No ASUU Strike in UniAbuja, Student Shouldn’t Panic- VC Na’Allah

The management of University of Abuja has said academic and administrative activities on campus would go on despite reported strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

In a meeting with Provost, deans, directors, and heads of academic departments, the vice-chancellor, Professor Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, described the strike as divisive and unnecessary, vowing that the management would never allow the University to be crippled again.

He said, “As far as the management of the University is concerned, this institution is not on strike. Some people said they had declared a strike, but all of us, with the management, have decided that our normal activities in the University must go on. Our exam is going on, senate meeting will continue, everything we do as a university will continue, our calendar will not be disrupted by the grace of God, any longer.

“It is wrong to cripple the University over issues that are merely sentimental, and some of which we have dialogued over and resolved. We are prepared not to allow this disruption again.”

Na’Allah debunked all the reported allegations of the Union, which it claimed informed its declaration of indefinite strike. “Take for instance, the advert for the position of the vice-chancellor, we are not the only University that has advertised,” he said. “We had the support and approval of the government. The advert was done by the Minister of Education, all I did as vice-chancellor was to request, to ask for what is next and they decided this is what we must do. And if you look at the advertisement from the beginning, this fact is very clear. It is only that they had to send it to us for execution, that’s all.”

He also described the Union’s allegations of illegal recruitment, promotion, delay in the election of deanship, and microfinance bank establishment as unfounded, saying that the University had followed due process in all of these matters, and ensured that relevant institutions concerned with oversights were contacted.

While speaking specifically about the election of deans and establishment of microfinance bank, he noted that the elections time table had long been publicised, and four elections of deans had been conducted so far, while the University management had invested over N200 million in the proposed microfinance bank over the ASUU’s N4 million, before the union wrote directly to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop granting the license for our operation, instead of interacting with the board of the bank about whatever their requests were.

Nallah said, “The bank is purely a business outfit and a service to our local and indigenous community, including market men and women, farmers, small and middle scale business people.”

The vice-chancellor said his administration had been working hard to develop the University and would not fold its arms and allow a group of people to destabilise its calendar. “For over four years, our goal has been to lift this University much higher than it was, and this we have succeeded in doing by taking our academic and infrastructural developments to a world-class level, developing an integrated portal that ensured transparency and ease of accessing results, branding of the University, introduction of foreign languages, introduction of new faculties and several departments, among numerous achievements.

“Overall, the armed forces is building and maintaining the momentum against the terrorist and their cohorts across the country. Troops are conscious and are not loosing sight of importance of momentum, when it comes to fighting such vicious adversaries.

“The current situation depict a a strain of tactical achievements in degrading the terrorist by dismantling most of the terrorist infrastructure in the NE, killing majority of the combatants, killing a lot of their senior combatants. It must be noted that, many of the terrorist commanders as well have been taken off the battlefield.

Ongoing operations have suppressed the terrorist and prevented them from achieving their strategic objectives.”

Buba said troops have equally denied the terrorist freedom of action and disrupted their actives, thereby reducing their effectiveness.

“Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to rid the environment of terrorist and the military is not resting on its oars,” he said

World Press Freedom Day: Editors Salute Journalists Working Under Harsh Conditions.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has saluted Journalists for working under harsh economic conditions and reaffirmed that media freedom, freedom of expression and access to public information are crucial to democracy, which must be at the heart of Nigerian government’s values and actions.

The professional body of editors and media executives in Nigeria also said that it recognized the crucial role played by journalists, media workers and free/ independent media in protecting the country democracy and advised them not to give up, in spite of the prevailing economic challenges.

In a statement issued on Thursday to mark this year’s World Press Freedom Day and signed by its President, Mr. Eze Anaba and the General Secretary, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the Guild also requested the National Assembly to initiate and adopt a law to protect journalists.

The organization particularly referred to journalists who speak out on matters of public interest, especially against abusive and strategic lawsuits, which are regularly initiated to silence them.

“This year, the World Press Freedom Day, is dedicated to emphasizing the importance of good journalism amidst the current global environmental crisis”, the NGE noted.

World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world.

It also to defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists, who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The day also acts as a reminder to governments of the need to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

It highlights the importance of a free, independent, and pluralistic media in fostering transparency, accountability and democracy.

The Editors further explained.’In line with the theme of this year celebration, we believe that journalism and freedom of expression are crucial in the context of the current global environmental crisis.

‘’Journalism and freedom of expression help in raising public awareness about environmental issues; holding power accountable; amplifying marginalized voices; promoting transparency and accountability; fostering public debate/engagement, and providing a platform for solutions.’

More importantly, the NGE said that this year’s World Press Freedom Day provides an opportunity for every stakeholder in the media community to continue to drum it to the hearing of both state and non-state actors – about the importance of press freedom and the challenges being faced by journalists.

These challenges NGE added include; censorship, harassment, imprisonment and violence.

The editors stressed the urgent need by the government to take deliberate and sustained action to promote press freedom and good journalism in the country.

According to the editors, ‘’The federal government will fundamentally be promoting the enabling environment for media to operate responsibly, if it adopts a law to protect persons who speak out on matters of public interest against abusive lawsuits meant to silence them.

‘’The federal government should take a cue from the European Union and other democracies around the world who have adopted similar laws to protect journalists and media houses against Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP suit).

‘’More so, there are still many obnoxious and anti-media laws in our statutory books that are targeted at journalists and media houses. The National Assembly (NASS) must take immediate step to repeal them.’’

The NGE also urged government at all levels, international organizations and civil society organization to protect and promote press freedom; ensure safety and security for journalists/media houses; and ensure that all restrictive laws and policies targeted at the media are repealed.

The NGE added: ‘’We celebrate the courageousness and commitment of journalists across the country, who continue to risk everything to bring us the truth and reliable/credible information. We also acknowledge the growing threats to press freedom – from violence and censorship to disinformation and economic pressures.

‘’We pay tribute to the journalists who have lost their lives or faced persecution, and we stand in solidarity with those under threat or attack and those who continue to work under very harsh economic conditions.’’

The editors said that they would continue to advocate for press freedom, freedom of expression and access to information, adding that they are crucial to good governance, democratic societies

False Alarm Against NiDCOM Boss Will Fail Again, Says Commission

The Nigerian in Diaspora Commission, (NiDCOM), has raised an alarm over what it described as a sinister plot being hatched by enemies of the good work the Commission is doing, saying such a blackmail against the agency’s CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa, will fail as in the past.

The press statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, frowned at the development, describing it a handiwork of an unscrupulous and unprogressive group who are bent on raising a false alarm with fake documents, attempting to malign the character and hard work of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the pioneer Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has been uncovered.

As NIDCOM turns five this year, and despite all odds, including funding and office challenges, these individuals who are bitter that their channels of duping unsuspecting Nigerians in the name of diaspora, have been closed by the establishment of NIDCOM, plan a desperate media campaign of blackmail and lies.

These groups of people have tried several routes but have failed in the past, including petitions that have been thoroughly examined and dismissed by relevant authorities.

“As NIDCOM turns five, this month, its leadership led by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, will certainly not be distracted and will remain focused on programs and policies such as the Diaspora Housing, Diaspora Mortgage, Nigeria Diaspora Day activities, Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), Diaspora Investment Fund, several interventions affecting Nigerians abroad amongst others.

“It is therefore necessary for members of the public to disregard any statements or conferences geared towards this course.

“As NIDCOM turns five this month, the Commission plans to modestly roll out the drums to celebrate its successes in the last five years as well as reflect on the challenges and plans ahead to meet the goals and aspirations of Nigerians in the Diaspora.

“NIDCOM, under the leadership of Hon. Abike Dabiri Erewa will remain focused on its goals and ideals, as it continues to put diaspora issues on the front burner of national discourse, and continually champions the need to engage the diaspora in the programs and policies of the government and tap into the enormous human resources of Nigerians in diaspora, described as the most educated immigrants in the world”. The statement reads.

BREAKING: ASUU UniAbuja begins indefinite strike

The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities has begun an indefinite strike to draw attention to developments bordering the union.

The union announced its decision to embark on the strike on Thursday at the end of its congress, held at the Permanent Site of the institution.

Members of the UniAbuja ASUU have been at loggerheads with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman over the processes for the appointment of a new VC.

An advertorial that surfaced in a national daily on March 15, 2024, sought a replacement for Na’Allah.

However, ASUU members, in a conference, rejected the ad, declared it “illegal,” and stated that it was not from the governing council.

The Chairman, UniAbuja ASUU, Sylvanus Ugoh, said the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended; 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2) empowers only the governing council to advertise the VC’s seat when declared vacant.

He argued that no other organ or individual is legally vested with the power to initiate the procedure of appointing a successive VC.

You will recall that the university administration placed an advert on the vacancy of the post of a Vice-Chancellor on Friday 15th March 2024,” Ugoh had said.

  • Tinubu signs Executive Order to unlock $10bn in fresh investments

Tinubu signs Executive Order to unlock $10bn in fresh investments

President Bola Tinubu says he has signed an Executive Order to unlock about $10 billion in fresh investments in the oil and gas sector.

He said this on Tuesday at the opening of a two-day retreat on economic transformation and development organised by the House of Representatives.

Tinubu, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the federal government signed the consolidated guidelines for implementing Fiscal Incentives for the Oil & Gas Sector just last week.

He said the guidelines represented a cornerstone of the Presidential Directive and was also aimed at enhancing the Nigerian oil and gas sector’s global competitiveness as well stimulating economic growth.

The Executive Order also streamlines contracting processes, procedures, and timelines from 36 months to six months.

The order also seeks to ensure that local content requirements are implemented without impeding investments or the cost competitiveness of oil and gas projects.

“All of these have the same objective – to reduce government interference with the commercial imperatives of businesses in the country so that businesses based here can be competitive and focus on their core objectives of economic growth through innovation and trade.

We will need the support of the National Assembly to fully implement some of these reforms, as statutory changes will be required in some areas.

“I am confident that when the time comes, the governing partnership we have established between the Executive and the Legislature will ensure that these changes are effected swiftly to benefit our nation.”

The president expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Assembly for their swift action in considering and passing the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Reenactment) Act 2024.

“Your actions have substantially fortified the legal framework of the Students Tertiary Education Loan Program, ensuring its efficient implementation. These achievements are a testament to the power of our partnership and the positive impact it can have on our nation.

In a World Bank document titled “Legislative Oversight and Budgeting: A World Perspective,” Thomas Frederick Remington wrote “for legislators to effectively fulfil their roles of representation, oversight, and law-making, a certain level of cooperation between the Legislature and the Executive in policymaking is essential.

“The legislature must have the capacity to monitor the executive, and the executive, in turn, should be willing to comply with the legislative enactments

“It is not just a coincidence but a strategic advantage for our country that the governing relationship between the Executive and the Legislature perfectly reflects this ideal.

“As you know, my administration is implementing significant policy changes to reform how we govern and position our country for progress and shared prosperity for all citizens.

These reforms, while necessary and, in some cases, long overdue, are not without their challenges. I am deeply grateful for your unwavering support and understanding during these times. Your understanding and support have been invaluable, and I am confident that with our continued collaboration, we can overcome any challenges that lie ahead.

“The oil and gas industry has long been the lifeblood of our national economy. My administration is working tirelessly to change this and diversify our economy from overreliance on the production of fossil fuels. However, we are also determined to maximise revenue potential from this critical industry.

For this reason, we are pushing policies to attract investment in the oil and gas sector.

“We can only justify our collective mandate and the trust our people repose in us through constructive collaboration between the National Assembly and the Executive. This joint effort is the minimum the people who voted for us expect from us.

However, the very essence of checks and balances means there will be times when the executive and legislative prerogatives inevitably collide. Above all else, the national interest must guide our decisions in those moments.

“We share a common responsibility in shaping the future of our nation, and it is through our collaboration that we can effectively fulfil this duty

In his address, Abbas Tajudeen, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the House made it a deliberate decision to focus on tax reforms and modernisation as well as a review of the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Reform Act (2021) at the event.

He said the overarching objective was to discuss and identify concrete legislative strategies for economic transformation

  • Governor Ododo Tackles Insecurity Headlong In Kogi State

Governor Ododo Tackles Insecurity Headlong In Kogi State

On Friday, April 26, 2024, the Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, took the State to a higher notch in the fight against insecurity with the ‘Unveiling of Operational Vehicles for the Kogi State Vigilante Service’. Forefront News Editor-in-Chief, AMOS DUNIA, who was in the State and witnessed the colourful event, notes that it was a pragmatic approach aimed at addressing the worrying security situation in the Confluence State which serves as a major link between the Northern and Southern States of the country. Excerpts.

While other State Governors who assumed office about a year ago are still grappling and struggling to chart the road map for definite direction to take in addressing the worrying and unacceptable insecurity that is ravaging their states, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi already has a workable blueprint to tackle the cankerworm headlong.

In less than 100 days in office, the ebullient and ever-smiling Governor Ododo has brought simplicity into governance by demystifying bottlenecks usually created by some people in the corridors of power to make administration cumbersome. The open and transparent style of governance that has made it possible for more openness with the people, enables him to feel first-hand their pulse, thus enabling him to make proactive and decisive decisions devoid of bureaucratic hiccups.

With his colleagues from the Northern States opting to visit the United States of America to learn how to address insecurity in Nigeria, the ever-pragmatic Governor Ododo knew exactly what he needed to do by moving and adopting practical methodology. Indeed, without the usual media blitz and fanfare, he launched the ‘Kogi State Vigilante Services for Community Policing’ intending to achieve practical and sustainable results for the safety of lives and property across the State.

The Governor started by quietly establishing the State’s internal security network with the recruitment of an initial five thousand (5000) able-bodied personnel that were picked from the 21 Local Government Areas of the State in equal proportion. The recruitment of the 5000 personnel has not only addressed the dicey issue and challenges of insecurity but, also gone a long way in addressing the high unemployment rate in the State.

For a start, the Governor Ododo-led administration purchased 105 vehicles and 42 motorbikes that were distributed on an equal basis amongst the 21 Local Government Areas for effective patrols, monitoring and policing of the communities to check the activities of criminal elements.

Taking into consideration that Kogi State is sharing boundary with about eight other states namely Benue, Edo, Enugu, Ekiti, Kwara, Niger, Ondo and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the propensity to experience invasion and influx of criminals from other states into Kogi is quite high as some of the criminal elements may want to use the connecting State to evade arrest or take refuge and escape from being apprehended.

Conscious of this fact, the Ododo-led government’s renewed onslaughts against criminals have become operational with the recent launch of the ‘Kogi State Vigilante Services for Community Policing’ at the Muhammadu Buhari Square with a clear directive by the Governor to the internal security service that their operations in all communities shall be based on 24 hours response by the well trained joint team of vigilante service men and conventional security agencies.

Importantly, he explained that the government’s policy drive is targeted at enhancing intelligence gathering and shorter response time to distress calls as a model for community policing in Nigeria.

Governor Ododo, in flagging off the programme, recalled that the recent launch of the Metropolitan Quick Response in Lokoja and other major towns in the state and the unveiling of the operational vehicles were part of the evolving security measures and strategies geared towards ensuring that the State government keep the environment safe and secure as well as build on the solid foundation of the security architecture laid by the immediate past administration in the state.

However, he was quick to state that as the administration embarks on a consistent review of the security situation in the state, his resolve to maintain law and order in all parts of Kogi remains total, even as he vowed that the fight against criminals in the Confluence State shall be won.

In the Governor’s words; “These operational security vehicles which is the first instalment of several hundred to be provided over the next few weeks will advance the safety and security of lives and property in all parts of the state as it stands as one of our most significant operational response yet to the recent upsurge in criminal activities in some parts of the state.

“During my inauguration, I promised to embark on people-oriented programmes and projects that will directly touch the lives of our people. No doubt, to achieve the objectives of our programmes and policies, Kogi State must remain safe and secure for everyone.

“We cannot, and we will not allow criminal elements to undermine the progress and prosperity we have worked so hard to achieve in our state,” the Governor vowed.

In his usual humble nature and giving honour to whom it is due, Governor Ododo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as father and leader, for his unwavering commitment to reversing the spate of inherited security challenges in the country, stressing that as a government, Kogi State remains in total support of the President in his determination to take the fight to the terrorists in all parts of the county as have been witnessed with the recent onslaughts to degrade cells of bandits and terrorists across Nigeria.

promising that his Government shall remain grateful for their services in keeping the state and country safe.

According to Ododo; “Security remains the responsibility of everyone and we must not lose our guard at any point in time. Together, we shall overcome the challenges of insecurity and emerge stronger than ever as a state and country”.

That is certainly the hallmark of a determined, committed, focused and service-oriented leadership by a governor that has already demonstrated that the welfare and security of the people should and must take a premium position in line with the provisions of the Constitution that define what governance should be.

In his usual humble nature and giving honour to whom it is due, Governor Ododo commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he referred to as father and leader, for his unwavering commitment to reversing the spate of inherited security challenges in the country, stressing that as a government, Kogi State remains in total support of the President in his determination to take the fight to the terrorists in all parts of the county as have been witnessed with the recent onslaughts to degrade cells of bandits and terrorists across Nigeria.

the security operational vehicles was a further testament to his administration’s collective resolve to tackle security challenges in the state head-on with enhanced speed and overall efficiency of the security operatives.

For him, the gallantry and dedication of the men and women of all the security agencies and the State vigilante services must be appreciated, especially for their sacrifices in the line of duty, promising that his Government shall remain grateful for their services in keeping the state and country safe.
