The Ekiti State Bureau of Tourism Development has partnered with the Ministry of Education and Mall of Fame Nigeria to boost tourism education in the state.
Mr Wale Ojo-Lanre, Director-General of the Bureau, disclosed this in a statement on Friday.
He said that the partnership would focus on organising inter-school tourism debates and quiz competitions for secondary schools.
He said the partnership was solidified when he led a delegation to visit the Permanent Secretary of Ekiti State Ministry of Education, Mr Michael Omolayo, on Friday.
According to him, the plan is to integrate tourism education into the school system, ensuring students develop early appreciation for the sector.
Reaffirming the state’s tourism potential, Ojo-Lanre emphasised the importance of educating students about tourism from an early age.
“Ekiti may not have oil, but it has something even greater, which is tourism. This competition is a step toward ensuring that students understand and appreciate tourism from an early age.
“Our goal is that by the end of every school session, each student in Ekiti should have visited at least one tourist site in the state.
“Education without tourism is knowledge lost,” he said.
“With this initiative, Ekiti state is set to strengthen its position as a leader in tourism education, equipping students with knowledge that extends beyond the classroom and into real-world experiences,” he said.
Also, Omolayo commended Gov. Biodun Oyebanji for prioritising tourism as a driver of the economy and social growth.
He also lauded Ojo-Lanre’s commitment to raising awareness about tourism in Ekiti state.
He expressed optimism about the sector’s potential and emphasised the state’s commitment to incorporating tourism education into the curriculum.
He further announced that the Commissioner for Education had endorsed the competition and pledged full support for its execution.
Mr Olugbenga Komolafe, representing Mall of Fame Nigeria, acknowledged the ministry’s backing and revealed that the National Inter-school Tourism Debate and Quiz Competition for secondary schools had received national endorsement from the Federal Ministry of Education.
Komolafe noted that the initiative had also gained international recognition from the World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage.

The event is scheduled to take place in June.

Adetunji Fadina, President of ATPN, made this commitment when Mr Tunde Kolade, South-West Vice President of FTAN, paid him a visit in Lagos on Saturday.

Drummer Ara reveals years of exploitation, abuse in music industry

    By Taiye Olayemi

Aralola Olamuyiwa, Nigeria’s foremost female talking drummer, popularly known as “Ara”, has revealed how she experienced a series of exploitation, enslavement, and abuse during her journey to stardom.

Ara, who recently celebrated her 50th birthday anniversary, shared her 25-year experience as an artiste while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday.

She stated that, at one point in her career, the leader of a particular record label she had a six-year contract with exploited her sexually.

He also isolated her from her family members, and subjected her to a series of abuses.

In spite of this, she remained grateful for her achievements while working with the record label, which brought her to the limelight, adding that she had to endure terrible situations.

“My journey to stardom is not complete if I do not talk about how I was exploited, enslaved, and abused for six years, from 2000 to 2007.

“I was isolated from my family; my parents were not allowed to see me, nor were my fellow artistes.

“At one point, I was sexually exploited when the owner of the record label started dating me, and he lied that he was not married until I discovered that he was expecting a child with another woman.

“It was a horrific experience, which I felt was influenced by some diabolical forces.

“At the end of the six-year contract, I had no house, no plot of land, no car, and no money. The official car I was given was taken away from me because I refused to renew the contract.

“My experience, I must say, was worse than that of the late Mohbad. At one point, I suffered from depression and had to leave the country when Professor Wole Soyinka offered me a job.

“However, while I was on that contract, I was in the spotlight. That was when I performed with Wyclef Jean, Stevie Wonder, and Wesley Snipes.

“I am not ungrateful; I appreciate all that I achieved during that time,” she said.

Ara noted that, while she was on the record label, the agreement was for her to receive 30 per cent of the entire proceeds, while the label would receive 70 per cent.

However, she stated that even with this arrangement, her money was always given to her in tranches whenever she needed it, so she had no full control over her resources.

Ara explained that she decided to share her experiences to highlight the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment in the entertainment industry.

She stressed that it was crucial for industry leaders and mentors to prioritise the well-being and safety of aspiring artistes, ensuring that they were not exploited or taken advantage of.

As the current Governor of the Lagos chapter of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN), Ara intends to inspire others to speak out against exploitation and abuse.

Looking back, she said that she would not have signed the contract without her father’s consent and the guidance of a lawyer.

“Truly, I do not look like what I have been through because I have found grace. The journey was rough, but now I have a fighting spirit.

“Then, I was isolated from fellow artists, so many people thought it was pride, but I was made to believe I was not supposed to mingle with people. I was really brainwashed.

“After the contract, another lady artiste was raised by the platform, and she was given my name as well, with just a difference in pronunciation.

“My shows were diverted to her. I reported it legally and to relevant people, but nothing was done, so I later decided to channel my energy toward building my career.

“A lot happened to me, and because I intentionally worked on myself to forget some experiences in order to keep my sanity, I developed a tendency to live in denial.

“At another point in my career, some of my colleagues resorted to diabolical means to drive me mad; one of them confessed to me after another one ran mad in Ibadan, and she is still mad till today,” she said.

Speaking on marriage, Ara said, “Yes, I still intend to get married; I value marriage a lot, and I know a good man will come.

“Although suitors have been coming, I have decided to take my time for self-development.

“I was legally married before, but it was annulled in 2011 for some reasons, but today we are friends. We had a son together, and he is 16 now.

“Lately, I have observed that men do not know how to approach ladies anymore; they rather focus on enticing ladies with material things, and for me, it does not work.

There was a time I was celibate for six and a half years; it was not easy,” she said.

Ara appreciated God for attaining the milestone of her golden jubilee, describing herself as more of a performing artiste than a recording artiste.

NAN reports that in her 25 years as an artiste, Ara has released no fewer than 40 songs digitally.

The progenitor of female talking drummers, Aralola Olamuyiwa, known as “Ara” has disclosed plans to be honoured by former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to commemorate her 25 years on stage and 50 years birthday.

Ara who disclosed this in a statement on Monday, said that the former President would be hosting a luncheon in her honour at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta on Sunday, Jan. 26.

Ara said that the gathering meant to attract creatives, philanthropists, and cultural enthusiasts, would feature captivating performances, heartfelt storytelling, and reflections that celebrate her achievements.

She said those performances would also reflect the collective strides of African culture in recent years.

According to her, the theme for the programme remained “In the Advancement of Its Own Culture Alone Lies True Progress for Each People”.

“The OOPL as the venue for tge luncheon was deliberately picked because it is a symbol of cultural preservation and intellectual advancement.

“The event would emphasise the indispensable role of cultural identity in societal growth, unity, and resilience.

“The celebration will culminate in a thank-you visit to governments, brands, organisations, and individuals whose unwavering support has been instrumental in elevating African talents and culture.

“These benefactors have played a vital role in empowering artistes like me to achieve global recognition, instilling pride in African heritage, and fostering a renaissance of cultural appreciation.

“This moment of gratitude is a recognition that every act of support contributes to a greater narrative, one where African voices, rhythms, and stories take their rightful place on the world stage,” she said.

For over two decades, Ara has been a beacon of excellence in preserving and promoting the beauty, rhythm, and artistry of Yoruba and African culture.

Through her unparalleled mastery of the talking drum, Ara has not only captivated global audiences but also bridged cultural divides, fostering a renewed appreciation for the depth and vibrancy of African traditions.

Ara’s artistry is a testament to resilience, passion, and an unyielding commitment to celebrating the essence of African heritage.

She has taken the talking drum, a sacred symbol of Yoruba identity, from local performances to the global stage, demonstrating that African sounds are not only universal but timeless.

Her journey has been one of purpose and perseverance. Through her performances, advocacy, and mentorship, Ara has inspired countless artistes to embrace their roots and share their stories with the world.

Her legacy is etched in the hearts of millions who see her as a cultural custodian and an enduring symbol of Africa’s artistic potential.

This celebration is more than a recognition of Ara’s personal achievement. it is a tribute to the cultural revolution she has championed.

It serves as a reminder that our collective heritage is our greatest strength, and nurturing it is the key to a brighter, more unified future.

  • U.S. TikTok Users Flock to Xiaohongshu Amid Looming Ban

U.S. TikTok Users Flock to Xiaohongshu Amid Looming Ban

    Hadia Safeer

Many young American users are migrating to Xiaohongshu, a Chinese platform, in response to the looming ban of TikTok by the U.S. government on the grounds of data privacy and national security.

These self-claimed TikTok Refugees, who have pushed Xiaohongshu to the top of the most downloaded app on Apple’s US App Store, are not just seeking a continuation of their digital presence but also waging a protest against government control.

By embracing a Chinese platform, these users are subtly resisting the overreach by U.S. authorities, especially in the wake of privacy scandals surrounding American tech giants like Facebook.

The move to Xiaohongshu reflects a profound discontent with the U.S. government’s role in policing the digital space. While the government frames its crackdown on TikTok as a measure to protect national security, many users see it as a direct attack on their freedom to access the platforms of their choosing.

In a nation that prides itself on free speech, the rhetoric around the TikTok ban highlights a contradiction: the same government that champions digital freedom seems increasingly willing to curtail it.

This paradox is not lost on the American public, who, in their migration to Xiaohongshu, are implicitly challenging the assumption that “freedom of speech” can only exist within the borders of American-controlled platforms.

Moreover, the growing interest in Xiaohongshu offers a glimpse into a more interconnected global digital space, where cultural barriers begin to blur and mutual understanding takes precedence over national boundaries.

X, which began as a platform for product reviews and lifestyle content, has evolved into a space where U.S. users are discovering a distinctly Chinese digital culture. In exploring Xiaohongshu, they are engaging in cultural exchange, learning to navigate a platform that blends social media, e-commerce, and digital storytelling in a way that is very different from Western counterparts like Instagram or TikTok.

This migration signals a quiet revolution in the way young people are redefining global digital engagement. By joining a Chinese platform, users are not merely seeking a substitute for TikTok; they are embracing a new model of digital solidarity.

This solidarity transcends national borders and highlights a collective rejection of the digital nationalism that has come to dominate the tech landscape.

Instead of isolating themselves within the confines of American-controlled platforms, users are forging connections across cultures, signaling that the digital world—like the physical world—should be free from restrictive nationalistic controls.

  • Your allegations against me untrue, embattled producer tells Singer, Mercy Chinwo

Your allegations against me untrue, embattled producer tells Singer, Mercy Chinwo

The Founder, Eeze Conceptz Limited, Mr Ezekiel Onyedikachukwu, has told the popular gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo, that her allegations against him were untrue and baseless.

Onyedikachukwu’s lawyer, Mr Maxwell Opara, stated this in a statement he signed and made available to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

Opara said Chinwo allegedly reneged on the record label and management contract with her label, Eeze Conceptz Limited, and presented falsehood to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against his client.

The lawyer, who clarified that Onyedikachukwu was never Chinwo’s manager, said his client was her producer who, sometimes in 2017, scouted and discovered her singing talent, developed the talent as well as promoted and brought her to the limelight in the gospel music industry.

He also said that the allegation that the embattled producer diverted the singer’s $345,000 U.S. dollars in royalties was false.
“The members of public must take note; that the allegations made against our client by Mercy Chinwo and the EFCC before obtaining the arrest warrant order for the arrest of our client were false and unfounded.
“This is evident as contained in the processes presented by the EFCC before the Honorable Court prior to obtaining the said order, wherein the EFCC alleged our client was Mercy Chinwo’s manager which he is not and never was.
“Again, the allegation that our client diverted Mercy Chinwo’s funds is also totally false and that our client could not be reached, which both Mercy Chinwo, and the EFCC very well know how our client could be reached and apprehended in such events.”
“Consequently, we have commenced the procedure in line with the rules of the Honorable acourt to have the said order set aside or vacated.
“And we strongly believe that, once the facts and evidences are truthfully placed before the Honorable Court, the Honorable Court will do that which is right and just in the circumstance.
“Hence, we urge the members of the public to disregard every smear publication and campaign coordinated by Mercy Chinwo against our client.”
He alleged that Chinwo signed a Label and Artist Management Contract for a five-year term beginning from 2017 to 2022 with their client but reneged.
According to Okpara, the contract covers among other things, ownership of the catalogue and splits of all royalties derived from the exploitation of music catalogue developed, financed and promoted by the record label.
The lawyer said in the midst of the dispute, Onyedikachukwu was allegedly detained at the EFCC Ilorin office between April 16, 2024 and April 25, 2024,
He said during the period, the commission carried out extensive audit of Onyedikachukwu’s bank accounts and found no evidence of wrongdoings.
He said a fundamental rights enforcement suit was filed at the Federal High Court (FHC) in Lagos Division on July 17, 2024, against the anti-graft agency, Chinwo and others, to restrain them from further harassment, arrest and detention of their client.
“It therefore came as a rude shock for the same commission to claim that Mr Onyedikachukwu’s had not been located and procured an ex-parte warrant of arrest on him.
“These schemes are targeted to malign the Label and its Founder and they will be very firmly resisted within the ambit of the law,” he said.

NAN reports that Justice Alexander Owoeye of a FHC in Lagos had, on Thursday, issued an arrest warrant against Onyedikachukwu.
The order followed an ex-parte motion moved by EFCC’s lawyer, Bilikisu Buhari, over alleged diversion of the singer’s $345,000 in royalties from her digital platforms and events.
Justice Owoeye adjourned the matter until Jan. 24 for Onyedikachukwu’s arraignment.

China completes main structure of world’s tallest bridge

GUIYANG,: (Xinhua)/FLOWERBUDNEWS:  — China on Friday finished the construction of the main structure of a bridge in its southwestern Guizhou Province, which is set to become the world’s tallest bridge.

The last steel girder weighing about 215 tonnes was precisely hoisted into place on Friday afternoon, connecting sections of the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge currently under construction.

Work will continue on the main cable wrapping, painting and the installation of minor facilities.

A project of Guizhou Transportation Investment Group Co., Ltd., the suspension bridge has a vertical height of 625 meters from the bridge deck down to the river surface — roughly twice the height of the Eiffel Tower.

The 2,890-meter bridge, with a span of 1,420 meters, is also the world’s largest span bridge to be built in a mountainous area.

Wu Chaoming, a senior engineer participating in the construction, said the bridge spans the Beipan River.

“To complete the steel girder hoisting, we have equipped the world’s largest span cable hoisting system,” Wu said, adding that the system is composed of transportation, hoisting and intelligent monitoring systems, effectively solving technical problems such as large hoisting spans and heavy hoisting weights.

The construction of the bridge started in January 2022 as part of an expressway project connecting the localities of Liuzhi and Anlong, and the bridge is expected to open to traffic this year.

With 92.5 percent of its land covered by mountains and hills, Guizhou has built nearly 30,000 bridges since the late 1970s and is now home to nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges.

Having numerous bridges spanning mountains and rivers, the once-isolated remote mountainous areas have undergone major transformations. The total length of expressways in the province has surpassed 9,000 km and the total road mileage now exceeds 220,000 km.

The construction of expressways has brought Guizhou closer to neighboring provinces and major economic hubs, significantly supporting the province’s rapid economic and social development, according to an official of the provincial department of transport.
