National Tourism Policy review upholds promotion of domestic tourism- NESG

    By Taiye Olayemi

The Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), said that the current review of the National Tourism Policy was focused on promoting domestic tourism.

Ms Ngozi Ngoka, Thematic Lead, Tourism and Hospitality Industries, Thematic Group, said the review was a deliberate move to ensure that tourism contributed to the Gross Domestic Product(GPD) of the nation’s economy as obtained in other countries.

Ngoka said this on Saturday in Lagos, during the tourism and hospitality stakeholders validation of the 2024 Draft of the tourism policy.

She, however, urged Nigerians to travel within the country for wealth creation.

She stated that the tourism policy which was originally made in 1990, was first reviewed in 2005 to strategically sustain the sector.

“The tourism policy contains a lot. It’s the best thing that will happen to the tourism industry.

“This is because for the first time we are going to have a comprehensive document that streamlines the way tourism will work in the country and we have a very fantastic team working on it.

“We are excited that this is the first time it’s going to come to fruition.

“A big part of this tourism policy is to develop the domestic tourism because a lot of countries that have tourism as a major contributor to its GDP started by traveling domestically,” she said.

Ngoka used South Africa as a case study.

According to her, during apartheid, South Africa managed its domestic tourism, by the time apartheid ended, tourism became a big market for them.

“We, therefore, encourage everybody to travel within Nigeria, to use our domestic products,” she advised.

Ngoka stated that many nations were able to revive their economy through tourism.

She said that tourism remained the bedrock for all economic activities.

Speaking further on the policy review, Ngoka said it was necessary to maintain the integrity and ability of the tourism policy and guide the industry toward global competitiveness, and sustainable growth.

She said the review involved updating the policy to reflect new legal and regulatory requirements.

She said it would also involve incorporating technological advancements and aligning with current best practices for operational excellence.

She also said that the review would specify how risks would be managed effectively and how to respond proactively to changes in market conditions and tourist preferences.

“In reviewing the national tourism policy, our vision is to transform Nigeria into a leading tourism destination in Africa and globally.

“Also to harness our cultural heritage, natural landscapes, creative and sports industries, and vibrant communities to attract tourists and investors.

“Our guiding principle is on sustainability, innovation, marketing and collaboration.

“We expect that at the end of the day, we will record increased tourist arrivals, create jobs, and improve global perception of Nigeria as a premiere tourist destination,” she said.

Ngoka said the policy review team were divided into seven groups.

The groups include: Infrastructure development; Marketing and promotion; Regulatory and institutional framework.

Others are: Stakeholders engagement, Economic impact; Implementation plan and Sustainability and environmental considerations.

“We encourage all stakeholders, including government officials, private sectors and community representatives, to actively participate in the implementation process.

“By working together, we can create a sustainable, inclusive and competitive tourism sector that significantly contribute to Nigeria’s socio-economic development,” she said (NAN) (nannews.ng)

  • FAO, stakeholders develop framework to mitigate flooding

FAO, stakeholders develop framework to mitigate flooding

    By Talatu Maiwada

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations says it has developed
a flood-trigger framework to mitigate the impact of the disasters in Nigeria.

The UN organisation said it achieved the feat in collaboration with key stakeholders.

Mr Gift Umor, the Climate Smart Agriculture Specialist of the FAO in Nigeria, disclosed this during the National Flood Trigger
Framework Development Workshop organised by FAO on Wednesday in Yola.

The event was held in collaboration with the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet),
National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).

Others included the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and State Emergency Development Agencies from Borno,
Adamawa and Yobe, funded by the German Government.

According to Umor, the workshop aims to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in flood damage assessment and to establish a
unified framework for preparedness and anticipatory action.

The specialist said “a lot of stakeholders and government agencies implement various activities to mitigate the impact of flooding in the country.

“However, we identified a significant gap, which was lack of a unified framework to support anticipatory action across partners.

“Currently, partners work individually, but this framework will enable joint efforts to combat the disaster that devastated communities in recent years.”

He emphasised that the workshop reflected FAO’s commitment to supporting flood-prone communities and advancing disaster preparedness across the country.

Mr John Gbadegesin, the Deputy Director, NIHSA, urged citizens residing in flood-prone areas to consider relocation to minimise the impact and save lives.

He said “NIHSA provides early warning information, promptly disseminated to state governments, local communities, critical stakeholders and humanitarian organisations.

“However, in many flood-prone areas, residents often hold on to traditional beliefs, cultural ties and emotional attachments to their communities.

“We hope this workshop fosters renewed collaboration among federal and state actors, leading to reduced flood impact and a shift in public attitude
    toward flood preparedness.”

Mr Ademuyiwa Oyewumi, an Assistant Director, NASRDA, highlighted the essential role of earth observation satellites in disaster preparedness,
    response, recovery and management.

Oyewumi explained that satellite data is invaluable, providing insights into forecasts, flood extents and damage assessments through satellite imagery to
assist in resource allocation and planning.

He said that through the adoption of collaborative framework, key stakeholders would be able to create an approach to reduce flood risks, protect lives
    and build resilient communities.(NAN)(www.nannews.com).

LG electronics, Clean Ace train laundry providers

    By Rukayat Adeyemi

LG Electronics says its partnership with Clean Ace Academy is to provide free training for laundry service providers, enhance their skills and upscale their businesses.
Mr Samuel Odenusi, Manager, Commercial Laundry Business, LG Electronics West Africa, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of a Masterclass on Friday in Lagos.
Odenusi noted that since the programme started in August, over 150 laundry service providers had been trained, with a goal of reaching about 1,000 participants in Lagos by the end of 2024.
He added that there are plans to expand the initiative to other states of the federation by January 2025.
Odenusi explained that the partnership was premised on the desire to ensure that participants received high-quality training.
He said the Masterclass also showcased the best equipment suitable for the laundry business.
According to him, the Masterclass reinforces the consciousness of the laundry attendants to the disadvantage of using domestic washing machine for business purpose.
“It is advisable to use only the commercial laundry system for commercial laundry purposes.
“Not just for laundry business alone, but hotel, hospitality, restaurant, hospital businesses, among others.
“We are very committed to the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, because it is important for those in the laundry business to get it right.
“The laundry business is recession-proof, because people wear and use clothings on daily basis, dirty them, hence the need for laundry service.
“Though, many people have the domestic washing machines at home; they do not have the time to operate them or iron their clothes.
“This may be because of their busy lifestyle; so they may still have to partronise laundry centres,” he said.
According to him, LG started the business of commercial laundry in Nigeria in 2019.
Odenusi said, although, the brand was known for consumers electronics, it decided to venture into the commercial space by introducing the LG commercial laundry system into the market.
He said that the product was introduced due to a mindset shift of consumers, from personally doing bulk of their laundries themselves, to patronising laundry centres.
“LG is committed to producing durable products and has sustained its name over the years
“A lot of brand has been in the business earlier, but we decided in 2019 to also venture into the laundry industry, which is growing on yearly basis,” he said.
On his part, Mr Enibukun Adebayo, Chief Executive Officer, Clean Ace Dry Cleaning, lauded LG for the partnership and the free training provided for the laundry attendants.
Adebayo noted that, except for some of the laundry service providers who have the opportunity to travel outside the country, such trainings were rare to get by professionals in the laundry business in Nigeria.

Leading the Masterclass, the Clean Ace boss tutored the laundry attendants on fabric-care industry, including staff management strategies, maintaining production standards, and customer retention techniques.

He charged the participants to adopt standard checklist to ensure high quality service delivery, while taking precautionary measures, and avoiding health hazards associated with cleaning solvents.

A participant, Mrs Amosun Bolanle, described the training as an eye-opener, while commending LG for championing it.
