The Founder of the Ikenga Abiama Dynasty Foundation, Dr Uba Iwunwa (Queen Ugobeze), has expressed support for the restoration of the functions of traditional rulers in the Nigerian Constitution.

Iwunwa made the call on Sunday in Enugu in a statement issued to newsmen.

She commended the traditional ruler of Obosi Ukwalla Kingdom, Igwe Chidubem Iweka III, for raising this important issue on national platforms.

Iwunwa, who is the Sovereign Grand Matriarch of the 21st Century Pan-African Commonwealth Royalties from the Throne of HIRM King Aba Obazi IV Enebiene Royal Dynasty in Ghana and Nigeria, emphasised that the call was timely response to the structural challenges facing Nigeria.

“This request reflects a broader need within our society to enhance governance by integrating traditional authority into contemporary political structures,” she said.

Iwunwa, who is also an International best seller author and multiple award-winning artist, noted that “restoring the roles of traditional rulers is vital for reinforcing traditional institutions, which are key to maintaining cultural heritage and fostering community identity.

“Their knowledge of local issues positions them as essential allies in resolving conflicts and promoting peace more effectively than existing bureaucratic systems,” she added.

She further argued that formally incorporating traditional rulers into governance would enhance local governance and create a more inclusive political environment.

“Their inclusion ensures that grassroots voices are heard, reflecting the diverse needs of all Nigerians,” she noted.

Iwunwa pointed out the historical role of traditional rulers in mediating disputes and fostering unity, adding that by empowering them within the constitutional framework, they can further contribute to national stability.

She appealed to members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders to consider the restoration of traditional rulers’ functions as a crucial step towards improving governance in Nigeria,

“By embracing our traditional institutions, we honor our heritage while paving the way for a unified future for all Nigerians,” she added.
