Shoola Durojaiye, founder of the Showtyme Foundation, has become a vocal advocate for Sickle Cell Awareness after his late daughter was diagnosed with the condition in 2017.

Durojaiye’s journey into advocacy began when he discovered he had a different genotype status than initially thought. Prior to getting married, he was told he was AA, but after his daughter’s diagnosis, he double-checked and found out he was AS.

‎In 2018, Durojaiye launched the “Double-check your genotype status and ball programme” to sensitise the community about the importance of knowing one’s genotype status and the need for double-checking due to prevalent cases of wrong genotype results. Unfortunately, his 12-year-old daughter, Demilade Shoola, passed away in August 6, 2024 due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia.

The 2024 edition of the programme was dedicated to Demilade’s memory, with 100 people benefiting from free testing at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. Two cases of Sickle Cell were detected, and the foundation reached out to the families to educate them on managing the condition.

‎” September is Sickle Cell Awareness month and I am also using the game of basketball as a platform to bring our communities together.

” Last edition,100 people benefited from the free test that was conducted at the UCH  Ibadan and we had two cases of Sickle Cell in which we also reached out to the families involved.on how best to go about it and manage the situation.

” Today we are also helping 100 persons get tested and will follow up on those whose results shows that they have sicle cell,” he said.

‎Durojaiye, the founder of the Showtyme foundation, emphasised the need for Nigerians to double-check their genotype status, citing the unbearable consequences of wrong results.

‎” The consequences is just too unbearable for any family to handle and our government should regulate all laboratories that conduct test as cases of wrong genotype results is alarming,” he said.

Dr. Olalekan Salami of the Infectious Diseases College of Medicine (UCH) stressed the importance of genotype compatibility, urging youths to know their genotype status and blood group before entering relationships.

‎He also called on the government to commit more resources to the health sector, addressing the brain drain and lack of resources that hinder healthcare delivery.

‎” This is just to reduce the menace of sickle cell disease in Nigeria.

‎” We lack the resources to perform our duty that’s why Nigerian doctors have less interest in working.

‎” At every level, primary, secondary and tertiary, the  health system we need is to encourage and put enough machineries in place.

” I mean human and material capacity and we can be at same level with the advanced countries.

‎” Most interestingly you will discover that even in the advanced countries those behind the break through are Nigerians and Africans, this shows that we can do this here if the atmosphere is conducive.

‎Joke Olatunde, a 21 year old said that this is the third time she is undergoing the test because the earlier results gave her doubts.

Olatunde said that the two pervious results were not the same.

‎“I am hoping that these results will let me know my  true genotype considering that UCH conducted it for us, ” she said.

Tomiwa Titilola said that this is the first times he is undergoing the test.

‎” I heard about about the test last week and coincidentally I came to the stadium to play basketball and decided to get it done.

‎” Though my father told me I am AS but it is not a bad idea checking and reconfirming it by myself, ” he said.

Durojaiye is an Ex Oyo state basketball player and founder of Showtyme Hoopers Basketball Club and Showtyme Angels Basketball Club.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed his administration’s commitment to sports development, highlighting the state’s progress in developing its sports economy over the past six years.

Gov Makinde made these remarks while declaring open the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Ibadan.

Gov Makinde stated that his government’s support from the NFF and other sports bodies has enabled it to rebuild sports infrastructure and put in place the right structures, attracting national and international sporting activities to Oyo State. He declared that Ibadan is now equipped to host big sporting events, including Super Eagles matches.

The governor appealed to the NFF to ensure that the state’s sporting facilities are checked and supported, promising to commit resources to ensure they are in proper shape for such events.

The governor said: “On behalf of the government and the people of Oyo State, I really want to thank the NFF president and your executive committee members for your interest in Oyo State.

“Yes, we are trying to develop a sports economy here, but if you don’t have the support or you don’t have the pressure from people like yourselves, some of our efforts will just go in vain.

“So, we are happy that today you brought your Annual General Assembly to Oyo State. And we are also happy that you brought the match we are going to watch this afternoon between the Nigeria U-20 women and the Rwanda U-20 women.

“And, as I mentioned when we were having breakfast this morning, Ibadan wants to have the opportunity to host big events – Super Eagles. So, let them check out our facilities, and whatever we need to do, I give you the promise that we will put the necessary resources in there.”

NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, commended Gov Makinde for his support for sports development in Oyo State, including the remodeling of the Lekan Salami Sports Complex and support for the Shooting Stars Sporting Club (3SC).

“This was why when we saw what he was doing in the area of sports, especially football, we were not surprised. We talked about remodelling the stadium, which he did. He also did all he could to revive 3SC.

Gender disparities in leadership, technology constitute barriers to inclusive growth — APWEN

    By Olatunde Ajayi

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) has identified gender disparities in field of technology and leadership as barriers to inclusive growth in Nigeria.

This, among others, were part of observations highlighted in a communique issued at the end of 2025 APWEN International Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Ibadan.

Prof. Chinenye Anyadike, Chairman of the Communique Committee, who signed the document made available to newsmen on Friday, said that Nigeria’s manufacturing sector had continued to face declining productivity, reduced competitiveness, and weak global integration.

The body also decried the skills gaps, inadequate infrastructure, and financing constraints, which it said have continued to limit industrial growth.

It also raised concerns about high production costs, reliance on imported components, and weak local capacity, noting that these challenges had perpetually hinder competitiveness.

APWEN noted that weak government–academia–industry synergy undermines recruitment, training, re-training, and mentorship of young engineers in Nigeria, while cybersecurity vulnerabilities had posed threats to digital manufacturing technologies.

It, however, said that indigenous innovations, renewable energy tools, digital solutions, and youth-led entrepreneurship models have promising future with potential for scaling Nigeria’s technological development.

The conference recommended that the federal government should collaborate with APWEN to develop policies and implement frameworks that would support the revitalisation of Nigeria’s manufacturing industries.

APWEN recommended that Federal Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology, Communications and Digital Economy and other related MDAs through Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) should encourage the adoption of AI, automation, robotics, IoT, and additive manufacturing to drive sustainable growth.

According to the communique, the conference featured multiple peer-review papers, which explored renewable energy integration, waste-to-wealth initiatives, and additive manufacturing technologies.

It also showcased AI-driven predictive maintenance models, IoT-enabled industrial systems, and indigenous material development and provided case studies demonstrating the feasibility of localized, low-cost, and sustainable manufacturing solutions.

The conference also highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between researchers and industries to translate findings into practical applications.

From the conference keynote addresses, panels discussions, and deliberations, participants learned that engineering innovation remained central to Nigeria’s re-industrialisation, with Industry 4.0/5.0 technologies offering transformative opportunities.

Participants were urged to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in engineering to create stronger, more innovative teams and are critical to breaking barriers for women and youth.

Among other key learning points at the conference include, emergence of cybersecurity as a significant challenge for modern digital manufacturing which must be addressed proactively.

    By Adewale Owoade

The founder of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN), Dr. Olusola Ayoola, has urged the government to invest in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the agricultural sector.

‎Ayoola disclosed this while delivering a lecture at the University of Ibadan,  Crop Protection and Environmental Biology Faculty of Agriculture.

The lecture was titled: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence To Enhance Efficiency Of Agricultural Production In Food And Industry In Nigeria: A strategic Analysis Of Prospects, Constraints And Mitigation Approaches.

‎Dr. Ayoola emphasised that AI can enhance agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and improve crop yields.

“The notion that AI will replace human is very wrong. Rather predictive AI can be used to detect farming patterns and predict the future of crops.

“AI in farming can be used for smart irrigation to know the percentage of water usage and saving.

‎”It can also detect diseases affecting each crop through AI vision.  It can be used in planting and harvesting crops .

“AI can be trained to identify ripe and unripe crops for harvest,” he said.

‎Ayoola said that cattle herders can get from AI using drones for 24/7 surveillance,  detection and deterrence of cattle herds and herders.

“24/7 surveillance detection and repulsion of pests.

“Smart tracking and geo-fencing of livestock prediction of impending attacks for farmers who take cattle around.  Each cattle with its tracking device inserted in it,”he said.

Moreover, Dr. Ayoola noted that unstable policies hinder agricultural growth and called on the government to provide a 50% subsidy for AI adoption by farmers.

He also recommended equipment leasing options with a “rent-to-own” model.

The Oyo State Government has dismissed allegations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration secured a ₦300 billion “fresh loan.”

In a statement signed by Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser (Media) to the Governor, the government clarified that the claims were false and mischievous.

The government explained that the House of Assembly approved ₦149 billion for refinancing and ₦151 billion for infrastructure investment and contractor financing. Refinancing involves replacing older, more expensive loans with new facilities on better terms, while contractor financing allows the government to fund projects without straining cash flow.

The government criticised the APC lawmaker who made the claims, accusing him of ignorance and absentee lawmaking. The lawmaker’s claim of a 500% increase in FAAC allocations was debunked, with the government attributing the actual increase to about 75%.

The government highlighted its achievements under Governor Makinde, including a significant increase in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from ₦20 billion to over ₦70 billion without introducing new taxes.

The government also emphasised its commitment to transparent financial management and investments that will make Oyo State self-sustaining, competitive, and prosperous.
