Excitement builds at Issa junior tennis championship in Lagos

The sixth Alhaji Adewale Issa Foundation Junior Tennis Championship has reached its fourth day, featuring thrilling contests in the U-12, U-14 and U-16 categories.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition is being held at the National Stadium, Lagos.

The tournament, which began on Monday, has witnessed outstanding performances from young players representing different parts of Nigeria.

The championship covers three age groups, U-12, U-14 and U-16, with both boys and girls competing for honours.

NAN reports that Precious Ohima defeated Destiny Dahzosou 4-1, 4-0 in the U-16 girls’ quarter-final, while Bisola Ogunkolade beat Mariam Ogunbanwo 4-0, 4-0.

Oyinkansola Adejumobi outclassed Sarah Achibong 4-1, 4-0 to reach the U-14 girls’ semi-final, while Tiffany Oshi overcame Whitney Orimoloye 4-1, 5-3 to also progress.

Success Godwin cruised past Benjamin Alaere 4-0, 4-0 in the U-14 girls’ category to secure a semi-final place.

In the U-14 boys’ matches, Goodluck Akinfunmiloye trounced Jerry Goodluck 4-0, 4-0, while Peter Ubiebi overcame Daniel Igbinovia 4-2, 4-0 to advance.

Marvelous Bolarinwa edged John Ilerioluwa 4-1, 5-3 in the U-16 boys’ quarter-final, while David Edwards beat Toheeb Oseni 5-3, 4-1 to qualify.

Players are displaying skill, resilience and fair play, producing an electrifying atmosphere throughout the matches.

The Adewale Issa Foundation has continued to encourage tennis development in Nigeria through this annual championship.

The event provides a platform for young talents to gain valuable exposure, experience and competition.

Players across the age categories expressed delight at participating, describing the tournament as a strong platform for grassroots tennis development.

They said they looked forward to enjoying one of the best experiences of their young sporting careers.

The championship concludes on Saturday, with winners in each category expected to receive prizes and recognition.
