing Nigeria first. NASENI has led. I expect others to follow.

“To citizens, I invite you to track these procurements on NOCOPO. Your vigilance ensures our accountability.

“We have to really realise that today’s event is such that it can change our local industries, the small and medium-scale enterprises. It can change how women and youths are viewed in terms of industrialisation.”

In his response,  Mr Khalil Halilu, CEO,  Executive Vice-Chairman/CEO of NASENI, said the MoU was expected to attract more investments into the country and promote local manufacturing.

Halilu said the agreement would provide priority patronage to companies that partner with NASENI.

“ The MoU further strengthens our efforts, pushing  the Nigerian first policy, and we look forward to assembling more locally made items as well as promoting more industrialisation in the country.”

He noted that NASENI had received no fewer than  900 applications from companies to partner with them in the past one and a half years, because of its rebranding and new partnerships.

“This has resulted in the development of no fewer than 50 market-ready products, and we have a showroom on the Kubwa Expressway which will be showcased at our unveiling event soon.”

Halilu also emphasised the importance of protecting local industries and promoting local manufacturing to prevent Nigeria from becoming a dumping ground for imported goods.

He said the agency was working on building the biggest renewable park in the region in Keffi,  and had taken a portion of Abuja Industrial Park, and Abuja Technology Village to build electronics, electronic vehicles, etc.

Halilu stated that the agency had successfully attracted technology transfer and investment into the country.

He added that the agency’s policies were gender-friendly and inclusive, with women and youth forming part of its workforce.

  • PDP mortgaged our future not APC – ex-DG VON Okechukwu

PDP mortgaged our future not APC – ex-DG VON Okechukwu

    By

The former Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu, has said that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) should be held liable for mortgaging the future of Nigeria and not the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okechukwu, a foundation member of the APC, said this while answering questions from newsmen in Enugu on Monday on the allegations of African Democratic Congress (ADC) on “fiscal vandalism” on APC and President Bola Tinubu.

It would be recalled that the ADC had on Sunday accused President Tinubu’s administration of “fiscal vandalism”, following the National Assembly’s approval of £21 billion in foreign loans.

The party had said that the new wave of borrowing would drive Nigeria’s public debt beyond N200 trillion before the end of the year, with no corresponding development or economic revival to justify it.

Okechukwu said: “My candid position is that the leadership of the ADC are the true vandals who really mortgaged Nigeria today and tomorrow via their less than transparent privatisation programme.

“Because electricity is the bedrock of economic development, Nigerians have not slept since the day they auctioned NEPA/PHCN/Mambilla under all manner of conspiracy theories.

“One challenges ADC, if they are truly transparent to release the House of Representatives report on the $16 billion fiscal vandalism on electricity value chain under their watch – dubbed Ndudi Elumelu 2009 Report.”

The former director-general noted that just as ADC vandalised NEPA/PHCN/Mambilla, our economic substructure; they also vandalised the superstructure of our sister political party – the PDP’s unity rotation convention in 2023.

Okechukwu said that instead of joining fellow patriots to reposition the dislocated PDP, they hurriedly took refuge in the ADC.

He said, “Thinking that hauling stones will make Nigerians to forget the Manitoba and other less than transparent transactions which led to prohibitive electricity Tarrif and stymied huge investment like Aluminum Smelter, Ajaokuta etc.”

He adviced that the President should resist borrowing for recurrent expenditures or flimsy projects, if there is any, but borrow for critical infrastructure to enhance manufacturers productivity.

“For me we should resist borrowing for recurrent expenditure or flimsy, if there is any, rather the implementation of the Orasonye Report and urgent cutting down of unnecessary expenditures.

“Albeit, one will support President Tinubu to borrow about $50 billions to overhaul the entire electricity value chain, a bedrock of economic resorgimento,” he said.

Okechukwu advised the President that instead of borrowing $3 billion to rehabilitate narrow gauge of Eastern Corridor Railways at the moment, he should borrow commensurate higher amount for standard gauge railways.

He said that the President should borrow to establish one deep sea port in the Niger Delta to stimulate economic growth.

  • Recent 45% sudden surge in federal revenue reflects Tinubu’s bold reforms, fiscal wizardry – TMSG

Recent 45% sudden surge in federal revenue reflects Tinubu’s bold reforms, fiscal wizardry – TMSG

Flowerbud News/ The Tinubu Media Support Group (TMSG) has attributed the quantum leap in federally generated revenue from N2.942trillion in May to N4.232 trillion in June this year to the triumph of Tinubunomics, a euphemism for the financial engineering skill and flagship economic policies of President Bola Tinubu”s administration.

‎In a statement signed by its Chairman, Emeka Nwankpa, and Secretary, Dapo Okubanjo, the group said that it had translated into steady savings as well as an average monthly FAAC disbursement of well over one trillion naira to all three tiers of government.

‎It said: “Since the beginning of the year, federally generated revenue had consistently hovered above N2 trillion naira but we were startled to see a 45% increase in total gross revenue to N4.232 trillion in June 2025. This is the highest ever revenue generated by the country.

‎”We not only welcome this quantum leap in revenue but also see the development as the culmination of the financial engineering by the President Bola Tinubu administration in the wake of the introduction of its flagship economic policies of fuel subsidy removal and harmonisation of the foreign exchange windows.

‎”It is also an affirmation that the country has firmly moved away from low daily crude production to a higher alignment with the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) daily crude production quota of 1.5million barrels per day.

‎”In fact, publicly available data show that the country’s daily average production in June was 1.697m bpd, comprising both crude oil of 1.505m bpd and condensate of 191,572 bpd.

‎”We are also aware that only recently Nigeria’s oil rig count increased to 46 from 31 in January 2025, an indication of a rapidly improving investment atmosphere in the oil sector as a result of reforms introduced in that sector as well as improved security.

‎”To better understand how well the country has fared in the last two years on President Tinubu’s watch, we invite Nigerians to note that total gross revenue for the same period in 2023 was N1,959 trillion while that of June 2024 was N2,483.8 trillion.

‎”So there is no gainsaying that the reforms introduced by the administration are yielding good financial dividends for the country.”

‎The group added that this development has led to consistently high FAAC allocations to all tiers of government.

‎”As a result of improved gross revenue earnings, funds available for disbursement from the federation accounts have grown exponentially.

‎”From the N786.8 billion that was shared among the three tiers of government in May 2023, monthly FAAC allocations have grown to a high of N1.818 trillion in June 2025, while the country was buoyant enough to set aside N2.251 trillion for transfers, refunds, interventions, and savings.

‎”We dare say this is unprecedented and a far cry from the eras when the managers of the country’s finances dipped into reserves to augment distributable revenue to all tiers of government.

‎”So it did not come as a surprise to many Nigerians that the majority of states are reducing their exposures to debt in the last two years.

‎”We are looking forward to a situation where higher allocations to state and local governments begin to reflect in the well-being of the people,” it added.

‎TMSG urged Nigerians to demand more from the subnationals now that they are consistently getting increased federal allocations.
