The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Banku Obi has charged graduands of the Department of History and International Studies to remain committed to Upholding the legacy of personal growth and societal development.
The Vice Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Eno Grace Nta, stated this while declaring opened the 3rd Induction Ceremony of graduands into the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN) at an event held in the auditorium of the University’s Senate Chambers.
Emphasizing their role as custodians of history, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the graduands, noting that historians shape the future by exploring human experiences, cultural dynamics, and societal evolution.
The University Administrator encouraged the inductees to apply their knowledge and skills towards making meaningful contributions to their communities and the world.
Head of Department, History and International Studies, Prof. Dave Imbua, commended the graduands for their dedication and perseverance.
He described the induction as the beginning of a new chapter, stating that, as professional Historians, they have been trained to gather evidence and produce the authentic history Nigeria needs.
He said further:;
“As professional historians, we trust that you are equipped to present the true history of Nigeria. The world is waiting for you.”
The National Acting President of the Historical Society of Nigeria (HSN), Zara Kwaghe represented by Prof. Grace Brown, congratulated the inductees while emphasizing the importance of history, even as she notes that, History provides a foundation for other disciplines.
In the induction lecture titled, “The Secret of Hidden Curriculum”, Prof. Winifred Akoda highlighted the value of studying History in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
She encouraged the inductees to cultivate the culture of self-development and adapt to the digital world.
The event which featured presentation of certificates of membership of the HSN to the Inductees and Awards to deserving students and other stakeholders was well attended by members of the HSN from across the country.
