Sowore, Past Winners to Headline 12th Splash FM Ibadan City Marathon.

The 12th Splash FM Ibadan City Marathon is set to take place on August 17, 2025, with popular pro-democracy campaigner and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress , Omoyele Sowore, and several past winners among the nearly 700 registered athletes.

‎Confirming the pedigree of the event and what it represents, many stakeholders have expressed readiness to work with Splash 105.5 FM, the organisers to ensure a successful event.

The Oyo State Government has described the marathon as a worthy project, with a proven track record of putting Ibadan and Oyo state on the map of excellence in the area of Sport and Tourism.

‎Speaking at a media parley organised on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Honourable Wasilat Adegoke said the government under, Engineer Seyi Makinde was proud to have supported and identified with the race more than any other in the history of the state.

‎The National Sports Commission through its South West Zonal Coordinator, Mrs Evelyn Fabunmi, said all hands are on deck as the technical lead in this marathon to ensure that it turns out a sporting success.

With a chain of other stakeholders such as Athletics Federation of Nigeria AFN, National Association of Technical Officers NATO and others fully on board.

‎The event has garnered support from various stakeholders, including the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, National Association of Technical Officers, NATO  and others.

Seventy medical personnel, including doctors, nurses,  physiotherapists, Sport scientists, Red Cross members and other volunteers have been enlisted to ensure medical coverage.

‎All the registered athletes have also been fully insured against any eventuality.

‎The Police, FRSC, and Oyo State Road Traffic Maintenance Authority will provide security and traffic management.

Organisers have now pleaded with members of the Public for tolerance and understanding as the marathoners will run through areas, such as; Liberty, Mobil Ring Road, Aleshinloye-Eleyele, Sango-UI-Ojo, Iwo Road, Gate-Beere-Molete and Challenge.

The 42km marathon will start at 7am at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, former Liberty Stadium.

Of Nearly a thousand runners are gearing up to participate in the fast approaching Ibadan City Marathon Race, scheduled to hold this Sunday, 17th August 2025 at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Ibadan.

‎The first 42 kilometre full marathon race in Sub Saharan Africa is an initiative of Splash 105.5 FM, Ibadan with its first edition in 2008. Over the years, it has continued to put Ibadan on the global map of Sporting activities.

After a break in 2020, occasioned by the Covid Pandemic, it makes a long awaited return in 2025.

With the registration now over, organisers are putting finishing touches on every element to ensure a smooth event.

While total prize money of 4 million naira is on offer, medals have been put in place for the top 20 athletes while everyone who completes the marathon would be presented with a certificate of participation.

‎This year’s Ibadan City Marathon Race is powered by Oyo State government with the National  Sports Commission as Technical Partners.

Motorists and commuters are implored to show tolerance and understanding by avoiding the marathon routes as would be announced leading to the event.

With a total prize money of N4 million and medals for the top 20 athletes. Every participant who completes the marathon will receive a certificate of participation.
