EFCC Files N84bn Money Laundering Charges against Yahaya Bello, Others

    By Danladi Ahmed

Abuja (Flowerbudnews): The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC,  has dragged former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja for alleged N84billion money laundering offences.

His nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Sulaiman and Abdulsalam Hudu were also charged o g with him,Dele Oyewale, EFCC Spokesman disclosed in a statement in Abuja on Thursday.

The EFCC is prosecuting the quartet on an amended 17-count charge of money laundering, breach of trust and misappropriation of fund to tune of N84, 062,406,089.88 (Eighty-four Billion, Sixty-two Million, Four Hundred and Six Thousand, Eighty-nine Naira, Eighty-eight Kobo).

To make way for Yahaya Bello’s inclusion in the trial, prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court of an application before it for the amendment of the charges against the defendants, dated February 5, 2024, and filed the same day.

He then prayed that the amended charges be read to the defendants for them to take their pleas. The judge granted the prayer, overruling objections from A.M Aliyu SAN, and Olusegun Joolawo SAN, counsels to Ali Bello and Suleiman, first and second defendants.

Count one of the charges reads: “That you, Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, Yahaya Adoza Bello (still at large) and Abdulsalam Hudu (still at large), sometime in September, 2015 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, conspired amongst yourselves to convert the total sum of N80,246,470,089.88 (Eighty Billion, Two Hundred and Forty-six Million, Four Hundred and Seventy Thousand, Eighty-nine Naira, Eighty-eight Kobo), which sum you reasonably ought to have known forms part of the proceeds of your unlawful activity to wit: criminal breach of trust and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 18(b) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 as amended.”

While ex-Governor Yahaya Bello and Hudu are still at large, Ali Bello and Suleiman, first and second defendants respectively, who were present in court “pleaded not guilty” to all the charges when they were read to them.

In continuation of the trial, Oyedepo  invited fourth Prosecution Witness, PW4, Yakubu Gana, counsel to the property owner and seller of a property  located in Danube Street, Maitama, Abuja which Ali Bello and Suleiman allegedly bought at the cost of N950million on behalf of ex-governor Yahaya Bello through their lawyer, Ramalan Jibril Abdullahi.

Gana said that, “we negotiated and agreed on the sum of N950million. Their lawyer, Ramalan Abdullahi,  said his clients would prefer to pay in cash and in dollars. I had to call my client to inform him because he was not in the country at that time. My client cautioned me whether I knew the buyers, and I answered I knew their lawyer way back in secondary school.

“The lawyer and the clients invited me into their office, a bureau de change office at Zone 4, adjacent to Sheraton, now Abuja Continental Hotel. They then showed me dollars in ‘Ghana must go,’ but the dollars in ‘Ghana must go’ was not up to that N950million. They said they would make it up by bringing some dollars to make it to N950million. The transaction took us almost two weeks, and the lawyer invited me to the same BDC office for confirmation, then the money was completed in dollar equivalent,” he said.

In his testimony as fifth prosecution witness,  Abdullahi told the court that though he acted as a go-between in the purchase of the property, his major assignment was to carry out due diligence on the said property which paved the way for its purchase by Ali Bello and Suleiman, his clients.

Oyedepo requested for the property’s title documents to enable him to tender them in evidence.  However, Justice Omotosho ordered him to formally apply to the defendants and thereafter adjourned the matter to March 28, 2024 for continuation of trial. (Flowerbudnews)

NGO trains faith-based youths on triggers, prevention of GBV in homes, communities

    By Flowerbudnews

An NGO, Hayche Multi Service Solution, has trained male members of faith-based youths’ organisations on triggers and prevention of Gender Based Violence (GBV) in homes and communities.

The five-day training, which is a train-the-trainer workshop was organised by Hayche Multi Service Solution working with Christian Youths’ Organisations to put an end
to GBV in homes, groups, communities and Churches.

The workshop was themed: “Training of Programme Facilitators for the (+M) Positive Masculinity Programme to End GBV”.

The Christian youths, which are drawn from the South-East and North Central, are from Anambra and Enugu States (South-East) as well as Benue and Plateau States (North Central).

Speaking on Thursday, Mr Wilfred Okeke, the Programme Coordinator (+M) Positive Masculinity Programme, said the facilitators are being trained on effect attitudinal change on adolescent boys and young male adults to drive a gender-equitable masculine identity.

According to him, the programme is meant for adolescent boys and young males to reflect on issues, practices and teachings both on the
relgious side (bible qoutations), tradition, customs and stereotypes that triggers, encourages and justify violence againt women and girls.

He said: “The (+M) Positive Masculinity Programme is a programme meant to encourage and support individual behavioural change and socio-emotional change among adolescent boys and young male between ages of 15 and 35 on how to treat female with respect, fairness and love they deserve.

“It is also meant to change negative and stereotyped social norms and attitude of what it means to be a man; thus, males coming to treat female and women with equity and respect and not lording it over them that usually create fraction, disagreement and violence.

“The programme tries to shift this negative norms and stereotype that the man or male is dominant and must lord it over the female (woman) and see that she is suppressed and subjugated that leads to most violence scenes in homes, groups, communities and the Church.”

Okeke explained that the programme targeted training christain youths due to the discovery that there are some misquoted biblical quotations people do use to encourage or perpetrate GBV in homes and communities; while some Church leaders give support to these misquoted verses.

“They do this in error by not giving the biblical quotations contextual and historical background and meaning to actually create proper understand of what the Holy Bible is truly saying,” he said.

Okeke said that the programme would leverage on existing structures of Christian Youths’ Organisations in various Churches in South-East and North Central parts of the country to step down the training.

“We intend to approach GBV from a preventive stance where all Christian adolescence boys and youth males learn and re-learn how to treat our sisters, women and mothers better for a peaceful and more loving homes, communities, groups and Church, where everybody is respected and accommodated,” he said.

One of the participants (facilitator being trained), Mr Ifeanyi Ohaju, said
that he had learnt to treat female with respect, ensure they are not discriminate at in all decisions and shun all name-calling and gossip against them which usually irritates them and lead to disagreements and violence.

“I have learnt that GBV can be psychological, financial, sexual and physical; and as male we must ensure the home, group and community is conducive for the female to be happy, feel loved and respected to create needed harmony,” Ohaju said. (Flowerbudnews)

Confusion as EFCC names ex-Kogi governor in alleged corruption perpetrated before he assumed office

    Flowerbudnews

There was confusion on Thursday at a Federal High Court, Abuja, following amended charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Alli Bello and Daudu Suleiman, including the immediate-past Governor of Kogi.

In the amended charge filed before Justice James Omotosho, the EFCC alleged that the suspects diverted about N100 billion belonging to the state government in September 2015, months before ex-Governor Yahaya Bello assumed office.

Ex-Governor Bello was not a defendant in the original suit, and was not in court.

When the matter was called for the defendants to be re-arraigned, counsel for the former governor, A.M. Aliyu, SAN, objected to reading of the amended charges to his client.

His ground of objection was that the anti-graft agency had failed woefully to comply with Section 218 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015.

The senior lawyer submitted that a copy of the amended charges was not served on them as required by the provisions of ACJA.

But EFCC’s lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, asked the court to reject the arguments of the defendant, adding that the court had on its own endorsed the amendment.

Justice Omotoso, in a shirt ruling, recalled that he had granted accelerated hearing in the matter and had also ordered that all forms of objections must be kept in abeyance till address stage.

The judge then directed the court registrar to read the amended charges.

After the 17-count charge was read to the defendants, Ali Bello, who is the current Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, and his co-defendant, Dauda Suleman, denied the fraud allegations in the amended charges brought against them at the fresh arraignment.

They pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

In the first count, former Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, Alli Bello and Dauda Suleman were accused of conspiring with each other in September 2015 and converted N80, 246, 470, 089 to their personal use.

They were alleged to have run foul of Section 18 (a) of the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2011 because they ought to have reasonably known that the money was a product of fraud and criminal breach of public trust.

In other charges, Alli Bello and Dauda Suleman were alleged to have concealed several millions of naira with one Rabiu Musa Tafada, a Bureau De Change (BDC) operator trading under Global Venture in Abuja.

Aliyu, who appeared for Alli Bello, at this point, applied that one of the EFCC witnesses, Edward Fanada, be recalled for fresh cross-examination in view of the contents of the amended charges.

The request was granted by Justice Omotoso due to no opposition from the EFCC lawyer.

Meanwhile, the judge admitted Alli Bello and Dauda Suleman to a bail condition earlier granted in the previous charges.

He adjourned the .after until March 20 and March 21 for trial continuation.(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)

Bandits who kidnapped more than 280 students in Kaduna last Thursday have issued a 20-day ultimatum for the students’ release, demanding a ransom of one billion naira. According to a report by CNN Africa, the gunmen conveyed this message through a phone call to Aminu Jibril, a resident of Kuriga village where the school is located.

Aminu Jibril recounted that the bandits contacted him from a hidden number, threatening to harm the students if their demands were not met.

He shared, “They called me from a hidden number yesterday afternoon at around 12:16 PM and demanded 1 billion naira as ransom for the students.

They specified that the ultimatum would only last for three weeks or 20 days from the date they kidnapped the children. If there’s no action from the government, they will kill all of them.”

Jibril further revealed that the bandits cited retaliation against the government and security agencies for the killing of their gang members as their motive for the kidnapping.

Group urges political leaders to strive to alleviate hardships facing Nigerians

    Flowerbudnews

The Companion, an association of Muslim men in business and professions, has urged governments at all levels to strive to make contingency plans that would alleviate the excruciating hardship facing majority of the citizens.

The group made the call in a statement jointly signed by its National Amir, Mr Kamil Olalekan, and the Public Affairs Secretary, Alhaji Muideen Adeleke on Thursday.

The group also urged the citizens to give maximum support to the government, so that the country could regain its lost glory before long.

They congratulated the adherents of Islam worldwide on the occasion of the ongoing 1445 AH ( 2024) Ramadan season.

The group contended that the 2024 Ramadan fast could not have come at a better time, other than now that Nigeria is faced with enormous challenges in virtually all facets.

It stressed that the ongoing spiritual rebirth offered the followers of Prophet Muhammad, an ample opportunity to seek the face of Allah, so that the country could successfully navigate through the myriad of problems confronting her.

“No country has ever developed without passing through the turbulence.

“But patriotism on the part of the government and the governed, makes most of them to overcome their teething challenges,” it said.

The group equally enjoined the Nigerian youth not to lose hope in the nation but join the legion of forward looking individuals whose belief in the Nigerian project remains unshaken.

It advised the citizenry to refrain from sabotaging government programmes while the country’s leaders should strive to make contingency plans that would alleviate the excruciating hardship facing majority of Nigerian citizens.

The organisation maintained that rather than curse the leaders in frustration, the ongoing Ramadan season provides a veritable window for the righteous to explore, in the overall interest of the nation.

“It is imperative that adherents of Islam take maximum advantage of the ongoing Ramadan fast to seek restitution through various meritorious deeds, instead of venting their anger on the leaders,” it said.

The Companion reminded the adherents of Islam of the need to prioritise giving out charity to assist many less privileged Muslims to partake in the all-important annual spiritual rebirth..(NAN)(www.nannews.ng)
