Protection, preservation of rich cultural national heritage pivotal, says NCMM D-G

The Director General, National Commission for Museums and Monuments Mr. Olugbile Holloway, has emphasised the importance of raising awareness about preserving, protecting, and appreciating humanity’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Holloway made this call at the 2024 International Museum Day celebration, themed “Museums for Education and Research.”

Represented by the Curator of the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan,
Mrs. Oriyomi Otuka, praised the dedication of staff members in preserving and appreciating cultural heritage.

“The theme resonates deeply with the core mission of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.

“This is also in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the president in areas of education, cultural, and creative economy,” she said.

Otuka highlighted that museums are not just artifact repositories but hubs for learning, exploration, and enlightenment.

 

“In today’s fast-paced, technologically driven world, museums play a crucial role in understanding our past, present, and future.

“They offer immersive educational experiences, serve as research platforms, and provide valuable resources and insights.

“They serve as platforms for education, offering immersive experiences that transcend traditional classroom settings.

“Museums are crucial hubs for research, providing scholars and enthusiasts alike with access to invaluable resources and insights.

“Through rigorous study and analysis, we uncover hidden truths, unravel mysteries, and piece together the rich tapestry of human history,” she said.

As the International Museum Day is celebrated, Otuka urged reaffirming our commitment to harnessing museums’ power for societal betterment.

“Let us strive to make museums inclusive, accessible, and engaging for all ages and backgrounds.”

She encouraged staff members to give their best efforts, confident that together, they can make a meaningful impact.

“Education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world. Let us leverage museums’ transformative power to educate, inspire, and empower future generations.”
