  • PRESS RELEASE NDIC URGES CAUTION ON NDIC Urges Caution on Adoption Of Crypto-Currencies

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of
the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC)
Umaru Ibrahim has advised Nigerians to exercise
maximum caution in the adoption of crypto-currencies
as their preferred mode of financial transactions. He
warned that while various forms of digital currencies
currently in operation have their positive and negative
attributes, those who patronize them risk losing their
savings because the medium is largely unregulated and
without the backing or support from the traditional
Central Banks in almost all financial jurisdictions.
The NDIC Boss made the remarks during the courtesy
call by the Board and Management of the Corporation
on the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila in his
officer at the National Assembly Complex, in Abuja.
Earlier, in her opening remarks, the Chairman of the
Board of the Corporation, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, informed
the Speaker that the NDIC remained a critical player in
the Nigerian financial  safety net that had contributed
immensely to the growth and stability of the nation’s
financial stability in the 30 years of its operations using
best practices. She added that recently the NDIC
became the worst public sector institution in Nigeria to
be awarded three International Standard Organization
(ISO) certifcations simultaneously by the British
Standards Institute (BSI) in view of its result oriented
    system, processes and procedures.
The Board Chairman solicited the assistance of the
House in the passage of the NDIC Act Amendment Bill
currently before the National Assembly. In his response,
the Speaker commended NDIC on the visit, describing it
as a right step towards fostering harmonious working
relationship with agencies in the executive arm of
    government.
On the issue of Crypto currency, he noted that as the
entire world currently exploited ways of mainstreaming
its use into the global #nancial landscape, NDIC and
other safety-net participants in the country must not be
left behind in the adoption of appropriate regulatory
framework to deal with the prevalence of crypto
currencies in the global financial space.
The Hon. Speaker said added that only recently, there
was a meeting of world leaders in Osaka, Japan to
deliberate on the subject. Responding to a specific request from the Board and Management of the
Corporation, he assured that the House, under his
leadership will ensure that the most appropriate

  • Documenting immigrants key to security in Nigeria – Okowa

Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has said that documenting immigrants will ensure proper planning and assist in the security of lives and property in the country.

The governor stated this on Tuesday when the Comptroller-General of Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Mohammad Babandede, visited him in Asaba.

He said that documenting the aliens was part of appropriate reforms to be taken for the benefit of Nigerians and the country.

“It is very important both for security purposes and for our population plan, for foreigners to be documented.

“Without appropriate documentation, it can impact negatively on the planning for the nation when it comes to taking care of our people.

“So, without the right account of our people, our resources will become depleted and planning will be affected drastically,” he said.

The governor added, “We must congratulate you on the immigrant reform.

“I think it is important for us as a nation because you find out that people from other countries just come into our country and settle in any part of the nation.

“They are not documented in any manner and that is not good for a nation because if they commit crimes, they cannot be traced.

“It is important that even without people committing crime, we should have documentation of foreigners in our country”.

He commended NIS for initiating other landmark reforms, particularly the e-passport which would be tied down to national identity.

“It is something that is very innovative, something that I believe can really help us in national security.

“This is because, people bearing all manner of names and people with more than one passport will surely become a thing of the past.

“So, we want to thank you for thinking about this thoroughly and bringing up this reform,” he said.

The governor assured the Service of his administration’s support in rendering vital services to Deltans and Nigerians in general.

Earlier, Babandede had said that he was in Delta to commission some projects.

He commended the governor for his administration’s numerous support for NIS.

  • Video: Royal father suggests oath taking for public officers to curb corruption

    By Joan Odafe
The Osolo of Isolo, Oba Kabiru Adelaja, on Sunday said that the rate of corruption among public officials would dwindle if traditional means of oath-taking is employed during their swearing-in ceremonies.

Adelaja said that the traditional process would put fear in the hearts of leaders on the need to be upright in their dealings with the people they serve and be accountable for their decisions.

The traditional ruler, who made the call while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that many politicians and government officials lack the fear of God because they see God as merciful and forgiving.

He said that if leaders are made to take oath of office through the traditional gods, most government officials would be more conscientious in carrying out their activities.

“Leaders know they can get away with Christianity or Islam, but if they take oaths based on traditional gods like Ogun, they will never steal, knowing those gods do not accept sorry.

“They know that the gods will not spare them when they err. You steal, you die.

“We must practice our culture; all tribes have different cultures. If it is adopted while taking the oath of office, our leaders will be accountable.

“Let us go back to our culture. Anybody who wants to hold any political office, that needs to carry out projects, should be made to swear before Ogun,” he told NAN.

The monarch decried the rate of corruption among leaders within their short stay in the office, which, he said, could be linked to the state of poverty in the nation.

“Majority of kidnappers being arrested are graduates. After all said and done, they will say it is because the have no jobs,” he said.

The monarch appealed to the various tiers of government to create more employment opportunities for graduates in the country.
