Church, NAN partner on peace, unity in Nigeria

The Christ Evangelical and Life Intervention Fellowship says it will partner with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to sustain peace and unity in Nigeria.

Pastor Yohanna Buru, General Overseer of the Church, made this known while on a courtesy visit to NAN Kaduna Zonal Office on Wednesday.

According to him, the visit was necessary to sustain the agency’s cordial relationship in ensuring peace and unity in Nigeria.

Buru said NAN’s wide coverage and positive reports have led to peace award for him as the first Nigerian to win the ‘United Nations World Interfaith Harmony Week’.

Buru said, ” I am a major beneficiary of NAN, i will continue to partner with the agency for peace and unity in Nigeria.”

He said that the visit was also to extend congratulations to the new Zonal Manager of the agency, Bashir Rabe-Mani, to wish him success and divine guidance throughout his tenure.

Buru emphasized that the visit was not his first encounter with the manager and that he looked forward to promoting peace and unity across the nation.

The clergy said, ” It is a well deserved position due to commitment, dedication and sacrifice that qualified you, we have worked together in Sokoto; we shall sustain the relationship .”

In his response, Rabe-Mani, commended Buru for the visit while assuring sustained support and partnership towards bolstering peace and unity in Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.

“It is part of the agency’s mandate to partner with all religious organisations in ensuring lasting peace and unity in Nigeria,” he added.

  • Alleged P&ID fraud: EFCC withdraws charge against ex-Lagos AG, Shasore

Alleged P&ID fraud: EFCC withdraws charge against ex-Lagos AG, Shasore

Abuja: The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, withdrew the money laundering charge preferred against Mr Olasupo Shasore, SAN, following a directive by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minster of Justice, Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.
EFCC’s Counsel, Bala Sanga, informed Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court, Abuja, upon resumed hearing that his office notified him as prosecuting lawyer that there was a letter from the AGF requesting the anti-graft agency to withdraw the charge.

Sanga, who said the letter would be brought to court, prayed the court to stand down the matter to await its delivery and the judge granted the request.

When the court reconvened, the prosecution presented copies of the letter to the judge and the defence counsel, Chief Olawale Akoni, SAN.
“Based on the AGF’s directive, we apply to withdraw the case,” Sanga told the court.

Akoni, who did not object to the oral application, said: “We will humbly be asking the defendant to be discharged.”

Justice Ekwo, consequently, ordered the withdrawal of the charge and discharged Shasore, who was former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State.
He said: “Upon being shown a letter from the AGF dated 23rd of November and the application by the prosecution counsel that the matter be withdrawn, the charge is hereby withdrawn and the defendant discharged.”
The AGF’s letter sighted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) and personally signed by Mr Fagbemi, which was addressed to the Executive Chairman of EFCC, was captioned: “RE: Review of All Civil and Criminal Proceedings Between Process and Industrial Developments Ltd (P&ID) and Federal Republic of Nigeria (FRN).”
The cases were listed as: charge number: FHC/L/447C/2022 – FRN Vs. Olasupo Shasore, SAN; charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/386/2022 – FRN Vs. Middlesex Investments Ltd and charge number: ID/19657C/2022 – FRN Vs. Olasupo Shasore, SAN.
The letter with reference number: DPPA/OLASUPO/345/23 informed the EFCC “that the above charges were being reviewed in the light of recent developments in Process & Industrial Developments Limited vs. The Federal Republic of Nigeria (CL-2018-000182) and The Federal Republic of Nigeria vs. Process & Industrial Developments Limited (CL-2019-000752).
“Consequently, you are hereby directed, pursuant to the provisions of Sections 105(1) & 108(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, to withdraw the said charges with immediate effect and revert on compliance promptly.”
NAN reports that Shasore was standing trial in Abuja and Lagos State on alleged money laundering offences.
The ex-Lagos A-G was, on November 4, 2022, arraigned on a 14-count money laundering charge before Justice Ekwo of Abuja court.
In the charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/386/22 filed on Aug. 17, 2022, Middlesex Investments Ltd and Shasore were 1st and 2nd defendants respectively.
Shasore was alleged to be a director and a signatory to the company’s Guaranty Trust Bank account number: 0005659394.
The former commissioner, however, pleaded not guilty to the offences alleged to have been committed along with the company and was granted bail in terms of the administrative bail earlier granted him by the EFCC.
On Oct. 20, 2022, Shasore was arraigned before Chukwujekwu Aneke, judge of an Ikeja Special Offences Court, on a two-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering.
Hours later, the former A-G was arraigned before Mojisola Dada, judge of a Federal High Court in Lagos on a four-count charge of alleged money laundering.
NAN had, on Oct. 23, reported that a Business and Property Court in London presided over by Justice Robin Knowles of the Commercial Courts of England and Wales had quashed the 11 billion dollars awarded against Nigeria in a case filed by P&ID.
Judge Knowles held that the award was obtained by fraud and that what had happened in the case was contrary to public policy.
The court also declared that it did not find any merit in the charges of bribery levelled against Shasore, who represented Nigeria in the arbitration.

The Federal Government had, in the case marked: CL-2019-000752, sought to overturn $6.6 billion arbitration awarded in favour of P&ID in 2017.

The award had continued to accrue interest since then, rising to approximately $11 billion before the judgment.(NAN)(www.nannnews.ng) / Flowerbudnews

  • Tinubu’s new Nigeria and citizens responsibility

Tinubu’s new Nigeria and citizens responsibility

A news analysis by Ismail Abdulaziz,News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Abuja:  On assumption of office, it was clear that the new administration of President Bola Tinubu intends to rejig the nation’s ailing economy to make it robust enough to engender development and growth of the country.

Few months into the four year tenure of the administration, a lot have been initiated to drive the economy towards growth in order to extricate Nigerians from the economic woes of the past and give them a new life line for a prosperous future.

Tinubu came in with a pledge to make Nigeria great through a five point-agenda anchored on rule of law, security, and remodeling of the economy to provide jobs, address extreme poverty and ensure food security.

His target also involves giving prominence to women and youths in governance, and championing a credit culture to discourage corruption while strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of the various anti-corruption agencies.

On economy, the president was emphatic that his target is having year-on-year higher GDP growth and significant reduction in unemployment.

These, he said, would be attained through instituting budgetary reforms to stimulate the economy without engendering inflation.

‘’Second, industrial policy will utilize the full range of fiscal measures to promote domestic manufacturing and lessen import dependency.

‘’Third, electricity will become more accessible and affordable to businesses and homes alike,” by doubling power generation and transmission and improving distribution networks while states will be encouraged to develop local power sources.

The administration has also made a significant commitment to local and foreign investors that the government would review all complaints about multiple taxation and various anti-investment inhibitions.

‘’We shall ensure that investors and foreign businesses repatriate their hard earned dividends and profits home,” the President said.

The measures taken so far, seems to have started generating dividend.

On November 24, 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew to 2.54 per cent year-on-year in real terms in the third quarter of 2023, higher than the 2.25 per cent recorded in 2022.

In its 2023 Q3 Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report, the NBS said GDP grew slightly by 0.03 per cent, higher than the 2.51 per cent reported in the second quarter of 2023

It explained that the GDP growth was driven mainly by the services sector, which recorded a growth of 3.99 per cent and contributed 52.70 per cent to the aggregate national GDP growth.

Experts are of the opinion that the various efforts of Tinubu to woo genuine foreign and local investors will in the long run accelerate the administration’s quest to rejig and revamp the economy.

However, to ensure that the tenacity of the President pays off, institutional structures must be strengthened to drive governance policies to success.

No doubt, democracy thrives on information, constructive criticism and encouragement, so that government policies and programmes are assessed dispassionately and adjusted where necessary to meet set targets.

In this respect, government and private media organisations should be made to key into the national vision as enunciated by the administration.

This is necessary for them to appropriately provide the right information and content to galvanise the support of citizens and friends of Nigeria, and encourage everyone to contribute towards the successful delivery of the government agenda.

The recent appointments of new heads of federal government media organisations is the first step towards reinvigorating the information machinery of government

However, the most important aspects are providing the organisations the necessary funding and working tools to compete effectively in the fast changing information space.

This is important for the public media organisations to work in synergy with various government organs to properly inform the populace and make them understand what the government is doing to make life better and easier for all.

Thus, the ability of the media organisations to function to the satisfaction of the government and the people depends largely on the support they receive in terms of funding and conducive working environment.

There are still questions as to whether the government in taking steps to deliver the economic renewable it promised, or working hard enough to ease the current hardship brought about by the removal of fuel subsidy, sanitising the civil service, and addressing rising food inflation.

Even the Economic Intelligence Unit in its 2024 Outlook on Nigerian economy, expressed such fears, demanding for urgent action to prevent more Nigerians from falling into extreme poverty.

It is however encouraging that the president seems to be aware of these challenges and is making the right decisions to overcome the difficulties.

    qq
For a start, Tinubu has designed a performance bond for cabinet members with clear timelines for the delivery of government programmes and policies.

This is an important step that will offer citizens the opportunity to assess the performance of political appointees, and invariably, the government.l

At a recent retreat for cabinet members, Tinubu was emphatic that they were not elected to bear titles.

“The responsibility we bear are not just titles, they are the hope and aspiration of millions of Nigerians.

“You might be ready to forget about the rest of the world but as a Nigerian, let’s go out there, let’s bond together and make sure our country fully recovers. Let me remind you that you are not here to make excuses, neither am I,’’ he told the ministers.

With this commitment from the president, what is required of Nigerians is to put the administration on its toes, support it as citizens desirous of seeing the emergence of a new Nigeria, and work collectively to provide solutions to accelerate growth and development in Nigeria.

Nigeria and Nigerians deserve a better life and the Tinubu administration must not be derailed, like other administrations before it; it should be supported by all patriotic Nigerians to provide sustainable solutions to existing challenges. (Flowerbudnews)

Worker dies, two injured at Lagos building site

A 40-year-old man simply identified as Chinedu has been confirmed dead while two sustained varying degrees of injury as bags of cement collapsed on the three construction workers in a site at Usman Mogaji Street, Ajangbadi in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident happened at about 1:00 am on Monday.

It was also learnt that the three construction workers were sleeping inside the site when the bags of cement collapsed on them.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said he found cement bags on the three workers after hearing a frightening noise, adding that they were hurt.

I only heard a noise and it sounded like somebody crying for help. Immediately my friends and I heard the noise, we ran to check what was going on and we found bags of cement on three people.

We immediately rushed them to the hospital because the amount of cement that fell on them was a lot. I am sure they would have had injuries because carrying cement is very heavy let alone plenty cement bags falling on a human being.”

She added that effort was put in place to evacuate the corpse to the mortuary while the family members would be contacted.

Although I think they wanted to take his body to the mortuary and we tried to reach the family members about the situation.” she concluded.

“We need to chart a new course in the energy sector for a clean energy transition aided by artificial intelligence,” he said.

According to him, the event seeks to promote further business corporation between Nigeria-Angola and other African countries as a follow up to the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.

“We have been advancing the course of peace for more than 13 years now, and we have come to the conclusion that we need to do more than talking.

According to him, Angola is a major player in the global oil and gas industry and now well ahead of Nigeria.

“The event is an independent initiative in support of the AfCFTA drive to contribute to establishing regional value chains in Africa, enabling investment and job creation in the continent.

“It will feature presentations, exhibitions, dinners, golf tournament and a host of others,” he said.

“And we had a registration desk for those who might want to attend.

“Several people used the opportunity to register for the summit,” he said.

  • Reframing Tinubu’s Development Agenda Through Diplomacy

Reframing Tinubu’s Development Agenda Through Diplomacy

    By Stanley Nkwocha

In his 80-page Renewed Hope policy document released in the build-up to the 2023 general election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu listed some action plans. Top on his priority lists were national security, economy, agriculture, power, oil and gas, transportation and education. He said his objective was to foster a new society based on shared prosperity, tolerance, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to handling each citizen with equal respect and due regard.
And to ensure his campaign promises unfold into a pleasant reality, the president, at the maiden Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in August this year, unveiled a more vivid eight-point agenda to turn around the economy and make life comfortable for all Nigerians. Encapsulating the action plans in the 8-point agenda, he relisted the eight priority areas to include food security, ending poverty, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, improving security, rule of law, fighting corruption and improving the playing field on which people, particularly companies operate.
Since assuming office, President Tinubu has unleashed a flurry of economic diplomacy stemming from his notion that the prestige of any country among the comity of nations is proportionally dependent on its social and economic realities, which explains why governments around the world embark on missions to create an enabling environment to attract both local and foreign investments.
President Tinubu started firing from all cylinders the moment he and VP Shettima took their oath of office. To begin with, he embarked on ambitious plans of warming Nigeria’s way back to global relevance. Beyond the avalanche of domestic reforms being implemented to create an investment-friendly Nigeria, the president and his deputy have also assumed the position of Nigeria’s marketers-in-chief.
At the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) held from September 20-23, 2023 where he delivered his maiden address to the General Assembly on September 20, President Tinubu shot straight, telling the world that “the greatest economy is Nigeria with immense investment opportunities,”. He noted that Africa is not a problem to be avoided or pitied, he said, “Africa is nothing less than the key to the world’s future”.
That the President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima synergy is redefining and setting the pace in president/vice president harmony is to say the least in the mildest way. This smooth working relationship between them stems from Shettima’s unwavering and natural loyalty to his boss. The Tinubu government is only five months old in office, but within this period, VP Shettima and his boss have struck a balance never seen in this part of the globe.
The cumulative effects of this synergy are the positive issues arising from the presidential global engagements that have continued to dominate headlines and possibly for some time to come. Some of the high-hanging fruits, which have resonated well with Nigerians, came in handy by way of the recent bumper achievements recorded by the Nigerian delegation under the leadership of President Tinubu to the 3rd Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum in China, as well as the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue, World Food Prize 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa, United States of America.
In China where significant milestones in the nation’s journey towards economic prosperity were made, VP Shettima joined world leaders from over 130 countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America at the forum to deliberate on the theme, “High-quality Belt and Road Cooperation: Together for Common Development and Prosperity.” The Vice President availed Nigeria of the platform provided by the forum to woo investors for more developmental projects at high-powered bilateral meetings with other world leaders. He also promoted Nigeria’s trade and investment relations in line with the economic development agenda of the Tinubu administration.
One of the most significant breakthroughs was China’s renewed commitment to the completion of the long-awaited Lagos – Ibadan, Abuja-Kano and Port-Harcourt-Maiduguri railway projects, as well as the Lagos-Ibadan railway. This, economic experts believe, will not only revolutionise the country’s transportation sector but also foster regional connectivity and economic integration. Moreover, the commitments in power generation and digital economy mark crucial steps towards addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges and advancing technological innovations, crucial for sustaining long-term growth.
The signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) valued at $2 billion, alongside the $4 billion worth of letters of intent, reflects the substantial inflow of foreign direct investment into key sectors such as technology, automotive and infrastructure, underlining the growing confidence of international partners in Nigeria’s economic potential. These agreements, which include partnerships with the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) and various Chinese corporations, are poised to drive job creation, technological advancements and overall economic diversification.
Furthermore, the agreement on the construction of the Lekki Deep Blue Seaport contract is a testament to the enduring appeal of Nigeria as a premier investment destination. Such projects not only bolster Nigeria’s status as a regional economic powerhouse but also solidify its position as an industrial hub, attracting diverse industries and promoting sustainable economic growth.
The collaborations with renowned Chinese companies, encompassing fields such as technology, construction, and communications underscore the multifaceted nature of the strengthened Nigeria-China relationship, ushering in an era of enhanced technical capabilities, infrastructure development and knowledge transfer.
At the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue, World Food Prize 2023, in Des Moines, Iowa, United States, it was another bumper harvest, as Vice President Shettima wooed investors from the United States and other countries. He said Nigeria remains the best place to invest given its 70 million hectares of underutilised arable land, which he said is 75% of the country’s total land mass. He told them that under President Tinubu’s watch, Nigeria has since demonstrated that the Agrifood sector is a top priority.

An instant gain from the VP’s engagement in that country was the resolve by an American company, John Deere, to invest in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, first by setting up a tractor assembly plant in Nigeria. The decision was taken during a meeting between VP Shettima and top officials of the firm led by its Vice President on Production Systems, Mr Jason Brantley. The meeting was facilitated by the Chairman of Flour Mills of Nigeria, Mr John Coumantaros, a long-time investor in Nigeria.
Just as one would think it was already enough takeaways, the African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development announced at the Norman Borlaug International Dialogue that they have voted a whopping $1 billion to further deliver on the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs) in 24 states of Nigeria. President of the African Development Bank Group, Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, said the decision to pump such huge funds was to develop SAPZs in 13 countries.
President Tinubu’s administration’s strategic efforts to create a conducive environment for business and investment have undoubtedly paved the way for these remarkable achievements. The emphasis on fostering mutual international cooperation and the removal of bureaucratic bottlenecks demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to building robust partnerships that prioritise respect, mutual benefit and non-interference. These are essential pillars for sustainable global relations.
Just as VP Shettima told the investors in the United States that Nigeria is committed to transforming agriculture as a pathway to tackling insecurity and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers, President Tinubu is, indeed, taking the courageous decision to revamp Nigeria’s economy. There may be painful reforms as certain opposition elements are trying to project them before the citizens, but they are necessary to ensure the long-term sustainability of the nation’s economy.
Tony Blair, a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, once said, “Anyone can say yes, but the hallmark of leadership is the ability to say no when you should.” This statement underscores the inevitability of courageous decisions in leadership, and it is a quality that President Tinubu has demonstrated in unmistakable terms.
On the other hand, Vice President Shettima is another leader who embodies the qualities of loyalty, courage and vision. In a country where tribalism and regionalism are often used to divide and conquer, Shettima remains a staunch believer in the unity and progress of Nigeria.
The VP has consistently demonstrated his commitment to a united Nigeria where every citizen is treated equally, regardless of their tribe or ethnicity. His unwavering loyalty to the people of Nigeria is evident in his selfless service and dedication to the betterment of the country. He is a man who puts the needs of the nation above his own personal gains, always tirelessly working towards the progress and development of the nation.
The achievements at the Forum in China and the Dialogue in the United States are not just a cause for celebration but also a testament to the unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s infrastructural development. The substantial investments and agreements signed during these fora signal a promising future for Nigeria, indicating the emergence of new opportunities and partnerships that would undoubtedly propel the nation towards greater heights.
As the nation progresses on this path of growth and innovation, it is imperative to sustain this momentum, ensuring that the benefits of these partnerships are effectively harnessed for the holistic advancement of Nigeria and its people as the power of strategic alliances and international cooperation in fostering sustainable development and economic prosperity cannot be overemphasised.

  • Jonathan and Naval Yacht: Ignore Mischief Makers, says Niboro

Jonathan and Naval Yacht: Ignore Mischief Makers, says Niboro

    Fmr. Presidential Spokesman, Ima Niboro

    By Biola Lawal

Abuja (Flowerbudnews): Former Presidential Spokesman, Ima Niboro, has urged Nigerians to disregard a rehashed 2010 report detailing how former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan rejected the presidential yacht from the navy, and directed them to use the funds to refurbish their aging fleet.

In a statement, Niboro pointed out that this was a Daily Trust news report published in 2010, a clear 13 years ago, and wondered why it’s been dredged up so many years after, and being angled as a comparison between Jonathan and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He stated that the issue of the presidential yacht is probably as old as the navy itself. The issue came up under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He rejected it and reportedly directed the navy to convert it to a special purpose gun boat.

Under President Jonathan, it came up again, and the president rejected it and directed the navy to seek a virement from the National Assembly and use the N3.3 billion budget to rebuild its fleet.

Like Obasanjo and Jonathan, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also roundly rejected the so called presidential yacht, and has distanced himself and his administration from it.

Niboro said there was no basis for comparison between Tinubu and Jonathan on this issue because both men, like Obasanjo before them, rejected the presidential yacht.

“I think it is time to ask the people at the navy to desist from this issue of presidential yacht which somehow has come up to embarrass successive presidents.

Yesterday it was Jonathan, and I recall how much effort we had to put in to distance the president from it 13 years ago. Today, the president’s media team is once again working frenetically to distance the current president from it.

Someone at the navy needs to take a look at this issue of Presidential Yachts that no president wants, but which rears up to embarrass successive administrations,” Niboro said. (Flowerbudnews)

  • Passport applicants allege massive extortion by NIS officials in Abuja

    By Ibironke Ariyo

Some Nigerians who applied for international passports have accused personnel of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Abuja passport office, of massive extortion.

The passport applicants said in spite of recent directive of the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo to the immigration authorities to sanitise the system, nothing much has changed.

The applicants who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), lamented that they were made to pay various sums of money by NIS officials before getting the travel document.

They also alleged that the electronic passport application system has been compromised, forcing those who followed due process with no alternative than to “settle” NIS officials in order to get their passports on time.

Some of them further alleged that even when the passport was ready, they were made to pay another N5,000 before collection.

An applicant, Mr Ahmed Isa, a civil servant, said that he had been to the passport office over 10 times and was yet to get his passport.

“I have been coming here since September to get a passport because I want to travel out of the country.

“First, they said the fee is N35,500 but now they have jacked it to N55, 500. This is for a passport with a duration of five years.

“Everybody is telling you to pay this and that and the place is chaotic. The whole thing is frustrating,” Isa said.

Another applicant, Mohammed Umar, said that he came for the re-issuing of his passport which had expired but was told by a NIS official to pay additional “compliance fee”.

“When I asked them what the compliance fee is for, the man pushed me aside and walked away.

“All I have noticed here is that many of the officials are unruly and behaving as if they are not accountable to anyone,” Umar said.

Another applicant who sought for anonymity, said she applied for passport renewal online in August 2022 and was still waiting.

“Every time I go to the immigration office to track its progress, officials kept telling me to contact the person helping me.

“It has been frustrating and depressing. Everyone expects and believe I should have a certain someone who is helping me.

“When I told them I did it online, I got the ‘ohh’ look and then the term ‘self-service’ follows me everywhere I turn to for help,” she added.

Another passport applicant, Blessing Ibiyemi, told NAN that she missed out on a scholarship abroad because of her inability to get her passport processed in spite of following due process.

“I applied for passport in April and I just got my passport now in October after paying an extra N40,000 to process it.

“The first time I came to their office, I told them I paid online, they gave me a chair to sit and I was there for hours.

“When I asked them why I am still here, they told me to contact the officer helping me, I was shocked because I paid online and I didn’t expect any officer to be helping me.

“The NIS has not shown true commitment to wanting to tackle this menace,” Ibiyemi said.

A female applicant said under condition of anonymity that she missed a very important training abroad in spite of paying fully for the passport.

”I paid N116,000 for a 32-page passport booklet. At every stage of the process the personnel ask for money.

”I paid N70,000 initially and I was told to pay another N36,000 for adding another name, my marital name, then another N10,000 for approval of the passport, and at the collection point, I paid another N20,000.

”When I demanded for receipt the personnel helping me became angry,” she said.

Another victim, Mr Alarape Ogunmuyiwa, said that he was initially charged N80,000 for renewal of his passport.

Ogunmuyiwa added that he was later made to pay extra N20,000, because the official in charge told him that the expired passport was “defaced”.

“I am yet to get my booklet. They kept saying no booklets. The funny part is that, the officer in charge of my passport is not even picking my calls.

“Now, I have paid N100,000 to get my passport and yet I can’t access it, this is frustrating and I can’t take this anymore,” he said.

A journalist, Dennis Abraham, whose passport expired in August said after paying N120,000 for a 10-year validity passport, he was initially told to pay additional N25,000 and later another N15,000 to correct a mistake on his date of birth.

Abraham said that the immigration officer he was dealing with, said though NIMCI had effected correction to the date, the change is yet to reflect in the immigration portal.

“I’m still waiting after paying N160,000 to renew my passport. Hopefully it will be ready soon,” he added.

An immigration official who pleaded anonymity told NAN that the system has been highly compromised, adding that those who applied for passport online “will take forever to get their passports”.

“What obtains now is to pay any officer who will fast-track the process for you and you’ll get your passport within the space of two weeks after application,” he said.

Another official told NAN that the extortion of passport applicants by fellow immigration officers is real.

He described the situation as not only embarrassing, but also a huge threat to national security.

“It is a menace, we may not know the full implication today until a little later when the negative impact of this issue begins to manifest in our national security negatively.

“It has national security implications for Nigeria. We are talking about obtaining a Nigerian passport.

“Now, if we the officials involved are only after money, it means anybody can come into Nigeria through any of our porous borders, play the necessary game, and obtain anything that makes and certifies him as a Nigerian citizen,” he lamented.

The officer, who advised that drastic measures must be taken to curb the menace, urged passport applicants to resist any attempt to force them into offering bribe for passport.

He said that it was important for victims of the extortion to report to higher authorities.

However, the Service Public Relations Officer, Dr Adedotun Aridegbe, dismissed the allegations as untrue, claiming that some passport applicants fabricate stories to dent the image of NIS.

According to him, it is not possible for applicants to pay more than the official amount for passport booklets.

“All these things are not true. It’s unrealistic. When I investigated some of these allegations, some applicants just formulate stories to tarnish our good image.

“We have officers that work round the clock including weekends and even run shifts to produce these passports.

“There is a task force set up by the Comptroller General, Mrs Caroline Adepoju to checkmate any illicit activities going on in the passport offices,” he claimed.

Aridegbe said instead of the “unfounded allegations”, Passport Control Offciers across the nation should be commended for being able to clear backlogs of passport applications as directed recently by the minister.

He said both the Minister and the Comptroller General went through sleepless nights to ensure that the backlogs were cleared.

The NIS spokesman however said disciplinary action would be taken against any officer found wanting. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)/ Flowerbudnews

Katsina: Relieving pains of insecurity via community-driven approach

By Zubairu Idris, News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)

Katsina:  In what looked like a scene from an action movie, under the cover of darkness, gunmen stormed Government Boys Science Secondary School in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State in December 2020.

Before security agencies would respond to distress calls, the bandits had whisked away no fewer than 300 of the students from their hostel. They spent one week in captivity.

Earlier this month, gunmen kidnapped five students of Federal University, Dutsin-Ma. Their captors are still demanding ransom as at the time of filing this report.

The above scenarios reflect the security challenge Kastina State has faced in recent years. In addition to abductions, there is also the challenge banditry, cattle rustling, and armed robbery, among others.

This has continued to raise concern not only among the residents of affected communities, but also to the government and other stakeholders.

The consequences of the problem on the socio-economic lives of the people in the 34 Local Government Areas of the state have been enormous, ranging from poverty, hunger, school drop-out, among others.

For instance, some farmers have abandoned farming activities. The implications of this need not be explained.

The most affected Local Governments Areas are: Batsari, Danmusa, Jibiya, Kankara, Safana, Faskari, Sabuwa and Dandume.

In these areas, many of the residents have migrated to where they consider safe even when such areas lack basic amenities. The vulnerable—widows the poor, widows, orphans, children and the aged being the worst hit.

Some residents of such communities have lamented that bandits move freely with weapons in their areas, adding that sometimes they enter markets to extort the residents.

“Sometimes they kidnap young women who are unable to migrate and rape some of them.

“In some places, they also impose taxes on the residents before allowing them to cultivate crops,” residents who pleaded for anonymity told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Another resident, who gave his name as Mallam Abdullahi, said: “sometimes, residents sleep on roof tops. Sometimes we sleep in the bush and return in the morning in our bid to escape from terrorists attack.

“As I am speaking with you, the only people left in our area are widows, children, the aged and the physically challenged persons as all able-bodied men have fled the community.

To change this narrative, Gov. Dikko Radda, said during his inauguration on May 29, 2023, that the task of his administration would be “providing peace and prosperity for the people”.

“The insecurity issue will be paramount for this administration, and we will deploy all available resources to end banditry and criminality across the state.

“We will also engage communities in this fight to ensure that security is sustained.

“To those affected by banditry and other forms of insecurity, I assure you that my administration will do its best to rebuild your lives.

“We will also focus on your mental well-being and provide special support to women and girls who have endured unimaginable pain,” the governor said.

As demonstration of vow Radda, on Oct. 10, 2023, inaugurated Katsina Community Security Watch Corps (KCSWC), to complement security agencies in the ongoing fight against the menace.

Radda recalled that during his electioneering campaign, he traversed the 361 wards in the state and witnessed the devastating effects of insecurity on several communities.

“People have been denigrated to poor living conditions, immense psychological trauma, and a complete demolition of socio-economic development,” he said

He said in line with his campaign promises security has been the topmost priority of his administration and has invested vast resources to ensure sustainability in the fight against the criminality.

“This should come as no surprise to anyone as 22 out of 34 local governments in Katsina face severe security challenges,” he said.

Radda, therefore, said the introduction of the Community Watch Corps (KCSWC) illustrated his administration’s proactive approach to those security challenges.

“By leveraging localised knowledge and fostering trust, we are not merely addressing symptoms, but targeting the roots of insecurity in our state.

“To our dear officers, as you step out into the field, remember that you now bear a significant responsibility.

“You are not just protectors but also role models, mediators, and pillars of support. Remember, the real essence of your training goes beyond physical readiness or tactical expertise.

“It is about the development of a character that understands the value of empathy, community cohesion, and cultural respect“, he said.

He urged members of the team to be guided by the core valued behind establishment of their team.

“You have been saddled with the responsibility of facing a deadly enemy who has no respect for life or peaceful existence.

“These bandits have brought pain upon our mothers, daughters, sons, and fathers, and it is our religious obligation to protect them,” Radda said.

He promised to fully support all the security agencies, the security watch corps, vigilant groups, amongst others to enable them would work together to eradicate insecurity.

The State’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Muazu-Danmusa, said the government would not negotiate with any criminal, but would do everything humanly possible to protect the people.

“I think Katsina has highest number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-west zone as a result of that insecurity.

“However, we are making efforts to reverse the narration by putting in place excellent strategies that will address the problem,” he said.

Muazu-Danmusa said the government has benchmarked salaries of the KCSWCs on the basis of the national minimum wage to boost their morale for effective service delivery.

He further said the government was constructing offices for the corps, has provided them with patrol vehicles, motorcycles, weapons, gadgets, among others for their effective operations.

“So, we are going in tandem with the provision of the constitution in providing them with all these things,” he said.

He said that the corps was made up of indigenes of their host communities who have been in forefront in the fight against the terrorists therefore are familiar with the terrain.

The Commissioner of Police the Police Command in Katsina State, Mr Aliyu Abubakar-Musa, said recently the Command recorded successes in fighting banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and other criminal activities in the state.

“Notwithstanding the modest achievements, more still need to be done”, he said.

Abubakar-Musa said 1, 005 suspects were arrested in connection with 853 reported criminal cases in June, 2023, alone.

He also said the command has rescued 171 kidnap victims and neutralised five suspected kidnappers during the period under review.

The CP added that the police recovered 600 suspected rustled animals, four AK 47 rifles, six locally made guns and 517 live rounds of ammunition, among other achievements.

To ensure sustainability of the new approach, the governor also inaugurated “Security Intervention Trust Fund Committee” that would secure funds to be used in addressing those security challenges bedeviling the state.

Radda said the committee would identify prominent state indigenes and corperate organisations to solicit funds required for that purpose.

He said the committee would suggest areas where the funds would be utilised, and propose modest projects to be executed with the funds raised.

Such projects, he said, would be support the security measures in such areas as rehabilitation of victims and job creation for young persons.

Mr Aliyu Abdulkarim, a resident, advised the government to provide the corps with modern weapons and ensure that they worked in synergy with other security agencies.

He further advised the government to do everything possible to boost morale of the KCSWC personnel.

Abdulkarim also advised the neighboring states to work in synergy with Katsina by sharing intelligence, operation and resources to rid the entire zone of the unfortunate security situation.

It is expected that if the community-based approach works the people of the state would sleep with their eyes closed, while socio-economic activities would flourish more than before. (NANFeatures) www.nannews.ng / Flowerbudnews
